OS 10.4.10 on G4 using quicktime 7.2 and Avid

HHeellpp!!!
My system just upgraded to 10.4.10 and Quicktime 7.2, and I'm running Avid Xpress Pro on my system. I have the upgrade for Avid; however, Quicktime 7.2 is not supported, (didn't know) and I need to roll back to 7.1.6. Can anyone help me successfully accomplish this w/o media loss?
Mucho appreciate!

...Note that an archive and install should not affect either your project files or your OMFI MediaFiles directories, so you can do that without losing any media.
If you are running Avid, you MUST treat your computer as an appliance. DO NOT upgrade ANYTHING until you know for certain that the upgrade is compatible with your Avid version! If you need the upgrade features, get yourself another drive and install the later OS version on that. On my desktop machine, I'm still running X.3.9 and QuickTime 6.5 because that's what works with my Avid. It's a PITA to have to reboot with another drive just to use QT-7 or to burn a dual-layer DVD, but at least my Avid works!

  • I am using QuickTime 7 Pro and want to loop my video.  The Loop function is grayed out.  Why?  How can I loop my video?

I am using Quicktime 7 Pro on a Max Mini to play my video on a gallery monitor.  Under View, the Loop option is grayed.  Why?  I need to play the video in a continuous loop all day.  Thank you.

Loop appears to be "broken" in QuickTime Player Pro and 10.7.4.
It's been fixed in 10.8 and also works in QuickTime 10, 10.1 and 10.2.
Use 10.1 on your machine if you need to loop your playback.

  • Video conversion using Quicktime Pro (Which Export Settings?)

I tried converting videos (.avi) to .m4v so that I can play them on my iPod Touch. However I am having problems.
iPod Touch documentation says that the following video file formats are supported by iPod touch:
    A H.264 (Baseline Profile Level 3.0)
    B MPEG-4 (Simple Profile)
    My question is:
    1. Can anyone show me how can i covert to those format using Quicktime Pro? And please do let me know which exact EXPORT setting I am supposed to use. I used EXPORT> Movie to iPod . It did not seem to work.
    Thanks in Advance.

I use it on a 24" iMac C2D running at 2.33GHz with 3GB of RAM, and it's much quicker than a regular QT export and a bit quicker than VisualHub. I won't quote a time to encode a "2 hour movie" because there's a lot more factors involved like resolution and original file encoding but the device is faster than using the twin cores.
No, it won't work with Handbrake, nor VisualHub for that matter. It acts as a plug-in (albeit hardware) for QT and any application that uses QT for export can utilise the turbo.264.
One other (for me big) advantage is that Elgatos own software for using the turbo.264 supports AppleScript and hence Automator.

  • Please help, I am trying to split a HD mp4 video into two parts using Quicktime 10.2

Please help, I am trying to split a HD mp4 video into two parts using Quicktime 10.2, running Mountain Lion. I use trim then export but it doesn't give the movie option as a format. What would you suggest i do?

I'm not sure why you're using a FAT32 drive, but using ExFAT instead of FAT32 would be a better overall choice as it doesn't have the 4 Gig limit.

  • How to play MP3s on IPhone without using QuickTime

I listen to a lot of audio lectures that come in an email with a direct link. My phone will automatically open these and play them using QuickTime, but QT doesn't have an option to bookmark. I don't typically finish the full lecture in one sitting so I need to be able to bookmark my place. iTunes will not work for me for this as I am not always able to take the several extra steps necessary to download to my computer and then wait for them to show up on my phone through icloud which sometimes takes days. Always hours. Is there another app that will do this?  Audible is a good example of how I would like it to work.

Yes I have, thank you.  And google.

Since it is unlikely that two different people downloading the same files would end up with the same files being corrupted... Were episodes 1-4 encoded using the same compression formats as 5-11? Do episodes 1-4 open in an alternative media player like VLC? What error message, if any, is given for not opening?

