OS 10.4.11 mail virus.

Hi folks,
I wish to thank any and all who have helped me in the past.  I you didn't receive a thank you, it's because I did something wrong in posting the thank you and I apologize.
Well!  Morticia (G4) has a new problem that rogers says is so rare, they can't help me.  Rogers says she has picked up a virus, in OS 10.4.11 mail, that is spamming in the background.  I installed Mozilla Firefox and ran "housecall.antivirus.com" which informs me that I'm clean.  I'm still getting the symptom, though.  The symptom is that; when I shut Morticia down, as well as the modem, and then start her, my System Preferences come back, unlocked.  Rogers tells me that this indicates a virus is still there and they're threatening to cut me loose.  That would be a disaster.
Has someone else had this rarity and what can I do? Is there a reliable antivirus? The only other choice I may have is to reinstall Tiger, but, if it has happened once, why not again?
Please let me know what you do as soon as you can.
Thanks you!
Allan

With the exception of specific preferences, the System Preferences application is not normally locked. So either you are referring to something else or not describing the situation correctly.
There are no known viruses affecting OS X that are in the wild. Although you can receive email that carries Windows viruses and pass them on if you forward the email, those viruses will not function on a Mac. See the following:
Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.
For additional information on viruses, trojans, and spyware visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on viruses and spyware.
There is a free, Open Source anti-virus utility for the Mac called ClamXAV - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Could this be a Mail virus or something like it?

Just received an e-mail as follows:
From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <[email protected]>
    Subject: Returned Mail: User unknown
    Date: November 27, 2005 10:41:55 AM AKST
    To: (my e-mail address here)
The message indicates that the mail was returned to me because there was a problem with the delivery (The following addresses had permanent fatal errors..."):
That paragraph is followed by a batch of 17 e-mail addresses, each with a user name beginning with the letters "p" and the letter "d," but every one of them addresses @ aol.com
The Remote for each e-mail was: Remote-MTA: DNS; air-yc01.mail.aol.com
    X-Mailer Microsoft-Outlook-Express-Macintosh-Edition/5.02.2002
Please note that I have never used Outlook Express. In fact, I don't think it's installed on my Mac. Also, here is where I think the problem is at:
    Reply-To-"PEA" <(my e-mail address is shown in here)>
From: "Peabody" <(my e-mail address again shown in here)>
Does it mean that somebody used my e-mail addressfor mass e-mail, or is it a virus? Nobody has my e-mail address, except for a couple of friends, and I have never answered to anybody I don't know personally.

Not a virus since there are no viruses that currently affect OS X which has been available for 5 years.
Please note that I have never used Outlook Express. In fact, I don't think it's
    installed on my Mac.
OE for Macs is an OS 9 application which if installed on your Mac, would require OS 9 to be installed to run the Classic environment under OS X.

  • Mac mail virus?

I have a feeling that Iv picked up a worm or virus that has taken over my MobileMe mail account. I haven't gotten any mail to my MobileMe account so went to look. That's when I noticed that on the 29th and 30th I sent out 30 separate e-mails using 'very' old subject lines and each was sent exactly at 06:44. I'm not even up at 06:44.
Is there anyway to find out if Iv got a worm or virus that's come in attached to someone else's e-mail and now using my address book to do it's own thing?

    Temporarily:
Why don't you take the machine offline when you are not using it?
That puts some control back into your hands, in the short term, if you have no reason to leave itonline 24/7.
+Wild hair:+ Could it be in how you work?
The emails aren't in the drafts folder too, as copies are they?
    This is unlikely,
but could they be there as well - and you are "sending all drafts" using a timed script or a mistaken keyboard shortcut? (That one taught me not to keep drafts with destination addresses, in case I had a change of heart about what I said in an email draft!)
If its not for certain that you've been hacked,
working from what do you KNOW, vs what you don't is usually a good idea.
I've gone through this kind of suspicion several times, only to find that I've jumped to the most unlikely,
but most insidious conclusion first. Are you using any keyboard capture software that was inadvertantly set?
(I once got into a mess with MenuMaster doing this on me).
Sorry. No real help here from me.
    Maybe its useful anyway.

  • Is there a Mail virus?

My wife complained that all the emails had disappeared from her Powerbook. I checked, they had gone. I looked in the deleted email folder in library where there were about a dozen of the last emails received. As I looked they disappeared one by one. The only explanation I can come up with is a virus! Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    zanyjudy wrote:
The last email on her machine was dated today. It was deleted from the inbox and was deleted from the deleted mail folder as I watched. Nothing to do with my rules. There were two years of emails in the inbox.
I suspect that you haven't checked under Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors/Trash to see then the system is set to delete mail that's in the Trash folder. I further suspect that you haven't checked under Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Advanced to see the settings there, either. You might want to do that.
And I think that it might, it really might, be a good idea to have a close look at the rules. This really does sound as though mail is being automatically sent to the Trash as it arrives, and that in turn sounds as though there's a rule being applied.

  • Can iPad get a mail virus ? Why is there no software or that yet ?

I've iPad 3 , it's amazing , but I thought my mail might be vulnerable, as I've been hit in my laptop .is ther any protection for iPad ? Can I get a virus thru mail on iPad ?

