OS 10.1.5 to OS 10.4

I own an iBook (clamshell) with Firewire. It has a 366 MHz G3 processor, 320 MB RAM, and 10 GB HD.
Currently I am using OS 10.1.5 and occasionally reboot into OS 9. Can I run OS 10.4 on this system and will it run decently? Some have told me to only consider OS 10.2 or 10.3.
If I upgrade the OS I am considering increasing the RAM to 576 MB and the HD to 40 GB. Does this make a difference in your answer? Would it be better to use an external HD or change out the internal HD?
I would like to continue to use this laptop, but maybe it just doesn't have the processor horsepower to run upgrades of OS X.
Thank you.

Yes, you can run Tiger on that model. There are some caveats. Tiger requires a minimum of 256 MBs of installed RAM, however practically you need at least 512 MBs. This is also true of Panther although Panther requires only a minimum of 128 MBs of RAM. Your 10 GB hard drive is not large enough for OS X and OS 9. Panther and Tiger require at least 10 GBs of space at a minimum. Tiger will require at least 6-8 GBs free during installation. Panther requires about 4-6 GBs free during installation.
From a speed point of view your computer does not really have the horsepower for OS X (any version.) It doesn't have a fast enough processor and the video capabilities are unsuited to OS X which puts tremendous stress on the graphic systems.
Rather than spending more money on expansion I would give serious thought to purchasing a new model more suited to using OS X.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.
