Orphaned files on atv

hi
just noticed i have old video podcasts appearing on my apple tv which are unplayable and are not present in my itunes library or anywhere on my mac.
how do i remove these orphaned files to stop them appearing on my atv
ps its not a syncing issue these files are not available to sync.
thanks
chris

I believe I can solve this
Orphaned podcasts plagued me for bit until I found out how to fix it.
What is happening is that for some reason the actual podcast media file has been deleted, but it is still listed in your iTunes library (even if it doesn't look like it, believe me the problem is with the iTunes *library file*).
How to fix if you can't see the podcast listed in iTunes?
Simples. Create a Smart Playlist that looks for media is Podcast.
If you are having the same exact issue I had, then you will see the troublesome podcasts listed in this smart playlist even if they were not listed elsewhere in the library)
Now, to delete them, you must either hold down the option key (alt) and right click and select Delete or hold down the option key and hit backspace to delete the entry. You'll be asked if you want to delete the file from your library (say Yes) and also if you want to move the file to the trash (yes) again, even though there's no file to move).
re-sync Apple TV. Bingo.

  • URLs in orphaned file list?

when I check for orphaned files on my very old, very messy
website I see urls like "/http:/java.sun.com",
"mailto:[email protected]" and nothing happens when I choose
"open file". I can delete them from the list but when I run the
orphaned files check again they're all back! what's going on?
I recognize most of these as files and links that were
deleted long ago (them and the pages that linked to them). How is
dreamweaver finding these links and what are they doing in the
    orphaned files list?

  • How can I delete orphan files from my itunes library all at once?

My itunes library has 0ver 200k files and about 30,000 were on an external drive that crashed leaving me with 30,000 orphan files that I want to delete from the library. Too many to delete one by one, how can I either sort them by this field to select all with shift click or is there a script to delete them?

AAC is Advanced Audio Coding.  Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD).  More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder).  Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button.  Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder.  After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version."  You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding.  Hopefully your phone will play that.

  • My MacBook Pro (2010) running Mountain Lion is getting slower and slower. How do I fix the orphan files?

My 2010 Macbook pro is running slower and slower. I went to the Genius Bar about eight months ago, and they botted up from the disk, and let it go through and find what  its process to find and fix what I think were "orphan" files. I cannot remember what they did, but when they did it, the speed on my Macbook picked up considerably.
I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion, but these problems do not seem related to that. My 500 GB HDD is about 80% full.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • How do I get rid of 'orphaned' files

    Hi,
What is a good software (free preferably) to use in order to get rid of 'orphaned' files I seem to have migrated over from my old iMac? For example, I have Virtual PC, Print Explosion, Otto game, etc. in there as well as many other orphaned files/folders like this that I won't be using on my Macbook Pro. Is there a software that will detect these so I can SAFELY get rid of all these unnecessary files? Please advise.

This isn't an endorsement since I haven't used it.

Also get EasyFind and search manually (excellent, I have used it.)

  • About orphaned files

    Hi,
I tried to run a sitewide link check and  realized that one of the orphaned files listed was "update_payment.php" ...
    So  I did a sitewide search for  "update_payment.php" and  realized that indeed , a couple of javascript were calling this file  out ("GET","update_payment.php?q="+str,true);
That means "update_payment.php" is not an orphaned file ... it is needed ... I also got that with some images files that were listed as orphaned when they were needed ...
The question is : How can we make the most of this DW feature ? What are the limits ? Anyone has tried it out yet ? It sounds wonderfull to have an option that can get rid out of all those files you acccumulated and don't need anymore !
If DW can find all files that contain "update_payment.php" then it should be able to work out if  "update_payment.php" is being called out anywhere (as long as the filename is not given dynamically obviously)...it doesn't seem to work that way ... "update_payment.php" is a file that is harcoded in php and js files ... why DW considers it as orphaned ?

Hi, thanks for the reply ... it seems like it is not very good with php either when it comes to this kind of link  <?php echo SITE;?>add_tour.php"  ... how can we make the most of this feature ?

