OS 10.4.10 Hangs, Spinning wheel, Wont startup, kernel panic
I have had all of these things happen in the last couple of days. The most recent update is the only system change that has occured. I have tried Disk utility (from within OS and off recover disks). Recover disk utility says "reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data" and invalid leaf record count, it should be 16 instead of 33". It says one HFS volume repaired one volume could not be repaired. Both quick and long hardware test report pass.
I am about to try fsck.
Any suggestions before I try recovery reinstall? BTW, I upgraded from 10.3.9. Do I have to to recover to 10.3.9 before returning to 10.4?
I had to run fsck twice to get a disk OK response. I then ran Disk Utility/repair disk from the recovery disk and I still get 1 HFS volume repaired and 1 volume could not be repaired. OS X is up and running for the time being, it has worked like this for a day and then gone unstable.
Ant thoughts?

I am a novice at all of this, so please don't shout at me. This all started after a message about no more room available on my startup disc, and there appears that there is nothing in the statrup folder. I don't know how to correct that. I attempted to access the Systems Preferences to reset the sleep options, without success. I even utilized the OSX installation disc to run the Apple Hardware Test (Extended Testing). The Error Message that resulted is Error Code 4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0). I've already tested and repaired the Permissions as well. I'm open to any suggestions on how to correct all of this. The spinning beachball appears everytime I try to access anything on my screen.
The memory is 232.4GB capacity, 170.0 GB Available, 57.4 GB used.
My protection coverage expired recently, any ideas on how much this may cost to fix at the Genius Bar?I took my MacBook to the Genius Bar and they determined that the hard drive was failing. Replacement done, reloaded software & I'm back in business, w/o that spinning wheel. This was my fourth replacement. No cost to me as it was done as a repeat repair. Just thought I'd update my original post.

G6-2321dx Windows 8.1 Spinning Wheel on startup
Hello hp,
I am trying to fix an hp pavilion g6-2321dx running Windows 8.1. Every 10 or so restarts, the computer gets stuck at the hp logo with the spinning wheel when trying to boot. I then have to hard reset the computer which either loads Windows or brings up the same spinning wheel of death.
Repairs performed:
-Conducted with hardware scans and everything passes.
-Reinstalled Windows 8.1 using the official .ISO from the Microsoft website.
-Reinstalled Windows 8.1 with an HP OEM DVD.
-Replaced hard drive.
-chkdsk scans (no errors)
-sfc scans (no errors)
-Turned off Hybrid Boot
-Turned off Secure Boot
-Turned off advanced boot Options
-Turned off driver signature enforcement and early-launch antimalware protection
-Updated all drivers
-Uninstalled and Reinstalled all Windows Drivers
THE PROBLEM PERSISTS!
I have the feeling that this problem relates to an error between the EUFI and Windows. I looked into EUFI update as my laptop is at F.26 but the support page for the g6-2321dx does not list an update (or I just can't seem to find it).
I have found a webpage saying sp66880.exe is the installer for F.29 for this model laptop, but the ftp site says the webpage is unavailable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Hi @Andrew9534 ,
Thank you for your inquiry.
I regret that you are having such an issue with recovering your notebook.
I have noticed that you have tried a lot of options to try and resolve this.
When I checked the software and driver page for your notebook the latest recommended bios version is the F.26.
HP Pavilion g6-2321dx Notebook PC software and drivers
I would not recommended installing any version that is not recommended by HP .
HP Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS
You could try restoring the defaults from the system configuration screen. This should restore the bios back to the original version. This should provide you a clean start.
When I pulled up the specifications for your notebook I see it came with Windows 8.
HP Pavilion g6-2321dx Notebook PC Product Specifications
I would suggest doing a factory recovery back to Windows 8.
HP PCs - Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8)
If you did not create recovery disks or a USB, please contact HP support for a recovery kit.
Please call our technical support at 800 474 6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get a support number for your region.

