OS 10.2 / Powerbook G4 - install CD not recognised

Hi all,
I hope you can help. A colleague has brought in her Powerbook G4 to see if I can install 10.2 for her. The Install CD was stuck in the drive. At startup, the old Mac icon appears, as does the bouncing beachball of doom. Not much happens at all, although the drive spins.
I should point out at this point that this machine looks like it's been through a threshing machine - apparently at one point it was rolling around in the back of a car with a spare tyre whilst the car was being driven rather, er, enthusiasically. However, the machine itself has functioned just fine ofr several years before the attempted upgrade.
I've fsck'ed, reset the PRAM and tried target disk mode, and the HD appears to be fine. As far as I can tell, the OS itself is a bit of a state.
I've tried two different external USB CD drives, the internal drive and two different copies of 10.2, to no avail. Variously, I get a hang when booting with the option key down, the Prohibited sign and a few other variations. I've not been able to get the machine to boot into anything other than single user mode. Does anyone have any suggestions? As I said, I can view the filesystem when the machine is in target disk mode using my Macbook, and the install disks appear to be fine when tried in that system, too.

If this is an 867 MHz/1 GHz version it requires 10.2.1 or 10.2.3. Earlier models can use 10.1 or higher. If it's the first Gigabit model (500 and 667 MHz) then it requires a firmware update.
You cannot boot the computer from an external USB drive - only Firewire. Be sure you have a retail copy of Jaguar - the CD has the Jaguar "spotted pelt" label. If the disc you have has a gray OEM label then it's probably not going to be usable unless it's the disc that came originally with the computer. This would be unlikely inasmuch as you say the version you have is 10.2. If the disc has the word "Upgrade" on it you can only use it if a prior version of OS X is already installed.
The computer meets the minimum requirements for hardware. The hard drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended and Jaguar requires about 4 GBs of free space during installation.
It's possible the installer disc you have is defective, scratched, or dirty making it unreadable or the computer's optical drive is defective or out of alignment.

  • PowerBook G3 Wallstreet does not recognise battery - what could cause this?

I have recently been trying to revive an old PowerBook Wallstreet G3 that has sat in a cupboard for 5 years.  Initially, whilst it did boot on AC, it did not see either old battery in either bay and would not keep the date.  I replaced the re-chargeable (PRAM) battery and it will now keep the date but still does not see either battery.  I ordered a new battery which arrived today.  It to is not seen and so cannot charge.
I have re- set the PMU and tried battery re-set 2.0. The computer was having re-charge problems before I put it away. It would see the batteries but would only re-charge when sleeping.  I can believe that the old batteries are shot but would have expected the new one to be ok.  The RH media bay will take a DVD drive and does see it when installed.
Any ideas as to what is causing the problem?  What boards might I replace to try to fix it.  Having done the PRAM battery replacement I am happy to take it appart.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Device drivers not installing - therefore not recognised by iTunes

    Hi,
Desperately seeking some help with this. Purchased a new iPad 2 couple of weeks ago.
Plugged into laptop to sync with iTunes (already have an iPhone so just wanted to sync some of my content to new device)
The device didnt materialise in iTunes. Now since the new update I hadn't upadated iTunes to version 11.01 or my iPhone to iOS 6 - with the ipad already operating on iOS6 I thought this might have been due to iTunes not being up to date.
So tried to update iTunes - here the problems began.
I cant even remember what happened first, but the update didnt work, and after searching these forums I gathered the safest thing to do was to uninstall iTunes and quicktime and re-install.
I hadn't researched in enough detail to realise about all the other programmes that needed uninstalling as well as the bits that the windows uninstal leaves behind in the registry.
Eventually (took ages) I managed to get around this using Revo uninstaller and completely uninstalled everything and succesfully re-installed iTunes.
It appeared to work fine, update succesful etc..
Then plugged in the iPad and to my dismay still no joy.
After monitoring 'the device driver software is not correctly installed'.
I have scoured these forums for this problem and I think I have tried everything and still no luck at all.
I have re-installed itunes (again - 3 times since the first succesful re-install)
I have run through the iPad troubleshooting assisstant.
I have attempted using device manager to point the system to the driver in Program Files - this just times out, attempted using MSCONFIG to identify any conflicts and no joy.
Attemped launching in another user account on the computer with Admin priveleges - nothing works.
Have obvously tried all USB ports, old and new cables, resetting device etc
Final idea was a warning code Ive had come up upon launch of iTunes after updating:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
I reinstalled the driver for this using regedit but still nothing.
Have also just checked and the system doesn't recognise my iPhone either, which has been synced with this computer hundreds of times in the past.
The decvices do not appear in computer, only device manager with their name (i.e. IPad) with a question mark/warning sign next to it.
Im using windows 7, 64 bit.
Can anyone help, please - before these nice Apple products get thrown from the window - swiflty follwed by my laptop - and I become a technology free monk?
Apologies if re-posting but I cant find anything identical or anything similar that solves the problem and have had enough of it now!!
Only option I can think of is a complete windows reboot which I really don't want to do - especially as I suspect the problem is to do with the Apple software on my PC (which is why Ive posted in iTunes as opposed to iPad)?
Any assistance greatly appreciated, happy to provide more info if helps?
    Many thanks