  • How to delete orphaned files on itunes?

    hello,
from time to time i synchronize my itunes library with a second computer. after those changes, there are quite a lot of those orphaned files with an '!'sign in itunes. how can i delete them all together from the library. i can go one by one, but it takes so much time.
    thanks for help

I'm not sure why the above link wouldn't work for you. It just worked fine for me. Here's the full link:

This is the only way I know to do it without deleting one by one.

  • "anchor" links and Orphaned files ???

I have a number of "anchor" links to a file named "constitution.html".  This is to allow one to jump to a specific part of a VERY long page (the complete constitution).  The links are like this one constitution.html#a3s1.  When I check in DW CS5 for Orphaned files DW reports this file "constitution.html" as an orphaned file.
Is this normal because of the anchor links part of the link?
Or do I have some unknown problem with my code?
The links to this "orphaned" file are working OK.
    Thanks

Is this normal because of the anchor links part of the link?
    Yes.  Sorry....

  • Is it possible to upload mp4 files to ATV...

Is it possible to upload mp4 files to ATV by way of an FTP application, such as Fetch or Cyberduck?
I'm currently using iTunes to Sync my mp4 over to the ATV, but was wondering if the other way is possible?
    Thanks!

When you drag an MP4 into iTunes, it will Sync it to the ATV. Is there another program that will do that aside from iTunes?
There's a application called ATV Flash, which I don't need, but they have this feature:
    Access Media Anywhere
Don't depend on iTunes any longer. Drag and drop media onto your AppleTV, or even stream it directly from most NAS devices. This feature includes support for FTP, SFTP, SSH and SMB protocols.
I was wondering if there's such an application aside from ATV Flash.
    Thanks!

  • Orphan 'Files' vs orphan 'STYLES'?

Developing and maintaining hundreds of web pages for a web site can be a hassle (I know - preaching to the choir.)
DW has a nice feature for identifying and locating unused (orphan) files,
    however,
    Page designs evolve over time.
Hard to keep track of all pages that call for a style that is no longer defined or have a style definition that is no longer used.
Sure would be nice to be able to
    (1) identify and locate unused 'Styles' in stylesheets and/or in documents or to
    (2) produce a list of all styles defined in the head of all pages of a web site.
    e.g.
last year I created some pages that needed a <p> with a smaller font and had a margin of 10 px on all sides.
I defined that style in the head of the document.
Later I standardized on a style that I use on several pages that is only slightly different.
Created a new style in a style sheet.
Even replaced the style identifier for paragraphs on pages I could find that used the old reference to the style I don't want to use any more.
Problem is - I still have pages that have the old unused style definition in the head of the document.
I know, I can search the site for any source code that contains '.dumstyle_icky' and replace or delete it.
But I've been a proliferous experimentor.
Tons of old pages to wade through.
Am I the only one that has this kind of problem on a site redisign?
Is there an extension, etc., that can help with this kind of houskeeping?
I purchased 'CSS Edit'. Nice CSS editor but no help organizing styles or cleaning up css on existing htm or php documents.
    dan h.

If you use Firefox (and everyone should IMHO), there's an add-on for it called Dust-Me Selectors that finds unused CSS selectors in pages and keeps a log to cross check against other site pages.

  • Can't delete orphaned files

If know how this works and it should be simple. I ran Check Links Sitewide. I highlighted Orphaned Files under the Link Checker tab. There are a lot of them--over 6,000. I want to delete these files. I select all of them and press the Delete button, nothing happens. I select a few and try the same thing. I try it with both delete buttons and with cmd-delete (which works in Mac Finder). I even try checking to see if there is a delete option under the right mouse button.  Still nothing. (unless somehow these files are being deleted invisibly but still show up on the list? Shouldn't the filename disappear from the list when they are deleted?) I checked my keyboard and the delete button is working.  Any ideas what is happening? Any other method I can use to delete these files?

    I suggest recreating your cache.
You will find it in the menus at the top.

