Original White Balance info

Hi,
Is there a place in Lightroom where it is possible to see what was the Original White Balance settings from the camera?
regards,
Danny

Ok but is there a place where it specify it the way it is on the camera like :
Auto
Daylight
Shade
Cloudy
Tungsten
White fluorescent
Flash
Custom
or I have to open the files in EXIF tool?

Danny

  • Why is there no white balance info in 3.3.1?

I want to transfer my iPhoto library over to Aperture, but am reluctant to do so until I have familiarised myself with the new program. (I have over 23,000 photos in iPhoto!)
As a start, I have imported a few of my recent photos from iPhoto so that I can find my way around Aperture. One thing puzzles me. I can see the white balance information for each photo in iPhoto but the white balance field is greyed out in the Aperture metadata, and there is no 'cloud' or 'sun' picture at the top right of the Info panel, even though the white balance field is ticked in the Metadata Fields panels for Exif Info and Camera Info. I really need to know which camera setting I used for each photo to help me learn how to take better photos, but as far as I can see the information is not available to me anywhere in Aperture.
I have performed Aperture Library First Aid (repaired permissions and database, and rebuilt database) but the problem still exists. I can't find anything anywhere on the internet or in Apple Support that mentions this problem. Does anyone have any ideas for me please?

Sorry, I see you are referring to the Info and not the Adjustment.
Since I am seeing both in each program, I am not sure which may be the culprit.
You could try launching Aperture while depressing the 'Option' key and creating a new test library (Create New.. button). Then export some original files from iPhoto to say the desktop > import into the Aperture test library to see if the information shows up.
If you now see the info, then there may be something going on with iPhoto that is preventing the transfer. If this is the case, you might try the iPhoto discussions since the usual helpers would know more than I about fixing a potential iPhoto library issue.
Otherwise, wait for someone more knowledgable than I to help here as I am not sure what would cause that if iPhoto isn't (and since you have already used the Aperture First Aid).

  • Does metadata show jpeg white balance info?

This whole metadata thing has me confused.
I can't see the WB info in metadata unless i save the RAW file as a jpeg.
If i take the pic AS a jpeg, all the WB metadata ever says is AUTO, even though i set it to deifferent light sources.
Am I doing something wrong? And is there a way to see the ACTUAL setting I used on the WB for jpeg files OR a RAW file WITHOUT having to save it as a jpeg?
    Thanks, people!

Robert -- my in-camera WB setting shows correctly in the metadata (e.g.: Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy Weather, etc.).  I use a Sony a850.
It sounds as though either your Nikon codes the WB in a proprietary field (every mfr. creates their own RAW file format), or Aperture is not properly reading the EXIF.  You could read the EXIF yourself to see whether Nikon puts the WB in the expected field.
Perhaps someone with Nikon experience can join in.  I'm sorry to report that I have none.
Fwiw, I always shoot RAW and AWB and make corrections are needed in Aperture.  Since I make only RAW captures and use an OVF, I have no use for the in-camera WB settings.

  • Canon EOS 550D JPEGs don't show white balance EXIF info in Aperture

I have 23,000 photos in my iPhoto library which I would eventually like to transfer to Aperture. I've experimented with importing just a few photos from iPhoto so that I can practise using Aperture before I go over to it completely, but have a problem in that the white balance info for JPEGs is not copying over with the rest of the metadata. The white balance column in the Info pane is empty and there are no 'cloud' or 'sun' symbols at the top right of the Info pane beside the word JPEG. The white balance info for RAW photos, however, copies over fine.
I have performed Aperture Library First Aid (repaired permissions and database, and rebuilt database) but the problem still exists. I have also created a new Aperture library and then imported some original photos from iPhoto which I exported to the desktop and then into the new Aperture library. I had the same problem, with no white balance information showing.
This question is being re-posted in a slightly different form from a similar one I asked yesterday, because it has been suggested to me that it may be a problem peculiar to Canon EOS 550D users. Has any other Canon EOS 550D user come across this problem, or can anyone suggest a remedy please? I am using the latest versions of Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11.

    Hello Ernie
I think you've pinpointed the nub of the problem. As I was only trying out Aperture, I thought the best thing to do would be to import just a few photos from iPhoto and have a play, so I went to the Import button in the Toolbar and imported them from my iPhoto library individually. After reading your advice I have just changed libraries and opened the iPhoto library in Aperture and the white balance information is now showing. I can't really see what the difference is between the two, I would have thought the white balance information would show whichever way I looked at the photos but I don't care, because you have solved it for me. Thank you so much for your time. So many people have tried to help me and I'm most grateful to the Apple Support community!