Anyone able to help with this?

  • Installed Flash not recognised - Windows XP & Mozilla 27.0

I've installed Flash player a few times onto my XP computer using Mozilla 27.0 ..... and each time when I try to play YouTube and other videos ... it's not detected - it says "...Adobe Flash... is required for video playback".
It's showing up as installed on the Add/Remove software function,  however there isn't even a shortcut to use it which seems strange.
I've searched through the forum and via google and can't find any answers.
Hope someone can help ........ thanks
PS -  my IE8  isn't even able to play videos either  and there's no IE  'add on' causing this problem       (but is different software required to play IE? ..... )

Give ti a clean install of everything:
    Download the following:
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
    Flash Player Uninstaller
    Also, download these:
    Shockwave Player Uninstaller
Shockwave Player 12 FULL installer (Other browsers)
You'll need to install Shockwave with the FULL installer for IE too, but there isn't a direct download for it. You'll need to go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ using IE AFTER everything else is done.
Save all the files and close your browser.
Run the uninstallers first (both of them)
    Go to: C/Windows/System32
    Delete the Macromed folder.
Open your Registry Editor (Start>Run or press the Windows key + R and type 'regedit' [minus the quotes] and click OK)
In the Registry Editor, go to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE
Delete the Macromedia folder (Right click and choose "Delete").
    Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and delete the Macromedia folder there too.
Close the Registry Editor and empty your recycle bin.
Run the Flash Player installers, and then the Shockwave FULL installer you downloaded.
Lastly, open IE and go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ to download and install the Shockwave FULL installer for ActiveX (IE).

I have installed about 6 times now and it never works! I have a mac version 10.6.8. Please help me, I am so frustrated.

I had a similar problem just now and what worked for me was i archived a email in MS outlook using the Adopbe PDF dropdown menu and then I had full access to X Pro again.

  • Ipod nano 1st & 2nd not recognised on PowerBook

    hello
i'm sure something like this post is here somewhere. but there are just too many to read through.
    here is my dilemma.
i have just bought an ipod nano 1st gen & a 2nd gen. both work fine on my work computer (brand new MacBook). but when i plug them into my personal PowerBook G4, they are not recognised. my PB is running osx 10.4 and my itunes is up-to-date (exactly the same version as my MB.
i have tried both USB ports and nothing. it looks like its charging, but thats it. the screen with "do not disconnect" does not appear.
    any ideas anyone?
i even tried them both on an old ibook - they work just fine.
    cheers

    hello
i have tried restarting - no luck. i have tried different cable - no luck.
i plugged in a high-speed thumb drive, this worked. i opened system profiler and my usb saw that it was a high speed device.

  • External harddrive not recognised

Hi.. im not sure if this is the correct forum, but i'll give it a shot. I have a hard drive I used in a windows pc. I recently bought a mac compatible external usb hdd casing and fitted the hard drive. But when I connect to my powerbook g4, it is not recognised by mac. Its shows up as connected in disk utility but its not mapped.... any help please????

