Original monitor died (lots of smoke)

I recently aquired a "Yikes" G4, complete with a bloody huge fifty-pound monitor, which had been sitting in storage for the past five years. I fixed the original problem with the computer, blown out a few cupsful of dust, and fired her up.
The monitor, after roughly two hours, went BANG and smoked up the place.
Okay, here's the questions:
1. The computer has two identical video cards, both of them identified only by a ATI Rage 128 logo on one side. I assume they are both ATI Rage 128 Pros, but one - the one located in the #1 slot - has an odd attachment. A sort of bridge with "Apple Computer, Inc. c 1998 820-1012-A" on it's only visible side. It's a small card which is attached to a series of prongs across the top of the video card and is locked in place with two small column shaped places supports. The second card in the #3 slot lacks this widgit, but is identical to the first card in all other aspects.
***, people? Any explanations for what I'm looking at?
2. Replacement monitor ... any suggestions? While working on it, since the original monitor "popped," I've had it hooked up to my wife's HP monitor, but - given the slight wave and bad look to the edges of the image - I can't imagine that this is very good for that monitor. What CRT monitors should I be looking at and does anyone know what sort of flat screen this particular card will support?
Thanks for all your help
G4 (pci)   Mac OS 9.2.x

The interesting looking Rage 128 you are looking is likely to be a Mac OEM card, as for the attachment, it might be the DVD decoder that the PCI based Rage Pro's needed to have to have for DVD playback, if you machine has a DVD drive.
As for a monitor, most 15" or 17" CRT or LCDs should work fine, maybe even some 19" or 20" models also.

    Boa tarde.

    - entra no LOOP * determine Batchstatus and Errorstatus* - LOOP AT lt_batch INTO ls_batch.
Agora temos 2 sistemas (DV2 e QAS) gerando informações no PID.
Tem mais alguma função que poderia fazer alguma consistência nas informações da tabela  "et_batch_data" antes de mostrá-la no browser ?
    Muito obrigado.

  • 2nd Monitor died - How does one grab tools back from "that" desktop?

    Hi -
One of our two monitors died. There are tools on the 2nd monitor's desktop that we can't "see" until the 2nd monitor returns. How do we pull those tools over to the main desktop?
Also, there are a few finder windows that are too large to grab the bottom scaler and shrink them back. (There is no tool bar on the top of the second monitor giving just a little bit more room.) Is there a minimize button somewhere for "finder" windows?
    Thanks!

Ps - just found the "zoom" button on my own - so - I have the finder windows under control - now to learn how to get to that other desktop without the view into the other desktop!

  • Help! My Monitor died!

I apparantly need to replace the monitor for my G4 and can't figure out what will work on it. My husband seems to think that since the original was a VGA, that it needs to be replaced by another VGA. Is it possible that a TFT monitor would work (or whatever you call a flat panel display). Are there any other options available?
We took the original one to the Apple store to be checked out and they couldn't get it to work, so I think it's probably a lost cause. I figure a replacement is necessary, but I don't want to have to put a lot of money into a new one.
    G4 Graphics, G4ibook   Mac OS 9.0.x

What model Mac do you have? You say you have a VGA port, so your Mac is probably not an MDD or FW800 model. If you are not sure, check here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
Or you can type in your serial number on the main Apple Support page, where it says "About your Apple product".
If you have a VGA port then you can surely use any VGA monitor. Is that the only port you have for video? If so, it may be possible to use a DVI or ADC flat panel monitor with an adapter such as this.

  • Monitor dying?

For about a 2 weeks now as the computer warms up, various colored pixels or interference comes on the screen but is only seen while the screen is black such as loading games. When doing normal thing such as web browsing or playing the game it is fine. The interference appears color static such as you would see when you turn on electrical stuff to close to an tv or CRT. I've asked a few times but still no definitive answer or anyone who has had then issue with the same generation of Imac. I've also been told it could be related to a bad or dying mother board. I would like to add that this is the only issue I have so far, i have not experienced random shutdowns or lock ups, crashes, freezes etc..which could come with a mother board or power supply issue.

