Orphan 'Files' vs orphan 'STYLES'?

Developing and maintaining hundreds of web pages for a web site can be a hassle (I know - preaching to the choir.)
DW has a nice feature for identifying and locating unused (orphan) files,
however,
Page designs evolve over time.
Hard to keep track of all pages that call for a style that is no longer defined or have a style definition that is no longer used.
Sure would be nice to be able to
(1) identify and locate unused 'Styles' in stylesheets and/or in documents or to
(2) produce a list of all styles defined in the head of all pages of a web site.
e.g.
last year I created some pages that needed a <p> with a smaller font and had a margin of 10 px on all sides.
I defined that style in the head of the document.
Later I standardized on a style that I use on several pages that is only slightly different.
Created a new style in a style sheet.
Even replaced the style identifier for paragraphs on pages I could find that used the old reference to the style I don't want to use any more.
Problem is - I still have pages that have the old unused style definition in the head of the document.
I know, I can search the site for any source code that contains '.dumstyle_icky' and replace or delete it.
But I've been a proliferous experimentor.
Tons of old pages to wade through.
Am I the only one that has this kind of problem on a site redisign?
Is there an extension, etc., that can help with this kind of houskeeping?
I purchased 'CSS Edit'. Nice CSS editor but no help organizing styles or cleaning up css on existing htm or php documents.
dan h.

If you use Firefox (and everyone should IMHO), there's an add-on for it called Dust-Me Selectors that finds unused CSS selectors in pages and keeps a log to cross check against other site pages.

  • How do I get back to the newest file dialog box style in LabVIEW?

I have LabVIEW 7.1 and LabVIEW 6.0.2 installed on the same machine.  When I doubleclick a .vi file it tries to open in LV602.  Of course, if it is a LV71 VI I get an error and it doesn't open.  Then I run LV71 and load the desired VI--in this case by using the Open arrow to find it in the "recently opened" list.  Now, I've made this mistake before, especially when I don't remember whether I used LV602 or LV71 to create the VI, and nothing bad has happened.
But this time something undesirable did happen:  all Open File dialog boxes are of the old funky style.  How do I get the file dialog boxes back that I've grown used to seeing when I use LV71?
    CLUES:
    1.  I get the old style dialog box even when I try to open a VI--not just when a running VI invokes it.
    2.  The built version of the VI brings up the correct, new style, file dialog box--unlike the development environment.
I haven't found any settings in the options area that would appear to affect the file dialog box style.  Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

NI-DAQ has usually been working fine in

important is the order of installation. Start first with the lowest
LabVIEW version and install the latest NI-DAQ that supports that
LabVIEW version. Then go to the next LabVIEW version and install again
the latest NI-DAQ version that supported this LabVIEW version and so
on. I'm regularly working with 6.1 up to 7.1 and starting with 8.0
slowly and haven't had real show stoppers yet.

  • How i can e-print a file in booklet style?

Is there any configuration to do so i will be able to print from anywhere to my 6500A plus HP printer a access file in booklet style? i tried to export it in several formats but i can use the booklet style printing only in the network that the printer is setup...with the use of e-print i cant manage to do it...i can print it but not in booklet style...

as my understanding with eprint what you send to the printers email is what you should get. If you have published a booklet type doc and sent it to your printers email for printing then that shoule print in how you seted it up.
    Hope that helps. Thanks!

  • Linked Adobe Tagged Text files importing without styles

I have several data-heavy weekly publications where suddenly, the link to all Adobe Tagged Text format files have the proper paragraph styles and character styles stripped on being placed.  I'm aware of the default settings issue, where you deselect all and make sure the character styles is none, and that does not seem to be the issue. Specifics are
Working in CS 5 (Version 7.0.4)
The Adobe Tagged Text format files are exported from Excel spreadsheets
The InDesign documents have links to the Adobe Tagged Text format files, and Update Link is used inside InDesign to update the text when the file is exported from the spreadsheet.
When the publications are opened on my workstation, ALL files linked to Adobe Tagged Text files are not imported correctly, they revert to the Basic Paragraph style.
These are not new documents I'm designing or new Adobe Tagged Text files, this is part of a production process that has worked without issue for years.
When the same documents are opened on another workstation, and Update Links used, they come in perfectly, so it doesn't seem to be a document or file corruption problem, but a problem with my environment or ID settings.
It's not one specific document or file, it is every single document that has a link to an Adobe Tagged Text file (and we have lots, I tried several!)
I've opened the text files in the text editor to check them, but as I mentioned: same document, same files, I'm the only one who can't update without stripping out the styles.
    Thanks! Nancy