IPhoto spinning wheel on startup, freezes then crashes every time
Howdy Community,
I've had an issue with iPhoto and everything I've tried so far has failed miraculously. A couple of months ago, back when my library had over 10k photos iPhoto was responding a bit slowly until one day when I started it up and the spinning wheel went on forever and ever until iPhoto froze and then crashed. What I've tried since:
1. Used the photo library first aid. Repaired the permissions first, then repaired the database and lastly rebuilt the database, none of which made any difference.
2. Repaired the disk permissions and Macintosh HD itself
3. Created new library and chose to use the new one, which worked until I created the first event or enabled iCloud, then went back to loading forever and then freezing.
4. Completely deleted (moved to an external hard drive) my old library and created yet another new one, with no luck.
5. Uninstalled iPhoto and downloaded again from the App Store- made no difference whatsoever
The library that is currently used is completely empty, still iPhoto won't open up.
When iPhoto starts up the following processes bottleneck the system until iPhoto does not respond and the crashes:
1. distnoted
2. iCloud photos
3. com.apple.dock.extra
I'm on a mid-2010 13-inch MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 and iPhoto 9.5.1
I have completely run out of ideas and I don't have a scooby what is causing it either, so any input is much appreciated! CheersHello Linc Davis and thank you for the detailed instructions.

White screen, apple logo and spinning wheel on startup
I Have a MacBook Pro mid-2012 and suddenly it froze, so I tried shutting it down, but when I turned it on there was this grey screen at first with the apple logo and a spinning wheel. After a few times I shut it down and turned it on, the screen turned white, but the apple logo and the spinning wheel remained. I tried Safe Boot, reseting the NVRAM/PRAM and Internet Recovery. None of them worked. On internet recovery, the bar is stuck at the beginning and after an hour there is an error that says apple.com/support -5010f. Why is there an error on Internet Recovery and what can I do to fix my MacBook?
I hope you have a backup (preferably a bootable one).
Here’s a reference, read this first: Gray, Blue or White screen at boot, w/spinner/progress bar
You don’t mention booting to your recovery partition, you can try that.
There is also single user mode: (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If you have a bootable backup (like a clone that you made with Carbon Copy Cloner) you could try to boot from that and then use it to either
repair your usual boot drive
erase your usual boot drive and restore from the backup
If you have a bootable installer (like a thumb drive that you made with Diskmaker X (DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) then you could boot from that and see if you can repair your HD or erase and reinstall.
If you have a third party utility like Techtool Pro (Techtool Pro 7) that is on another partition of your drive or on a separate disk you could try to boot from that and see if you can repair your HD.
If none of that works then maybe your HD has a mechanical failure and needs to be replaced. -
IPhoto v9.0.1 Spinning Wheel on startup
I have a 7.8 GB iPhoto library that will no longer open under v9.0.1. It opened and got updated under 9.0. Then I installed the v9.0.1 update and it opened once, but I can not open it again. I have tried rebuilding the library (by holding down Command-Option on startup), but the spinning wheel is all I see.
Is there anything in the package contents that I can fiddle with? I have a backup of all my images, but it would be nice to retrieve the structure of the library somehow. Any other users having trouble after installing 9.0.1?I use iPhoto Library Manager 3.5.8 to manage several libraries. Unfortunately there does not seem to be anything it can do to remediate this particular library. If I try to rebuild the library, iPLM gives the error message: "Copying photos between libraries is not yet supported with iPhoto 9.0. An update to iPhoto Library Manager will be coming soon to provide full compatibility with iPhoto 9.0."
I had successfully opened one or two of the other libraries, but I'm hesitant now to open any more of them in iPhoto v9.0.1 until I can figure out what caused this problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

Spinning Wheel at Startup and Progress Bar but no boot
I just switched out my wife's iMac from a 24 inch to a 27 inch. I used the transfer utility for Apple and it worked (mostly). Then when I physically moved her old iMac to another room I can no longer get it to boot up. I get a startup spinning wheel and a progress bar (which I have no idea what that is for never saw that before) and then it goes away and it sticks on a spinning wheel. I have tried to startup with diagnostics (Hold the D key down) and same thing. I have also put the OS disk in and tried to boot form that and same thing happens. Any ideas on what might be going on or fixes?
OKay not there is more. It says
" The volume MacIntosh HD could not be repaired.

