OS 10.4.7 Disc utillity on old PowerBook HD

My OS 10.4.7 Disc utillity cant delete or format my "old" PB HD
Hi, hope someone can help me.
I got an older PowerBook G4 1Ghz with OS 10.4.7.
When I start on the OS DVD or an extern HD I can´t format or delete my internal HD with this new Disc utillity???
Symbols are marked red...
When I start in OS 10.2.8 and use this versions Disc utillity, I can delete and format my internal HD???
Why is that?
And since I have experienced some troble withe crash on the internal disc and since it is getting to smalle, I will replace it with a new bigger one.
Will I experience the above issue when I do so???
Kind regards Weimar.

Hi Weimar
If the HD is healthy you should not be experiencing
any of these problems. Everything should work fine.
Have you tried repairing the Disk or running Hardware
tests on it? What's it's SMART status?
Matthew Whiting
Hi Matthew,
Ok,
the smart funktion failed.
And I have tryed repair using Disc Utillity and Tech Tool Platinum...
Sometime it seems that the HD is ok, and then when I installe system og other software it do funny stuff...
So I think I will go for a new HD
Thanks for your reply...

  • Old External drive appears on SYS. Info., not Disc Utility.

-I have a external enclosure containing my used hdd from my old windows machine connected to my macbook pro retina.
-I am trying to clear it to use with just my mac and cannot see it in my Disc utility, yet can see it in my System info under the usb location.
-There is data on the drive that I wanted to save, but now im desperate enough to just want the drive to backup on.
-I was able to see the drive on my replacement windows machine in disc management but was unable to access it because anything i would do would respond "disc is not ready" or something along those lines.
-I've ruled out connection problems due to the fact that I can see the drive appear in System Information when plugged in, and it is gone when unplugged.
-I have tried a cold boot and get the results above, and trying to hot boot makes my computer not able to boot up at all, even when I dictate to boot with my internal boot drive.
    Thank you for any advise!

you can only repair and verify permissions on a drive with OS X installed. so that part is completely normal.

  • Archive and Install/Disc Utility issues -

I'm currently spending a summer abroad in South America, and have had issues with my Macbook Pro (early 2011 version) no longer starting up after some virus experiences last week.  The computer hangs itself during loading on the white screen w/ grey apple and the spinning dial.  In contacts with Apple Care as well as some Mac-saavy friends, the following situations have been tried:
Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself.
Opening in single user mode - I run the recommended sbin/fsck -fy command to clean up the hard drive.  It comes back after having checked 6-7 parts, saying that the MacHD is in good shape, with a message following saying that something had been "modified" (forgive me for not remembering the correct verbage at present).  I then run the same command again, resulting in a message that the HD is clean and without error.  I then "reboot" and remain hung on the white screen w/ grey apple.
Opening in verbose mode - I reach the following lines of text, and then there is no further progress:
    enable
    IONetworkController::enable
    createMediumTables
    enable end
MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack
same line as above saying "Auth timed out" at the end
Command+option+r+p - shock two or three times, (three startup chimes) and computer continues to hang itself in the normal spot.
    - So, at this point I took the advice of Apple Care and a few other friends, and tracked down a "retail copy" of Mac OSX (10.6.3) in order to try to do an Archive and Install or any sort of Disc Utility via the startup disc.
Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen.
Holding "option" during the startup gives me the option of loading from the HD, or the disc.  Selecting the disc proceeds to whirr the cd drive, take me to the white loading screen with the grey apple, and... you guessed it... leaves the CPU hung.
My question is then, is my Macbook Pro unable to read this disc and execute Archive and Install/Disc Utility for hardware reasons as per the virus attack, or is the disc not compatible with my version of OSX (which I have since confirmed through my wife to be 10.6.6)?
Different sources have told me different things.  The local AASP in Uruguay sold me what they professed to be the "latest" version of OSX - the 10.6.3, what's more for $55 dollars instead of the lower cost as available in the states (between $15-$30), so I am reluctant to go back to them for advice when they seem more inclined to cash in on my inexperience (Mac owner of less than a month) than actually fixing my issue.  Apple Care told me that a standard "retail disc" should work, but I am assuming now that they believe I can snag the same version as initially came with my Macbook Pro.  Should I be looking to have my wife mail my original OSX install DVDs down here to resolve this problem?  Should 10.6.3-retail be working and is not for reasons I haven't identified?  I have since done some online research and found mentions that doing any sort of HD partitioning or OSX reinstalls can only be accomplished by utilizing a disc of an equal or more recent version of the OSX (examples that 10.4 can't work on a notebook preinstalled with 10.5, etc).  Does this translate to 10.6.3 not being able to function for my 10.6.6 MBP?
Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated, as essentially all of my schoolwork and assignments are now trapped on an inaccessible HD.  Thank you for your time.
    - Joseph

