Original Photo Saved After an Edit?

I want to edit some of my pictures, but want to be able to return to the original picture later.
Does iphoto '08 save an original copy somewhere and if so, where? I am concerned that the"original" photo is lost after an edit change.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
iPhoto preserves your original file at all times. All operations - edits, exports, whatever - are carried out on an copy of the original. You can revert to the original at any time by using the Photos -> Revert to Original command.

  • How to edit a original photo saved on my hdd in iPhoto without copying?

I have all my photos organized into folders saved in Pictures on my HDD, and i have unchecked the box in iPhoto which copies them into iPhoto, but what I want to know is how do I edit the original photo? it is edited in iPhoto but not in the original location (that picture is still the old one) i don't really understand why you would want 2 of the same picture, saved in different locations? I want to edit in iPhoto and it change the original! can this be done?? if not what app can?? Thanks!

iPhoto is not a Photo editor. That's what you're looking for. iPhoto will never edit an original file, that's why it's a lossless processor. Photoshop et al are editors, they will change the original file and so are lossy editors. You prefer that way of working so you're best off not using iPhoto at all.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)

  • Can anyone tell me how to separate original photo files from the edited files in Photoshop Elements 13?

We run a child sponsorship program and we only use the edited files and delete the originals after they are edited due to space restrictions. We are using Mac's and we save our photo files each month into a folder (Not Iphoto) and then pull them into Photoshop Elements 13 to edit and resize.  When they are saved, Photoshop Organizer saves the edited files in the same file folder as the original.  We then have to manually go through and delete the original Photos.  We tried exporting and that does only export the edited files, but is there any way to edit photos and then the edited photos go into a separate file?

For all 5000 photos?  Surely there is a simpler way after we go through and crop each photo and clean it up and then resize it?
I imagine that what you want, once you have edited your month files in their month folder, is to delete the original and keep only the 'top' file in the version set. Then select all the files in your folder (Ctrl A), right click on any thumbnail and choose 'Version set'. In the dialog that opens, select 'flatten version sets'.

  • Update iWeb photo page after re-editing photos?

Some time ago, I created a page using iWeb and published a number of photos to it by sharing them from iPhoto. Since then, I have re-edited the photos in iPhoto. Is it now possible to have iWeb re-publish the page using the re-edited photos without having to start all over by re-sharing them into a new web page?
    Thanks.

    Bob:
You'll have to import the edited version into iWeb while editing that page in iWeb and replace the older version with the new.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photos showing in Photo browser after editing

Each time I edit a photo and later when I bring up the Organizer I find that photo in the Photo Brower with no tags.
Did overlook a setting in the photo editor as I would like to have only photos that I want go get later from staging folder, camera, etc.
    Please advise

    John,
Please identify which version of PSE you have - 3 or 4?
    >I would like to have only photos that I want go get later from staging folder, camera, etc.
Sorry but I do not understand your objective.
Do you not want to have the photos that you are editing in the Organizer?
You can't really edit the photo now and then go get it from the camera later - you would not have the correlation between the original photo file and its edit.
    >Each time I edit a photo and later when I bring up the Organizer I find that photo in the Photo Brower with no tags.
Was this photo in he Organizer and did it have tags before you started to edit it? If it had tags before the edit, it should still have the same tags on the edited photo file.
If you never want the photo to be in the Organzier, you can uncheck Include in Organizer box in the Save As window of the Editor. But editing first and then bringing in to the Organizer later is not really a good workflow for most situations.

Please help, i need my original photos back.

    Hi xefu5e,
    Welcome to Nokia Support Discussions!
If you are using the built-in photo editor of the phone, it will automatically replace the original one with the edited one. I would suggest using a third party application to edit your pictures as you get to save the original photo and the edited pics are being saved under a different album.

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

  • IOS 5 overwriting original photo when saving edits

I've recently upgraded to an iPhone 4S running iOS 5 and I think I've found a bug in the Photos app. When a photo is edited and saved in the Photos app, the original photo is overwritten.
I've seen this behavior on three AT&T iPhones (a 4S and two 4s). A friend with a Verizon 4S saw the behavior intermittently - sometimes Photos offered to save the edited version as a copy of the original. I don't know anyone with a 3GS to ask about this behavior.
    Anyone else?

I found two ways to restore the original photo: one easy, one stupid.
The easy way: open the photo in iPhoto for editing. Choose the crop tool. This should make the "Revert to original" button activate. Click it to restore the original photo.
The stupid way: open the photo in the Photos app for editing. Choose the crop tool. You should see your original photo with the crop marks showing where you cropped it originally. You can recrop here, if you want. Move the crop marks so the cover the entire photo and touch the Crop button to restore the original photo and save it.
@Dave, do you have an actual "revert to original" button in the Photos app on your iPhone 4? I don't have it on my iPhone 4S. I also don't have the option to save a copy, though I've seen the screen shot in various iOS 5 reviews.

