Orphaned photos (whole film rolls) not found

After a pretty bad crash (whole computer hung), forced restart, a lot of applications have lost their preferences and/or other settings files. For example Mail behaved like on its first run, asking me if I wanted to learn about new features, inbox was empty, but fortunately I could restore com.apple.mail.plist and all was fine.
iPhoto was a little bit more difficult though. First it presented me with an entirely empty library, no folders, nothing, just as if I had started iPhoto on a new computer for the first time. I quit iPhoto and restored "com.apple.iphoto.plist", "AlbumData.xml" and "Library6.iPhoto" from a backup. Then I ran iPhoto again... hurray, everything was the way it used to be... last week. But the photos I had imported since then (about 500) were nowhere to be seen.
Then I learned about iPhoto's feature for recovering orphaned photos. I launched with a bunch of modifier keys pressed, got the dialog, and rebuilt everything (thumbs, database, look for orphaned photos,...). Result: the orphaned photos were still missing. I suspect iPhoto will only find orphaned photos in folders (film rolls) it already knows about, not entire orphaned film rolls.
I located the photos in the FInder ("Filmrol 201" through "Filmrol 230") and tried copying them to the iPhoto window, hoping they would be added in. Nope, iPhoto actually complains it cannot add them to the library because... the files are located inside the library folder?!
I tried screwing with the "AlbumData.xml" file to add entries about the missing rolls, but that did not seem to help, and the entried were simply removed on the next run of iPhoto.
The only possibility seems to be moving the photos to a different location, then importing them into iPhoto from there (which actually makes a new copy of every file). Or maybe I will just import one photo to create a new film roll, then move all the other photos into that film roll folder, then let iPhoto look for orphaned photos.
Any other ideas? What would be the best, cleanest and safest way of making these orphans re-appear?
Also, does anyone know what exactly caused the preferences and other files to be corrupted like that in the first place? Just about any app that was open at the time of the crash, has lost its preferences and sometimes other files completely. I've heard of the same problem happening to other people too. It would be really nice if apps like Mail and iPhoto would keep backups of critical files. I am using FileVault, by the way.

Or can iPhoto "know about" a picture but not display it in the library? That doesn't seem to make sense.
It's for when something has gone wrong, but the first condition is that the pic must have been imported.
In your situation, following the restoring to the earlier db file, these pics were not imported, iPhoto did not know about them, they were not orphans.
iPhoto NEVER looks for photos anywhere. It simply reads it's database. If the file isn't in the database, then , as far as iPhoto is concerned, the file doesn't exist. The ONLY way iPhoto can be introduced to iPhoto is by importing it. Simply having files in folders won't work. Period.
At the very least, the description of the checkbox is misleading.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
As for not importing pics that are in the iPhoto Library folder being a "sensible precaution", well, if these are photos that are not currently included in iPhoto's database, I think it should import them (by updating its library file, obviously not by making new duplicates of the files). But I guess I'm just being too logical now
See the link above.
However, if you read this forum you'll see that when issues arise the inexperienced user will try to re-import the iPhoto Library Folder to iPhoto, on the basis that the pics are "lost". If iPhoto did allow this you'd get libraries populated with thumbnails treated as full sized pics, plus, multiple copies of the fullsized pics on a rather common basis. Personally, I think that's sensible.

  • Photo in camera roll not synced to iCloud

I was out in London the other day and used my phone to take some photos, at one point my phone went below 20% battery therefore any photos taken would not have synced to "my photo stream" until phone is placed on charge again then these would re-sync. However I've just noticed that I have one photo less in "my photo stream" and this is a photo taken when iPhone was below 20% battery.
Why has this photo not synced to iCloud? This should have synced once phone was on charge? Why can't I add it manually to "my photo stream".
P.s. I don't want to add it to a "shared photo stream" and I don't want to edit it the photo and save as a new copy and then the new copy is synced to "my photo stream" the photo was taken on a date and it should have synced.
Can someone please shed some light why this disruption has occurred...?
iCloud isn't perfect but it is great for automated syncing, Apple can definately improve on, I think the 1000 photos v 30 day limitation should be increased.
This sync issue has happened to me before but I need to know why this is happening and if it can be fixed. I don't understand why I can't just add it manually to "my photo stream" and it automatically uploads to the correct place so my camera roll is exactly the same "my photo stream" except videos of course until iOS7, thumbs up Apple improve upon this.

That hasn't answered why this problem has occurred and if you read my original question I said I don't want to edit the photo and create a NEW COPY! Yes of course that work but why didn't it upload in the first place!
PLEASE READ THE QUESTION BEFORE LEAVING A COMMENT!

  • Photo stream, camera roll not syncing

Pictures I'm taking in my camera roll aren't showing in the photo stream on my phone in a very timely manner.  I have iCloud set up properly in both my MBP and iPhone, and I'd like to get a photo to my Photo Stream so I can use it on my MBP.