By the strict definition of a virus, a malicious program that perpetrates itself across your operating system and spreads through your device, no. The 'sandbox' nature of hte iPad prevents that. Sandbox meaning that most programs are not allowed to communicate with each other so infections cannot spread. Especially since the iPad lacks the file management system that PC's are based on.
iPads are still vulnerable to browser hijacks (although the 5.1.1 update is supposed to help that). You also can get malware on them although it shouldn't be able to spread. The main risk, as I understand it, of spreading something on your iPad to your PC is if you download something - hard to do with Safari - and then get that file onto your computer. but the file types you're limited to downloading should prevent/curtail that.
Viruses written for pc's and mac's literally won't run on an iPad because they are different operating systems.
Most malware etc, requires direct user intervention to happen....clicking on that bad link, etc.
So you're relatively safe at this point in time. Not to say the bad guys aren't working on something. I'm sure they are. where there's a challenge there are geeks striving to overcme it, but viruses, as defined, don't affect the iPad.

  • E-mail virus

I unknowingly installed a virus when checking my AOL e-mail on my other computer. (desktop) It seemed to eat up my programs. I tried to do a nondestructive system recovery, using the recovery tools cd. After I get the message recovery finished, I
then get a message that the computer cannot install C:\hp\bin\SetRes.log. so, I hit OK, then the computer gives me the houglass icon, with the message, please wait, but, nothing happens! It just sits there, like it is froze up! Can anyone tell me if, or how
I can fix this? Short of runn ing a destructive system recovery?

    Hello,
you have to perform a full scan on your OS using an antivirus so that you delete the virus from your disks.
Once done, perform a repair install of your OS.

  • Possible iTunes e-mail virus

Hello, this is my first post.
I received a spam e-mail tonight saying it was from iTunes. It contained the following note:
    "Hello!
You have received an iTunes Gift Certificate in the amount of $50.00
You can find your certificate code in attachment below.
Then you need to open iTunes. Once you verify your account, $50.00 will be credited to your account, so you can start buying music, games, video right away.
    iTunes Store."
Attached was a .zip file which I assume is a Windows directed virus. I tried to find a way to notify Apple about this virus (which they may or may not be able to do anything about). But, could not find a way to contact them other than by phone. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.
    Thanks for reading...AM

No you don't have a virus, as there are no viruses that run on OS X.
Somebody who has your email address in their address book most likely has a virus, or is a zombie computer and sent the emails on your behalf. Nothing you can really do about it.

  • Apple Mail Virus?

I use Apple Mail in conjunction with 3 separate Email accounts. My iMap and Google accounts work fine, but my Hotmail account is behaving very strangely. When I view an Email in Hotmail it looks fine, but recently when viewed in Apple Mail all Emails to my Hotmail account are addressed to [email protected] I don't have an account with firstrade whoever they might be and nor do I have their details in my address book.
Can anyone shed any light on what might be the cause of this...is this a virus of some sort?

I have found an answer to the problem on a different thread....follow the link below

ok last post ended up responses going futher and further away from the issues. turned into a boy cat fight.
was getting mulitple copies like trojan, virus, worm whatever. this am just typed a letter tried to send then disaster. had to get tricky keep from losing work. wouldnt send . then tried to open mailbox back not one thing showed up in in sent drafts trash etc. showed a number but nothing inside
mail wasnt responding. took some doing get to finder..
reopened all came back. took some doing but got that piece of mail in drafts out of outbox before ...
it would appear mac.mail10.4 has some" issues."
any concrete help not debate of theory out there?

    d,
Spyware's highly unlikely on the Mac. Your phone, on the other hand, is a different story.
Bluetooth can be problematic, as well, if you allow any device to connect. There's even a term for it: Bluejacking, although it's used mainly for harmless pranks. It's easy enough to turn off, though.
Rebuilding the mailbox doesn't normally lose data. Deleting the mailbox would, though. Did you upgrade from OS X Panther to OS X Tiger? If so, mailbox data corruption is a fairly common issue and rebuilding tends to work well.
You can find out what processes are running and taking up your memory by running Activity Monitor. Slow response tends to go with either a process that's hogging memory or a simple lack of sufficient RAM.
Your Mail files are in Users/<your user name>/Library/Mail/<mailbox accounts>. You can back up by copying those files. If they're corrupt, you'll probably be wasting a blank disk.
Check my email for one other concern.

  • Possible Mail Virus?

Friday I developed a problem where I received a bogus email entitled "Undeliverable Intermittently" from "System Administrator". I call it bogus because the return email address is from a business website in Licthenstein!
The problem is when I try to delete several copies of this email in my in box, it does move to trash, but reappears in the inbox. If I Delete the mail from all mailboxes, except sent mail, these bogus emails still show up.
With the Junk folder active and filtering on, Mail "activity" ball runs on endlessly, and you can only quit mail by Force quitting (eventhough the application does not turn red in the list).
Turning off filtering and eliminating the junk folder solves the lockup problem, but the emails still appear in the in box.
I have gone on the mail server at Comcast and deleted all the mail, and the problem persists on my mac.
    Any help is appreciated.

Help. Yesterday, I picked up my mail as usual. An unknown item appeared. I was about to delete it when mail quit. A report to Apple was generated. Since then Mail opens transiently before quitting. The message still appears at the top of the in box with a blue dot to indicate it has remained unopened. Mail is now inaccessible to me on this Mac (1.42DP, OS10.4.6, recent security update installed)
    Any ideas?
