Originals and Modified files suddenly changed to alias

I've just been doing business as usual. Last thing I did was import several photos last week. Today, I open up the library and find that the original files have all been magically changed to alias. I could work with them up to a point, could even open them in an external editor. But as I worked, I lost even that. I find that this corruption has moved back several events - but not through the whole library. I need to know why this is happening, and if there is some way to re-designate these as original files. The data is there - or was five minutes ago. My back-up, so responsibly done last week, is corrupted too, now. I can see the thumbnails, and as I said, could actually work with the data. For a while. This is really stupid. Why would the files suddenly be alias files? iPHoto 8 7.5.1

Ah. This explains everything. I cleaned out the downloads folders last week - gone, gone - so the alias points nowhere. And the pref you sent me to? The box was unchecked. Why, I couldn't tell you - I'm the only one who uses this machine, and I certainly didn't do it. But that's happened once in a while, a program suddenly deciding to revert to or change a pref without human help. Or I'm stupid, and did it in my sleep. But that should take care of it. I am sighing. Even if I could get my time machine to boot, it wouldn't help.
Such a simple answer. I want to compliment you, but don't know what to say. You know your business. And now I feel deeply foolish. I'll try importing again and see if it doesn't work now. Which it should. Will you accept a quick kiss on the cheek from an old lady?

  • Can't find Originals and Modified files in finder

Just upgraded to iPhoto 9 and find that the Original and Modified folders are missing. I can find them when I get file info from a photo in iphoto and they seem to be subfiles of the iphoto app. However in finder, they are not accessible. Am I missing something?

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder became a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There is never a need for the user to browse the Library via the Finder or any other app. Any time you do you risk damaging the Library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: faster and b: safer than rooting through the old Library folders.

  • Original and modified file folders in iPhoto

I just loaded photos into iPhoto and the files populated in both the Originals and Modified file folders in iPhoto.  None of these photos have been modified.  I'm concerned with conserving disk space on my Mac.  How do I keep this from happening moving forward?

Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". Because iPhoto integrate with other apps it automaticlly creates the modified version. Otherwise photos would turn up in your emails or word processing documents sideways, as these apps don't know nything about such tags.
If you then try to Revert to Original, iPhoto will remove the edited version. However, when it then looks at the Original file again, it sees the flag, and creates a new rotated version. This loop will run as long as you Revert to the Original. The solution is to either a: turn off the Auto-Rotate feature on your camera or b: rotate the photos prior to importing them to iPhoto.
Going forward: digitial photography take up lots of space. Don't be concerned about it. Buy a large external drive and put your iPhoto Library on it.

  • Moving originals and modified to another computer

I'm having an issue copying photos over from one mac to another. I made the mistake this weekend of importing photos from my camera to my work computer, and now I want them on my home mac.
I tried coping the folders in both the originals and modified and pasted to the home library, but they didn't show up when I launched iPhoto. Then I tried copying over the roll's data, and that didn't work.
I also tried renaming the roll's folders as the numbers were not out of sync.
Any thoughts? Isn't this all XML driven?

    Slapshot Scott
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
Remember, iPhoto is a database, data has to be imported. Simply putting it into a folder is not enough. This is further complicated by the fact that iPhoto will not import from the iPhoto Library Folder.
If you have edited and tagged etc, and don't want to lose this information, then use iPhoto Library Manager and merge the required elements of the two libraries. You can download iPLM from here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iphotolibrarymanager.html
Otherwise, simply put the files on the desktop and go file -> Import.

  • Iphoto data folder different than originals and modified

Some of the thumbnails in my Iphoto library have no picture file linked to them.
I played with some pictures which were brought onto my computer from a camera with the time poorly set up. In doing so, some of the pictures in the data folder cannot be found in Iphoto. They are all there when I search through the originals and modified folders. It seems I may be able to replace contents of the data folder with contents from the orig/mod folders, seeing as all of the data is on an external drive.
I routed Iphoto to use the backed up library as its source. All seems well, except for the folder issue. Is there and easy solution?