  • I have lots of .MOV files on my iPhone5 that I need to transfer to my PC.  Using QuickTime Player 7.7.4 I am unable to view them once they have been copied to a hard drive or directly from the iPhone via USB. 1% of the time a vid is viewable

I can tranfer them to a hard drive on my PC, but am unable to view most of them using QuickTime Player 7.7.4. Doesn't matter if I'm viewing them via a USB connection to my iPhone5 or from a hard drive after the file has been copied via USB.  1% of the vids are viewable, 20% open with a black screen and audio only. The rest open with a blue, purple and green stryrated mess and no audio.  Yes its a Quick Time problem I know but where do I post this question in the community?  Also searching my drives for other .MOV files downloaded from the net I find the same problem with them.

Heres what I don't like about VLC, but at least the files are viewable...somewhat.
    1. You can't flip the image 90degrees, needs to have a rotate feature for sure.  This needs to have keyboard shortcut so vids can be rotated easily as one may have shot video horizontally and vertically in the same take.
    2. Opens file to a very large window, most of it off the screen, it should REMEMBER what you resized it to, so the next time a video is played you don't have  to drag the window back on the screen so you can get to the resizing handle in the lower corner.
    3.  Doesn't buffer while playing, so the movies are extremely erractic, starting and stopping every 3 seconds, highly annoying.
OK so maybe my PC is too slow, its a dual processor 486 Hyperrthread 2.8G but I only have 2Gigs of memory, however, bettery than 50% of the memory is still available while playing a vid (memory is checked every 4 seconds with a program), but I have 90-100% CPU useage going on while playing.
Maybe I should think about a new computer.

  • Can't open any version of iTunes or use quicktime

yesterday i downloaded and installed iTunes 7 (before i knew that there was problems with it). when i opened it massive chunks of my library were missing so i decided to revert back to an earlier version of itunes. removed iTunes 7 and installed iTunes 6.0.5 (think that's the correct number) but it wouldn't open. it comes up with a message saying that iTunes had encountered an unexpected error and needs to close. i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling different versions of iTunes and rolling back to various system restore points on my computer but i constantly get the same message. I can't use quicktime either - it just comes up with the same message.
    HELP!!!

I can't use quicktime either - it just comes up
    with the same message.
just doublechecking your precise error message. is it
an "itunes has encountered a problem" message? or is
it something a bit different? if it's different, what
is the precise text? (include error message numbers
    if you're getting any.)
i don't know if this will mean anything to you...
Faulting application pictureviewer.exe, version 7.1.3.100, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x63656666.
for some reason the error message i was getting on screen when i tried to open QT isn't coming up now but QT isn't opening either. i got that text from going to control panel>admin tools>event viewer. the text i was getting previously when i tried to open QT was "quicktime has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close" (or something v similar).

  • Problem Exporting for Web files created in FCE using Quicktime

I have been using FCE 4.01 on Mac OSX 10.7.5 with Quicktime 10.1 (501.29).
I convert my footage in Mpeg Streamclip (GREAT free program) and set the files to the Apple Intermediate Codec.  This makes them work really well in my timeline and I don't have rendering issues or problems.
So, my problem comes when I File/Export/Quictime Movie.
The original file plays fine, but they're 2-3 gbs each, so I put them into Quicktime to convert them to a webfriendly size, but every single time they come out as an audio only file.  GRRRR!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Maybe I'm missing something stupid.
Thanks so much for your help.
    Sincerely,
    Steve

Why not bring the exported AIC file  back into MPEG Streamclip instead of QTX? You'll have a lot more control.
Compress the file to H.264 and restrict the data rate according to the resolution you're working with and to something consistent with the guidelines of the Web Service (say, You Tube) you're uploading to, (For example, something like 6 Mb per second would be about right for a 720P file.)
Or use Quicktime Conversion from FCE.
    Good luck.

  • Can't get iPhone 5 recording to work using Quicktime on Yosemite

QuickTime on Yosemite now has this nifty feature where you can record your iPhone, provided you connect it using a lightning cable. Now I've done all that, but when I open QuickTime and select my iPhone from the dropdown menu next to the record button on QuickTime, it stutters and fails to pull my iPhone's image to my mac. If I press record anyways, it crashes.
One thing that does happen is that it keeps reopening iPhoto asking if I want to import photos from my phone. (a little annoying.) Maybe the cable is bust? It works fine in any other occasion.
Who else has this problem? I need the recording function pretty badly...

