Originals won't open in iPhoto, Preview, Photoshop; Corrupted files?

I am using the latest version of iPhoto 6 (6.0.5, I think).
I have 2 external Firewire hard drives. One is for backup. One is for my music and pictures.
Everytime I would start iPhoto I would get "rebuild thumbnail cache". Knowing this is not normal, I used the latest version of Backup, and backed up to an external hard drive.
Now the external hard drive with the music and photos has failed completely (I think the circuit board is fried, but that's another story).
I restored my iPhoto library from my backup, to my computer's main drive. I checked permissions, and none required fixing.
Now all of my pictures are corrupted. The thumbnails show, but neither the originals nor the modified picture files will open in iPhoto, Preview, or Photoshop. I get the infamous "unknown or invalid JPEG marker type" error.
And I have rebuilt the iPhoto database several times to no avail.
I have 13500 pictures in my library, including the birth of my daughter and 3 years of her growing up. There must be a way to fix this.
Please help!

Sorry to hear of your problems.
Right now I would concentrate on getting the pics back, and figure out the iPhoto part later.
Select one of the pics in the Finder and try change the file suffix: if it's pic.jpg, then try pic.JPG or .jpeg and see if that helps.
Try open the pics with Graphic Converter, which seems to be less fussy about things. You can download it here: http://www.lemkesoft.com/
BackUp (if this is the Apple App we're talking about) creates a pkg file. Can you see the one you restored from? Right click on it, and choose 'Show Package Files. Inside you'll find a .dmg file. This contains the actual files. Mount the dmg and see if you can find the files inside it. Can you view them in Preview?

iPhoto can't find photo even though the thumbnail is present. Any help, there are dozens of photos in my library that won't open as iPhoto can't find them. This is probably a very common question!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We need to know the details of your problem and situation, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when you launch iPhoto to open your library?
what fixes have you tried before coming here?
    where is you library located?
how long has this been occuring?
did you apple any updates or upgrades just prior?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
What do you see when you click on a thumbnail?

  • Elements 13 won't open from iphoto

Elements 13 won't open from iphoto. I have gone in Preferences/Advanced/ and changed the Edit photos to Elements 13.

a single user license entitles the user to install and activate on up-to two computers.  but that license doesn't really permit that 2nd installation to be used by another person.
so, if you son was the user on your computer he could sign in using his adobe id on your computer and use pse on your computer (as well as his own -  but not both computers at any one time).
if a 2nd user (you) wanted to use pse, they should purchase their own license.

  • CS3 InDesign won't open a CS2 In Design .INX file

CS3 InDesign won't open a CS2 In Design .INX file.
I sent my graphic designer an .INX file created on CS2
and he got an error message and said he could not open.
He said it is not possible.
He lost the job - because he didn't want to investigate further.
I can't imagine ADOBE leaving this problem unsolved!
    What do I do??

I don't recall that. I can visualise the situation, but then I would expect it to create the same lost feature problems as encountered in opening with an earlier version. So there would still be a risk that the file would lose something in translation.
And then again, if a CS2 plug-in has been used and is required to open the file, I would expect the translation into XML to ignore anything that can't be translated, and for the depleted file still to open in CS3.

I am using photoshop CS5 and purchased a canon 7D Mark II and my files won't open. I updated to the photoshop 8.7.1 and my files still won't open. How do I fix this?

Assuming you mean ACR (Adobe Camera Raw plug-in) 8.7.1, not "Photoshop" what you write makes no sense.
ACR 8.7.1 needs at least CS6 to run.  You will never be able to open your raw files from that camera directly in CS5.  There will be no further updates for the obsolete, unsupported CS5 applications.
You have to go the free, stand alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.7.1.  Locate it, download it, install it and then launch and run it on ever folder of raw files to convert them to raw DNGs you can then open in your CS5 setup.

  • IPhoto Library Won't Open When IPhoto is Launched

    Hello,
    I need some help please.
I have not changed any settings on my Macbook. I went to open IPhoto the other day as per usual, the application launched but the library did not open (none of my photos show up).
It does not give me any error messages. The IPhoto menu bar shows up at the top of the screen but the library does not show.
I can see my photos if I go to the All Documents tab in the Finder window, it says they are located in the IPhoto Library/Data. If I click on one to open, Preview is set as the default and IPhoto does not come up as an option to open the photo. If I go to other applications and click open with IPhoto I get the error message:
    UNREADABLE FILES: 1
The following files could not be imported. The file is in the IPhoto library.
I have not done anything to my computer. It is less than a year old, I do not understand why the library has disappeared.
    Thanks,
    San

I have also had this problem...all my photos disappeared in my previous version of iphoto, and I just installed ilife 08. My photo library seemed to get all messed up, so I trashed it and reinstalled the photos from my backup HD with Time Machine. iphoto says the library is there (it's in my pictures file in the finder), but they aren't in iphoto. I can't restore any individual photos, because iphoto says they are already there, and if I replace them, they still don't show up (The old version of iphoto, where the photos were still listed in the finder was much easier to use!).
I trashed the preference file. I am not being asked for user options except about the digital camera. What do you mean by 'point iphoto at it again'?
It also said that a lot of photos couldn't be imported because the files were wrong...but they were in my old version of iphoto (pre-ilife). I'm so confused. I have backed up all my photos but can't figure out how to get them on the computer. Arrrgghhhh.
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime won't open with iPhoto