I moved a bunch of folders around to open up space on my meager 80g HD Macbook so I could up grade to SL and not risk loosing any data. I moved the iphoto library to the external HD. I may have updated a previous back up and not changed the Data folder in the process. I think I updated the original and modified folders only into the HD's previous iphoto backup. The only folders I moved out of the original Iphoto folder in "pictures" were the modified and original folders because they were the largest files. The data folder and all others remain unchanged.
Once SL was up and running smoothly, I opened Iphoto with the option button pressed and chose the program to read the pics from the Iphoto library on the external drive.
Interestinly, When I did the same thing with my Itunes library it took about 20 minutes to load the library, in contrast, Iphoto was instant. Like it was reading the data folder within the computers HD and searching for the picture in the external. Movie clips seem to not be working at all. They don't seem to open QT automatically, or even work when it's open.

  • IPhoto import brought originals and modified photos?

I am trying to migrate from iPhoto to Aperture. When I imported my iPhoto library and then browsed the Aperture package I found that it had brought over both my original iPhoto pictures and the modified ones. This created an unessesary 6 gig of lost space. Is there a way I can force it to only bring over only the modified ones or somehow delete those out? Thanks

Is there a solution to the problem?
    In a word, No.
The problem goes back to here:
I backed up my photos by saving the "Originals" and "Modified" folders to an external drive
When you did this you missed the key file that tracks the relationship between these elements of the iPhoto Library - the main database file. Once that’s gone there is no way to recreate the relationship between the Originals and Modified versions. The correct way to back up iPhoto is to back up the Library in it’s entirety. Frankly, unless you’re recovering from disaster there is never a need to enter the Library or to deal with it as anything other than a single entity.
When I manually copy the two folders into the iPhoto library directory it doesn't work either.
That’s right. Again, it’s back to the missing DB file. Simply having pics in a folder is not enough, they need to be imported.
Best bet? For me I would trash the modified and start over with the Originals.

  • Whenever I modify a photo in Iphoto it puts it in a "modified" subfolder. Why can't I move this modified file (I changed name) back to the Iphoto main file so I can see it when I open my photos?

Whenever I modify a photo in Iphoto it puts it in a "modified" subfolder. Why can't I move this modified file (I changed and saved file name) back to the Iphoto main file so I can see it when I open my photos?

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
If that does not cure it backup up your iPhoto library and rebuild it - depress the option and command keys and launch iphoto and use the options there - exact option depends on teh version you have
And always remember - NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto library - nothing - no deletions - no name changes - nothing

  • IPhoto duplicated photos showing Originals and Modified folders?

Upon importing photos to iPhoto, many folders were duplicated. One folder has "Originals" and the other folder has the numbers you see in the iPhoto folder system such as "18" and "21." I understand that when you import photos, it places a copy in the originals folder. I"m assuming this is used when you use the "Revert to Originals" function. Why is iPhoto showing both copies? How can I turn this off? I'm assuming I don't want to delete one of these. This is not simply duplicates were downloaded.
    thanks!

    PostPunk:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It sounds like you imported a library into a new library when you upgraded to iPhoto 8 rather than let iPhoto 8 convert the older library to the new version. That method will import both the modified version along with the original as originals. If this is not what happened please describe how you went about importing the photos, where they came from, etc.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Index and Paging file location change

    Gurus,
I wanted to change the location of the .ind and .pag files. Right now it is in the D drive in the default location. I would like to change it to a different drive. How could I achieve it.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    Yes you can do that.
Login to the essbase and go to the application -> database.
Right click on the database. Go to edit -> properties. A new window will open, go to the "Storage tab".
In the bottom side there is a details of index file and page file is given. You can set the location of the index file and page file over there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Grant an account rights to read and modify files in all Redirected Documents folders?

We have set up redirected Documents folder with the default recommended permissions that does not grant Administrators any access to the folders.  If an administrator needs access to a folder, they take ownership of the folder, grants themselves permissions
and does whatever they need to do with the folder such as delete it or give access to a new person.  This is rarely needed so it is not a big deal.
However,  we  now need to import everyone's Outlook PSTs (stored in their redirected MyDoc's so they are backed up) into their new  Exchange Archive mailboxes.  We will also need to be able to verify all PSTs are gone from the file server
once the contents are imported into their archive mailbox.  We also need to be able to run reports showing which users are storing music and video files in their folders and how much.
When I tried to run Windirstat against the share containing the redirected MyDocs folders to see what file types where taking up space, I got very incomplete results even with using psexec running as system account due to inadequate permissions on the user's
    folders.
We also need  the PST Capture Tool to have rights to read into their documents folders and move any psts found into the users archive mailbox.
Rather than having to go to each user's redirected documents fiolder one by one and take ownership to change permissions, is there a more efficient way to have an account running the PST Capture Tool and WindirStat have access to read and change files in
    the user's redirected documents folders?
I thought of just removing the option in the GPO that says "Grant the user exclusive rights to My Documents," but I don't think that will work on pre-existing
folders that already have permissions set.