  • Monitor Died need connector

    Hi,
I have a iMac pedestal version which has worked great for years, however the screen just died. I thought about connecting the computer up to another monitor or TV so wanted a connector. I bought a mini-DVI to VGA connector but it's the wrong part (the DVI connector is wrong). Does anybody know the part number for the connector I need?
    Thanks

Apple has specs on their support page.

But I like the format used by EveryMac.com better. Find your iMac G4 model here and take a look.

  • My airport doesn't manually shut down: airport icon is off, but activity monitor shows lots of packets still flowing. Its not my activity- all updates turned off. Virus?

I'm running a Macbook Pro circa 2007 with OSX 10.6.8 and Firefox 27.0.1, and just had a circumstance that really puzzled me. I have a Hughesnet satellite modem with wireless router that I connect to via the airport, and I use Little Snitch software in the demo mode so I know and have to approve which software can send info through the internet connection., but the demo mode had just timed out and terminated and within a half hour of that the computer fans started speeding up to max and the CPU got blazing hot (+200 degF).
Worried, I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing lots of internet activity even though I wasn't doing anything on the internet at the time, and I have all my software updates set to manual because otherwise they would use up my allotted daytime bandwidth and leave none for me. I'd already completed manual software updates during the nightly free time recently. Fearing my computer was hijacked & out of my control, I turned the airport off to terminate the internet connection, BUT IT DIDN'T TURN OFF, and though the indicator in the top right of the screen said it was off, packets were still streaming back & forth like crazy on the activity monitor, and the poor thing was still overheating. So I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up there was no internet activity, and things started cooling down, back to normal again.
Though I'm no techie, this seems to me like my computer has been hijacked by some virus that has taken control of the airport and is feeding me lies about the internet connection status, so that it can use my computer for sending out its own messages. Has anyone heard of a virus that prevents the airport from being turned off, and what should I do about it? I'm afraid to back up my data with my time machine, though its been months since that was done, for fear I'd overwrite a virus-free state of the time machine files with a virus laden one, but I also hate to do something to clean up the machine without backing up my files, and lose a bunch of data. Is there virus protection software that could surgically search out and remove only the virus from my machine and leave most everything else untouched?
    Any advice is welcome,
    Christina

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try Changing the Airport Channel
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.

  • Powerbook monitor died...how do i recover files?

I have a powerbook titanium and the monitor has died. It would cost like 400$ to replace the monitor so i bought a new macbook. how would i go about getting my data in the harddrive out? I was thinking two solutions
    1) remove hardrdive put it in a ide 2.5 inch enclosure connect it to a laptop?
    2) plug it into a external monitor hit the hot key to switch to external monitor and retrive data from there
which would work best? i am new to mac.s also can i buy a used powerbook off ebay that has a working lcd and replace it myself ?
    Thanks

    Hi kkokko,
I don't run Tiger, but thought I'd heard it had a migration assistant which automatically ran when you first start up the new PB to transfer data from earlier Mac to newer Mac? Need a FW cable, but not sure if you need to connect it first or it'll ask you to do it when you set up the new MB.
Last FW cable I bought was about $12; if you google for it, you should find one for well under $20 US.

  • Monitor died for G3 Power Mac tower. What do I do?

The monitor to my G3 PowerMac just died. The power button started flashing orange and green and it won't power up.
Is there anything I can do to fix it?
If not..are there any other modern monitors that are compatible or is there a chord that can make it compatible to another monitor?

Have you tried unplugging the monitor for a few minutes? Then power it on and reboot.
I am not sure what the alternating green/orange flashes mean. What type of monitor do you have? What is the make and model?
Also, what model of PowerMac G3? Is it a Blue & White, beige desktop, beige minitower? What type of video card are you using? I am guessing from your post that you do not have another monitor to test with to rule out an issue with your computer.

  • Pls Help: monitor died, need quick access.