  • No White Balance In Metadata Tab for RAW files

Hi - when I open my images in Bridge, I cannot see any White Balance info in the metadata tab for my RAW files despite it being checked in the metadata preferences tab (under both Camera Data EXIF and Camera Raw). In fact the metadata tab doesn't show up at all for Camera Raw info. It is very frustrating especially when I am comparing images taken using customs white balance, and ones taken using the automated WB settings. I am using CS3. Any advice on how to solve this mystery? Thanks

Could you be more specific about what system you have and what version of Bridge and Camera Raw plug in you are using?
Have you checked the Bridge menu: window and see if a checkmark is placed in front of the metadata panel?
Also if only the tab for the metadata panel is visible the only option to view the data itself is to drag the panel up or down to resize it and makes the data visible.

  • Transfering white balance from one image to many images.

I'm starting to shoot with a gray card to get better color representation in my portraits... I typically shoot RAW.  I've read that you can save the white balance info from one image ( in a DNG file?) and transfer it to other images that are either JPEG or RAW ( as long as the initial image is a RAW). Anyone know how to both save the info, then transfer it?

It doesn't directly address your question, but another way - sometimes useful for a group of modestly sized set of photos taken in the same light - is to open them all in Camera Raw (e.g., by opening them all in Photoshop), then using the Select All function and adjusting the white balance settings (or choosing a preset).  When done, press Done, and those settings will be saved for each of the images.

  • White balance information from camera lost?

I don't know what's up with Lightroom and reading the white balance data stored in the .nef files from my camera. Quite frankly it seems that Lightroom eighter has some "interpretation" of Nikon's colors, or that it simply disregard all white balance info.
Is this problem .nef (Nikon)-specific, or does this whitebalance/color-interpretation problem appear with all raw formats?
    //Svein

I calibrate against a CBL. As for "how far off", that depends on what calibration I've gotten, but it seems that Lightroom has a predefined "as shot" that is nowhere near the calibration done in-cam. I have verified this against what NX and Bibble gets, and for direct 60degree-north sunlight, Lightroom's interpretation is visibly blue-ish.

  • Custom White Balance

    Hi
I often shoot using 'custom white balances' in raw on my canon 5d. Please can someone explain what aperture does with the custom white balance info - is it applied to the raw image when the image is imported?
Other Raw processors allow you to specifically to select whether to use the custom WB or a preset but I can find this option in Aperture
    Help please
    thanks
    Steve

"When you open a RAW file in Aperture, The first thing it does is calculate the color of every Pixel in your image. It uses the temperature and tint settings that you ( or your camera) as image Metadata to calibrate its settings for the color of the loght you were shooting under. When you change these settings, you do nothing more than changing the calibration reference Apoerture uses for its calculations."

  • Problem transferring white balance Exif info from iPhoto to Aperture

I originally posted this question on the Aperture discussions page, but it was suggested to me that maybe I should try asking it on the iPhoto page as well.
I want to transfer my iPhoto library over to Aperture, but am reluctant to do so until I have familiarised myself with the new program. (I have over 23,000 photos in iPhoto.)
As a start, I have imported a few of my recent photos from iPhoto so that I can find my way around Aperture. One thing puzzles me. I have performed Aperture Library First Aid (repaired permissions and database, and rebuilt database) but the problem still exists. At the suggestion of someone on the Aperture page I have also created a new Aperture library and then imported some original photos from iPhoto which I exported to the desktop and then into the new Aperture library. I had the same problem, with no white balance information showing. That's when I was advised to try the iPhoto discussions page as well!
Does anyone have any ideas for me please?

Well, Terence, it duly showed up the white balance data when I shot a Raw photo. But I don't understand why Aperture recognises white balance for Raw but won't show it for Jpegs, whereas iPhoto recognises both.

  • ?? Info readings for white balance in Raw Bridge ??

I'm running CS2 9.0.2 on a G5 iMac and I'm having an annoying but intermittent problem with the information palette shown in the top right hand corner of the Camera Raw window when you open Raws in Bridge. Often when I try to do a white balance, if I'm just trying to roll the pointer over the gray scale to get readings, the info numbers will flash quickly instead of maintaining and updating as you move the mouse.
The values are not blown out or underexposed but you simply cannot read the values in the palette. You have to click on your medium gray, etc... before you can read the numbers on the palette.
Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks.

See the response to my message from Jeff Schewe under the topic "ACR 4: RGB measurement values show --- instead of values." Opening from Photoshop (instead of Bridge) seems to fix the problem (at least for me). You might try that. It's not as convenient as opening from Bridge, but the info then displays correctly in ACR.

