Orphan photos in the Photos app

On my iPhone 5s I have previously synced several thousand photos from selected folders on my mac to the iPhone.
Over time a great deal of these have become "stuck in memory" on the iPhone, many of them even as duplicates.
I have found no way of getting rid of these "orphan" files, which seems to continue a life of their own, unable to be reached from iTunes.
Even after having unchecked "Sync Photos", and answering Yes to deleting the previously synced photos on the iPhone, they remain in the Photos tab of the Photos App, even though the corresponding Albums are no longer shown.
When opening one of these "orphan" photos on the phone it cannot be deleted or edited, but only shared.
I have found no way of getting rid of these (they are taking up +10Gb of memory it appears - sometimes during sync iTunes will say that 10Gb of memory is used by Photos, but when it completes, it will claim that they are gone again - however they are still on the phone).
I have tried deleting the backup of the phone, creating a new backup, reinstalling the vanilla iOS8, and then restoring from my newest backup, but situation remains. Seems llike the "forgotten" photos get into the backup and are reborn in the iPhone after restoring the backup.
Anyone know a way for the Photos app to clean up it's own space? Or some 3rd party app than can do it? Tried PhoneClean in trial mode, but it did not see anything wrong.
I would hate having to start from a vanilla iOS an reinstall everything, and setting up all apps again.
I am using IOS8.1.3 and MacOSX 10.10.2 (but syncs were originally done on iOS 7 and MacOSX 10.9.

If the photos were placed in the Photos app by synching to iTunes, you can't from the iPad. You will need to resynch to remove them. The fact that you do not get a trash symbol when vioewing the individual images indicates that may be the case.
If they are images imported from another app, or taken with the iPad:
Open Photos app
Tap on Photos in the center top menu (as opposed to Phtoto Steam or Albums)
Tap on Edit (upper right)
Tap on the images to be deleted (you should see a check mark appear in the lower left of the image)
Tap Delete (If the image exists in albums or PhotoStream, you will be prompted to Delete Everywhere

SInce iOS 8.1 update which was hours ago im not able to upload photos to Facebook using its app, I can straight from the photo album but that's not how I'm used to neither how I like it, I get a "no internet connection" error, it's happening either ways on 3G or Wifi

Wife had the same problem which I have just fixed by deleting the FB app and reloading it. Works fine now.

Before the photos app, I use to just plug my iPhone into my macbook and import my pictures to a selected folder in documents. I have all my photos stored from all my iPhones on my external hard drive. How do I do this now with the photos app? You can continue t do that using Image Capture instead of importing into Photos - or you can import into Photos and go to the last import, select all and export tot he location of your wishes

In the new Photo app 'Projects' will not stay open

In the new Photo app. released last week, I can not get the 'projects' to remain open. It just crashes and closes and actually now , since this afternoon I can not open any of it without it crashing.
i have a mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.3.
i have a few photo books, slideshows and cards in the projects if this helps.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it, even if its just so I can access the photos.

Many people are reporting the project->crash problem. To the best of my knowledge, there is no fix for it.
For some folks, a temporary workaround is to select View->Sidebar and access the projects *individually*.
Hopefully this will work for you, fairymoo!
Apple's Meta-Problem: Inexplicably, "Photos" is *NOT* listed as an Application Community on the top-level web-site "https://discussions.apple.com/welcome" ... thus plenty of folks (including the poster and me too) have been unable even to find the right community for seeking/posting solutions.
Conclusion: not a smooth roll-out, Apple! Not least, why is the Photos Community so difficult to locate?

Why is the Photo App on my iPhone 4 showing 2 Photo Streams?

- I upgraded to iOS 5 from 4.3.5
- I followed the iOS 5 wizard and configured iCloud with 1 of my Apple ID's
- I did not set up iCloud on my MacBook Air on that time yet
- MacBook Air was upgraded as well (MAC OS X upgrade, iPhoto upgrade, etc ...)
- I figured I was using the wrong Apple ID
- Went to Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (deleted everything)
- Then configured iCloud on my MacBook Air with another Apple ID
- Configured iCloud on my iPhone with the same Apple ID
=> I now have 2 Photo Streams when I open the Photo App ...
I rebooted the device already, no luck.
I might do a backup/restore to see if that solves the issue if no one can help.
Please find a screenshot to ilustrate the issue I'm encountering
In the meantime my iPhone has already succusfully synced with iTunes multiple times.

