Original iPhone plus 2.0 better deal than 3G?

After upgrading my software to 2.0 on my original iPhone, my delight with Apple is even greater than before - excellent App Store, great little tweaks to the previous user interface, plus push (well Ok, only half a push now) etc etc. Altogether I now have a great smartphone.
So why do I need 3g? Naturally it will be faster than Edge, but not enough to make a difference to my life - I do most of my web surfing and email on wifi and, if I have to use Edge it works fine overall (I can wait a few more seconds per page - no big deal). And do I really need GPS? I have car navigation software on a Tomtom already and the existing map and location service seems to meet most of my non-driving requirements.
I am sure the 3g is great and would recommend iPhone to all - but I have saved some cash and hassle by not upgrading from original to 3g - thanks to the excellent 2.0. Hopefully there will be further software upgrades later which will also apply to the original iPhone.
Better to wait till next year's model before upgrading the hardware, perhaps? Am I missing something?

I take that as a compliment. Set 'em up, Joe - mine's a whisky mac...

Also very strange is that I don't have the folder "MobileSync" in /Library/Application Support/MobileSync on my computer. I can't find that folder anywhere.
Correct.
You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/.
The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).

• A MacBook Pro is a Better Deal Than A Windows XP Notebook!!!

Well I would just like to share the good news with all of you...
After going onto www.hpshopping.com , I have noticed that a similiar in power Windows XP Professional laptop with the same speciifications costs more than the all new MacBook Pro when the educational discount is used.
A WIndows XP Pro laptop costs about $1999 when powered up to the same specs as the MacBook Pro which costs only $1799, has a better scree, bigger resolution, bigger screen, better camera, better wirelss internet, bluetooth.
SO BUY A MACBOOK PRO TODAY IS YOU ARE A STUDENT! ITS THE BEST DEAL AROUND!
(I cant belive it but finally apple is cheaper than Microsoft!)

What is that old saying "there goes a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing"
Not at aimed at you RobG1, but many others who are obsessed with this price comparison, including a heated debate going on at the MacWorld site.
Apples may or may not be more expensive than a Dell (why is it always Dell? Surely as better brand comparison would be with Sony or Toshiba).
I switched and use a Mac for a variety of reasons, none of which was price. Going into a business meeting and knowing it will work. Never having that embarrasing moment went the machine won't boot up, or won't work with the projector, or the application fails etc etc. Using Keynote or even Powerpoint for mac always looks better on screen than using Powerpoint on a PC. It very often prompts favourable comment.
My powerbook always seems to promote a discussion beyond work leading to a connection with a client that would normally take dinner.
Finally there is something about OSX that makes using a computer easier and more pleasurable. I can't explain it but is there.
Put a "price" on the above then a comparision can be made.
RobG1 I notice from your sig you use XP. If you needed equitable pricing, for whatever reason, to make your switch it is great you now have the ammunition. You should make the switch you will not regret it.
I do not hate Dells, they have done a great job in bringing cheap computers to market. I don't particularly hate Microsoft (I don't like their business practices, nor do I think they make "great" software). But to compare the two systems on the basis of price entirely misses the point.

• Original Iphone Running Slow with 2.0 Upgrade?

After upgrading to the new software update 2.0, my original Iphone seems to be running slower than previously. This includes switching from applications, moving screens and even typing a simple note or text. Anyone else having this issue? If so, anyone have a quick fix on this? And yes, I have restarted the Iphone with no luck as well.

I think Apple is having massive issues with this whole "upgrade". In my opinion it has to do with the fact that applications can't run in the background (like most other real smartphones on the planet). I took my first generation iPhone into the store for this issue; the slowness progressed to the point that the entire phone crashed routinely requiring a full restore at least once every 3 days and several restarts a day. I had to restore my phone about 6 or 7 times a week.
I went into the store and they had a pile of 1st generation iPhones sitting there. Rather than go through the standard checklist of things that might be wrong, the Apple rep just handed me a new one and said that the new one should solve the issue. Three other customers were in there for the exact same reason; i overheard the rep tell one upset customer that it has to do with memory overload and that the memory module will eventually crash; hence the need for a new phone.
Going through this whole experience made me realize what an idiot i was to ditch my Curve for this garbage. I am waiting for the Blackberry Bold to be released and then i am ditching this paper-weight. Oh, and the new iPhone is even worse and is currently in restore mode as i write this.
Note to Apple; please continue to deny that you made a crappy product and continue to blame your issues on developers and the consumer. I am sure that business users like myself will be going back to RIM as soon as they can.

• Original iPhone as iPod Touch?

Hello - I have an original iPhone that I want to use as an iPod Touch. I have a newer iPhone 4. The SIM card for the original iPhone is still in the old phone. I have restored the original iPhone, but cannot get any further than the activiation screen. How do I just turn this in to an iPod Touch?
Thanks,
-David

It should activate with that SIM. What happens when you try? Any error message?
FWIW, I'm using my old 3G as a Touch and activated it with my old AT&T SIM card from my old 3G.