Blue screen and spinning wheel at startup
I had permission problems (locked time machine drive) so I did a full time machine restore.
Did the restart after the restore.
Machine won't reboot.
I get 'bong', apple logo on grey screen as per normal.
Then blue screen and spinning wheel for approx 7 seconds
Then blue screen and black pointer for approx 2 seconds
The blue screen spinning wheel / black pointer repeats.
Also can't start up from Snow Leopard DVD.
I get exactly the same scenario.
I have held down the power key at got the tone.
Still won't start.
HELP!!!!!
It's an Imac (white one) 1.8Gig Dual with 1.5 gig of ram.
Running Snow leopard.
I can see my disc over the ethernet; it is still there as it was sharing with my other machine.
Not sure if this helps me at all?
CheersReinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you cannot boot from your installer DVD on the iMac, then you can try connecting to your other computer via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode to boot and install from the other computer - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire -
Spinning wheel on startup - not going ahead
Hi,
Have a macbook model 1,1 Late 2006. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow leopard latest installed. Was having multiple kernel panics and I decided to get the system cleaned by cache cleaner. Did that with cocktail application. Booted from OS disc and repaired hard disk permissions and verified it. Now, when I boot from hard drive, I only get the apple logo with the spinning wheel (Not the rainbow wheel) and it's been a good twenty minutes since I've started up, but no result. Also, tried pressing shift and safe mode startup but does not respond (not sure). Resetting PRam also did not help.
HELP!!! I want to copy all my data (especially) mails to external hard drive and then reinstall the OS. Advice required here too. How do I archive mails. They are occupying crazy space on my hard disk.

I am trying to play a mental game on the AARP web site. However the spinng wheel appears upon selecting "Play" I am running OS X 10.6.8 and Safari 5.1.7. Thinking this was a problem with Adobe Flash Player, I have downloaded and run the Adobe uninstaller program for Flash Player and then downloaded and installed Flash Player 11.2. No luck. What's next?
Thanks, Kristenoops - it's Flash Player v 11.3 not 11.2

Black screen with spinning wheel on startup
I have a Mac Pro 1,1 (bought in Dec 2007)
Dual-Core Intel Xeon
2.66 GHz
9gb of ram
2TB HD
I'm running 10.6.8.
My computer froze while in Safari and after shutting it down with the power button, I started it up again and I first get the apple logo with the gears and then the screen goes black with just the spinning beach ball.
I can boot in safe mode.
I've booted from a Snow Leopard disc and ran Disc Utilities and the HD was verified and "appears to be ok". (Also ran a repair permissions)
I've run the extended Hardware Test and everything is fine there too.
I've reset the PRAM/NVRAM.
I've unpluggest all extrernal drives and peripherals and still, the black screen on start up.
From what I can discern from some other posts, this might be a graphics card issue...? I still have the original
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT in my machine.
I've tried rebooting a dozen times and mostly I get the black screen, but a couple of times it's also been stuck on a gray screen.
The last few reboots have been black. Would really apprciate any feedback. Thank you.Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

system uptime in nanosec: 1762365878
Nothing else after uptime, and then itll reboot shortly after that..
What I have tried:
-reseating the ram
-pulling out one 4 gig stick leaving in another (and vice versa) also leaving one stick in only one ram slot
-booting into safe mode - wont get past grey apple
-clearing PRAM - appears to clear but does nothing to fix the roor cause
-booting into mac osx utilities - never comes up
-booting into startup manager - Actually comes up, when I select the recovery partition itll either not work or panic crash... Also if I leave it in startup manager as it comes up it will eventually crash without me doing anything...
thoughts?update, now I cant even get to the grey boot-up screen. Only black screen, power light and fans spinning...

