OS 10.3.8 don't boot in my iMac 266 MHz!

Hi.
I just got a green 266MHz iMac with 64MB Ram. The CD is not working! I have installed 10.3.8 from my Cube on the iMac:s HD fitted in a FireWire case. The HD is 6GB. The 266MHz iMac don't boot, only a map with a questionmark sign up! The same HD boot in a iMac Snow 500MHz.
I have made the Firmeware 1.2 uppgrade.
What's the problem?
Hans
Cube G4, 1.2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't know that it would keep you from booting, but the system requirements for panther state a minimum of 128MB RAM:
Requirements for Mac OS X 10.3
Mac OS X 10.3 works with these Macintosh computers:
* Power Mac G5 (all models)
* Power Mac G4 or Macintosh Server G4 (all models)
* Power Macintosh G3 or Macintosh Server G3 that have built-in USB ports
* iMac (all models)
* iBook (all models)
* PowerBook G4 (all models)
* PowerBook G3 (Bronze Keyboard models only)
Additionally, the computer should have:
* 128 MB RAM (memory)
* At least 1.5 GB free hard disk space
Note: For Mac OS X 10.2 or later, 3.0 GB is the recommended minimum. The exact amount required depends on your computer and how you install Mac OS X (default versus custom installation, for example).
* Mac OS 9.1 or later for Classic applications

  • GE60 2PE Don't boot to BIOS, notebook bricked.

Hello, Yesterday night I was watching a youtube show on my netbook, running without power supply only with the battery (I only done this for 3 times in 7 months so I'm not worried about battery being discharged) and I fall sleep. This morning when I waked up, I tried to boot from hibernation to properly shutdown the system but the netbook doesn't boot.
    Things I tried to do:
1º - I tried to power on normally only running from battery. Only power on with blue/orange power light, and a small light from the HDD for 2 seconds nothing happened.
2º - Power off by pressing power button for 4 seconds. I waited 5 mins I plugged in the power adaptor and I tried again with same results, don't boot.
3º - Removed battery and power adaptor, I pressed power button for 60 seconds to discharge (i saw this advice on Youtube). Plugged in only power adaptor and tried to power on. Same results, don't boot.
4º - Removed battery and power adaptor, presed power button for 60 seconds to discharge (). I connected the netbook to my TV with a HDMI cable, plugged in only power adaptor and tried to power on. Same results, don't boot.
    Symptoms:
Power on, power LED in blue color for half second later turns to orange color only, no blinking only the same orange color all the time. The fan starts to spin in normal speed, HDD led blinks for 1-2 seconds and off. The screen is off (no light even on the back cover where the MSI dragon badge is), don't appears MSI logotype, no BIOS mesage or sound, no screen(fully black no backlight) no HDD. Laptop keeps running.
    System info:
    MSI GE60-2PE "Apache Pro",
Geniune Windows 8.0 PRO (My own license not from MSI, and it's 8.0 not 8.1 I don't like to update)
BIOS UEFI in fast boot mode, legacy USB disable. USB Handoff fixes disabled in BIOS, Enabled only boot from HDD/win8. The rest i think it's default settings.
    BIOS: E16GFIMS.529 (previously .528 and .526)
    Motherboard: MS16-GF
EC Firmware: 16GFEMS1.50B (I can't remember if I updated firmwares previously)
    Touchpad Firmware: 03
HDD:Standart WD HDD, no msata drives. No intel RAID.
    DVD: Standart LG DVD.
    RAM: 4Gb Standart Samsung/Hynix? SODIMM + 4Gb GSkill DD3L 1.666Mhz (1.35v) upgraded by myself.
All drivers installed with the exception of the integrated radio switch controller.
Intel HD 4600 - OK (updated 01/2015 from manufacturer)
Nvidia Graphics - OK (updated 12/2014 from manufacturer)
    Intel WiFi/Bluetooth 3160 - OK (updated 01/2015 from manufacturer)
Atheros KillerNIC - OK (Drivers version from MSI DVD)
Elantech Touchpad - OK (updated in 01/2015 from MSI support page)
Intel chipset stuff - OK (update 12/2014 from manufacturer)
Webcam - OK (no drivers installed, work with windows8 deafult drivers)
    Software installed:
Only MSI KLM (keyboard light manager) with also installed a SCM service.
The netbook worked smooth since the begining until today for 7 months (really great hardware). The only thing i suppose that could be a problem with BIOS update (I updated two weeks ago) or EC firmware (I updated 3-4 weeks ago), since I don't worked withour power adaptor from new year, until today.
There's something I could do that I miss? a reset jumper, or reset CMOS button. Or I should ask to RMA to my netbook shop.
PD: I don't like to get a replacement netbook from other RMA user. I want my machine, I know what it's done and how it's done,  I have my stickers in mint condition, I know my battery is well mantained, I have my FAN clean, I have the exterior and screen really clean and without scratches, have all my personal data on HDD. Should be worried about getting someones netbook? I should remove the HDD to avoid my personal data being compromised and I can lose them (i don't have backup)?
Also apologize my english, but the spanish forum looks empty and dead, only see news.