  • Edited photos in iOS show original photo after import or in iPhoto for MAC

If I edit a photo using the Photos app (or one the filter integrated now with Photos app) and then import that photo to my Mac (both using iphoto or import) or PC (both using import or with cloud photo integration), and sometimes if i try to view the photo using another iOS app, the photo display the original, unedited version.
the only way seems to duplicate the picture or to send it by mail.
but when you have hundreds of pics, that is not a solution any more..
and most of all i don't even want to import both the original and the edited version.
i found this issue in an apple support page: below the link..
but that page doesn't offer a solution one most of all it says that iphoto shouldn't have the issue...
    can you help me?
    thanks
iOS: Edited photos show original photo after import or in other apps

    i verified..
well, unfortunately these solutions are both not optimal..
    Shared Album:
    - you lose all the other informations (like location, date, etc..)
    - you lose quality
    - but at least is fast
    Sent by mail:
    - it keep full resolution
    - you still lose all other informations..
    - it is ok for a picture but not good for several..

  • Keeping original photo after edit it?

I have the iphone 5c.  When I edit a photo using the photos app, like cropping it, the original photo disappears and only the edited photo is still there.  Sometimes though I want to keep the original along with the cropped photo.  I have the same problem when I use iphoto.  Is there any way to keep the original photo as well as the edited one?

    Edward,
I believe to prevent the renaming of your original files you'll need to go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>General and uncheck Keep iTunes Music folder organized.

  • Saving Photo File After Editing

Once I edit a raw image in Photoshop Elements 5.0 and then try to go back to the organizer from editor, the program requires about 4 clicks to save the file. If I'm editing multiple files, I must do each of these clicks for each of the files.
Does anyone know how to streamline this save process?

Hi All -- I'm going to ask this question again as the issue continues to vex me.
I'm now using LR 2.2. The changes flushed to a image file (I use DNG) reflect the current 'before settings' in the develop module. In order to get recent develop module changes into the image file, one has to first execute "Copy After's Settings to Before", then save the image settings (cmd-S). That seems totally reasonable.
Here's my problem. I visit lots of images making edits. I don't always remember to "Copy After's Settings to Before" after making edits. In order to determine which image's I've made changes to I step through all my images in the develop module using the before/after view, executing "Copy After's Settings to Before". This is a big hassle. I need a better approach. First I don't always know which images I've edited and I usually don't care anyway. What I want is a macro that will perform "Copy After's Settings to Before" for multiple images. Is there such a feature or is this missing from LR?

  • Nik Software .tif not saved along side of original photo in LR5

I will try to be brief.  I use LR 5 and the NIK software collection as a plug-in.  Ever since I've been using NIK, the .tif photo is saved right along side with the original photo.  However, recently LR 5 crashed on me a couple of times and I noticed one of my major keywords was missing from the keyword list.  I did what the LR tech support folks recommended and that was to go back to a backed up catalog that had the major keyword in it and use the backeup up catalog.  I copied my last saved LR Catalog from the end of November 2013.  Since then I took photos on 16, 17, 18, and 19th of December 2013.  So, when I used the last none good catalog of Nov 2013 these four sets of photos from December did not show up.  So, I used the import function in LR5 with "Add" and found the photos on my hard disk.  LR5 added them to the catalog.  Great.  Prior to all this, when I used NIK software, the .tif file was saved right next to the original photo.  That does not happen to any of the photos in these for folders from December.  The NIK .tif photo is saved next to the oringal for any photo previously shot prior to Decembers photos. Any photo I shot on 16-19 Dec after I added them back to the catalog, the .tif is saved at the end of the add sequence and not along side with the original.  I'm guessing it has something to do with adding these back to the catalog.  I have not taken any new photos since 19 Dec 2013 and used my CF reader to have LR "Copy" them to my photo location on the hard drive so I have not tested out what happens going forward.  Adobe support recommended I remove these four sets of photos from my LR catalog and import them back into the catalog with the "Add" feature.  I wanted to see if anyone out there has any suggestions on what is happening and how to fix it before I try the Adobe suggestion.  Like I said, it only happens on these four folders of photos that I added back to the catalog after using one of my last good backed up catalog to recover from the crash.  Thanks for anyone that can help.

