Original Mini w/o Monitor as FW Drive??

Question is how to use a MacMini without needing a monitor attached.
It is a PowerPC running 10.4.11
It is an original (first issue) Mac Mini that works fine but without a monitor as have later ones now in use.
I realize I could pull the internal HD and put it into a FW case...but maybe not necessary??
Want to set it up somehow to use is some manner WITHOUT an attached monitor (or need to attach one).
Maybe as a FW drive connected by FW cable to FW network of another MacMini?
Or... what if a monitor is attached long enough to
   1. set up the Mini1 for network connections and then attached to the USB network
   2. attach to the Ethernet network via the wired router.
      using it for databackup???

I have an elderly Mac mini that I am running "headless" (no monitor, mouse, keyboard) as a server. I control it via Apple Remote Management Services. Mine is recent enough that I can run the current OS X server app and it serves very well for sharing files, a local web site server, mail server, etc. The only downside has been having to temporarily run with a "head" while doing the Mavericks upgrade.

  • Mac Mini won't read external hard drive

    Hello, I have an external Toshiba hard drive and my Mac Mini will not read it.  It was originally used on Windows.  I plugged the hard drive into my Macbook and it worked as a read-only device.  I can take stuff off of it but can not write stuff onto it on my Macbook.  I want to use it so I can back up files on my Mac Mini, but it will not read it.  I know I have to format it to make it writable with Mac, but I want to make it a read only device on my Mac Mini because I want to back up all the data already on it and my Mac Mini has 400gb of its hard drive available.  How can I get my Mac Mini to read the Hard Drive?

    If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
    Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
    If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
    If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
    Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
    Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
    If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
    Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
    Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
    If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

    I have an existing mini mac and 4 tb external drive.
    My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
    I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..
    what do i need to do ?
    I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

    I had already tried that one and got this...
    below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
    and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
    There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
    Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?
    thanks for help

  • How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folder within the artist folder.

    How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

    Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

    Can I connect a Mac mini to iMac monitor ? To view Mac mini files

    Hi Ricemail,
    You *may* be able to do so, depending on the specific models of your iMac and Mac Mini, using a feature known as Target Display Mode. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Mini with dual monitors

    Hi, I'd like to set up a mini using two monitors, both VGA ,
    and both running different resolutions and different apps.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks,
    Carl

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    The Mac mini has two video ports; mini-DVI and mini-DisplayPort. The mini ships with an Apple mini-DVI to DVI-D adapter which will not help you in this situation. You could purchase a mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter and a mini-DVI to VGA adapter and then use VGA to VGA cables to connect the adapters to your displays' VGA ports. This setup can support up to 1920 x 1200 pixels, and can be configured in extended desktop mode, allowing you to place different apps in each display's field of view. However, only one of the two displays will have the menu bar, so even with the windows for an app on the other display, all running apps are controlled from the display with the menu bar.

  • Problems - Original Mini Ipod

    I went into the Apple Store In Bloomington MN to have it looked at. About 2 months ago I started having problems with the Mini Ipod. It was playing songs out of tune / scratchy. Almost like you are tuning into a radio station and do not get clear reception.
    The Genius at the Apple Store indicated that there was a problem with some pressure points on the front of the Mini outside the control wheel. That she recently received notification that this was a problem recognized by Apple with the original Mini Ipods, but that I was out of warranty so it would not be covered. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Should I resign myself to having to replace it? This really BITES since other then this problem it has worked well.

    Hmm..
    You are out of warranty so whatever you decide to do, you are going to have to spend some $$.
    I've never heard of such problem before.

  • Is there a way 2 rite prog to continuously monitor the CD Drive?

    Hello,
    I want to write a program which will be monitoring the CD drive continuously from the time the computer has started till it is shutdown.(i.e whether a CD has been inserted or not)
    I have tried to search the API's for a class that might help but can't find any.
    I will be grateful if you can help me out
    Thankyou

    You could try something like this if you feel inclined:
    import java.io.*;
    class CheckEDrive  extends Thread {
      public static void main(String[] argv) {
        new CheckEDrive().start();
      public void run() {
        try {
          while (true) {
            Process myProcess = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c start e:");
            Thread.sleep(10000);
            myProcess.destroy();
            Thread.sleep(50000);
        catch(InterruptedException ie) {
          System.out.println(ie);
        catch(IOException ioe) {
          System.out.println(ioe);
    }

It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. I just feel un easy about this. ha.

    You can in fact buy what you want, no need to go with Apple TV
    To connect (wirelessly) your Mac to the HDMI on the TV:
    They range from $100 on up.

  • Mac Mini HDD failure, no CD/DVD drive...How do I boot?

    My hard drive failed on my Mac Mini 2011. I don't have a CD/DVD drive on it. How do I boot to the disk utility ore restore utility?
    I downloaded and installed the mac remote boot on a thumb drive, using my wifes mac. I've tried rebooting my mac with the thumb drive in and nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command button, nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command+S, nothing but grey screen. I tried by holding down the Command+R, nothing but grey screen.
    The hard drive is making a bunch of loud clicking noises.
    If I buy a new drive and install it, how do I get the OS onto it and get it up and running, if the Command, Command+R do not work?

    Once your hard drive crashes there is nothing you can really do.  The recovery partition is on your hard drive do the Command keys will not find the recovery partition.  It will also check your usb, dvd, and firewire ports.  If there is nothing there, then it is just a grey screen.  So....
    1st Option bring you Mac Mini, after you replace your hard drive, to an Apple Store and have them reinstall the OS.  They will not charge you for this or least they did not for me when my hard drive crashed.  The only fall back is that they will only put the OS that the computer came with.  So, if it came with Lion, Apple will only install Lion.
    2nd Option is to find a friend with a Mac (any mac) and have him/her create a usb boot drive that has the OS.  If you google "OS X Boot Drive" you will find a bunch of how to sites.  You will need atleast 8GB usb drive.
    3rd Option is to buy the Apple branded Lion USB drive.  Not my most favorite but it is an option.

  • Mac mini usb 3.0 and external drive with Sleep issue

    I have now a new mini with USB3.0.
    I attached an external sharkoon sata quickport h3.
    If i use an USB 2 cable everything is fine.
    When i use USB 3 cable then after sleep, OSX says that the external drive was not properly dismounted....

    So, i tried an external USB3 2,5" harddrive and it works directly on the mini.
    When i plug this drive to the sharkoon, it doesn't work.
    So it seems that the USB3 Hub of sharkoon isn't working properly with the power managament of osx.