I suppose so, thanks chc for your time reading my issue.
I should contact my shop for RMA.

Well, during the past weekend, the possibility that the bug maybe caused by Firewire devices is dramatically increased. If it's true, the problem effect Snow Leopard in general and not only the iMac.
Yesterday I connect my MacBookPro 2.2 (3GB RAM 10.6.2) to the external devices (one Packard Bell 250GB FW-400 connected to one Lacie 1TB FW-800) because I had to move several files from one disk to the other (procedure that I've started with the iMac and never completed).... well the 4 year old MBP that never had a problem, crashed completely three times!! :O
The first time the spinning ball appeared (same bug behavior as on the iMac), the second time the mouse stopped to move and the last one (I had the screen dimmed) the screen remained black.
I'm really starting to think that something at kernel level that handle firewire devices has some severe issues if some particular conditions happens.

hi Timo, welcome to the forum.
Yes, this sounds like a compatibility issue. However, you can try doing this:
    Get into the BIOS, set the boot sequence priority, put your OS HDD as the 1st boot device;
    or reinstall XP, hit F6 for 3rd party driver, and install the RAID driver, even though you don't plan to install the OS to the RAID drives;
Also, file a ticket to MSI - support.msi.com.tw, ask them to take a look at this issue.
Hi Maesus, thanks for the welcome and your reply
Primary boot device was already set to the OS HDD, and I disabled the others (including "Boot from other devices").
I can try the reinstall of XP, but can only do so without the PCI RAID-controller plugged in, otherwise I'm not able to get beyond the motherboard POST.  (Giving me reason to believe that reinstalling XP will not solve the problem, but couldn't hurt to try).
As for the ticket, I'm not a USA/Canada customer, so I'd have to go by my local European website (in this case via the Dutch support site http://support.msi-computer.nl/). They have this "ingenious" system where I have to select my MSI product, but their list is a bit outdated :( The P35 Platinum isn't listed, with the nice remark "If your product isn't listed, it's probably OEM and MSI doesn't support that"
So any suggestions there? Go for the USA support, but with bogus personal information (regarding address), or send a support request via the Dutch support site, but for another motherboard (Perhaps the 975X Platinum?) with a big heading of **** WARNING: ACTUAL QUESTION ABOUT THE MSI P35 PLATINUM BUT YOUR SUPPORT LIST OF MOTHERBOARDS IS OUTDATED **** ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Timo

  • Install Disk for Snow Leopard will not boot on an iMac 27in

My Install Disk for Snow Leopard will not boot on my iMac 27in. The Apple Logo is the only thing the user will see. The current OS on the system is 10.6.6. Upon placing the Snow Leopard DVD in the system, the DVD players spins for a few seconds and displays the Apple Logo. Nothing happens after 20 minutes.

