Original iPhone won't sleep or turn off

The unit seems to function fine (apps, calls, voicemail) but after twenty seconds in sleep mode, it wakes itself back up for twenty seconds, then repeats. When coming out of sleep mode, it flashes what looks like a text message box for a fraction of a second, too fast to read. I've tried to turn it off completely but when I do it automatically turns itself back on. This is the 4G model.

I had the same issue with my iPhone 3G, and -- purely on a hunch -- fixed it by draining the battery completely (until the iPhone turned itself off). I then charged the iPhone for about 10 minutes (only so I could turn it back on), and then tried turning it off (using the "slide to power off" feature). This time it stayed off. I have tested it a few times since, and so far have not come across the same problem again.
A quicker way of draining the battery would be to turn up your brightness all the way, turn on push email/location services/3G (if they are not already on), and start a photo slideshow to accelerate the battery usage (and possibly prevent burn-in).
Hope that helps.
PS Do any of you use a third party sync cable? (such as a Griffin Powerjolt USB cable.)

  • HELP please... iPhone won't start or turn off. Apple logo only

I try to reboot the phone w/by pressing the button on top and the button on the bottom of the face of the phone. The phone will go dark then come back w/just the apple logo... it goes no where else.
    HELP

Known issue (better to say known quirk, not issue, however Apple should document it.) When you force boot the phone while it is loaded and running you corrupt some database and next boot will take a long time to rebuild this information. My 32GB 3Gs can take up to 7-8 minutes to boot as I have it full of music and I think it's rebuilding the music database during this long boot startup. The situation you are in now is that you have to wait for it to finish booting. The best way I have found if you phone is not stuck is to push top button until you get Red slider to turn off, slide it and allow phone to power off itself. Once off, Hold Top button and Home buttons, Keep holding them, you will see Apple logo pop up, KEEP HOLDING BUTTONS, do not release them until Apple logo goes away. If when you release both buttons the phone starts up and you see the Apple logo you have not held the buttons long enough as it sometimes will need to cycle down twice. When you have it right, when you release both buttons the screen will stay black and phone will not auto-power up. In this state the phone is fully off, not in standby. If you have previously powered the phone off gracefully with the top-button+swipe then hit top button for a couple of seconds and Apple logo should appear and phone should boot within a minute and be ready for use. If you cycled the phone without first gracefully shutting down, the bootup process can take much longer, give it at least 10 minutes before giving up. I have not found this documented by Apple anywhere, I found it from trial and error. My wife has 16GB 3Gs and while playing with both I found this out. Hope it helps you.

  • I have an iPhone 5 and lately the battery won't last, it turns off at 20%, what could it be?

I have an iPhone 5 and lately the battery won't last, it turns off at 20%, what could it be? I have to recharge 3 times per day

I heard from an apple specilist once that it is good to let your iPhone die atleast once a month. My iPhone 5 battery lasts all day if I charge it before I go to bed. Try not using your iPhone when it is charging. If you don't notice a difference soon, consult with the apple store

  • Ipad won't charge unless turned off

My iPad 2 won't charge unless turned off and in some cases not at all.  It does this off and on.  Typically, it'll stop charging when turned on and I can turn it off and charge it to over 40% (or so. . . .it varies) and then it will charge the rest of the way while turned on. And then, I can go through long periods --maybe a month-- where it will charge as usual (while on) but then suddenly it will stop charging while on and will only do so when off.  This back and forth has gone on for several months. Today it stopped charging even when off.  Given history, it might kick in and start charging suddenly but I fear that the battery could run out this time and I'll not be able to charge and restart it. I'm at 20%.  I am using the iPad 10W charger and I have a new one so the cord is good and it works to charge my iPhone as well.  I have also tried rebooting the system, holding down the home and start button.  Anyone have experience with this and a solution?

you can also try the universal troubleshooting step of resetting your iPad. No data is lost so don't worry.
You can reset your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.

my iphone just went all hot turned off and now wont turn back on, any ideas??

Let it cool and then reset it... press the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

is there anything apple could do if i took it to one of their main shops???

    Sounds like a hardware failure.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and take it in for them to look at. It will probably need to be replaced.

  • Should iphone 4 receive messages when turned off and display them when switched back on

should iphone 4 receive messages when turned off and display them when switched back on

It's up to the cellular carrier, but I believe most (if not all) will enqueue the messages when your iPhone is off.
So generally speaking, a few minutes after you turn your iPhone on, your messages should display.  Similarly, your voicemails would arrive.

  • Which is better for computer and program... sleep or turn off?

When not using, which is better for the program, sleep or turn off the computer and any explanations are welcome...

I advise shutting down rather than sleep. A good shut down often clears up nascent problems, and of course you're saving electricity by not running your machine and also saving those precious MTBF hours on all the mechanical components. Think of the hours it would sleep vs. the number of hours you actually use the machine. Even though sleep consumes less electricity, it still consumes.

hello everyone...I got my very first macbook pro just today and i have a problem deleting the "test" user account. if i can't delete it, the system won't let me turn off the system. I don't know what to do! HELP!!!!

Have you created another admin user? Go to system preferences click users and click the + to add a user; if you haven't already. Once you have another admin user other then the "test" user make sure you're signed out of the test user account. Sign in with the alternate ADMIN USER that you just created or had created already and go back to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and click the same USERS icon near the bottom. Now select the TEST user and click the - sign. This should prompt you if your sure you want to delete the user account. And your done.
New User created and Test User deleted... I hope this helps.

  • HT4759 Can I locate my Iphone 5 if it's turned off

Please can any1 tell me my partner has misplaced
Her iPhone 5 & it's turned off is there anyway 2 locate or does it have 2 be turned on
    Any help fanks

You can't locate a phone which is off because it needs to be able to transmit its location data to the network, and it has to be on to do that (and able to connect to a network).