I tried adding in a bunch of information about what your troubleshooting steps meant, but the server went into maintenance while I did. So, here it is again:
"Opening in safe mode - The loading bar (added at the bottom of the grey apple screen) loads about 1/4 of the way, disappears, and the computer hangs itself."
This is FSCK running, and gives you an indication of it's progress.
"MacAuthEvent en0   Auth result for: 00:23:cd:1e:f2:c4 No Ack"
This is either a failed DHCP request or ARP request.
    "Command+option+r+p"
         Command+Option+P+R - Resets PRAM. That's why p+r.
"Inserting the disc and holding "c" at startup results in the cd drive whirring the disc for a few moments, and then remaining hung at the same white loading screen."
This problem indicates that the disc is too old to boot your system. The reason for why this disc cannot boot is because it doesn't contain the necessary drivers for your model MacBook Pro. My mom and brother have similar models, and my brother had similar issues while in Japan. He went and got an install disc as well, which failed, I ended up stepping him through so that it would boot in Safe Mode, and then got it working in Normal Mode remotely.
FYI: Sophos has a free Mac Antivirus program, that is very processing friendly, and will scan in the background. You may wish to consider it as an alternative to Avast! if it continues giving you problems. Though I suspect it may be coincidence that your computer had problems shortly after Avast! cleaned up files. Let me know how it goes. You may wish to open up Disk Utility and check your S.M.A.R.T. Status. You want to make sure it says "Verified" If it doesn't say "Verified" then you have a problem.

  • IPod G3 erased on disc utility...can't restore

    Hello everyone,
I wonder if anyone can help me: in an attempt to prevent me from deleting all my music from the ipod (showed exclamation mark and folder) i deleted itunes and ipod software and attempted to reinstall - itunes 6 worked but i couldn't reinstall ipod software or the new updater (just said "nothing to install"). I then went and erased my ipod using disc utility. Its now in disc mode and has no itune/ipod software on the ipod...
Can someone PLEASE help get the appropriate software onto my ipod or I'm gonna be stuck with:
    a) the world's most expensive paperweight......or
    b) a new flashdrive that will annoy me everytime i see it
I've already spent 6 hours tonight trying to figure it out and now i'm waving my white flag!
    Thanks in advance

I wonder if anyone else has noticed a wide variety of problems using either AAC or podcasts.
There seems to be a heavy theme where trying to listen to podcasts results in the dead-when-asleep problem where the pod is unresponsive and needs to do a hard cold boot (not sleep mode, and occurs whenever the podcast is paused or the pod goes to sleep manually or automatically when midway thru a podcast)
Also the folder/exclamation mark icon starting problems... seems to occur alot with ipods that are being used to play audiobooks and podcasts.
I had to erase/disk utility/restore my 4G ipod two weeks ago and ran it through three complete cycles of the battery playing ONLY music, all of which are still in the old mp3 style format. Nary a problem. Not ONE 'stuck asleep, needs hard reboot' issue.
The moment I reestablished all my podcast feeds and achingly resubscribed to the ones I wanted, the same folder/exlamation point and 'stuck on startup' not showing on desktop and clicking-ipod-HD- armature issues all came back... Im thinking if it will keep this up I will be forced to pay money for a flash based pod exclusively reserved for podcasts audiobooks and AAC files!
Tapping the SIDE of the ipod ( I see lots of ppl suggesting the back of the pod, which would serve only to bounce the readwrite heads into the ipod HD platter) has worked only to allow me to mount the ipod and quickly erase/restore it.... I hate the idea of havig to do this so often, its only going to wear the thing down fast.
Oh, its a replacement ipod I got while under warranty, which of course has expired... so the replacement was only good for a meagre two months so far before Im hosed. This bags chunks.

