Original iphone to use as ipod

Hi I have an original iphone that was given to me. It does not have a sim card and was reset. It is in great condition and what I am trying to do is use it as a ipod. The phone will not get out of the emergency call screen. I have tryed to hook up to itunes and they just prompt me to re-sign up with att for the phone. Anyway around this? Thanks.

+To continue using your original iPhone without active cellular service, leave the inactive SIM card in place. You will be able to use the iPhone as you would an iPod touch (Wi-Fi only, no cellular service) as long as you keep the SIM with which it was last used, even if you update or restore the operating system of the original iPhone.+
+Activation for an original iPhone requires that its SIM card stays with that iPhone. If the original iPhone displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen, you can use that SIM card to re-activate the iPhone, regardless of whether that SIM has a wireless service account/tariff still associated with it.+
+To re-activate an original iPhone that displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen:+
+Reinsert the SIM card used when the original iPhone was activated and had a valid wireless service account/tariff.+
+Connect the original iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.+
+If that SIM was previously valid and used with that original iPhone, iTunes will re-activate the iPhone, but without any cellular service.+

  • Iphone 4 Used as iPod.

I am currently using my old iphone 4 as an ipod - how do I keep the phone lit when it is playing? My Nano ipod used to always stay lit throught the duration of play and I used to like seeing the artwork.

Okay thanks, best not to do that then - will just have to put with a blank screen.

  • Can I use my iPhone like using an iPod + Smart Phone

    Hi,
I need an iPhone and iPod. Do I need to buy them separately? Or I can just get an iPhone and use it like an iPod + Phone(Will the iPhone work with an ear plug)?
    Thanks.

  • IOS 7, Handing Down iPhone to Use as iPod, Can't Activate

I have a iPhone 4S with iOS 7 on it. I have upgraded myself and my phone number to an iPhone 5S.
I want to give this iPhone 4S to my kid so he can use it as a regular iPod Touch. I don't have or want cellular access on the device.
I've been unable to make this happen. I plugged the phone into iTunes, did a Factory Restore. Phone rebooted and I got the point where I had to log in as my Apple ID. I did that but didn't see any option to "remove the phone from my Apple ID".
I went into General and did a full Erase from my freshly factory restored phone.
Now, when starting the phone and going through the setup process, it asks me to pick a wireless network, and then gets hung on trying to Activate the Phone. It will sit there trying to activate for a long time before failing. I'm not sure what it's trying to Activate.
If I plug it into iTunes, it'll spin for a long time and then bring up a screen that says:
We're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time
I don't know what else to do. I want to get this phone off my account and give it to my son but I can't figure out the process for doing so. I want to reset it like it's a brand new out of the box iPhone, and I can't seem to do it. It's just hung up on the Activation process.

If the transfer was successful, then the phone has now been removed from your cell service.
After that for activation of the phone you need a valid sim card in the phone to activate it. It does not need to have service attached though.
In can be your old deactivated sim card if its still in the phone.
Once that is done and your Apple Id has been successfully cleared from the phone, the phone should be ready to be used.
When it fails does it give you a reason for failure? Or just simply not activate?

  • Locked iphone 4S use as ipod touch?

My friend gave me a locked iphone 4S as a gift, but I am T-mobile user. Can I use it as ipod touch? Thanks

I think with iOS5 you don't need a sim card for activation, I could be wrong though.
On the other hand, I think most carriers have an early unlock option where you can pay a bit of money (T-Mobile Germany charges 130 €, I think) to unlock the phone immediately.

  • Original iPhone used as an iPod

I purchased an iPhone 4. Now can my original iPhone be used as an iPod? If so, how do I do that I have erased all the data and apps off, can they be replaced? Thanks.

Sure. Just hook up your old phone to iTunes and load the music you want on it. I will recognize your old phone. I am doing this with my 4 gig iPhone I purchase when they came out. WiFi works but you can't make phone calls.
My 3G will be my new iPod Touch when I get my iPhone4 soon.

  • Use for Original iPhone

I bought an iPhone 4 and now have an original iPhone gathering dust.
A friend is thinking of getting an iPod Touch and using Skype or some other VOIP system and giving up her cell phone. She has a fear of cellular radiation and she's looking to cut her phone bill.
I offered her my original iPhone to give it a try. Personally I don't think skype alone on an iPod Touch will satisfy her phone needs, and trying it out on my old iPhone would prove/disprove my theory.
What if anything do I need to do to make the old iPhone useable for her? Do I pull the chip out or leave it in?
What's the latest iOS the original iPhone can use?