Currently, my Sort Order is "Added Order".  The photos in LR5 grid view show in the order I took the photo which is what I want.  If I uncheck the "Stack with Original" box in the External Editing Tab in LR5 Preferences and edit a photo with one of the NIK products, the .tif photo goes to the end of the sequence and not put next to the original photo.  With the "Stack with Original" box checked and I go to edit in one of the NIK products, it moves the original photo in the grid view to the last in the sequence and adds the .tif photo next to it.  I never had this issue until LR5 crashed on me.

    Thanks for your reply
    I solved my problem,
Definitely a bug in syncing through itunes.
    - Connect Iphone with MacBook Pro through USB
    - Go to iphone on itunes, photos, deselect photo synchronization.
    - Sync (all pics will be removed from iphone)
    - Close itunes, iphoto, disconnect iphone
    - Select in finder: (home)-pictures-iphoto library.
    - Sec click on iphoto library and choose "show package contents"
    - Delete iPod Photo Cache
    - Close finder
    - Empty trash
    - Reconnect iphone
    - Allow photo synchronization again and everything works smooth.
After this, changes made in iphoto are instantaneously reflected in iphone photos.
Once every hundred photos, one gets detached from iphoto and then changes are no longer reflected (buggy) :-(
In this case I erase the photo in iphoto, sync, go back to iphoto trash, reestablish the photo from the trash and sync again.
Hope this improves. Still have to try cloud though.
    Thanks

  • Saving after Editing in Photoshop CS6

I have iPhoto 11 set so that all of my editing occurs in Photoshop CS6. Photos open in camera raw, I can make further edits in PS, etc. But a problem arrises when it is time to save the changes. I use the "Save" function and not "Save As". At this point the dialogue box defaults to save the .psd file. I have changed this to .jpeg. Then, when I hit save and closed PS, the edits do not appear in iPhoto. So, I tried again and didn't change the file type. Again, no edits appearing in iPhoto. I do, however, find the newly saved jpeg and .psd files in my library subdirectory (from where I've then dragged them to the desktop and then re-imported them into iPhoto).
What I've discvored, when looking at the directory to where PS is attempting to save, is that I'm working with a .CR2 file out of iPhoto. I realize this is a camera raw formatted file. So, I then attempted to save the edited file with this same name/naming convention, but PS won't allow me to do that. There is a "Photoshop Raw" file option, but nothing that says ".CR2"
So, my question is, what's the workflow solution with iPhoto 11 and Photoshop CS6 so that, when saving, my photos will appear as edited in iPhoto and retain the option to revert to the original file without having to save duplicates, etc. to the desktop and re-importing? For the record, I was always able to do this, simply, with previous versions of iPhoto and CS4. But, now that I've upgraded to both iPhoto 11 and CS6, I'm having this problem.

    Correct. Especially since iPhoto 11
iPhoto and Aperture (and Lightroom) work in much the same way. The image is never touched. When you process it your decisions are saved in the database and applied to the image as you view it live.
The thumbnail is updated. There is no "modified" file in iPhoto 11. There is a Preview - a shortcut to save you exporting for many common uses - email, uploading etc.
Raw shots present a problem. For  start, they're not really a file, just a dump of (almost) all the data from the camera sensor. If you shoot Jpeg the camera takes this data and processes it (i.e. makes editorial decisions) and saves the images as a Jpeg.
If you shoot Raw its because you want to make those editorial decisions yourself. You think that you can get better results, or ones that you prefer, by performing the same process on your computer.
So you import the Raw data to your computer and start making editorial decisions.
If you're using iPhoto (or Aperture or Lightroom) those decisions are recorded in the application's database. Want to view the Photo? Then iPhoto will show you the Raw plus your decisons. That's why it's lossless. Change your mind about something, all that's changing is the entry in the database. The original image is untouched.
Next problem... you can't do anything with a Raw. Can't print it, upload it, share it in edited form etc. To do any of these things you must have a version in the common image formats: Jpeg, Tiff etc
So, now you have a Raw, and a version that is made from that Raw.
Strictly speaking, to get that version you have to export - Basically, save this edited Raw as... something.
iPhoto (and Aperture) have a handy shortcut for this - Previews. It's a "good-enough-for-most-things" version. It saves you having to tediously export every single photo of your girlfriend's mother's cat. You can just email her the Preview.
And if you change your decisions about the Raw: the entry in the database changes and the Preview is destroyed and a new one created automatically, reflecting the new version of the shot.
(And note too: this is the case with Jpegs as well. And every version of iPhoto since iPhoto08 has used the Modified version in the same way. The modified version doesn't exist at all in iPhoto 11)
And the difference between iPhoto and Aperture or Lightroom - just more fine control over the process.
So, yes, iPhoto 11 performs true lossless editing.