Because USB isn't bootable, most people stick to Oxford 911+ which has FW400 and USB2 support.
You can find "Mac-compatible FireWire" for $38 on Amazon or just head to
http://www.macsales.com and see what is in the sales specials.
Also, you may want to remove the partition table while connected to PC, or try booting from Tiger DVD and wipe the drive.

  • To re-install or not, that is the question?

I have an early 2006 intel iMac with OSX 10.4.11. Little things are starting to act up, but nothing really major. IChat doesn't work properly, I lose tunes in iTunes, startup sound went on the fritz and the little beacon on the front right hand side is getting dimmer. I used to have an old Mac Powerbook 180 (1993) and periodically, I'd re-install the system from all of the floppy discs and it would work perfectly and I'd never lose any data. Sometimes, I wish I still had it. Is it a totally different world now? Can I take the start up CD that came with the iMac, place it in the slot and do a total re-install? What would happen and is this a plausible idea? Or,,, should I just leave well enough alone? I feel like I just need to do a clean up of the system. Thanks!!!

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Issue with ARD 3.0 not pushing out Installs, Says its installing but not

Issue with ARD 3.0 not pushing out Installs, Says its installing but not
Has anyone seen this. It seems to happen with ARD 3, have not seen this in ARD 2.
I go to the Install Packages on Target Computers, put in: 10.4.7 Combo (for the correct CPU, PPC or Intel), security updates, QT 7.1.2, etc.
Push it to Macs I can connect to, observe and control.
The progress bar copies the files (in some instances it does not) and then it just hangs there, bar does not move, Installs never finish, not good, very odd.

Is it the same clients that have the problem every time? Are those clients doing anything cpu intensive? Have you tried rebooting the affected clients?
Maybe try a smaller package on those clients.

  • Installed but not found on computer

I've successfully installed the latest 10.1 for my 64-bit laptop with Windows 7.  A check by Adobe confirms that it was properly installed, and that I have the correct version for my computer.
AND YET, there is no icon for it anywhere, it doesn't come up on my list of Programs, when I enter "Adobe Flash Player" in the search bar it shows no such program, and when I try to play a FLV file, it won't give me Flash Player as an option. So..... I have it on my computer, but I apparently am not allowed to see it or access it?
I've uninstalled and re-installed several times, and cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is.  Any help for this maddening situation?

    Hi,
Yes, I read his comments and I made sure Shockwave Flash Object was enabled in IE as he suggested. I am trying to make a flip book. One of the posts here in the forum said to make a SWF file, which I did. But now I can't figure out how to do anything with it. I thought Flash Reader was the right program to look at it, but maybe I'm wrong? Maybe I need Flash itself? The flip book thing has me pretty frustrated and confused. All the sites and software I've tried are poor quality. I was hoping I could figure out how to do it through Adobe to get better quality.

Re: Installed but not found on computer
Hi, Flash Player is a browser plugin, not a stand alone Player. You should have Shockwave Flash Object in add ons in IE and make sure it is enabled.
Your Flash files are in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
You may want the Adobe Media Player:http://www.adobe.com/products/mediaplayer/
    Hope that helps,

  • [SOLVED] ABS - nasm - install file (nasm.install) does not exist

I was attempting to build the nasm package and I encountered the following error:
==> ERROR: install file (nasm.install) does not exist.
When reviewing the PKGBUILD file there was a line in the header:
    install=nasm.install
ArchWiki (PKGBUILD) explains the install directive
The name of the .install script to be included in the package. pacman has the ability to store and execute a package-specific script when it installs, removes or upgrades a package. The script contains the following functions which run at different times
I removed the install= line and everything appeared to work.  My question is... does anyone know if the install script it was expecting to find did anything special that is going to cause me grief going forward?
    Thx

I figured out what I did wrong.   I copied only the PKGBUILD file out of /var/abs/extra/nasm folder ..  the nasm.install was still in the folder.
Explains why I couldn't find the answer on Google.

You can move apps around in iOS 7 the same as iOS 6. Press an app icon until you see it wiggle; then drag it to where ever you want it to be. Drag it onto another app to create a folder with the two apps. Tap the Home button to stop the wiggle.
