Original vs. Library

Sorry for such a novice question here.
I have been struggling to maintain some sort of organization and methodology with my usage of iPhoto. I have been using iPhoto and iMovie (and final cut) for my business and my process has not been without problems mainly from lack of experience on how iPhoto stores it's data.
Here is a breakdown of how things work from my perspective:
If I scan photos for customers and clean them up in Photoshop prior to my editing in iMovie I end up with a folder on my desktop that contains all of the customer's photos (which I now have way too many of these folders) I then import these into iPhoto and create my folder/smartfolder for that customer so that I can import them into iMovie.
-or-
If the customer gives me all of their photos on a CD I copy the photos into a folder on the desktop and repeat the above process.
So now, in my mind, I am left with triple redundancy and have taken up unnecessary space (which I desperatly need now - I have a 500gb and 400gb internal and a 500gb external, all are down to their last 50-100gb free.)
My question is can I remove all of the folders on my desktop since they have already been imported into iPhoto or will that remove some sort of alias link that will render these photos unusable in the iLife suite (I need to keep backups of all of my projects incase previous customers need further changes or to use these same photos/video clips in a different project down the road.)
Or should I delete everything from the iPhoto library (since I have the original copies in folders and many are copied into the iMovie project as well.)
Sorry for the long post.
Any suggestions on how to better manage this beast will greatly help me reclaim some much needed space.

If you've selected the checkbox in iPhoto's Advanced preference section to copy the files into the library folder system when importing then you will have a copy of your files in the iPhoto Library/Originals folder and subfolders. That option is normally the default. So if you confirm that you have full sized files in the Originals folder and copy option is selected you can safely delete those from the boot drive. But do keep a backup copy on another HD or other media.
There is a way to have your "source" original files on an external HD and have an alias based library on your boot drive. I have 17,600 source files on an external HD which are 27G in size. My alias library on my boot drive is only 1.6G in size.
Apart from the obvious space saving benefits there are some caveats to the system.
1 - when the external HD with the source files is not mounted, i.e. when the laptop is on the road, only the thumbnail files will be viewable. Any edited files will be viewable in their full form as the modified file is kept in the iPhoto library on the boot drive.
2 - any function of iPhoto requiring the full sized file will not be available until the source files are available.
3 - you can add keywords (thur the Info pane in iPhoto) create new albums (but not move photos to them) and add comments.
4 - if a file is deleted from the library the source file does not get deleted. That must be done manually via the Finder.
Tutoria #2 describes how you might go about converting over to such a system.
As a professional photographer you might consider iView MediaPro as your primary asset management application. I use it as my primary application in conjunction with iPhoto on the same set of source files. iView for management, editing, etc. and iPhoto for books, calendars, etc.
Hope this has been of some help.

Have you copied your content over from your old computer and onto the new on ? If not, and you still have your old computer, then there a number of methods described on this page which you can use to copy your library over : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 . If you no longer have your old computer then have you got a backup of your content that you can copy onto the new computer and add into iTunes ?

",the owner sold the ipod without clearing the songs and since the songs were not puchased from the itunes store then i believe i now own the songs"
    Not true at all.
It does not matter where the songs came from, they are not yours and the previous owner does not own the right to distribute them to others.
The law is the same with downloads and cds and any other medium.

I have had my ipod touch 4th generation for a couple months now.... Nowhere in the manuals or help sections does it tell me how to make individual pucture files(like that already on my computer) put onto my ipod touch.... I managed to make one and I can't remember how I did it but when I have the touch hooked up to itunes and try to pick which picture files from my computer to sync, a box always opens and says that it will delete everything in the original photo library that was in there.....
Can anyone help me there has to be away, I know someone has done it but they don't live here to show me!!!!

  • How do I find original music library?

Okay so we have a few macs in the house and we can't seem to find the original itunes library for my husband on any device? We are upgrading computer and we don't want to lose any of his music, however whenever we go to itunes on all of our other devised it displays all of his library under shared...Is there anyway to locate where it is being shared from? Or can we copy the library even though it's shared?

    Backup drive?
    Subscribe to iTunes Match?
If neither of the above and you don't have the CD and can't find your tracks on the computer then they you're stuck.  A file recovery utility will cost $100, plus another $100 for an external drive to which to resue the files, and may not even work.  You can buy a lot of CDs for $200.