  • Can Bridge report in-camera settings for White Balance?

No matter what settings I choose in Bridge Preferences, I cannot get it to tell me what was the White Balance (WB) setting of the camera when raw images were shot.
This seems an odd omission because Camera Raw is passed this information and displays images correctly, although it doesn't report what WB value it was given, only that what you are viewing, prior to any editing, is the default "As Shot".
I'm referring to raw files shot on my Canon 300D, Nikon D700 and Canon 5D Mark II.
Currently I'm using PsCS6 (13.0.1.2 x64), Bridge CS6 (5.0.2.4 x64) and ACR 8.1 on a Windows 7 x64 8GB system, but the same omission existed on the same Windows system with ACR 7.x in CS6 and all releases of PsCS5, Bridge CS5 and ACR 6.6 and 6.7.
On the opening dialog of Bridge Preferences, at the bottom you can choose whether or not you wish to 'Hide Empty Fields'. Selecting or unselecting this option does not have any effect upon Bridge's inability to report WB when, from within Bridge, you select File Info from the File menu or by hitting Ctrl + I.
The only locations in Bridge Preferences I can find that need selection (and which I have selected) for Bridge to supply WB information upon invoking File Info are here:
    Preferences\Metadata\Camera Data (Exif)\White Balance; and
    Preferences\Metadata\Camera Raw\White Balance
I have also selected Preferences\Metadata\File Properties\Supports XMP, and yet Bridge fails to give the in-camera WB in the Camera Data tab of File Info.
I have been able to locate references to WB in the following tabs of File Info:
File Info\Advanced, where there appears, under the sub-tab 'Exif Properties (http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0)', an entry such as 'exif:White Balance:1'; and
    File Info\Raw Data an entry such as '<exif:White Balance >1< /exif:White Balance>'.
However, these are just code numbers, not names like 'Cloudy' or 'Shade', and they are not only inconsistent (both showing the code 1 for an unedited image I know was shot with Auto WB and another unedited image I know was shot with Flash WB) but also it would appear that the codes may refer to the WB as modified by ACR - because an image I know had its in-camera WB of Auto altered in ACR shows a code of 'Custom' rather than 0, 1 or some other number.
So what am I missing? Does anyone know how to make Bridge Preferences display the in-camera setting for WB, and if so, under which tab of File Info do you look for the answer once you have set up Preferences properly?

Just corrected my current Photoshop version

I'm afraid that you just haven't addressed the question that I asked in my original post.
I still like to think I have but if you for whatever reason need this info showing in the metadata you probably be better of trying to alter it your self or find a way to address Paul personally (maybe via a private message).
I have not heard from him for a long time and a small google search provided me with this forum post, hope it helps you, maybe you can also persuaded Paul to come back, he is very missed!

  • Batch White Balance using a reference pixel?

    Hi,
I have shot a time lapse image sequence that includes change from day to night & vice versa. The automatic white balance produces unsatisfying results.
Since it's always the same scene, what I would like to do is this: Select one pixel in one of the images and have Lightroom (3.3) use this pixel on each of the images as a reference for white balancing them.
    Is this possible?
A solution for Camera Raw or Photoshop (CS5) would also be okay.
    Thanks a lot!
    Mike

    Hi clvrmnky,
    hi BDLImagery,
    thanks for your replies.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The dropper will use an average from that selection to choose a neurtal, shifting all colours to match that new neutral. I suspect this is not what you want.
I do have some snow in foreground which imho makes a nice reference for white balancing since I don't want the snow to be blue, pink or whatever I've got at the moment. Same goes for the clouds. So my idea is to use each pic's snow at the same pixel position for white balancing.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Only way I can think of is to create an Action in Photoshop, tie this action with the Lightroom export function and check the "add to this catalog" in the Export window to import the modified photo back in the catalog.
Thought of something like that, too, but the problem is that applying a white balance after import (which this would be) would already work on corrupted data by the previous in-app (camera raw or lightroom) white balance. I tried it on a pic that comes out of the default white balance as completely blue, and you cant rescue that after import to photoshop since by then the original info is lost.
I think I'll now go something like this:
Select all ~5000 images in camera raw, perform white balance on the first one & propagate to the others, then browse forwards to the first one that does not work with these settings, select from that one to the end & do white-balace on those & repeat until done. And to avoid sharp cut-overs do some more or less smooth transitions on the surrounding images.
    Kind regards
    Mike