How much space is used by your Other? You may be able to reduce.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. Mail is backed up automatically. If you make backups automatically, open Mail application and then, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities). You will access to the Time Machine interface, and you will be able to see all your mails of all the backups you have, and you will be able to restore them. It means that your mails are backed up onto the Time Capsule

What OS version? What's the exact error? Exactly when does the error occur? What previous versions? What is on the screen when the error displays? Does Photoshop get fully open?
Try opening Photoshop holding down Shift key immediately to turn off plug-ins. Lots of good suggestions here: Photoshop: Basic Troubleshooting steps to fix most issues

Camera Roll is not the same in Camera app vs Photos app ???

iPhone 4S issue...
I just got a new iPhone 4S. Restored from a 3GS backup.
I noticed yesterday that some of the photos that I took with the built-in Camera app aren't showing in the Camera Roll. Specifically, the last 3 pictures that I took plus a couple three other older ones. But it only happens when I view the Camera Roll through the Camera app. Using the Photos app I can see all the photos I've taken.
- When viewed from the Photos app, the "Albums" list says "Camera Roll (254)" and all photos show up.
- When I open the Camera app and click on the picture thumbnail in the bottom left and it opens the Camera Roll it says "248 of 248" at the top of the screen and I can't see my last three photos plus a couple more other older ones. They're not in the thumbnail index and I can't swipe to them from the individual photo display. Again, this is when viewing the Roll from the Camera app.
- I have no other Albums but "Camera Roll". None of the photos have been edited either.
I called Apple support and they instructed me to reboot my iPhone. This didn't change much except now the last "missing" photo shows up as the small thumbnail in the lower left of the Camera screen. But when I click to view the Camera Roll, it's still nowhere to be found (along with the other "missing" ones). The Photos app still shows all of them just fine.
What the heck is going on? It sounds like a bug to me... the Camera app and the Photos app should be pulling the same data, right?
Apple support suggested that I connect it to my Mac and do a Restore. Even if this works, it doesn't give me much confidence that it won't happen again as it seems like a bug. Should I report it?

im also having a problem on my iPhone 4 that just started today, about 100 or so photos and videos just completely disappeared.. basically it shows the last 4-5 photos that i took, and then the first 50 or so.. everything in between is gone.
when i view from the camera vs the photos app the last 4-5 differ.. so who knows *** is going on...
but if you download a program called iExplorer you can view and download everything, as all the files are still there

How do I export an album from the iPhone Photos app in a form that retains location information so I can import it to ArcMap or Google Earth?

I have an iPhone 4S with OS 5.1 installed and I have taken several hundred photos that are geotagged and that show up in the Places page in the Photos app. These were taken for field work and have data in them that we want to use to tie information in the photos to locations in a GIS application. Therefore I would like to be able to export the mapped locations along with the photos in a way that would allow me to upload the locations to ArcMap or to Google Earth. I know that the individual photos have location information but the process of uploading them to Panoramio one at a time is labor-intensive, whereas I can take an entire album in the Photos application and quickly display locations tied to photos on the screen.
Also these photos were taken before I enabled iCloud on my iPhone and I'm wondering how to upload them even though they were taken previously. When I go into the "share" menu my only options are email, tweet, message, and print. I'd like to send the whole album to iCloud so I can at least bring it back into applications on my Macbook Pro.
Does anyone have a recommendation as to how I can go about doing either of these things?

Go to about half way down the page. The script works well, but I'd like to change it so that I only export Versions w/ a specified "main rating" (or greater than a minimum rating)
If you look at the script, there's a line:
"set theimages to every image version as list"
FYI: "image version" is an Aperture class that represents an image version. "main rating" is a property of "image version"
Is there a way to modify this applescript statement to spec only those "image versions" that meet a min "main rating"? I tried a bunch of things, and none of them compiled. (I need to learn Applescript)
If not, then how could this be done w/ a little loop in Applescript?

Known bug. Quit the Camera App, double-tap the home key and delete Camera from the recent apps bar. Fire it up again, should be good.