• Original iPhone Better than iPhone 4?

I have been using the very original iPhone for years, and upgraded to the iPhone 4 as soon as I could. The day I switched phones I lost all coverage inside my office. I now have the new bumper from Apple, but it's still not even close to the awesome coverage of the original. Any ideas on better bumpers to get or a way to solve this?

Try switching 3G off and using Edge connection. Since you were using the original iPhone, you were on Edge only and saw that better coverage.
The minute you switch to iPhone 4, you started using 3G. Your office may not have good 3G coverage there and better coverage on Edge.

• IPhoto 09 Gives Better Results than Aperture 2.0 on RAW

I wanted to compare the results of Aperture 2.0 to iPhoto '09 on a RAW photo. To my chagrin, iPhoto had done a better job on the photo just by using the instant fix wizard and then one click on the color saturation effect.
With Aperture, I imported the iPhoto library and made sure I was working on the "Original" RAW photo from that library. My workflow started with autoexposure, then the two auto levels (Luminance & RGB) by the histogram. I maxed the Sharpening in the RAW fine tuning.
I tried tweaking the contrast, saturation, exposure and recovery. Nothing I can seem to do in Aperture can get the photo to look have the details as sharp and the colors as vibrant. iPhoto's automatic algorithms appear to be far superior to Aperture's auto exposure and auto levels of Luminance and RGB. Plus, it appears to do a better job than all the other controls will allow me to do manually.
Has anyone else compared the two products side by side on the same photo and experienced the same?
Thanks,
Don

Hmmmm,
This is a meaningless comparison - If you cannot get the results you want in Ap then just use iPhoto and it's auto everything button and be happy. There is nothing magic going on in iPhoto, it uses the same CoreImage subroutines as Aperture for RAW interpretation prior to applying any of it's adjustments. One thing that the iPhoto auto functions will do is it will sacrifice more highlights and shadows detail than the Aperture auto levels will, you can set that in prefs if you like more contrast.
RB
Ps. the raw fine tuning sharpen slider will make virtually no visual difference, it is NOT for final output sharpening.

• Applecare Original iPhone Battery Replacement

My battery life has decreased significantly, so I called support and learned that under Applecare, they will cross-ship you a like-new replacement phone for no charge if your battery life is under 50%- but they put a hold on your credit card for the full amount of the replacement until the problem is tested.
My question is this: how stringent are they with the less than 50% battery condition? And what is normal standby time and usage for a 2 year old original iphone running the latest software?
The battery life is certainly not meeting my needs, but will I be charged for the replacement phone if they deem the old battery fit? Will I have the option to get the old phone (and battery) back instead of paying $499 if that is the case?
Any experiences or insight is helpful- thanks!

Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange at a discounted price. The cost is $199 plus tax.
Did AppleCare inform you the replacement cost for an original iPhone is $499 in this situation - for an iPhone that remains under warranty?
I had an iPhone exchanged under warranty once via AppleCare. They required a credit card in case I didn't return the iPhone being exchanged within the required time frame - within 10 business days I believe.
If they determine that your iPhone's battery does not meet this requirement, I would think you have the option to have the iPhone returned to you. You should be able to confirm this with AppleCare.

