Original iPhone Upgrade to 2.0 - Significantly Reduced Signal Quality

I upgraded my 1st gen iPhone with the official 2.0 update through iTunes on Friday night. Since then, I've noticed that my phone refuses to keep a steady signal. It happens especially when I'm actually trying to use it, such as when surfing the web or talking on the phone. Even at idle, though, I can unlock the phone and watch myself drop from 4 or 5 bars down to 1 or none. The top half of the phone (where I assume the processor is at) also gets ridiculously hot after only a few minutes use. As a result of this, my battery drain has increased significantly.
I took one poster's suggestion and turned off Push data retrieval, but that didn't see to fix anything yet.
Has anyone else experienced this? This phone used to be very reliable in terms of signal quality, as I'm in the NY/NJ area, so coverage isn't a problem.

  • Success on both my original iPhones upgrading to 2.0

I just updated both my original iPhone and my wife's and they work great, aren't sluggish and I like the new features.
Both took a long time to download the update, so long I was concerned that nothing was happening, but I clicked on the downloads tab/menu instead of the iPhone's tab/menu and saw that it was in fact downloading the program. Then I just let it do it's thing. It takes a long time, considerably longer than past updates but I had absolutely no problems on mine and everything works great.
I then did my wife's. Everything went great until the very end and I got an error message and all I could do from the phone was use the phone for an emergency call. The phone wasn't listed in the menu so I unplugged the phone, quit iTunes, rebooted iTunes and plugged the phone back in. iTunes then recognized the iPhone and synced it with the backup and everything works great now. I have no idea why this happened with her phone and not mine.
Both phones work great, all features work. Make sure you have 7.7. Good Luck!

Synced again and they came back. All seems okay.

I upgraded to iphone 4s and installed iOS 6 but now my battery life is significantly reduced. What can I do to fix this problem?
I restored my settings my I got the new phone but I think I heard that with the iOS 6 updated that can be an issue and it is better to start from scratch rather than restore your settings.

    reset all settings
settings- general- reset - reset all settings
    now reconnect to wifi
settings - wifi- click network name - enter password - join
if issue persists backup info and restore via itunes

  • After upgrading to a new 3GS, my original iPhone won't activate...

After I upgraded to an iPhone 3GS, I restored the original iPhone with iTunes. Now, the iPhone says it's got an invalid SIM in it, and when I plug it into iTunes, it won't activate it. It's basically a brick now.
Was I wrong in thinking I could now use the old iPhone basically like an iPod touch?

I haven't seen any press release that supercedes that, but the one you reference refers to the ORIGINAL iPhone, not a 3G. There have been posts here and elsewhere indicating that the restore/upgrade function no longer works on the 3G once you update to 3GS.
I suppose the original poster can put a phone call in to AppleCare to see if they might be able to get some help from them. I didn't make this rule, I am just reporting what everyone else is seeing, with or without the SIM card in the 3G.

  • Need to sync/backup original iPhone, so I can upgrade to a 3GS...

Please help. I need to sync/backup an original iPhone, so I can switch to a 3GS. My question has a few parts.
    1. Should I get the latest iTunes version? Does it even support the original iPhone? Or should I try to sync with my current version?
    2. I realize the original is being phased out, but I just need to back it up, without losing everything, so I can upgrade. What is the simplest way to do this?
    3. Is my situation even do-able? (I live nowhere near an Apple Store for help)
    Thanks so much!!

  • After 2.0 Upgrade original iPhone WiFi unstable and not connecting

I upgraded my original iPhone (8GB) to OS 2.0. I had some issues getting it upgraded with "problems accessing the iTunes Store" but once thoese resolved seemed ok. Even bought and synced Super Monkeyball.
I now notice that in my home where I have two airports (old G Extreme and a G Express) neither will connect to the iPhone for more than a few seconds and for the most part the phone doesn't see them.
Anyone have this issue and any suggestions for resolving?

Hi Menk - do me a favor will you? Go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > and then scroll down to "Calendars". Question: How many sub-functions do you see?
After I did the upgrade, I have two sub-functions. I look at the same path on a 3G iPhone, and see they have three. The 3rd sub-function is "Calendar Type". Do you have that on your upgraded iPhone?
Also, when you are in the Calendar apps, on the top left hand corner. do you have a "Calendar" button? I don't have one after my upgrade but I see that 3G does.
Look forward to hear from you ...

  • Keeping original iPhone data, songs, etc. when upgrading to 4g?

I have a first generation iPhone, and I really want to upgrade to 4G. Is it possible to recover the things from your original iPhone when activating and switching to the iPhone4? If so, how is that accomplished?

  • Best way to upgrade from original iPhone to 3Gs?

I've got an original iPhone that's having some problems which may make me get a 3Gs.
I'm looking for suggestions, tips, advice on things to consider when making the switch. Will the iTunes backup be sufficient to keep all my data, apps, contacts, calendars and everything else?
    Any input is appreciated.