    Hello Meridarida,
The following troubleshooting steps can help get your Photo Stream working.
From the Home screen, tap Settings > Wi-Fi. Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on and your device is connected to a wireless network. If necessary, troubleshoot your Internet connection on your iOS device.
From your Home screen, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos (Photo Stream on a device using iOS 6) and make sure that My Photo Stream is turned on.
Ensure that the Camera app is closed on the device that took the photo. Photos will not upload from an iOS device to My Photo Stream until the Camera app is closed.
Ensure that your iOS device has not fallen below 20% battery power. To preserve battery life, Photo Stream downloading and uploading are disabled when the battery reaches this threshold. Downloading and uploading will resume once you charge your device and the battery charge is greater than 20%.

  • Photos saved as rolls not date

Hi, with iPhoto 5, when I down loaded pictures from my camera they were saved by date. With iPhoto 6, they are now saved as roll 1, roll 2 etc. Is there anyway I can change the settings to download by date again?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Do you mean in the iPhoto Library Folder and not the iPhoto Window ? If so, no you cannot change things in the iPhoto Library Folder. This is a new system that came in with v6. However, if you're concerned about finding files then There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.

    Any help please?

I got this same message from having installed Leopard (10.5)
and then because the "great Check Point VPN" software doesn't support Leopard I reinstalled Tiger (10.4) from supplied CD's
Yes, photo booth left on my machine was version 2.0.1
and will NOT run under Tiger
    1) first, using Finder, locate your "photo booth" and rename it [or delete it]
    2) using Os X tiger cd 1 find the "Install Bundled software only" icon
    3) Pick "custom install", then expand the "Bundled Applications" until you see Photo Booth
    4) click ALL of them off, except leave Photo Booth flagged [when I pick it, office 2004 TEST drive turns on too, unflag that too]
    5) Press the Upgrade button [don't select easy install, as that will install EVERYTHING]
    6) Photo Booth shows in your Dock and it works

  • Film Roll - sort option

I would love to be able to sort my photos by Film Roll. Right now you can -- well, sorta.
It only sorts them by the date of the film roll. I would like the option to sort by 1) Film Roll date, or 2) Film Roll name. This would allow me to sort my "rolls" in a grouping other than chronilogical, and many times I don't want to have to use albums (smart or otherwise) for a brief change in the display order (albums do have their place, but not always the best option).
Any thoughts from others on here?

    Yim:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As far as I can determine the only sorting of rolls is by roll date, either ascending or descending. The date can be edited. I haven't figured out how iPhoto sorts multiple rolls with the same date. I've changed some dates on rolls to the same date and some end up on top and some at the bottom of those with the same date. It's not alphabetical. I think it has something to do with the modified date of the files.
You can post a feature request at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

  • Film Roll Date Order

I've had this problem a few times and maybe someone knows why and/or a fix:
When I view my photos by film roll now, they are no longer in chronological order. Although the dates of the photos and the roll have not changed, they display incorrectly. If I change preferences to "display most recent at top," they display correctly. Unchecking the box puts them back in the wrong order.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi jtb3,
Clicking on the i icon for the info pane does not open the info pane?

  • Storage & Film rolls

I keep photos on my camera, but each time I download the new photos, some of the old ones come (even though I choose NOT to download old photos). Then when i delete them (the thumbnail) from the Library, i still repete copies in my iPhoto file. How can I not waste space with all the duplicates?
Also, when I move photos from Film Roll to Film Roll, it scrolls ridiculously fast. Is there any way to slow the scrolling down?
    THANK YOU!

Go to iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and check the box at 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now at least we know where your files are going.
After that, you do EVERYTHING in the iPhoto Window.
I just want to take a picture, download it onto my Mac in a folder I can find it in
When you import a pic into iPhoto it will show up in the iPhoto Window. If you want to find use any (or all) of the following: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
delete the photos off my camera,
iPhoto can do this automatically, but it's best if you use your camera to reformat the card. Why? In case there's a problem with the import. How? Read your camera manual.
while still be able to see them in the photo section of my iPhone.
Don't have an iPhone, but isn't that integrated via iTunes? And iPhoto is too

  • Film Roll?

Our daughters teacher gave us a DVD with 2900 pictures the kids had taken over the course of the school year. I imported them into iPhoto and then imported some other pictures after. Now I realize that most of these photos are pictures of carpet, the ceiling, etc that the kids just snapped. In iPhoto 6 I could have gone to View Film Rolls and found that roll and deleted all of the pix in one fell swoop. Now in iPhoto 08 there doesn't appear any way to easily deleted these pix since they are split into a myriad of events over the span of an entire school year. And since some were taken at a time I took pix with my own camera I suspect that some of my pix are in those events so I can't just go through and delete events. Any helpful ideas?