• Anyone jump from the Original iPhone to an iPhone 4?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I upgraded from original iPhone on July 3rd. I loved the phone, but was worried over all the "antenna" issues so returned it within 30 days. I wanted to wait until end of September to be sure they did not come out with any minor change to the antenna which could affect future resale. I have been an Apple user since the original Mac back in the 1980's. First time I had to return a product -- but it is only temporary.
It was painful moving back to the original iPhone -- here are the main things I liked about the iPhone4 vs original:
3G speed: I ran Speedtest on my original before upgrading and then with the new iPhone 4 from the exact same spot in my house. Original averaged 50 - 100kbs download. iPhone 4 averaged 1200-1500kbs. Web pages loaded much faster.
Maps/Compass: The true GPS is great to know exactly where you are. The original iPhone "fake GPS" maps was not very accurate. There are many free apps that use the GPS. There was a Geo-caching app to track down things people had placed -- fun to do. There are apps you can use to track your route and how far you have gone (great for hiking, bike riding).
Rear Camera: Rear camera is a huge improvement over original. Having a flash really helps. With the new HDR feature in iOS 4.1 coming out, the photos will look even better.
Video -- the video from the rear camera was also good. Not going to replace my dedicated video camera, but produces good quality video when I need it.
Front Camera: didn't get a chance to use FaceTime. This will be better once there are more users. Hopefully Apple will integrate it with all the MacBooks so I can FaceTime to home / family computers.
Retina Display: was clearer, but there seemed to be more hype on this than the actual difference (at least for my eyes).
Multi-Tasking: I definitely miss this already. Very easy to move between apps. Much quicker to navigate.
Folders: I also miss this. Again, much easier to organize apps and get to them quicker.
Tethering: I was lucky enough to get the HandyLight app for the few hours it was up on iTunes. It worked well for tethering my MacBook Pro to the iPhone. I will stay with the unlimited data plan and use this app for the infrequent tethering I may need to do.
Overall speed of launching apps, moving between screens was faster, and typing was faster on iPhone 4. I never noticed the delay on my original iPhone as much until I switched back to it. Especially the lag when typing -- I sometimes type 2-3 letters and then have to wait a second or 2 for it to show up.
iPhone 4 Cons:
I did find a few times where data would stop working on the 3G network -- never had that problem when on Edge network in same location. Was most likely an issue with AT&T network being overwhelmed vs a phone issue.
Antenna: I always use a case -- afraid to drop it and crack the screen. If I took off the case and held my finger/hand over the antenna gap then I would get a significant drop in signal. At my home, I ran the speedtest covering the antenna -- the download speeds would drop to almost 0kbs. Put the case back on and my data downloads were fine. I also tried leaving the case off and covering the gap with carefully cut Scotch tape -- this also worked fine in solving the problem.
I decided to try this with my original iPhone -- took off the case and covered the lower plastic section. Results were similar -- data dropped to almost nothing.
Final note - Data usage. I was averaging 200 - 250mb per month on my original iPhone. In the first week I had used about 1GB on the iPhone 4. I was using it a lot more, using GPS/Maps more, running Speedtest frequently, etc. Since webpages load faster, I was doing more internet browsing. I would recommend staying with the unlimited data plan when you upgrade.
Hope this helps. iPhone 4 is great and I can't wait to re-purchase it in a month. Either they will have made a minor adjustment (insulated antenna, clear coat finish over antenna) or I will re-purchase it as is. I felt it was worth a couple month wait to protect my phone investment.

• What's the better deal? - same price, different specs

I've got a tough choice between two good Macbook pros at the same price. Which do you think will perform better? Which is the best overall deal? Why?
The most computer intensive things I do will be basic movie editing, 3d modeling with CAD, maybe gaming. So I guess graphics are pretty important.

the 2.3GHz Quad Core will be faster than the 2.4GHz Quad Core because of the system bus of 1600MHz....
with the 1600MHz system bus and faster 1600MHz RAM, this will be a better deal for you.
in any event, either macbook pro will be fine with what you'll be using it for....
although the 2.4GHz might seem faster because of the speed of the processor, do keep in mind that the 2.3GHz is running on the new ivy bridge processor/chipset..
you will be however, happy with either one....
or you can buy one and if you're not happy with it, you have a 14 day return/exchange policy and replace with the other one...
good luck in deciding...

• Video app for original iPhone?

Is there any chance of a legit video camera app for the original iPhone? We know the hardware can handle it, because of the multiple jailbreak apps. How about it? PLease?

http://cache.saurik.com/cycorder.mov
The video on my original iPhone is perfectly acceptable (see above), certainly better than any other phone i've had. it is a shame that Cycorder is not available through the App store so that more people can easily install it.

• How do i go back to my original iphone if i restored it from a backup?i

I just downloaded the new itunes 10. I plugged in my iphone and began to set it up. When i got the the page set up your iphone i clicked on restore from the backup "My Iphone" last updated 1.26.11. SO LONG AGO. What I want here is to set it up as a new iphone but now I have my old one back with stuff on there from last year and its annoying me hardcore. Is there anyway I can go back to my original Iphone or is that lost?

HOW DO I GO BACK IF I RESTORE FROM OLD IPHONE?

Can you attach a screenshot and maybe post a link?
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
*View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)
If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" as a (too) high value can cause issues.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
Make sure that you allow websites to choose their fonts.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with overlapping text.

• Mail app crashes when opening on original iPhone

My teenage son's mail app keeps crashing when he tries to open it on his original iPhone. It has been happening since 2.0, with neither of the latest updates fixing the problem. He has been a jailbreaker with his phone in the past.
I have never jailbroken my iPhone and I have no application problems, other than some buggy apps from the app store that I had to delete because they would brick my phone. I've always been able to get my phone back to normal after a clean restore (not from back-up), and am very careful now. I have had no problems with the new 2.0.2 update and I have five pages full of apps from the app store.
Is a clean restore his only option? He seems reluctant to do this but I told him he may have some lingering problems due to a corrupt file from when he was jailbroken.
Are there easier, simpler solutions to fix a crashing Mail App before resorting to a clean restore?
Thanks in advance, Deb

Just a note, I've never jailbroken my phone.
I have five different mail accounts on my phone, could that be the problem? I click on the mail app button, it sits at the mail screen (no accounts visible) for a few seconds then dumps back to the home screen. I check options and my mail accounts are there, the app just won't finish booting up. This problem is madning and I really wish there was a solution beyond wiping my phone.