  • Orphaned files - broken links - URGENT

    Hi everyone
I am currently going through and deleting 675 orphaned files
and files that are old although if they create a broken link after
deletion this will not show when I re run the link checker even
though I know they are. Does anyone know why this is? I can't keep
deleting things if it is going to create a broken link within the
site. Also, is there any way of finding out where an individual
document is located on the site if at all?
Second issue is that orphaned files that I have deleted in
both the local site and remote site are still coming up when I do
the link check. Why is this so and how can I get them removed from
    the orphaned files list?
    Please help
    Merry

many of the people offering answers use the NNTP newsgroup
    reader version.
the webforum has been flaky lately i think.
Here's my reply from a while ago-
after deleting files- recreate the site cache.
It's under the site menu on older versions, under
    site-->advanced on newer.
dw's link checker checks html links, and links in "behaviors"
    that it
    understands.
it will not check links in most javascript.
What's an example of a broken link that dw didn't warn of
    when deleting the
reported orphan? url address to the page??
and here are links to a google archive of the newsgroup.

  • Removed orphaned files...

    Hi there!
Yesterday I had another system crash and was forced to shutdown my PowerBook. I restarted, logged in as Admin, checked the permissions and my user sparseimage. After that I rebooted with the Tiger-CD to check the harddrive itself.
After all, some permissions need to be fixed, but everything else seemed to be fine.
In the system.log I found a line, which told me that 16 orphaned files were removed. That was after the first reboot after the crash.
Is there a possibility to find out what files that were?
Months ago I had a similar problem. No errors were found at all, but a preference file was corrupt (or missing). So I discovered this error only because the application looks "different".
I know that a system crash is always bad for a filesystem, but it is possible to find out which files are corrupt? I read about a lost+found folder, but it's not in my root directory.
Another more general question: Did I something wrong (I mean AFTER the crash)? I also have Disk Warrior. Is this program better for a filesystem check?
    Thanks for Your help!

    Hi, Martin.
A close reading of Fsck - The UNIX® File System Check Program, which is available online in HTML and PDF formats, would indicate there are situations in which orphaned files will be removed without the creation of the lost+found directory. In some cases, the problem is simply corrected without a need to then add an alias to the files in the lost+found directory.
Orphaned files are not necessarily corrupted files, but rather files which have been "orphaned" with respect to the drive's directory, i.e. disconnected from the directory in some fashion. Granted, an orphaned file is also often corrupted, especially if it is a fragmented file (one that could not be written to contiguous space) and all its fragments could not be found. However, Orphaned status does not necessarily imply "corrupted."
If the actions on the files in question were not noted in the log, and since there's no lost+found folder, there's no way to know.
Finding corrupted files is the proverbial "needle in a haystack" quest. However, the techniques in my "Finding corrupted files" FAQ can help.
IMO, Alsoft DiskWarrior is the tool-of-choice for repairing hard drives when Disk Utility cannot correct the directory corruption. At present, it can only be used with PowerPC-based Macs: a version for Intel-based Macs is pending.
Intel-based Mac users can employ the following third-party tools for directory repair until a Universal version of DiskWarrior is available:
    • Micromat TechTool Pro v4.5.1 or later.
    • The Universal version of Prosoft Engineering Drive Genius.
It doesn't sound like you did anything incorrectly. You may want to review my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ for a recommended procedure and related information.
    Good luck!

  • Orphaned files removed?

    Greetings,
I often see some messages like this one in the Console:
kernel[0]: HFS: Removed 2 orphaned unlinked files
An orphaned file usually means that the disk was corrupted, and since this concerns my startup disk (the only one attached at these times), I'm starting to think I'm losing several files.
Is there a log where I can know which files are concerned (assuming the name can still be read in the partition map)?

Hi again, I think it best to insure you DO NOT have any corruption.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Customize orphan file report?

Using DW CS6 (Windows 7 if that makes a difference) can we customize a broken link/orphan file report in any way? I've been searching around for this for a while and haven't found anything so I'm assuming no but...
    The problem:
We use Adobe Contribute with rollbacks enabled so it will create file strings that contain "_bak" when a page is published to our development server. When generating a report looking for orphan files, I have to weed through thousands (around 10,000 lines in an Excel file) of these false orphans to end up with a list of real orphans. Is there a way to search the site and ignore any files/folders with _bak in the string?
    Thanks!

Thanks both of you. I guess I'd better brush up on my Excel skills.
And I agree Nancy. I never use or trust it to find broken links. I'm strictly using it to locate orphan files that our users neglected to delete from the site. I've used Xenu in the past but found another tool called Deep Trawl that I've been using. Not that it's any better really. I just like the interface a little more.
    Thanks again!