I'm having a similar issue.  I'm trying to record some games on my iPhone 6 Plus.  My Macbook Pro is from 2010 and still running strong.  However, I'm getting crashes when trying to record Vain Glory.  I can record other games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.  Quicktime on the Mac just seems to be crashing with certain iPhone apps.  Weird issue.

Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

  • Customising import of DV tapes using Quicktime Pro

    Hi all,
I am trying to import a lot of DV tapes onto my Mac (and some other analogue stuffe that I route through the camcorder so it ends up in DV even if it originated from VHS), the ultimate aim is to have the videos available within iTunes so I can stream them to my Apple TV 2 after some minimal editing (cutting out bad bits mainly).
I have tried to import via iMovie, but it has the following drawbacks: Huge file sizes, spends ages creating thumbnails, and then is really really slow to encode into H.264 compared to something like Handbrake.
I am not *too* fussed about final image quality, I am more concerned with being able to complete the job without spending too much time.  What I want to do is encode into H.264 during the import, and then quickly be able to cut out what I don't want, and save into iTunes.  Quicktime Pro is the closest I have found, but it seems to have the following limitations:  Very limited selection of encoders and sizes without any ability to customise means I can't choose an appropriate quality level - the best is only 640x480, with no info on bitrates etc.  This should be fine for my analogue sources, but potentially no good for some stuff in genuine DV format.  Also, there seems to be a limit on how long it will record for, which doesn't make a lot of sense as it's capping out on videos less than 200Mb in size leaving me with extra steps to combine the individual videos into a larger one (References movies are quick to make, but won't stream to the Apple TV 2)
Is there a way to customise these settings to ammend the import settings and increase the maximise size, either unofficially or not?
    Many thanks for yout time.