  • Lion: error trying to delete a partition with disc utility

Hi to all. Today I tryed to delete an old and unused partition with disc utility, but after starting the process an error pop up ans says: Necessary support for file system resize, like HFS+ with enabled journaling.
What should i do? I've created a cd with iPartition, and it works, but i prefer to use disc utility. Can anyone help?

Select the partition in Disk Utility and see if you can turn on journaling, if it's an HFS+ volume. How is the drive presently partitioned: APM, GUID, or MBR?
How old is this partition and how was it created?

  • Lacie 1Tb USB HDD not recognized, even in Disc Utility

    Hi to all,
I have just bought a Lacie 1Tb external USB disk. It did not work correctly under Mac OS X but it works when I use it under Parallels. It is formatted as NTFS and I manage to use correctly under OS X my old Lacie 250 Gb (also NTFS). When I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro nothing happens or sometimes a folder appears on my desktop (with the content of the HDD, read only) and in Finder the HDD is mounted with an icon with a W on it (not the usual orange icon with usb symbol). I cannot use the HDD. If I open Disc Utility the HDD is not shown at all but it appears correctly under System Profile. If I boot with the installation DVD and the USB attached, Disc Utility (launched from the DVD) sees correctly the drive. My conclusion is that there is some software that conflict with Mac OS X in mounting the device. Someone of you has any clue to provide? Is there a way to "reset" the way MAC OS X handles NTFS partitions (if it is a problem with NTFS)? The USB disk works correctly on another Mac with OS X (I tried it at the shop).
Thank you in advance for your help and I wish you all a Happy New Year.

    Thank you for your reply.
At the moment also the other HDD has the same behaviour. It looks like I screwed up the usual NTFS OS X handling What I did was to uninstall Mac Fuse completely (by disabling it and then by removing the icon from System Preferences, as described in the Mac Fuse help page). I had no need to install drivers to make the "old" HDD to work (when it worked . Also when I tested the 1TB HDD on a Mac at the shop, the Mac came with a clean standard install. The worst thing is that Disc Utility completely ignores the HDD presence so I cannot even initialize it. As I said I could initialize it booting with installation DVD but I would like to fix the issue. I removed Mac Fuse I had installed to try to reset the things... with no success I think that, even without any external software to read/write NTFS partitions, I should be able to mount the drive or at least work with it under Disk Utility, shouldn't I?

  • Brand new internal HDD fails again and again after clean Mavericks install - disc utility from Recovery HD can't repair

My old internal (self installed) Seagate HDD broke down, and couldn't be fixed with disc utility (from install disc). I bought and installed a new hybrid Seagate HDD, and did several clean installs of Mavericks, but the problem keep occurring - on the new HDD, just as it did on the old one.
I can't run Hardware test. Happened both on 10.9.0 and 10.9.1.
Will try to repair with DiscWarrior later.

If both the HDD and the hybrid disk are failing, your problem may be the SATA cable in the main HD bay. You might want to search eBay for Apple part # 922-9751, or if you want a tested cable, pay the higher price from ifixit -> http://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Early-2011-Late-2011 -Hard-Drive-Cable/IF161-086.

