Original/modified folders

Hello,
I'm new to iPhoto and have done some searching online and have played around with settings but still am confused with iPhoto. This is what's happening...
I have copied all of my photo folders from my PC to the pictures folder on my mac into a folder called "my photos".
I then import those photos into iPhoto (have tried with both the copy feature on and off in preferences). Either way I still end up with 3 copies of photos, 4 including the one located in the "my photos" folder.
I've looked in the contents package and see two folders: modified and original.
In the original folder I have a copy of a photo in a folder under the same name as "my photos", I also have another original folder with in the original folder with an alias to that photo.
Then in modified folder I also have another original folder, with yet another copy of that same photo.
Sorry if I've made your head hurt, mine does...
That's two copies of the same photo, plus the copy in "my photos" and an alias of that photos. Is this seriously how this works, four copies of one photo? (I realize at this point I can delete the photos in "my photos").
Is there also a way to not have the originals pictures/folder show up under the photos (under events) under the library?
Thanks for any help/suggestions...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The iPhoto Library Manager site has some excellent documentation about the iPhoto library. This section covers iPhoto from Version 4 to today: About iPhoto libraries.
When a photo is imported and copied into iPhoto two versions of it are created, the original and a thumbnail. If your camera has the autorotation capability and it's activated a 3rd version of portrait photos will be created. That's because the portrait file only has a tag telling applications that can read that tag how to display it. iPhoto creates a physical rotated version so that when used in other apps that can't read the tag the photo will be displayed correctly.
You can avoid this modified version by turning off the autorotation, uploading to a folder on the Desktop, find and rotate those portrait photos and then import into iPhoto.
Since iPhoto is a database based image management system and not a folder based system there's never any reason to journey inside the iPhoto library package via the Finder. If you need access to a photo for use outside of iPhoto the following is from one of *Terence Devlin’s posts* on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It’s the definitive treatise on the subject.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the iPhoto Library Folder directly has never been supported in any version of iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For Users of 10.5 and later
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
For users of 10.4 and later ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: faster and b: Safer than rooting around in the old Library Folder.
iPhoto has what is known as nondestructive editing. It keeps the original file as a digital negative like all DAM (digital asset management) applications. The first edit creates a modified file (if it's not a portrait photo). Additional edits to the same photo are recored in the library's database telling iPhoto how to display the photo. This way we're always only 1 generation of jpeg compression away from the original photo. While editing a photos you can compare the original with the edit by holding down the Shift key. If you want to return to the original image either use the Photos->Revert to Original menu option or Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select "Revert to Original" from the drop down menu.
Bottom line is just learn to use iPhoto's features and don't worry about what's under the hood.

  • Should I have Copies in 3 Folders - Data, Original & Modified?

I have a Powerbook G4 that is running out of Hard Disk space & I am looking for opportunities to find some space. I have not touched ANY of the files in the iPhotot Library, as I know that is a no-no, but it looks like I have copies of all pictures in 2 files: Original & Data. & then, for pictures I have modified, there are also copies of those in Modified. I understand the Original & Modified folders. But what about the Data folder? Should it be there? Do I need it?
I do have a back-up hard drive with copies of everything, but I still need to access my photos when I am not in the office, so simply moving them all to my back-up isn't a great option. I'm also wondering if I delete some photos from my Laptop after I back them up, when I do my next back-up will the photos I deleted from my laptop also be deleted off of my back-up copy?
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful.....I will get a new Mac Laptop in the Spring, but just trying to stretch my harddrive capacity a bit longer....
    Thank You!!!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, everything is correct. The "Data" folder contains thumbnails rather than full-sized files.
First, back up by dragging (copying) the library folder AS AN ENTITY to the backup location. Do NOT attempt to back up portions.
Second, do all your deletions by accessing the library from INSIDE iPhoto. The backup will not be impacted.
Third, you might want to break your library into several DVD-sized libraries (this might take some educated guesses). I did it by duplicating my library several times and then carefully deleting appropriate photos from each one. Back them all up the normal way and also burn each one onto DVD and carry a pack of DVDs with you when you travel. With multiple libraries, you need to change the name of each library folder to something that makes sense to you (that's the ONE safe change that you can make to the library). iPhoto will always remember the most recent library that it accessed. Whenever you wish to change to a different library, hold down the Option/Alt key while starting iPhoto and follow directions.

  • Backing Up:  Full iPhoto Fill/Folder or just Original & Modified files?