Yes, it is ridiculous how it is impossible to install Snow Leopard. I have two Snow Leopard DVDs: one that I purchased for a Macbook soon after it's release (10.6.0), and one that came with my iMac (10.6.4). Both of these boot up my Macbook (running 10.6.7) just fine. My SL 10.6.0 DVD mounts onto my iMac (Lion 10.7.0), but you cannot run the install. I attempted to boot from this DVD and got the infinite white screen and Apple logo, as some have reported above. The other SL 10.6.4 DVD will not even mount in Lion, and will not even show up as a bootable drive when I attempt to select it after holding alt/option on reboot.
I created a bootable external drive from SL 10.6.0, attempted boot, same infinite white screen/apple logo.
I created a bootable external drive from SL 10.6.4 on my macbook. I attempted to boot from this drive, and got the white screen of death, except that this time I actually got the loading symbol underneath the Apple logo. After about a minute of attempting to boot, the Apple logo changed to a circle with a diagonal line through it (the "NO!" sign).
I took my iMac to the genius bar. They inserted SL 10.6.0, which would not boot. Then they determined that my computer had to run 10.6.4 and later. So, they restored an image of SL 10.6.4 onto my partition (not an install from an image, but an image of SL already installed). Hurray! Snow Leopard was successfully shoved onto my iMac!
I then deleted a third partition on my hard drive I did not need anymore, which somehow screwed up my SL partition (even though it said "Will not erase partition SL or Macintosh HD). Now I am back at square one, and I guess I need to take my flippin iMac back to Apple for them to do what I should be able to do.
I like Apple, but sheesh do I hate Lion right now.

Yes of course its Photoshop. Cut the person out copy to clipboard paste onto toe brick wall document  and texture the layer using a displacement map for the brick wall. Look for Photoshop tutorials on using a displacement map.

  • Will Leopard CD boot new 24" iMac?

A few months ago I bought my wife a 24" iMac. I have a 24' iMac from the previous generation.
She's been having problems since upgrading to 10.5.7 and we decided to reformat and start over before we install 10.5.8.
This is where the fun starts.
I can't find the install DVDs that came with her iMac, but I do have the ones that came with mine. I also have a retail Leopard DVD to upgrade my PowerBook. None of these will boot the new iMac; it starts, gets to the grey screen and then restarts again/loop. I need to zap the PRAM to get the iMac to start from the HDD.
Is this expected or is there a trick to get the new iMac to boot from the 10.5 retail DVD?
    thanks,
    LArry

The reason it does not work is because Macs can generally boot the version of the OS it came with, or LATER (up to hardware limits), but not earlier.
So if that retail DVD has 10.5.3 on it, and the iMac came with 10.5.6, 10.5.6 is later than 10.5.3. Therefore, the retail 10.5.3 disc will not boot that iMac.
In the case of trying to use your iMac's disc, if it's from a different earlier model line-up, it will not work for the same reason and also because OEM discs usually do not work with a different Mac model, regardless of OS version.
You need to find the original discs that came with that iMac (and keep them in a safe place). Obviously, you need it to reinstall the OS and perform disk maintenance. If you sell the iMac later, you'll get more if you include the original discs. If you can't find them, for a recent Mac model, Apple should be able to replace them for a nominal cost.

I recommend to check www.icloud.com, are your contacts shown there?
If not -> Something might be not set up correctly on you iOS devices.
Also.. Simple but maybe occuring: Contacts -> Preferences -> Accounts -> iCloud is enabled? (Should be by default if you have iCloud setup via the system preferences, but you never know..)

How can I keep iPhoto 09 from opening every time I boot my Intel iMac? I am using OSX 10.6.8

IF it is opening in import mode:
Do you have an external drive or device (iPhone, USB key) plugged into iPhoto?  If so, there are some photo files on it that make iPhoto think it has photos to import.  Remove the device, delete the photos or move the photos to another folder on the device.
If it is not openeing in import mode, it must be in your startup items.  Drag it from there.