Couple things I'd add to what's already posted...
    1) Over the several upgrades I've done from 2G to 3G to 3GS for some reason I've found that not upgrading from a back up seems to give me a better end result...obviously the choice is yours...but if you have synced all data like calendars contacts email etc with a MAC or PC that will just be transferred back during your first sync then no harm in starting fresh with a clean copy of the 3.1.2 OS and then adding all data on...
    2) When you upgrade, make sure you're using the very latest versions of iTunes...then make sure that ALL apps are up to date on BOTH iTunes AND iPhone BEFORE you sync for first time...for some reason I've found folks, myself included having issues with authorization and apps not transferring and most times it was due to the entire app library not being up to date on both sides before the upgrade...

  • Upgrading from Origina iPhone to iPhone 3G

So as my title states I'm thinking of upgrading, I've had my OG iPhone for quite a while and after playing with a buddy's 3G phone I think I'm hooked. I'm just wondering if it is as simple as buying the phone and plugging into iTunes or what. Also I'm wondering if theres a required change in phone plans. Any help is appreciated, maybe this is easier than I am making it out to be.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anthony

the best thing about upgrading is if you ever crack your screen it's ALOT cheaper to fix! my husband cracked the screen on the original iPhone. the only problem was that the LCD and the Lens are connected so you have to replace both. However, on the 3G iPhone, the Lens and LCD are separate. So if you crack your screen, all you have to do is replace the Lens instead of both parts (LCD's are alot more expensive!). When I cracked my screen on the 3G iPhone, i mailed it in to a repair center called Dr. Cell Phone. they fixed it for $99 and sent it back to me on the same day. good service. here's their website just in case any of you already have that problem (hopefully not!): www.drcellphone.com

  • Original Iphone Running Slow with 2.0 Upgrade?

After upgrading to the new software update 2.0, my original Iphone seems to be running slower than previously. This includes switching from applications, moving screens and even typing a simple note or text. Anyone else having this issue? If so, anyone have a quick fix on this? And yes, I have restarted the Iphone with no luck as well.

I think Apple is having massive issues with this whole "upgrade". In my opinion it has to do with the fact that applications can't run in the background (like most other real smartphones on the planet). I took my first generation iPhone into the store for this issue; the slowness progressed to the point that the entire phone crashed routinely requiring a full restore at least once every 3 days and several restarts a day. I had to restore my phone about 6 or 7 times a week.
I went into the store and they had a pile of 1st generation iPhones sitting there. Rather than go through the standard checklist of things that might be wrong, the Apple rep just handed me a new one and said that the new one should solve the issue. Three other customers were in there for the exact same reason; i overheard the rep tell one upset customer that it has to do with memory overload and that the memory module will eventually crash; hence the need for a new phone.
Going through this whole experience made me realize what an idiot i was to ditch my Curve for this garbage. I am waiting for the Blackberry Bold to be released and then i am ditching this paper-weight. Oh, and the new iPhone is even worse and is currently in restore mode as i write this.
Note to Apple; please continue to deny that you made a crappy product and continue to blame your issues on developers and the consumer. I am sure that business users like myself will be going back to RIM as soon as they can.
Advice to Business Apple iPhone Users; Sell your iPhone on ebay to some moron who is interested in playing Monkeyball and get a real business device that actually pushes email and doesn't crash three times a day.

  • Upgrade from Original iPhone

I have an original iPhone and it says on AT&T that I can get a discounted upgrade. Does anyone know how much this would be?
Also do you know if any AT&T dealers still have an 8G White iPhone for Sale?

"Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. Existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G should check with AT&T or use www.apple.com/iphone/buy to find out if they are eligible for early upgrade pricing: $299 (8GB), $399 (16GB), or $499 (32GB) with a new two-year contract. For those who are not eligible for an early upgrade or who wish to buy iPhone as a gift, the prices are $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). In CA, MA, and RI, sales tax is collected on the unbundled price of iPhone."

  • Question about upgrade and original iPhone

There might be other thread already, but have a question about upgrade to 3G.
I have the original iPhone and have upgraded to iPhone 3G.
The question is whether I can use the original iPhone indefinitely.
People at Apple store was telling me I can use the original iPhone (without the phone functionality) as long as I don't restore the firmware.
Is this true? What happens if Apple releases firmware in the future? Would this mean that I can only use this as long as machine doesn't require restore? I wanted to give it to one of my family members so she can use it as iPod so any info would be helpful ....

My understanding is the same as the Apple Store Employee.
If you try to update the software on an iphone with no service, I believe that it will be rendered useless.
It may be possible to swap the SIM card for software upgrades, etc., not sure.

  • Original iPhone 2.0 Upgrade:  Where did all my memory go?

Upgraded my original iPhone to 2.0 last night. Now I have absolutely no memory. My 8.0 of memory is consumed by 5.51 GB of "other." Have erased all my photos and everything else I can ... have reset the iPhone ... nothing works. Could it be that the new "Contacts" application is eating up all my memory? I am also having all sorts of syncing problems with my address book and calendar, but that can wait for another day. Help!

That's just an error that sometimes happens. Reading that much "other" must be an error and can only be fixed by doing a restore in iTunes. No one could possibly download over 5 gigs of apps. Restore it in iTunes by making sure it does a backup and then restore from that backup. If you still have the problem, you'll need to restore it as a "new phone." And if THAT doesn't fix it, your only other option is to take it back and get a replacement.
