OS 10.2.8 and new base station problem

I cannot get my PowerBook g4 running 10.2.8 to join my airport network. I can't run the cd to update the software because it requires 10.3
Does anyone know how i can make this work?

gjmiller4, Welcome to the discussion area!
Is your AirPort network using WPA wireless encryption? If so, you must change it to 128 bit WEP or upgrade your PowerBook to OS 10.3.
I can't run the cd to update the software because it requires 10.3
What software? All the PowerBook software (including AirPort software) will be updated if you all apply all of the updates indicated in Software Update.

i have an airport extreme attached to cable, then one airport express to extend the range. when i try to add an additional airport express to extend range in another area of house, can't get it to work. utility says it has found a new base station and asks if i want to use it. if i click yes, then the old setup is disabled.

Ok, thanks for clarifying which models you have. Please see the following Apple Support article on how to configure these older base stations for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • Unable to set up my Time capsule as router and wifi base station

I am new to the mac world and purchased a time capsule to act as my router and wifi base station. I asked when i purchased the TC if i needed anything other than the adsl filter i have for broadband and was told no. However I cannot get the TC to talk to the internet or even see the connection. Did i infact need a modem between the adsl filter and the tc? if not what cable do i need from the adsl filter and the tc as the one that fits my current router and works has a small modem jac not an ethernet jack?

  • Headaches with my new base station.

My new Airport Extreme 802.11N is being very strange. I need help. I've wasted 6 hours on it!!:)
To start with. My ISP requires a pppoe connection. So, with the new base station I plugged directly into the wan port from there access point (a poe injector that goes to the wireless antenna)
I set up the PPPOE settings through the automated wizard and have it on share a single IP address. It connects to the server and the time box comes up in my menu bar with how long it has been connected. Try going somewhere and it just says connecting and never goes anywhere. Any suggestions?
At this time the airport is in bridge mode, I can log in and internet works fine. LAN works fine. Problem. Only one computer at a time can log directly online. I need everyone connected.
I really need some help!! I would think that if it works in bridge mode. I should theoretically be able to then switch that to share the connection and everyone could use it? I'm stumped:(

I am here for the very same reason! We have spent way too much time on this thing!
I had it backing up yesterday and now Time Machine says it has nowhere to back up and wont configure the settings!
    I am way beyond frustrated.

  • Utility doesn't 'see' new base station...hardward problem??

I just 'upgraded' to the 802.11n Extreme and the amber light flashes but when I open the utility (updated, yes) it simply doesn't SHOW my new base station. Its not my DSL, my ethernet cable, etc., because when I simply switch the ethernet cable back to my 'old' 802.11g Extreme it pops right up on my utility list of available airports! ONLY variable is the new airport. Have unplugged several times.
    Do I have defective HARDWARE?

I ran into a similar problem with a friend's new AEBSn. He couldn't connect to it wirelessly nor wired. To make sure that's his AEBSn was not at fault, I brought my MacBook and tried to connect to it. No luck in wirelessly connecting to the AEBSn. Same thing went with trying with ethernet attached. I changed my Network Preferences to "Automatic" and it finally worked.
So, make sure that your Mac is set to "Automatic" in Network Preferences.
    Hopefully that helps.

  • Where has my airport utility window gone ? when I double click on the icon all I get is an image of a globe and a base station with no options to make changes in my airport extreme.

Where has my airport utility window gone? When I double click on the airport utility icon all I get is a picture of a globe and a base station with no further  options available to modify my airport extreme.

Sorry, you lost me on that last post.
    Let's start over again.
Open AirPort Utility on your Mac
Are you asked for a password at this point?  If yes, enter the base station or device password that you used when you originally set up the AirPort router. Depending when you did this originally, you might have been given an option to use the same password as the wireless network. If you were not, then you have a separate password for the base station.
You need that password to be able to access the settings for the AirPort router in AirPort Utility.
If you see a window listing basic information, click Edit in the upper right corner of the window.
If you are asked for a password, you must enter the device password or base station password that you established when you first set up the AirPort router as explained above.
If you forgot the password, a Soft Reset will allow you to go in and reset the base station password.  Might be a good idea to write down that password.
If you are still stuck, then the only option that you have at this point is to perform a Hard Reset to return the settings to factory defaults and then set up the AirPort router again.
If you prefer, you can also do a Factory Default Reset. It's the same as a Hard Reset except for the timing of holding in the reset button.

  • Rescan base station problem

I have a new Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n) and it works great. I also have an Airport Express which I configured earlier when my computer "found it."
Both the Extreme Base Station and the Airport Express have green lights and I'm connected to the Internet (through the Extreme) but when I scan for base stations my computer cannot seem to find my Airport Express even though the light's on and it's solid green.
I can't understand why my system doesn't find the Express - I'm only a few feet away from the thing and my base station is two floors down in the basement and my computer has no trouble finding that.
My Internet is fast and working well, but it's driving me nuts trying to figure out why Rescan doesn't find my Express. I'd like to set up the Express to use AirTunes. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

    Hi Rachel!
That certainly sounds like the problem that the factory default reset is meant to solve. A factory default reset erases the "profiles" - all memory of contacts with computers and other base stations. That'll give you a completely fresh start, just as if it were new. While "factory default reset" may sound dramatic, it's actually quite simple, since it won't change the firmware of the Express, or the AirPort software on your computers. You should be back to normal in a few minutes:)
Refer to the last section "How to perform a factory default reset" on this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
You'll know that a factory default reset has successfully occurred when, without even connecting it to anything, other than plugging into an electrical receptacle to perform the reset, the default name of the Express (Apple Network ____ ) then shows in your menu bar's AirPort icon.