  • Syncing to itunes from a new computer without having original itunes library

Hi there i am stuck in a tricky situation and would appreciate all the help i can get, first things first i know this is quite a frequently asked question as i have done a bit of searching on the net about it however could not not find anything that totaly matches my problem, i have recently purchased a brand new laptop which runs windows 7 compared to my old desktop which ran XP, i have tried syncing all of my iphone 4s contents onto my new laptop's itunes library including everything not just music or videos and i got the infamous pop up "The iphone is synced with another Itunes library. Do you want to erase this iphone and sync with this Itunes library" the problem is that my original itunes library does not exist no more as my desktop was completly wiped and had XP redownloaded onto it again because it had a virus, which also wiped all of my hard drive so i cant even get everything i backed up off of my phone from it, i have managed to sign in to the itunes store and allowed my laptop to work with itunes, i have also transferred my purchases from my phone to my new itunes library but this only includes my apps and obviously not my contacts and photos and everything, i still get the pop up if i go to sync my apps from my library anyway, is there any way i can delete my original itunes library without it even existing anymore so that i can just start afresh and sync everything i have on my phone now directly to my new itunes library? or do i need to purchase this iphone rip/backup/store software that everyone goes on about or something? to be honest its really annoying my now as i just want to be able to sync everything like how i used to, someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me i would be so greatfull for any good sollutions to this problem, thankyou

i also forgot to right that i really dont want to loose anything from my phone during this process, thanks

    Thank you Mario.
I am currently downloading my CD on my computer and saving them to my phone - AGAIN.
Your help I am sure was great but I am not good at this. The lingo confuses me. I need to find a pal, with an iPhone who knows what they are doing. Someone like you to talk me through this but you don't know my computer.....
Anyway, thanks for your help. You were the only one to reply and that meant a lot.

  • Original Photo Library Totally Gone!?!?!

    Hello,
I seem to have "synced" a sample photo from my computer desktop to my iphone (via iTunes). In doing so, it seems that all of the original Photo Library Images (factory installed) are completely gone. It would be nice to recover these somehow? Please... anyone, help?

I have the same problem and the only three people I know that have the new iphone has the same problem also and we all want our sample photos back too. I was thinking that if you could find someone that has the origional photos in their iphone they could email them to you then you could copie them into your iphone.

  • Downsizing original Iphoto library

I wanted to downsize (segment) my 96Gb Iphoto library to smaller libraries by year.
What is the recommended method of doing this?
    I've already tried this:
Copied original 96Gb to another location, renamed as "2006" , opened in Iphoto, using hold option button when opening Iphoto, and proceeded to delete all images not related to 2006.
I also did the same for years 2004, and 2005, and 2007.
What I've noticed is that the library size is still very big (around 50Gb, even though the content is much smaller , (like 10Gb).
Digging around in Finder , I examined the package contents to find that for every new library I created, it had remnants of other years in them.
So I deleted anything in the package contents not applicable to that year.
*I know, I know , everyone says dont mess with the package contents.
Anyways, this did reduce my library file size to a more reasonable figure. (factoring in thumbnail pics etc..)
But on one year , 2005, I get an occasional error message to check the disk space for the library. *I have plenty of space.
Other years seem to be fine, but I still am holding onto my original multiyear library, which works without error, but is just too **** huge.
Any ideas on a different approach , short of starting libraries from scratch?
    Thanks

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't find original iTunes library...

I have two iPods (both Nanos - one 6th generation and one 1st generation) and recently used method three on this page (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495) to create a second iTunes library for my second device. I followed directions to a tee and now can only find the new library. Any advice? Like many of you, I'm sure, my original iTunes library contains tons of paid-for downloaded songs which I would hate to lose. I wish I were more tech-savvy!!! Help!

How did you save this file? iTunes doesn't actually have a save file feature so I am not sure what you did.

  • Can I restore all my original itunes library configuration from a back up?