If you're backing up to a server and you have unlimited storage space - would you:
a.)  Copy your entire iPhoto Library file (which copies as an iPhoto Library Folder) with ALL of the Package Contents?
    - OR -
b.)  Just copy over the Originals & Modified Folders?
Are there any reasons why I'd absolutely want to do one over the other?
Am I right when I assume all you'd need to do to "get your photos and videos back" (if there was a crash) or move them onto a new computer - would be to click and drag the Original & Modified Folders back into iPhoto?  (I have heard if you want to keep them organized instead of dragging the whole folders in - you could go into the folders and drag their contents/subfolders....True?)
Thank you in advance for everyone's help!

  • Data, Original and Modified folders?

sorry, this may be a dumb question, but what's the difference between Data, Original and Modified folders? when I do a search for a specific folder, i find that I will find all the folders and there looks like duplicates but they are filed in Data, Original and sometimes additionally under Modified.
    thanks!

A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Please remember that Finder searches do not really understand your iPhoto Library. If you use iPhoto the correct way to search for photos is via the iPhoto Window.

  • Need to restrict users from adding or modifying folders or reports

Requirement: Need to restrict users from adding or modifying folders or reports through Info view and to reflect the modifications only thriough LCM.
Issue: Customer wants to restrict users from adding or modifying existing reports from Infoview and need to force users to do make the changes through Life cycle manager tool.
As per my understanding LCM can only be used to to promote folders and objects from one environment to another and to schedule the promotion of these jobs on a daily basis. My query is:
Can we add or modify existing reports or folders using the LCM tool?
Could you please help me out in this issue and provide me your suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.
    Prashanthi Rayaprolu.

You can not restrict that using LCM. Need to modify the rights at the folder level.
Explicitly remove the following rights for the user group,
    Add objects to the folder
    Edit objects
    Delete objects
Copy objects to another folder (check this if required)
Once the above four are denied then users wont be able to Edit/Add/Delete reports in that folder.

  • Anyone know how I can transfer my playlist from iphone to Itunes on my laptop. Computer had crashed. I am unable to export. I had backed up songs to icloud which are now on my laptop however without the original playlists folders?

Anyone know if I can transfer my playlist from iphone to Itunes on my laptop.
I am not keen to sync my iphone to my new laptop in case it wipes out my playlist.
My Computer had crashed so I am unable to export a playlist.
I had backed up songs to icloud which are now on my laptop however without the original playlists folders?
    Any suggestions?

    Hello CDA ENT
I would turn off the automatic syncing so that way you can see what is on your iPhone. From there, you should be able to see what is on your iPhone and then can export out the playlists and then import them back to your library. I would also recommend backing up your iPhone before going through with this process. To export a playlist, have it highlighted then go to File > Library > Export Playlist…
iTunes: How to backup and restore playlists

Open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. Select the option to prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.

  • SCCM 2012 R2 - Remove ability to modify folders and retain create collection

    Hi All,
I am working through Role Based administration permissions and running into some hold ups.  I am currently
attempting to segregate access for "Edge Administrators" in a way that they can only manage their own items.  essentially i would be setting up a lower level administrator role which has the ability to manage all functions excluding infrastructure
items.  I have pretty well configured it exactly as i need however i am not able to remove the ability to create and modify folders within the tree.  In most cases this would not be a big deal but i am trying to remove all possibility for these "Edge
Administrators" to modify anything outside of their assigned scopes and collections.
Has anyone had success with setting this sort of thing up?  i can remove the ability to manage folders however
this removes the ability for the admins to create collections.  any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JAK

Folders are not subject to RBA so there's no way to prevent that IIRC.

  • How can I merge original and modified folders in iphoto library?

I see 2 folders within iPhoto library - originial and modified. Original folder keeps all pictures in original and modified has the edited version for picture I edit. So iPhoto basically keeps 2 version for any picture I modify, which takes a lot of space.
I would like to have just one copy for each picture (original picture or only modified version of the picture if I edit) - this way I think I would save a lot of memory. Could someone please advise
    1. if there is any iPhoto settings that I change, so that it starts saving only 1 copy for each picture
    2. If I could something with my already existing pictures - i.e. if there is a way I can delete "original" version of only those pictures for which "modified" version is available.
Let me know if anything is not clear or you need any more information. Thanks in advance.

    Don't use iPhoto.
Iphoto is a Digital Asset Manager designed to protect your original file at all costs. In other words it treats the original like a film shooter treats the negative. This is hard-wired into iPhoto, it's the very heart of the programme. If you don't want that feature, don't use iPhoto/
Note that there are different versions of the photo, they are not copies. The Original is required for the Non-Destructive editing feature in iPhoto.
So, specifically, no you cannot merge the two folders - and by the way, doing so won't save any memory at all, just some diks space.
    1. if there is any iPhoto settings that I change, so that it starts saving only 1 copy for each picture
    There isn't.
    2. If I could something with my already existing pictures - i.e. if there is a way I can delete "original" version of only those pictures for which "modified" version is available.
    There isn't.
If space is an issue: use an external drive for the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Or, just use an app that works the way you want.