I tried to install maverick and now my keyboard keys F10,F11, 7,8,9 on the number pad don't work on my iMac. How do I resolve this?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Imac 266 booting sequence

I have an imac 266 with 160 MByte of memory, 20GB disk with 10.4.2 and the firmware 3.0 f3.
Each time I boot, I enter in the openfirmware prompt.
with printenv I can see the value of the nvram variable boot-command equal to "0 bootr".
When I reset the firmware default with reset-nvram, I have for the value of boot-command : "mac-boot", it's the right value to boot to mac osx 10.4.2.
Now if I enter the command reset-all the imac boots normaly and I have the 10.4.2 desktop.
    OK. Just fine.
If I restart the computer, I enter in the openfirmware prompt and the nvram variable boot-command has a value of "0 bootr".
It seems that somwhere in mac osx a conditional path go to a command writing the nvram with a bad value for the variable boot-command.
    Can anyone help me ?
    Thanks
    Pierre Breuer

The 266 MHz IMacs are incompatible with Mac OSX 10.4.2 you are maybe right, but Mac OSX 10.4.2 runs perfectly on this old timer.
I have also other Mac Computers (macmini, powerbook titanium, imac 400MHz etc ..) and many others computers (sun, PC etc.) and this one is for the fun.
In 1980 I ran unix on a computer with a 8" floppy as swap partition and since this time I have learned that unix is very flexible and programable
I plan to upgrade the memory to 512 MBytes, I have upgraded my disk with a old 20GB 7200 rpm
The 266 MHz is a good configuration for browsing the web and have my email ( and I repeat it works very well for that).
I have just the little problem with the boot sequence and I am shure It may be solved.
    best regards

  • Solaris 10 u6 don't boot after updates installl (May 11)

    Hi:
Yesterday at nigth I ran updatemanager and installed several updates.
Then said to reboot in the updatemanager checkbox.
After that, at boot started to apear a fast message saying on several lines something about something
    wrong with " ... IPv4 ...", could't get more on those messages.
Then it looped back to boot.
Booted on failsafe mode, and selected to synchronize the boot archive (which the system offered on login).
After that the normal boot just loop back to grub.
Looking into logs I found that there was a failure installing patch 139556-09.
Found the ".jar" under /a/var/sadm/spool, and tried to install it from failsafe mode,
without success. The best I got ended in a message that it could not create a path
    which mentioned sometrhing like "/.Failsafe .../" .
As far as I can remember there was 2 patches that required reboot.
But there was several other, and I really don't know which is "responsible"
for not allowing the system to boot.
It is my home PC, so I can't open a service request.
    Can somebody help me?
    Thanks
    Pablo

Hi, thanks everybody for the interest.
The problem is still unsolved but got some progress.
To boot on single user was of no use, having 'failsafe'.
First thing tried was to remove the patches wwith "patchrm <patch_number>".
I had to fake some paths with links because root was now under /a.
Well that did an incomplete job on removing the patches.
That was before mdinaz iluminated me with the '-R /a' option.
At this point the boot still looped.
Then tried again with 'patchrm -R /a <patch_number>'.
That enebled to complete the jobs for some of the patches.
By then the boot still looped.
Having nothing better to do I installed the patch that originaly failed (139556-09).
Which happened to be a mega-patch with kernel upgrade.
After that the boot worked (yeah!), ... but ...
SMF did not. Apparently one of the patches I uninstalled (140900-01 if I remember well)
was a modification on SMF manifests.
So I think that the updated kernel can't read the SMF manifests.
Then the machine is up, but almost nothing works, no network, no automount of cdrom or USB drives, no X Windows.
But the data is still there :)
Again, beacause I have no official support I cannot download the patches from SunSolve.
Then I found that the Sol 10 u7 is already on the street.
So my plan is, unless I can get the patches, I will try to live Upgrade to update 7.
    Those are the news.
    Thanks to everybody again.
    Regards
    Pablo