    Current situation:
    -Have a mac pro
-Screen died / have no backup monitor
    -Have iBook & G4 iMac
Question: Is there a quick/easy/free way to get to my iMac (like something similar to remote desktop etc...)?
I know I can boot it just to access the drives from my iBook or iMac but would like to run some of my apps.
    Many thanks!
    John

What apps do you need to run? Many vendors (Adobe especially) have trial downloads of their apps that might hold you over until the display is replaced.
Unless you enabled a Remote Desktop user or SSH in System Preferences>Sharing before your display died you'll have a tough time accessing anything over a network. If you have another Intel based machine you could boot it from the Mac Pro's HD and access it that way, but I'm afraid that's not an option with your two PPC Macs.

  • Original HD died

the original 30 gig HD that came w/ tower back in 99 has died. I thought it would have gone a long time ago - so I had added a 60 gig and a 250 gig and made the 250 the main start up HD. Now that the original 30 has died and will not show up on the screen nor can I reformat, etc. - can I remove it without any problems to the comp? It is in the original start up bay (if there is such a term). The 60 uses the power etc. cable that piggy-backs from the old 30 (not sure if that makes sense).
Currently when turning on the comp - it says cannot read disk installed - do you want to...... I would like to get rid of the drive and not have to read that any more.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    ~bruce.

    1) Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard (with the Optional Rosetta) into it and then you can dual-boot (System Preferences:Startup Disk) into Snow Leopard and run FCE 3.5 there.
    2)  Use one of the following methods to install FCE 3.5 into Mavericks:
    a)  Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/
    b)  Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:  http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html
Reports on this forum seem to confirm that Final Cut Studio 2 will continue to operate in Mavericks once it is functionally installed, albeit some plug-ins may fail to function.  FCE 3.5 is the same generation as FCS2, and presumably will continue to operate in Mavericks, as well.

  • How to install and authorize cs6 web and design on alternate computer when original computer died ?

The motherboard on my original computer got fried but I could install the hard drive in another computer. How do I reauthorize my cs6 web and design on the new computer as I am not able to deactivate from original computer ?

if you need an activation count reset, contact adobe support by clicking here and, when available, click 'still need help', https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
you'll know you need one because you see an error message about exceeding your activation count when trying to activate on your new computer.

  • Performa monitor died-options?

The monitor on the 6116CD went to black with a bright horizontal streak of light across the middle of the screen. I have replaced the battey in this computer 3 times over the years--the last time about 3 weeks ago. I think the monitor is gone and I had decided to retire the Performa (as I had posted earlier). But now I can't remove any data. I am wondering if there is a market for the computer only (the cd drive won't read now), or how can I dispose of this old friend? Should I just put it out with the trash? Before the monitor crash the computer was working fine. I would appreciate suggestions from anyone who has dealt with this problem.
    Ann

"I'll have to find a monitor that will work--"
If you want an inexpensive solution, check any thrift stores in your area that sell donated computers, monitors, etc. Since LCD displays are more affordable now, many of the older "CRT" type displays are being donated, as users replace them with LCD models. I've seen many priced at $15 or less. Be warned that donated electronic equipment isn't necessarily working when dropped off, or tested by the thrift stores upon receipt. If you can't test one in the store, I'd base my decision to buy on the physical condition of the display. Hopefully (but not necessarily), a display that appears to have been carefully handled and well-maintained would be a better candidate for purchase. Obviously, electronic component failure - permanent or intermittent - isn't cosmetic, and the best-looking used display could be one with internal problems.

  • My Macbook pro monitor died!

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010). Yesterday i conected it to a videobin. After that the monitor is not working anymore, when i conected to my television i can see everythin thru the tv, but it doesnt show in the monitor.  Any ideas?

I read the above thread but at the bottom, it says that I would need to connect the G4 to a monitor (which I don't have), or remove the hard drive and connect it to another Mac (I didn't know that this was even possible but I know I don't have whatever it would take). Maybe I'll just remove the hard drive and dispose of it like japamac advises.
    Thanks for your quick response.