Hi, Peter! Thanks for the response. Yes, it's really Tagged Text. See below. After exporting from the spreadsheet and database, opening the document in InDesign, and selecting update link, we do no editing in InDesign after the fact because everything is already setup exactly as we want it with the Tagged Text format.
I have literally hundreds of these among several different documents, updated weekly, mainly dealing with prices and numbers. Every one of the links to Tagged Text format files in every publication now strips out the Tagged Text paragraph style and character style formatting on Update Link on my workstation only. On my other two workstations, the links update without issue, and everything is correct in the final document.
So I'm beginning to think I need to look at rebuilding something, maybe as Joel said, replacing preferences. I keep looking for a workstation or ID option that might effect this.

  • Placing Word File with Character Styles

    InDesign CS5, windows 7
I am hoping for some guidance.
I am creating a directory from an Excel file.  This is what I have done and where I am at.
    1. Edited Excel File to ad "Headers" for Name, Address, etc...
    2. Used Mail Merge in MS word to create a Directory.
         - Created Character Styles in word for different fields.
         - Did some minor editing to remove stray spaces, etc...
    3. Placed wrod file in InDesign.  Layout is created with basic text boxes that are split into 4 columns, each box linked to the next (I have about 30 pages of this).
At first, this was working OK, but the CHaracter styles were not coming through (Actually, they were lost during the merge in Word).  So, I did some work and found that there was a code I could add to the Merge Fields oin Word to force the Character styles to be retained.
Anyway, I did that.  However, now when I place the Word File in InDesign, it appears to hang at "Processing Character Styles".
I removed the code from the merge, figuring I could go back, but I still get that hang.
    Any suggestions are appreciated...

    Any suggestions are appreciated...
I think I followed most of your explanation. But, since we can't see what you're doing, it's hard to know 100% what your reasons are for doing what you do. F'rinstance, I wonder why you're bothering with the Word merge at all. Without knowing why you have to run the merge in Word, I'd suggest this:
add headers to your Excel file
    save out .csv
Use InDesign's Data Merge tool, skip Word entirely
Why do you need to use Word's Mail Merge? If you've never used Data Merge in ID, you should probably take a look at the Help file entry to see if it will work for you.

  • Importing word file - problem in style capturing

    Hi All,
I have a problem in importing the wordfile into Indesign CS3.
We have created all the Para & character styles in Indesign CS3.
The same style was created in Word also, we have a set of guys to do the pre-editing the input wordfile which we got from client.
We have applied all the character and para styles in Wordfile, which uses the same names in Indesign CS3.
When we import the wordfile into the Indesign CS3 all the para & character shows "+" marks and the style was not applied.
What will be the problem, why it is behaving like this, we have checked the "import options" while importing the word, but it fails.
Is anyone have these type of problem.
We need to know that how to solve this, since the reference part has lots of character style applied, we cannot clear the "+" manually in Indesign CS3 to solve.
    Kavya

    > So we like to open a topic reg. this to get solved.
This is a user-to-user forum. We're all just users like you.
From what I could tell from your post, Indesign is working as intended.
There is no solution because there really is no problem.
    > Giving char style for bold and italics and special character will
    > won't solve this, after importing into the template we need to clear
    > the overrides that become manual one and we don't know what else has
    > changed in the content, this will leads to problems.
Yes. Clearing overrides does clear all non-styled formatting, which is
why I suggested using Find/Replace to find the good formatting before
you clear the bad formatting. Specifically, you mentioned wanting to
keep bold and italic. The other character-level formatting from Word
that you will probably want to keep is:
    --Strikethrough
    --Underline
    --Superscript
    --Subscript
    --Small Caps
    --All Caps
    --Bold Ital
    --Bold
    --Ital
There may be other character-level unstyled formatting you want to keep.
This depends on what the author put into the file.
If you're getting the same kind of files all the time, you can develop a
routine for these Find/Replaces. You can save your Find/Replaces, use
GREP, even string all the Find/Replaces together in a script. What you
can't do is expect Indesign to know which unstyled formatting is "good"
and which formatting is "bad". Only you know what you want to keep and
what you want to throw away.