I have several small movies downloaded into iPhoto. I double click on them and nothing happens...they won't open Quicktime. All my software is fully updated so I don't have a clue what to do next. I know I can download them again to imagecapture and they play. I'd like to see them open in iPhoto. Thanks

iMovie is a cool app - have fun with it; while you're editing your movies, also learn about iDVD which would be the final step when creating movies: it has really cool themes (the screen you'll see when the DVD first starts playing in the DVD player).
As for stills: yes, you can get a still (as simple as taking a screen shot while pausing the movie), but be warned: the quality will not be anything worthwhile. I've tried it; the reason for the quality loss is the fact that you're looking at a movie file format; getting a still will render it into (most likely) a .jpg format and there will be significant loss of quality.
And, the previous version of Quicktime should be on your install disk (it's Quicktime 7) and it'll be placed in your Applications -> Utilities folder during the install.
Oops - is your profile correct? You're showing 10.5.x (Leopard) and the above notes are for Snow Leopard.
Edit: and here is the link to a direct download (IF you have Snow Leopard):

  • Lightroom won't open an image in Photoshop CS2

I have Photoshop 1.1 on a PC running Windows XP. I can't open a Lightroom image in Photoshop CS2 through the "photo" menu because the menu selection to open an image in Photoshop is dimmed. Also in "Preferences" in the "external editors" tab it says "Photoshop not found." My Photoshop is on the same drive as Lightroom. Am I wrong in assuming LR should open an image in CS2?
In a related matter I opened a Photoshop customer support case about this, but did not receive a reply. Is this typical of Adobe? Isn't this the kind of question they should answer even without a paid support plan?

    Richard,
What I did when faced with a similar situation was to go to Control Panel, and select Add or Remove Programs, then select Uninstall or Change for Adobe Photoshop CS2, then when prompted whether to Uninstall or Repair, choose Repair. This will fixup all the registry entries that appare to be missing from your system.
    Works for me at least.

  • SWF links won't open in Dreamweaver preview

    Hi,
I'm kinda new to flash and feeling my way around things, but I've run into a snag and haven't found an answer on any forums yet.
I've created a navigation bar for a website using movie clips with nested animation and I made those movie clips links to different pages in my website.
When I preview the file in Flash CS3, the links work fine. However, when I preview the SWF file in the the webpage built in dreamweaver, the links won't act like links anymore.
This is my code to handle the link:
    var urlRequest:URLRequest =
        new URLRequest('iengine.html');
    ielink.addEventListener
        (MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, gotoLinkHandler);
    function gotoLinkHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void{
        navigateToURL(urlRequest,'_self');
Am I making a common mistake? Or is there something else I need to help flash integrate with dreamweaver?
Thanks so much for any help!

You need to name the links in the Flash file as if it were living in the same folder as the html file that holds it... essentially because when you load it into that file, that file becomes its relative reference for loading/targeting.

  • IDVD 09 won't open an Archived project iDVD 08 - Files not found or crashes

I created a project some time ago in '08 and archived it. I want to open it and make some changes but every time I open it, it shows a series of files it can't find. I can open the package and find these files easily. I have tried copying the assets folder from the archive pkg and then pointing idvd to these files, but it won't allow me to continue.
This is killing me. Every time I think I'll just sit down and play with my mac I have all these issues.
Any help is appreciated. It has already sucked away my Saturday.
    Message was edited by: aj_jac

Strange because iDvd hasn't changed all that much over the months (if not years). But let's give the following a try regardless. You don't by chance happen to have access to '08 version still, do you? Maybe on another hard drive or separate older mac?
If you simply no longer have the older version, then may I ask if you have tried disposing of the plist for iDvd followed by a complete restart?
Go to your HOME folder (the one that looks like a house) > Library >Preferences >
    com.apple.iDvd.plist
Drag and drop this file to the trash and restart your mac. Won't hurt the existing project nor your mac.
I'll check back with you later, most likely tomorrow. Or someone else may offer to help as well ....
    Good luck!

  • ITunes opens but not without annoying "Corrupt File" message.

My iTunes (whether iPod is connected or not) will open, but I get an annoying message popping up and I have to check the licensing agreement each time. The message says:
    "iTunes: iTunes.exe - Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings...\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."
Besides running Chkdsk (which I don't know how to do anyway), what can I do about this? iTunes works fine once I open it, but I'm sick of seeing that message every time.
    Dell Latitude D620   Windows XP

sorry to butt in Rachyl, but i don't think this is actually one of the ipod chkdsk errors. the message path for it is referencing the path to an itunes preference file:
    "iTunes: iTunes.exe - Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\Documents and Settings...\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml
... so in this case, i think we'd better take the message at its word and run a chkdsk over the C drive.
for instructions on how to run chkdsk (and guided help if you'd prefer to run that), see this MS KB doc:

  • Photoshop Corrupting Files When Rendering Gradients

Hello there, I'm a first time poster, with a long time problem.
My Photoshop is corrupting files in a very destructive fashion, and it seems to be tied to the live rendering of gradients. Not just blur filters, as in this thread (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/751036?start=200&tstart=0) but opacity adjustments in layers, and hue/brightness shifts. This happens usually in files with large dimensions, but not necessarily complicated layer structures.
This type of corruption, which renders blocks, tesselated shapes, or inverts/fills odd layers, seems to be a problem for multiple users, but I haven't seen a solution.
I think I may be the first person to link it directly to the live rendering of gradients- rather than just the blur filters. Anything that has to render a gradated shift across the image seems to be the culprit. Usualy starting as a solid, and ending as a transparent. However, simply adjust hue/brightness over an opaque layer will make the corruption happen as well. Which leads me to believe that this corruption is caused by live on screen rendering of gradient shifts.
Does anyone have any further thoughts or potential solutions?
    Here are my specs:
    CS6 13.0.4 x 64
    Mac OSX v.10.7.5
    3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    12 GB 1066 MHz DDR3

I do not understand what you writing in either append.  Please post some  screen capture that show us  the problems your having. Its hard to be the first person to do anything . Your most likely not the first one.