Can I restore all my original itunes library & playlists' configuration from a back up?
hi...has anyone out there had this happen/done this?
    1. I just got a new PC as my old one finally fried on me.
    2. I installed the latest iTunes again on the new PC and
    3. I have all my itunes songs and the itunes library file backed up and I restored those files to their original locations (these exactly match the same locations on my new PC).
Problem: my original itunes library shows up fine in itunes, but none of the songs can be found when I try to play any of them - 'the original file could not be found' is the error message that comes up.
I have about 5,000 tracks, with many organized into playlists, and I don't want to have to start from scratch organizing this huge library again. I thought backups and the ability to restore files prevents problems like these.
If anyone has a workaround or fix, I would love to hear about it. Thanks.

  • I keep getting exclamation marks on my playlist on itunes, but this is only for the songs downloaded on my phone. I can't play any songs on my phone, only on the original itunes library. Whats going on??

but this is only for the songs downloaded on my phone. I can't play any songs on my phone, only on the original itunes library. Whats going on??

The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not inlcuded synced media like apps and music. Thes those iTunes are not restored to the iPod unless they are in the iTunes library.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • HT4527 cannot access original itunes library. PC back to factory default settings

I'm using the same Toshiba laptop which has been returned (following a fault), to factory settings. I cannot get access via itunes, to my original music library when either ipod or ipad are connected.
I have an iPod Touch 4th gen and Apple iPad version 3.
The iPad has my original music library and videos on it. My ipod only has purchased music as now shown on the curreny itunes library.
How do re-trieve the original library?
    Alan (UK)

As far as the iPod know your restored computer is a new computer/new library.  If everything that is on your iPod is in the library on your restored computer let iTunes erase you iPod and replace its contents with what is now in your iTunes library.  If you have the iPod backup from your pre-restored iPod, you can restore your iPod from that backup to get your app data and other things back.  See the following fro the location of the backup file and what is in the backup.

  • Original iPhoto library wont open

    iPhoto.app version: 9.5.1
    OSX Version: 10.9.4
In my Pictures folder I have:
    - iPhoto Library
    - iPhoto Library 2
    * iPhoto Library (original) is huge, 461.19 GB
    * iPhoto Library 2 is empty, which is okay as I created it trying to fix the issue of iPhoto Library (original) not opening.
    What the problem is:
    - iPhoto Library (original) doesn't open
    Here is what I've tried:
    - Creating a new iPhoto Library 2
    Here is an additional issue
    - Since I've created the iPhoto Library 2, iPhoto Library (original) does not display as an option to select if I open iPhoto.app and hold down the option button.
So I can't select the iPhoto Library to while holding down the option and command buttons, this only brings up the repair menu for iPhoto Library 2.
Iv'e tried to select the iPhoto Library (original) by opening iPhoto.app and holding down the option button, then selecting the Other Library button, finding the iPhoto Library (original) and then selecting it (BTW that's how I know what size it is). I can select it, but clicking the Open button does nothing.
NOTE: I'm a software engineer and have no problem using the command line, I'm thinking this is a permission issue or a database issue it just needs to be reindexed.
Question: I know from the command line I can reindex application data such as the mail.app, can I also do this with the iPhoto.app?
    Any other suggestions?

to get the first aid option Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

  • Lost ability to view edited images alongside original in library

    Hi
Not sure what I have done but I am using lightroom 1.4. Previously, any pictures I edited would show as an edited file in the library now all that happens is the original image shows as the edited image. Does that make sense?

You mean LR 4.1, not 1.4?
Maybe your edits are now stacked with their originals?
In Library module, use menu Photo - Stacking - Expand all stacks.
Sometimes I dod not find my edits right along the originals, because I had set the sort order to "edit time" rather than "capture time", so I found them as last thumbnails. This explanation could only apply to you if you had put the sequence from z-to-a as well, because otherwise you would only see the originals, not the editied ones.

  • I cannot open my original iPhoto library. I go to file - switch library - choose - click open----- doesn't open

Somehow, during my last import of photos from my iPhone, a second library was created. Now I can't open the original one even though it looks like it should open.

What version of iPhoto. Version 9.5.1 (902.17)
    - What version of the Operating System. 10.9.5
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
When I try to switch to another library and click open, the blue "open"icon dims and gets brighter but doesn't open.
    - History: Is this going on long? started a week or so ago. I was asked to start another library and said yes but now the original one is not viewable. Has anything been installed or deleted? No - Are there error messages? No
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue. Switching to library - library I want is ghosted out.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? No Or how you use iPhoto? No
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
    Thanks for your help