  • Multiple File uploads Hotmail Style

    Hi all,
I have been trying to do multiple file uploads in the hotmail style, i.e. to store all the filenames in a list one by one and uploading all files all at once. What I couldn't understand is the part on how hotmail stores each filename in a list and refreshes the page. I have tried doing a javascript->applet communication but it's just not the same. I apologize if this is not the right forum for this question. Can anyone please help me out? Thanks.

Thanks but I am actually looking at doing some form of manipulation on the files in the list, i.e. get all the filenames from the list and produce outputs to be saved on the server and call the applet. Therefore, I will need to understand the minor details of how hotmail does it. I really appreciate your help anyway. Cheers. :)

  • Can the XML style sheet be embedded in the report file?

My customer would like to be able to share test reports with several locations. The problem is that sending just the XML report file is not enough. The report file points to a style sheet that must exist at the specified path on the destination PC. It creates problems when one simply wants to email over a test report. I have customized the style sheet slightly to make things easier to read. So, can I embed my custom style sheet in each report file?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
The XML style sheet should not be embedded into the report file. Since XML would represent raw data, you would not include information on how to interpret it. However, there is a way for you to easily reference your style sheet, even when it is on another computer.
    1) Go to Configure >> Report Options in TestStand, and change the style sheet file to your style sheet.
    2) Uncheck the "Store Absolute File Path" box.
    3) Make sure the style sheet is in the same folder as your report.
You can view this on any computer, and now a relative path is now being used to reference the file.

  • PSE7, xp, how to load layer styles? no .db3 file found

I have read all kinds of information about how to load custom layer styles and I've come to the conclusion that I need to install all styles into the folder where the other styles live (presets>styles) and I need an .xml file for each style to see the style in elements program and I need to delete the original .db3 file and let elements rebuild it when it opens but I cannot find an original .db3 file...anywhere.  Nor do I have any existing .xml files that coordinate with the original layer styles to manipulate for the new layer styles.  What am I missing?

    Hi,
You would have to follow these steps -
    Hi,
These steps would help you get them back.
    1 - Quit Elements
    2 - Go to the path - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale\en_US (for XP)
    { or Vista - C:\ ProgramData\ Adobe\ Photoshop Elements\ 6.0\ Locale\ en_US\ }
(If you aren't in the US, use the appropriate Locale)
Note that the "Application Data" is a hidden directory, so you will have to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in the Folder Options in order to be able to see it.
3 - You should see a file named MediaDatabase.db3. Rename the file to something else, such as MediaDatabase.old
4 - Restart the Elements Editor. You will see it rebuilding the database. Do not touch anything. It will take a while to rebuild. After thats done all things should be back to normal.
Hope you're able to find the files and it works for you.

Hi I want to rename many files so they can uploaded to my website.
In order for them to be uploaded they must be formatted in the following way.
    Firstname=Lastname=lab=summary
I would input the firstname, lastname and summary for each file as that info is unique. Every file name's style will be the same. the first letter capiatlized in Firstname and Lastname and "lab" in non caps. there is also a "=" between all the words, no spaces.
Is it possible to make an applescript program where I can drop the files in to the program and have a form open asking me to complete the FIrstname, Lastname and SUmmary fields while filling in the rest?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Import word files in InDesign but only Form Text or selected styles

    Hi Guys,
I have this magazine I design a few times a year and the articles are sent to me as word-files with tables they have to fill in in order to know who the author is, what the title will be etc.
I would like to find a way to easily import the content of their articles etc. in Indesign and I found out that importing Word files is simple as goodbye. Me happy!
But now I constantly have to copy-paste their article text out of the table and paste it elsewhere in the InDesign file, so I thought: isn't there a possibility to, while importing the word file, select what styles should be imported (so that the instructions I put in the template for their word articles for instance won't be put into the InDesign file but only the forms they fill in) or can I setup the importing of it to only import the form field text (if the word file would be set up as a form with protected items fields they can fill in?).
    Many thanks!
    Bob

I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?
    thanks so much,