  • What is the difference between the 3 folders Data, Original & Modified.

When viewing my photos in iphoto if I go to pictures > iphoto library I see for folders. Data, ipod photo cache, Originals & Modified. I want to know why there is a folder labeled Data and what is its use . Why is it there?

    Tj005
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:

    1. Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
    2. Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
    3. Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
All of the files and folders are necessary for iPhoto to work.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

  • IPhoto 09 library package original and modified folders

Why is there an 'original' folder and a 'modified' folder in the library?

Picasa uses a hack to access the iPhoto Library rather than the standard APIs that Apple provides for other applications. Because the access to the Library is via an unsupported method, this means that at any point in the future an update to iPhoto could render the Library inaccessible to Picasa. You could find your photos inaccessible to you until the makers of Picasa re-work their hack.
Picasa is an excellent application, but you need to be aware of some differences between it and iPhoto.
    1. iPhoto is integrated throughout the OS and is available in every Open... or Attach... dialogue in the OS.
    2. iPhoto is colour managed.
    3. iPhoto can integrate with a wide range of online sharing sites.
    4. iPhoto has Keepsakes: books, calendar and so on
    5. iPhoto has an excellent range of Slideshows.
Finally, and this may or may not be important to you, but when you install Picasa you accept an End User licence that allows Google to update the application when it wants to, with no further recourse to you. Should their be a problem with an update, as can happen to any software developer from time to time, you have no way of refusing that update.

  • "DATA" "ORIGINAL" "MODIFIED" Why save pictures in 3different places?

What use has it to store photos in those three different places? Does it not eat up more space that way?
When burning a photo-CD, the three versions of the photos come up on the Cd, can I not avoid that, and only have the version of the photos I chose on the Iphoto panel?

(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So you can see there is no actual duplication, and each version of the photo has a role to play.
If you want to burn an CD without all the versions then select your photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export, and export the files to a folder o the desktop. Then burn the disc with the finder.

  • IPhoto duplicated photos showing Originals and Modified folders?

Upon importing photos to iPhoto, many folders were duplicated. One folder has "Originals" and the other folder has the numbers you see in the iPhoto folder system such as "18" and "21." I understand that when you import photos, it places a copy in the originals folder. I"m assuming this is used when you use the "Revert to Originals" function. Why is iPhoto showing both copies? How can I turn this off? I'm assuming I don't want to delete one of these. This is not simply duplicates were downloaded.
    thanks!

    PostPunk:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It sounds like you imported a library into a new library when you upgraded to iPhoto 8 rather than let iPhoto 8 convert the older library to the new version. That method will import both the modified version along with the original as originals. If this is not what happened please describe how you went about importing the photos, where they came from, etc.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Export iPhoto Library in original, to folders named per Event

I have a need to export out my entire photo library in its original format (photos and videos) but I want to land the exported version in folders that are named by Events in iPhoto. I am on 10.6.4 with iPhoto '09 (8.1.2).
Any way to achieve this via AppleScript/Automator/anything else?

What advice were you looking for?

  • I have placed items in the trash can and I want them restored to their original file folders. How can I do this?Ihave a Macbook with the Mac OS X 10.5.8 software on it.

Please help me. I know I can place them on the desk top, and return each file one-by-one, but is time consuming. My time machine was backedup back in september, and I don't want to lose pics I took and saved since then. Please let me know if thre is a "restore" or "put back" feature on the Mac OS X 10.5.8.
    Kind Regards,
    Steve

I don't think "Put Back" is available in 10.5. Might try Cmd-delete (but if Put Back is not available, I guess the shortcut won't be either.) If the shortcut works, you must restore them one by one.
If they are not from your user, you do not want to move them first to the Desktop and then move them to their original locations. Doing so will complete screw up their Permissions. If these are not from your home folder and If Put Back is not available, you must use what will be the very tedious sudo mv command in Terminal for each. But sounds like they are from your user, since they are pictures.

  • Un-modified folders with changed modification dates

I have several folders that I have not touched for months, and suddenly, they all have the same modification date & time. The files inside the folders have the correct dates on them (some are two years old).
This seems to be happening with only one folder, which itself is in the Documents folder. There is an alias to it on the sidebar. Inside that folder, just today, 53 folders all changed their modification dates with out me even looking at them!
This is highly annoying, as it is a folder in which I store jobs that I have completed. Any solutions?

This was the result of a syncing application, not Mac OS. Removed application, problem solved.