    Hi,
Based on my research, if you already have a bunch of existing redirected My Documents folders set up with the
Grant the user exclusive rights to My Documents check box selected, the only documented way to regain access to the folders is to take ownership of each individual folder and manually edit the permissions to give the Administrators group full
    control.
We can use powershell script to help regain access to the folders, for more details, please go through the below link:

  • Import into iPhoto 9  originals and modified

    Terrance,
When I manage to get my large library moved will the resulting library in iPhoto 9 have both originals and the ones that I have modified along with individually dated pictures. These are not the dates that I imported them but the dates I have given them to correspond to the approximate dates that they were taken?
I think I asked this before but have lost the thread.
    Thanks again for your help.
    Barbara Westmoreland

connect the two systems together (network, FireWire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system - launch iPhoto and it will convert the library as needed - be very careful not to accidentally open the old library open the old system with the new iPhoto - the conversion can not be undone
+_*Your moved and converted library will be identical in every respect to the original library*_+

  • HT202796 I can not copy, modify, any file from my Mac to external hard disk,  of the seagate brand (fast HDD Portable Drive)  I don´t know  if I need some software to copy and  modify files in my hard disk external ? Could you help me please?

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Save and make file name change

When I save as, I want the image to be the name of the file I type so that all subsequent changes can be saved only by clicking "save" and not having to browse to and rename the file EVERY TIME. Sometimes this works properly, sometimes it doesn't. It seems very random.
I think it has something to do with "save as a copy" but more often than not, that option is greyed out so I couldn't set it if I wanted to.

Photoshop invokes "Save As Copy" functionality when it senses you can't save all the things in your image document in the format you've chosen.
For example, if an image has layers, or channels beyond R, G, and B, or is in 16 bit mode, it will not be able to save all these things in a JPEG.  Thus it invokes "Save As Copy" functionality, and makes the assumption you'd like to save the whole document, including all the extra stuff, in a separate master file in a format that can handle everything - e.g., .psd.
This leads to this (normal) behavior:
    1.  You work on a design or photo that has a bunch of fancy stuff in it (e.g., some layers, some masks, some extra channels, in 16 bit modes).
    2.  You Save As a master .psd file.  This does NOT invoke Save As Copy, and DOES set the default save filename.
    3.  You work on it some more.
    4.  You Save As a .jpg file - for example to prepare for publishing it.  This invokes Save As Copy and the default filename remains .psd.
    5.  You try to exit Photoshop and it tells you that you haven't saved your .psd master file, so you save it.
If you want the Save As operation to reset your default filename, flatten it, remove channels, lower color depth, or whatever to make it compatible with the format you're saving, so that Save As Copy isn't forced.  Or Save As another different .psd or .tif that can handle all those features.
    Hope this helps with understanding.

  • Relocated originals to referenced -- file names changed

    Hi all,
I think I was a little careless when I moved a year's worth of originals from managed to referenced files (on an external hard drive).  All the files seem to have been renamed with a "root" from the last file that I had exported.  I'm sure this was an oversight on my part and I should have taken a couple extra seconds to loof at everything.
Is there any way to re-re-name the files on the hard drive so that they have their original file name?
    Thank you!

Is there any way to re-re-name the files on the hard drive so that they have their original file name?
Only individually and manually. Aperure does not remember, what the original file used to be called.
Or restore the library and the originals from your backup.
You can relocate the files again, sorted by date, and use a naming scheme close to the original filenames, perhaps by looking up the original names in your backup.
If your originals used to be called imgxxxx.CR2 or similar, you could re-relocate them with the naming scheme "Custom name with index" and set the custom name to "img".
Then edit the preset to let the counter start at the last used counter :