Thanks. Good to know. Still no easy way to find just those pictures because they are spread over many days, an entire school year in fact. I can't find them in one event. And since I've imported more recent pictures the "Last Import" view doesn't do me any good. In iPhoto 06 could just look for the film roll and see all of them and easily delete the bad photos. Same thing when downloading pix from a friend who may have taken some good pix at an event and you find the time or date is off. If you were in iPhoto 6 just look for the film roll and correct them. In iPhoto 08 no easy way to find only those photos imported from that camera.
APPLE, PLEASE BRING BACK FILM ROLLS! They are different AND more useful than events. At least to this user.

  • With icloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from camera roll. I run an older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. Can I transfer pics from i stream to camera roll to allow a non-icloud back up to my PPC? Precious photos are close to 30 day cut-off

With i cloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from Camera Roll to make space knowing I would have them backed up on icloud via Photo Stream. I now find that my older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. I have an ipad3 too, which of course does. I want to copy photos from Photo Stream back to Camera Roll on the phone so that I can back up "old school" to iphoto on my ancient mac. The controls seem to suggest that as an option but when I select multiple photos in Photo Stream and select "Save to Camera Roll" the photos do not appear on Camera Roll as expected. I am running close to the 30 day limit and do not want to lose hundreds of precious photos (or have to email them to myself individually). Can the ipad3 help at all? Any ideas good people? Dan

If only it were that easy Winston. I connect with a USB cable, iphoto opens and I can only see the photos in Camera Roll, not Photo Stream. There does not seem to be a way of aceessing other files in the phone from iphoto and, as in my initial message, I can not transfer the photos to Camera Roll on the phone. My iphone and ipad software is up to date, but my iphoto is '08 version 7.1.5 with my mac running 10.5.8 which is the best I can do on the PPC without messing everything up.  I dont have the dough for a new mac or I would have gone for that option...am I stuck?

  • Film ROLLS have vanished

I am using iphoto 6. Normally each set of new of pix I upload would sit in its own roll but a few days ago all the rolls spontaneously vanished except for one (roll 60) I don't think I have lost any photos (over 1000 of them) but they are all now sitting in "roll 60" in a complete jumble. I have of course tried going to: view> film rolls and also view>sort photos> by film rolls. but with no success ...Any ideas anyone??

  • Iphoto slow problem - photos are organised in folders not film rolls

I'm suffering from the iphoto slow problem and have been trying to find a way to stop iphoto from loading all the photos every time.
My photos are arranged in folders, so I don't seem to have the option to stop the photos being loaded by film roll.
Does anyone have any other ideas ?

I'm not sure what that means. Whether you have albums or not, iPhoto still considers a single import batch as a roll. If the rolls are not collapsed, then everytime you launch iPhoto, it assumes you want to be able to see your entire library, and it goes about the job of making all the thumbnails available.

  • Epson Stylus Photo 2200--Roll Paper function not found

After I reset my printer function for another problem, I lost my ability to print on Roll Paper altogether. The other fuctions that go along with the Stylus Photo 2200 driver are not made available.  I cannot print my panoramas.  I have gone around and around and around with Epson who finally seemingly gave up.
When Stylus Photo 2200 is listed as the printer only Epson (SP2200) comes up as a companion printer.  No matter what I do, and I have done everything from dumping everything Epson and starting completely over to every thing Epson suggested.
It seems the menu Printer Setup Utility has changed and when the printer is listed, it only offers only "Printer Model" that stays greyed out instead of "Page Setup" which was what gave me the functions I needed to add in the past .  Is there a way to revert back to the old Printer Setup Utility?  Using the Epson Printer Utility doesn't work because, although it shows the printer driver, it offers no way to add the Roll Paper function.  I hope this makes sense and that someone can figure this out!  Thanks

  • IPhoto found orphaned photos... but lost all date info!

Upon upgrading to iPhoto 6, iPhoto wouldn't find all of the photos in the library so I held option + command when launching the app and chose the "recover orphaned photos" option. iPhoto found all the photos, but moved them from their date-specific folders into one giant folder dating back to Dec 31, 2000!! None of the photos are that old. The photo files themselves retain the date information -- is there anyway to restore the proper dates in the iPhoto database so that I can view them chronologically once again??? Right now it's a real mess, please help!! Thanks!

    Adam:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If they photos have correct EXIF capture dates they should show up correctly in the date calendars at the bottom of the Source window. If not, try exporting a few to the desktop and re-importing. See if the they now display correctly date wise. However, the new rolls will probably show the most current modified date of the batch.

  • "View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

"View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

Since you're using the term Rolls you must be running iPhoto 6 or earlier. For future problems be sure you post in the iPhoto 6 or forum.
For this problem the View File rolls will only Be sure you're clicked on the Library. That menu item is not available in an album or other item. If you have clicked the library icon first and it's still grayed out close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and then try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