  • Nikon D2X - DNG vs NEF White Balance Mismatch

Folks, I was hoping someone might be able to help me with a frustrating White Balance issue. Specifically, I have found that my photos often have very different White Balance values -- for both Color Temperature as well as Tint -- when comparing the original NEF and a DNG created by Adobe DNG Converter. (And the images' appearance is reflected by the difference.) If I proceed to correct the White Balance values in the DNG, so that they exactly match the NEF, the images are identical.
You might ask, "Why do you want to convert your images to DNG?" The key reason is that DNG provides lossless compression, which makes a HUGE difference on storage requirements. (Unfortunately, Nikon's RAW compression is lossy, and I cannot afford any image quality degradation -- no matter how slight.)
As far as pertinent info: Camera: Nikon D2X. Platform: Mac OS X 10.4.8, with all updates installed (including the Camera RAW update released a month or so ago). Hardware: MacBook Pro 17" 2.16 (CoreDuo) and PowerMac G5 2.7. Software: Lightroom 1.0 and Adobe DNG Converter 3.7. (DNG Converter 3.6 provides same results.)
In terms of the NEFs, they are uncompressed. (I also took a couple of test shots with compressed NEF, but the results are the same.) In terms of color settings on my camera: Color Mode II, Color Space AdobeRGB. (I know these things theoretically have no impact on RAW files, but I thought I should mention it anyway.)
When searching the Adobe forums, the only directly-comparable issue I found was related to Sony's Alpha camera, using a much older version of the DNG Converter. However, this issue was corrected in later versions. URL of message thread: http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bbf7680/7
Has anyone else encountered an issue like this? And please tell me that what I am experiencing is not a "feature" of either Lightroom and/or DNG? :-P

Even the professionals are divided on this one, which is why I provided the link I did. It actually supports your statement.
However, my _only_ point was that converting your lossy compressed NEF format photos to DNG will not recover those bits. They are gone forever as a result of the in-camera processing.
Different post-production workflow issues are a completely different thing, and a good reason to switch to DNG (along with the arguments for long-term archival storage).
You did state that your key reason for going to DNG was to take advantage of lossless compression. Ok, but you are taking a lossy compressed original (probably, but this depends on your camera) and converting it to a new format. Regardless of whether that new format is losslessly compressed or not, the original is missing that information. Again, converting to DNG will not recover those bits.
Unless, of course, you have a camera that offers lossless NEFs, in which case conversion and compression might save you quite a bit, as long as you did not save the original NEF inside the DNG.
If you, like me, are stuck with a Nikon that only makes compressed NEFs, then you are stuck accepting lossy compressed NEFs -- NEFs that are quantized in-camera.

  • "as shot" white balance display

*Where* do I find the "as shot" white balance for a photo I've already developed? I have Googled and searched the menus for 30 minutes, nothing! (not to mention, to mention, I've tried to post here 3 times, and had my message erased almost every time.)

and I guess, just undo after changing to As Shot, or is there someway more elegant?
I don't completly understand that... Do you mean that you just want to quickly review what the WB in your camera was for the photo, but you want to retain the custom WB setting that you made during developmen? If that is the case, yes, undo afterwards seems to be the best thing to do. If I remember correctly, there is no place in the metadata panel where one can view the original WB information (I don't have LR at my disposal at present).
The same should be true for the flash info, but I am not 100% sure about that right now. Look for it in the metadata panel switched to "EXIF". If an information is not there, it is probably not available in LR elsewhere (except perhaps via a plugin).
Note: The WB values (temp, tint) of "As Shot" do not necessarily equal those displayed by the camera of by the camera maker's software. Actual WB values heavily depend on the raw processing and camera profiles used, and because Adobe/ACR uses different ones compared to the camera maker, there may be substantial differences. I think there was a thread somewhere here in the forum about that...

  • White Balance Metadata not showing in Adobe Bridge CS6

Hi there, I am running Bridge CS6 on a Mac, and use Canon 5D and 5DMark 111 cameras. I have an issue with Bridge which I can not seem to figure out. Whether I shoot Raw or JPG and I am trying to do some testing for white balance, once I open the images in Bridge, in the little icon panel just below the folders/favourites panel etc I can see the f stop info, speed, metering , ISO etc, but the only icons I get for WB are if use auto - then I see AUTO.  But when I do a manual WB like 'cloudy', 'tungsten', or 'shade' etc all I get are the symbols for 'Custom" or "Manual".  How do I get the actual symbols for what type of WB i've chosen to show up?
I have purged the Cache - both in the individual folder and the overall Cache in preferences.  I have checked that all the boxes are ticked in the preferences panel for the Metadata.  So not sure what else to do.
    Cheers D

Ok thanks for that, at least I wont be chasing my tail.
I did install the DNG converter 8.3 but I still NEF files as a NEF icon. Any clues to what I may not be doing right there?