IMac Early 2008 - Spinning Wheel constantly also in Safe Mode
Hello Apple Support community!
Recently I've been having much trouble with my iMac Early 2008. In the last 5 years I have never had an issue with it until about 4 days ago and I have no idea how this problem came about.
I have 10.8.5 installed and know a bit about OS X.
Problem Description: On a recent Dropbox sync where there appeared to be a folder conflict the computer hung and was unresponsive. I had to hard shut down by using the power button. Every successive boot (and attempt for DB to sync) ended in a hang and the spinning wheel. I booted into Safemode, disabled Dropbox as a startup item, rebooted and everything worked for a few hours. Because I needed files from DB i decided to download the update and install. This added DB to the startup items again and history repeated itself. Spinning wheel on startup and a hard shut down again. This time safe mode couldn't save me. I was also getting the spinning wheel there too. I left it for a few days until today when I finally hads the time to troubleshoot.
From my iPad I unlinked the iMac from dropbox and booted it from the install disk to perform a hardward test. The standard test showed no errors so I rebooted. I immediately wanted to do a time machine backup and after 6GB were transferred, Time Machine stalled. The spinning wheel was back and I had to hard reset. So I started in safe mode and waited for Time Machine to do its thing. It began cleaning up and then managed only about 140MB before hanging.
Next I started the iMac in Firewire target disk mode and tried to transfer the files to my 15" Powerbook (OS 10.4.11) After only 700MB the Firewire logo on the iMac screen stopped moving and the file transfer stalled. I did a hard shut down again.
This time I ran OS 10.5.4 from the install disk and opened disk utility > verify disk to check for errors. None were found so I rebooted into SAFE MODE and wanted to run terminal to clear dyld cache. Since Finder is unusually sluggish and it seems any mouse-clicking causes the spinning wheel, I waited a bit and then hit command-space to bring up Spotlight into order to launch Terminal. There the iMac hung yet again, but quite strange is that the spotlight search window came up with the description about indexing taking a long time etc etc. I only know that the first time an HD has to be indexed and since this computer is quite old I find that curious.
A.t.m. I am running the extended hardware test from install disk and looking for suggestions about how I can reliably get my data off the HD in order to do a clean install, if I have to. Alternative suggestions to avoid that would be welcome, but I understand that this may be the only solution, if not also having to buy and install a new HD first.
thanks for your help in advance.
best regards,
DanAHT extended version reports the following error
4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0)
Google results show only people with SSD drives reporting that. Cause could be a loose cable??
two weeks ago I moved and had to pack the iMac in the original box. However I transported this myself and not the movers. -
I have had my MacBook for around two months now. I upgraded the memory to 2GB with 3rd party DIMMs specifcallly sold for the Mac Book and carrying a lifetime warranty. The Mac Book is never moved and only used in clamshell mode on a thick (and cool) marble-topped table. I have an external Apple USB keyboard, Blutooth mouse and 17" LCD monitor.
Suddenly last Thursday I started getting the dreaded spinning wheel hangs trying to do absolutely anything. I have tried the following in order of escalation:
1. Restarted
2. Repaired permissions - all OK
3. Repaired the drive - all OK
4. Run the Hardware Test (then the extended test) - all OK
5. Re-installed the software (with archive) the OS from MacBook DVD-ROM
6. Backed-up then did a re-install and erase - i.e. factory config
7. Zeroed the whole drive overnight and repeated 7
All without any effect on the apalling hangs/spinning wheel during every finder or application operation. Just backing up to DVD-R took 3 days because it took around 10 times longer to write each disk tham indicated by Toast. Thankfully my external DVD drive has buffer under-run prevention.
Any ideas? I would be suspicious that it was a memory or HD problem but the hardware tests say otherwise and there are no craches or errors being reported.
Had I been in the UK then I would have returned it to the shop for repair, but I am in Turkey and the only service agent is 1,000 miles away in Istanbul. I am not confident that they would fix the problem as no hardware errors are being indicated.
Help! (sent c/o my old iBook G4/800Mhz - around five times faster than the Mac Book now).Hi,
You need to try taking out the RAM that you replaced and put the stock RAM back in. See if that does anything. Also, try resetting the PMU. Although that deals with the Power Managment, it seems that resetting it will cure a lot of problems as well. To do this, take out the battery, hold down the power button for 5 seconds without the computer plugged in, and then replace the battery and see what happens. If trying these steps does not solve the problem, I would call Apple Care. I know nothing about the service in Turkey, but hopefully Apple will be able to help.

Spinning wheel on desktop after all applications have quit
Ok. My macbook is a little old (2008 operating system ios 10.6.8). So i am not shy to the various issues it's been suffering through lately. But this one is new. When I go to my apple icon to force quit an application that is making my computer run a little slow. It says that Finder is not responding. So I forcequit it and now the spinning wheel wont dissapear from my desktop. Every other application works fine. And when I'm on safari the cursor is normal. But heres the kicker. When I quit safari. My tool bar on the top including my apple icon dissapeared and the spinning wheel is still on the desktop. Something isn't right about it I think finder is on the fritz. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Trying to save this old lady.. Other than that she's doing pretty great. Thanks a bunch