The Firefox icon is the default feature for Windows Vista and 7 only, it does not apply to Windows XP users.
To have the Firefox icon instead of the Menu Bar:
View > Toolbars and UNCHECK the Menu Bar.
After that, click on the Firefox icon and you'll have the Menu Bar appear again.

  • IMac doesn't detect the base station correctly (with new base station)

I have a brand new Airport Express. I'm trying to connect to my iMac G5. Everything works fine in the start up with getting the green light on the Express base station. But, my iMac doesn't "connect" with the base station.
I try the "Airport Setup Assistant" and get a window that says "No new Airport networks were found."
I look at the "pie" at the top of the iMac screen. It has the white and black stripes on it. I click it and find "Apple Network e3fec9" and select it. The signal level shown has all blue buttons. That window also reports "Status: Connected to 'Apple Network e3fec9'" and "Base Station ID:00:19:E3:E3:FE:C9". That's what makes me think that my problem must be in the iMac and not the base station.
I had also tried my Dell laptop (from work) and found that it found the internet network. It detected the "local host" and "Apple Network" and the signal strength was very good (~90% or so). The only problem was that the laptop thought it needed to recreate an IP address before it could connect to the internet. I didn't do that, since I saw it was detecting the network.
Please help. Why should this be so hard?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   none

I'm confused. You say you're connected to "Apple Network e3fec9", and you're having trouble connecting your iMac? It sounds like you've managed to connect to your Airport Base Station.
Have you configured the Internet settings for the base station? Try this:
    1. Launch Airport Admin Utility (in /Applications/Utilities/) select "Apple Network e3fec9" and click Configure.
    2. Under the Airport tab, give the base station a name, click the Base Station Options… button, and make sure Enable Ethernet Port is checked.
    3. Select Create a Wireless Network (Home Router) if it isn't already selected, give your network a name, and check Create a closed network
4.Click the Wireless Security button and set it to WPA Personal, and enter a password.
    5. Under the Internet tab, set Connect Using: to Ethernet, and in the Configure dropdown, select Using DHCP
    6. Click the Access Control tab and click the plus button on the right side of the window. In the panel that pops up, click the This Computer button.
    7. Click Update
I'm hoping it's something simple, like Enable Ethernet Port wasn't checked or something, and not something more serious.
    Hope it helps.

  • I want to set up a roaming network. I have directions. I have an extreme set up and working.  I need to add an express.   When I open airport utility I get the internet pic of internet and the base station.  How do a get to the setting screens?

Directions require that I change settings on the base station on the screen that interent connection, TCP/IP DHCP NAT how do I get to that screen through airport utility.
Then I need to for my express to get to the screen the screen for wireless.
This has changed since last time I did this.
How do I get to the screens.

Your existing Extreme might already be configured in Bridge Mode. As long as the Extreme is working now, do not change any settings on the Extreme.
Apple incorrectly assumes that all users are connecting to a simple modem when most users are connecting to gateway devices....combination modem/routers.
You probably are as well and Bridge Mode would be the correct setting when connecting to that type of device.

  • Moving between Extreme Base Station and Express Base Stations with Mac & PC

I just bought an Airport Express and connected it as an extension to my Airport Extreme Base station. All firmware has been updated as of today. I have things configured such that the Extreme is WEP but allowing for extension and the Express is working. My Macbook appears to be connecting to the Express now but it seems like I have to use the Utility to select either the Express or Extreme base station manually as opposed to having it just go to the strongest source automatically. Maybe I made an assumption that it worked like an access point. Moreover, the laptop PCs in the house are not making the jump to the Express at all. I can install the Utility on one of them and probably manually make the change but the other is a Corporate PC that is 'locked down.' And of course that is the one that I want to be able to use around the house.
    Does anyone know if:
    1. There is an ability to bounce between the Extreme and Express like access points on the Mac and the PC
    2. Is there a way to configure a PC to use the Express or the Extreme without the Utility (i.e., if I setup the Express with a different Network name)
The key issue is that I do not have the ability to run an ethernet between the two base stations - they can only connect wirelessly.
    Thanks for your help!

cosmomurphy, Welcome to the discussion area!
Do you have the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) configured as a WDS main and the AirPort Express (AX) as a WDS remote?
Or are they both 802.11n capable and the AEBS is configured to have the extend network feature is enabled and the AX configured to act as an extension?
In either of those cases, they are working together as one big wireless network. In that situation, any client will connect to the base station which appears to be the "best" connection for them.
There is no need to install the AirPort Utility on any device. Any device with 802.11b/g/n wireless ability can connect to the network.