In the interest of ripping this stuff with the least complexity possible I was wanting to use QTP, but it seems that using the "best" preset with a widescreen DV input provides a file that is only 640x360 encoded at 96kbps, which is a lot smaller than the input native and isn't really good enough for me sadly.
The stated data rate looks more like an audio data rate that a video or video + audio data rate. Since the preset must be compatible with both NTSC and PAL "standards," it appears Apple programmers lower, more universal settings for greater device compatibility.
I can select Device Native, but that would get me back into massive DV files again.  Not sure if this would be better than using the Vidi Firewire Capture would be better or not than this setting?
The basic rule of thumb here is "you can never have enough hard drive space." I currently have 25 TBs in external hard drive space connected to my main iMac for recreational/non-professional use. And, while you may consider DV data rates/files to be massive, HDV data rates/files would quadruple yours and some Apple Animation data rates/files could easily quadruple the HDV data rates/files. As to the question of using Vidi, if you are going to capture your files as DV content and don't want to use iMovie or other video editor application, then Vidi would be the utility to use.
Either way, at a couple of hours long the timeline within QTP becomes too "small" to be able to select bits to cut with any accuracy as it is not zoomable unlike iMovie, but putting them in iMovie would then start with the old thumbnailing again...
The QT 7 Pro Player "time line" is zoomable to some degree. This "zoom" capability is related to the size of the player. If you expand the size of the player to fill your screen as much as possible, you can "scrub" the playhead in smaller relative increments. Basically you should start your edits by expanding the player as large as your display allows and scrub the playhead to the rough area of your edit and then refine the position of the playhead using the fast play and jog controls in the A/V pallet and finally use the left/right arrow keys to select the exact frame you wish to edit. With some practice, you should find this work flow to be fairly quick if/when you know what and how you wish to edit the file.
As an example, a 1 hour 58 minute 23 second and 15 frame 640x360 file displayed at its default size can scrub the playhead in approximately 15 second increments. If I expand the player to its maximum dimensions on my monitor, the "scrub" increment is reduced to about 4 second with fast play and/or jog able to refine the playhead location to within a few frames of where I want to be.
What I was doing to remove the bits I don't want in iMovie was to create a project, include the bits I want, then delete the events using the option to only remove unused elements.  This is a yet further step which takes a long time, but then gives me chunks of files I can queue in handbrake and then stitch back together using QTP.
Most strategies fall into either a "subtractive" or and "additive" work flow. I normally make "rough cuts" in the first pass and place the results in an folder/bin for further refining later. Once I have everything sorted and trimmed, I then merge/join the DV clips to create a single file which is then converted all at once to the target compression format or, in frequent instance, to several different compression formats or variations dependent on target use—burning to DVD, burning to BD, TV viewing, posting to the internet, etc.
I just tried a native capture with QTP, and it gives me the following video settings:
    DV, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), Millions
    16-bit Integer (Little Endian), 4.0 (L R _ _), 32.000 kHz
    1024 x 576 pixels (Actual)
If I encode this with Handbrake using the Apple Universal I get:
    H.264, 720 x 592, Millions
    AAC, 2 channels, 32000 Hz
    1033 x 592 pixels
I would normally encode the file using the source file standard. In my case that would the NTSC 720x480 (853X480) equivalent of your PAL 720x576 (1024x576) anamorphic DV import. Would also prefer the AAC audio track be encoded using a 48,0 KHz sampling rate at 160 Kbps since my DV audio is set for 16-bit/48.0 KHz. (I also include an DD5.1 passthrough at 448 or 640 Kbps if available.) You can create and save your own custom resets which is what I use for HandBrake conversions specifically targeting the TV2 device and which include additional analysis/motion prediction settings.
So it looks like getting QTP to encode into H.264 just won't do it well enough, even though it should be able to go better without extending beyond the limits of the source
If you are referring to the conversion of DV source files to H.264, then use the "Movie to MPEG-4" or "Movie to Quicktime" export option to enter your own custom target settings. However, nether of these export potions offer the same ease for setting up custom anamorphic encodes for custom dimensions as HandBrake does. (I personally prefer using HandBrake here.)
I think the size limit was CPU bound with it not keeping up with the input fast enough to real-time encode and thus stopping.  It's not done it since.
That may well be the case. My old G5 processed files in handBrake at 4 to 6 time "real time." My MacBook Pro converts files in roughly "real time" using my custom HandBrake presets. On my new iMac the default TV2 HandBrake preset process at about 180 fps and at 70-90 fps using an even higher quality custom preset I just added. As you can see, the different CPUs involved cam make quite a difference in conversion speed.

  • Audio and video out of sync when using quicktime conversion

    hello,
i am editing a hdv project and want to export to quicktime. the client needs it in a specific size (700x394). they do not want the video in the file compressed, just the size of image. they are compressing the video through flash for the web. anyways, i used to just use quicktime conversion, custom size and use 700x394, but now when i do that the audio and video are sparadically out of sync in the product. the wierd thing is that the project plays fine in the timeline, but when i export the problem occours. i then, exported to a full res fcp movie and it is fine. then tired reexporting through qt pro to 700x394. when i did this their were no sync issues but the quality of the file was not so good, it look more pixely, certainly not as good as when i did it using quicktime conversion.
how can i export through fcp to get the 700x394 file? someone said 'use current settings' instead of using quicktime conversion? how do i do this? what do i need to do and what are my settings?
any help is appreciated. thanks a ton in advance.
    cheers,
    clay

What format are you converting the HDV to?
If it's animation, it is quite possible your computer can't pull the data rate. In this case it would be a processor / hard drive issue not an out of sync issue.

  • Using Quicktime's "Export for Web" feature in iWeb?

    Greetings,
Does anyone know if this is possible within iWeb, that is, to use movies created using Quicktime's "Export to Web" feature, which really seems to deliver superior movie quality?
    Much appreciated,

Thanks, good stuff, though I'm still having a small problem with this. I'm getting a gray line around the top and left of my movie and the right side of the player is getting cut off. When I try to make the width larger, it just moves the gray line further to the left.