Group 2B, in which the WHO categorizes EMF as "possibly carcinogenic", also includes things such as orange oil, pickled vegetables, talc-based body powder, titanium dioxide (recommended by many medical organiations as a safer sun block), nickel (the metal), and coffee. Rather a "catch-all" of possibilities, and while not to be dismissed, not exactly a damming statement. If you read the full monograph, it says:
"The evidence was reviewed critically, and overall evaluated as being limited among users of wireless telephones for glioma and acoustic neuroma, and inadequate to draw conclusions for other types of cancers. "
The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk."
This WHO statement is therefore only a statement of concern and a call for additional study, not a definite statement that cellphone use causes cancer.
It's certainly her choice what risks she wishes to avoid. We all make such choices regularly, about all sorts of risks. But an iPod touch is not likely to be much less of a risk, if any, that a cellphone,

  • Can the ipod on the iPhone be used w/o having a service plan?

I want get an iPhone but i don't need to use it as a phone right now because I still have a few months left on the contract wit t-mobile. I just want to get the iPhone and use the ipod and safari feature on it. Does anyone know if that is possible or do I need a AT&T to get it activated?

You are completely unable to use any of the iPhone features (including WiFi, Edge, Safari, iPod, etc) until you've activated the phone with AT&T

  • Does the SSL cert vulnerability affect the original iphone? CVE-2011-0228

The software update for iOS 4.3.5 claims that a patched vulnerability doesn't affect the original iPhone
Products Affected: iPad, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation), iPhone 3GS, Product Security
Available for: iOS 3.0 through 4.3.4 for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 (GSM), iOS 3.1 through 4.3.4 for iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, iOS 3.2 through 4.3.4 for iPad
However, the original security advisory which prompted this security update implies that it is affected:
Version affected:  Versions Prior to 5.0b4, 4.3.5, and 4.2.10
Can anyone clarify if the original iPhone is affected?

    Hi Ramkumar,
The report is complaining that the Certificate Authority who signed the ID certificate presented by the ASA used a weak hashing algorithm. First, you need to determine who signed the certificate.
If the certificate is self-signed by the ASA, you can generate a new certificate and use SHA1 as the hashing algorithm. To do this, the ASA needs to be running a software version that is at least 8.2(4) (8.3 and 8.4 software also support SHA1).
If the certificate is signed by an external CA, you need to contact them and ask them to sign a new certificate for you using SHA instead of MD5.
The links you posted have more information on this as well. Hope that helps.

  • Where can I find apps which are compatible with original iphone?

All the apps even twitter and facebook apps on app store say it requires a ios4. Could someone tell me where I can find apps for original iphone

See the response by PC1234 at https://discussions.apple.com/message/19298842#19298842 to see some techniques for doing this with a Google search.  You would need to replace the 3.1 with the version of iOs that your original iPhone is using.  Your version number can be found under Settings:General:About:Version on your iPhone.

    Yes.
You can authorize up to 5 computers to play itunes music ( pre-itunes plus).  There is no limit on itunes plus ( all itunes music for the past several years) and imported music.
You can sync as many ipods/ipads/iphones as you like to each of your computers.

  • How do I get my all my music from my original computer to my current computer? Music is on my original IPhone that I use as an IPod. Most of my music is selected from an external hard drive.

The bulk of my music is held on an external hard drive. The balance is music I have purchased off ITunes. About 8years ago I selected songs from all this music on the hard drive and the playlists are held in ITunes on this computer that I used 8 years ago. The music was copied to my original IPhone which I now use as an IPod. How can I transfer this ITunes list to my current computer?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Use the original iPhone as a iPod Touch

I would like tlo use my original iPhone as a iPod Touch but I am unable to activate or unblock the SIM card. I cannot use my iPhone 4 SIM car on the original as it is a different size.
    What now?

I did borrow the SIM card from a friends old 3G he is using an an iPod Touch. It worked.
Even more interesting is that when I placed the "problem" SIM card in the 3G it merely indicated the SIM was locked but otherwise works as intended -  an iPhone without cellular service - an iPod Touch.
No idea why the 1st gen iPhone will not work with its own SIM but its SIM works in a 3G.