  • Sky and Airport Base Station setup

    Hi,
I seem to be having all kinds of issues with my Wireless network setup.  So much so that I'm going insane with it all.
Now I don't pretend to be an expert in networking issues, I'm a consumer and I am a designer - I don't do technical stuff.  Hence why I am asking the question here.
But I am a good listener, and I'm hoping to learn how to do this the right way.
    Ok.
I have a router that came with my Sky Broadband, and I have an Airport Base Station which I connect to my Sky Router and broadcast a network from the Airport.
Problem is I think I've messed up settings and it's just on an unbelievable go-slow.
Rather than me try and detail all my settings, what are the ideal settings for something like this?
I'm getting less than 1mb download speeds, when I should be getting closer to 7.
I've got iStumbler installed and i've got like 40% signal with 12% noise.
Now I've just noticed my Airport Base Station is showing a warning icon and that the device is not found.
    Help.

Timothy, you're right... the change to 10.4.8 has had us in "Airport ****" ever since the update. Whenever the PB can't find the Airport Extreme (more than 1/2 the time), we open "Network" in "System Preferences" and it's trying to use a 10.xxx address, instead of the 192.xxx or 168.xxx that it should be using.
Our work-around has been to click the "Configure" Button in the "Network" window and then click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button. This results in a change to the address... to a 192.xxx address, as it should be.
Your post got me to thinking, so I went into the "Airport Admin Utility", selected our Airport Extreme Base Station, and clicked on the "Configure" icon. When I went to the third tab (Network) I saw the "Share a single IP address" was set to use a 10.xxx address! What? So, I changed it to use a 192.xxx since there is no 168.xxx option. I have a feeling this may solve our problem...

  • Macbook wireless and Cisco base station causes kernel panics

So my company uses Macbooks and Cisco wireless base stations. For some reason, when they use bother ethernet, and the wireless, the Macbook will kernel panic for no apparent reason. So since we have a fast wired network, I have been advising those Macbook users to turn off wireless and use the wired network. Wouldn't you know, the kernel panics go away. Is anyone aware of an issue with the wireless chipset in the Macbooks and the wireless chipsets in the Ciscos not liking to play with one another? I know it's the wireless in the Macbooks as if I use any other wireless base station from Apple or Linksys, the issue is not there. I should also mention that when people use those Macbooks on the wireless every once in a while, they get an access control list error. We do not have ACLs for our wireless. Our PowerBooks and iBooks do not exhibit any of these issues on the same network, so we know it is an issue with Intel based Macs. Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem at college (they use Cisco equipment). On most of the campus everything is fine, but in the area near my classes (typically), wireless causes the mac to panic.
I asked at IT, and came back more confused (apparently, they use the same model WAPs throughout the college, so they couldn't see why one particular WAP would cause this. They guessed it was to do with the huge amount of traffic that particular WAP gets, with it being in the Computing department and all).

  • Nintendo DS and AirPort base station

I have a Nintendo DS gaming console that connects to other consoles via WiFi. I also have a game of which I have the option of playing against other people over broadband internet. I was wondering if maybe I could connect to the internet with my DS if I had an AirPort base station?
If it would indeed work, great. I wouldn't have to buy anything else. If not, I can always drop in to a local "hot spot."

  • Airport Extreme Gigabit Base Station problem

Today when I tried to get on the internet, my MacBook Pro would not recognize my AEBS. It cannot find it in the AirPort Utility or when I type the name of my network and password into Airport from the Menu Bar. My PowerBook is running fine on the same network. It recognizes and joins the network when it wakes from sleep and it sees the AEBS in Airport Utility.
Last week my MacBook Pro experienced a kernel panic while using Safari over a different wireless network. My best guess is that I may have a bad Airport Express card... is there any way to run a test on it to find out?
Also, my MBP never remembers my networks that I visit requently.... all of them are hidden networks and I have to retype the network and password every time I visit that same network. This is not the case with my PowerBook... and I have no clue why.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Computer Stats:
    PowerBook G4, 1.67 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 10.4.10
MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 10.4.9
Just ask if you need any more info about my computers or about my AEBS.

    Hi K,
I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I was beginning to think that I made a mistake in purchasing the Airport Extreme BS (Gig). Since our jobs are printing perfectly when the printer is directly attached to our macs running Leopard, I have to assume this is a wireless issue. Currently, my Extreme Station is configured to run at 5 GHz and backward compatible with the other devices. Unfortunately, because my Powerbook is the only one that can take advantage of the 5GHz range, the base station has to allow for 2.4 GHz as well, and I'm beginning to think this is the culprit but I guess we have no choice. Because the 2.4 range is quite crowded (my cordless phone runs at that frequency), I imagine this might be what's causing the computer and base station to be confused. I hope Apple can fix this and make it more rubust. Incidentally, there is a toggle option in the Airport Utility where it does allow for more "robustness" but warns that this could slow down the overall performance of the network. I tried, but I'm still having the same sort of printer issue as you described. What do you think?