  • Keychains, disc utility and hardware test

(this might well be moved to a new topic)
I had three certificates in an old keychain on my 11inch mid 2011 MBA, no idea what they were or what they were for but one had expired (it was dated 20 June 2012 - when I bought my machine - so had probably expired in a year), one was valid and one was not trusted. Maybe a bit of a silly question to ask given I don't know what they were for but would they have been critical to running my machine? (it's working fine right now so probably not)
What is the meaning of the following keychain items/what do they do:
    accounts.google.com
    Apple Persistent State Encryption
    Chrome Safe Storage
    com.apple.ubiquity.peer-uuid.0A060ABD-5720-4425-A778-32F5C693DE8B
    daw.apple.com
    id.apple.com
    Apple Code Signing Certification Authority
    com.apple.kerberos.kdc
    com.apple.systemdefault
    Software Signing
Do Disc Utility and/or Hardware Test ALWAYS show up anomalies in hardware/software, or is there more than meets the eye in some cases?
Any help and advice appreciated - thanks!

    tragicallyhip:
My previous response will check for software filesystem/directory errors on our HDD. In re-reading your post, you may have a hardware issue. If you are able, boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer, and run the extended tests in a loop by holding down Ctrl + L during the tests. Let it run for a while, several hours if necessary.

  • Disc Utility - Clone Hard Drive

I want to replace my hard drive - I was considering using Time Machine to back up to an external hard drive, then restoring back to the new hard drive once it was already in my Macbook.
However, I read about a more efficient way of doing this. If I put my new hard drive in an HDD Enclosure, can I use Disc Utility to clone my old hard drive onto the new one, then swap it? I wouldn't have to worry about any settings or updates being changed, right? How do I do this in disc utility?

  • Mac wont start: Folder with ? and no HD found via disc utility - help

    Hi there,
Am using OS X on a 4 year old Imac. Suddenly when I started up I get a grey screen with a folder icon and question mark in it. These flash.
I tried to follow online help and installing the OSX disc to open the disc utility. This opens fine, but then I cannot see the HD anywhere.
At this stage not sure what it could be. There are no strange noises so I wonder if the HD is dead or not.
Any ideas or solutions would be great.
    Cheers

Sounds dead, but try a Safe Boot by holding down the Shift key at the startup chime. Give it much longer than a regular boot. It will be trying to repair the drive directory if that's what is needed, and if possible. Try Startup Manager and some other ideas here,

  • Burning DVD's with disc utility

    HI,
Ok so my imac was just basically rebuilt (new hard drive, logic board & power supply). I use to have Panther and was able to make copies of a friend's movie for him using disc utility with no problem. Now after the rebuild I have tiger and am having an issue. I am able to make a disc image and burn the dvd but the dvd won't play in the dvd player? It says disc not supported? I am using the same original that I used prior to the rebuild so I know it works or should work anyway. Any ideas? I need to make 10 copies of some old family movies for a reunion this weekend so I need to figure this out ASAP so if anyone can HELP I would really appreciate it!!
    Thanks

    Hi kimd78,
How, exactly, are you burning the disk images to the blank DVD? You should have no problems getting an exact duplicate if you do it like this:
Mount the disk image you want to burn to a DVD
    Open Disk Utility
Click on the icon in the sidebar for the disk image you just mounted (not the icon nested below it)
Go to the "Images" menu and click "Burn"
    Good luck,
    Daniel

  • Disc Utility doesn't see new hard drive

    Hi Everyone.
I've just replaced my old 20gig IBM Travelstar 4200rpm with a new Seagate Momentus 7200.1 80gig hard drive. I used Carbon Copy to back a duplicate of the info on the Travelsdtar to an extrenal fireiwre drive. I can boot up from the fireiwre drive. When I go to format the new Seagate drive, disc utility doesn't see it. I even booted from a tiger install disc and tried it's disc utiltiy. Still couldn't see it. Before I go and reinsert the old Travelstar, maybe someone can tell me what I am doing wrong? thanks Andrew
PS. The Seagate had jumpers on it. The Travelstar didn't, so I took off the jumpers on the Seagate before I installed it..

Hi Eww. You are exactly right. What was I thinking (not). I reopened the laptop and had a good poke around. The Seagate comes with a jumper diagram on the case. I was correct to assume that no jumpers means " master". Why I didn't see that last night only wine will know.
It's not safe to surmise, because one drive has no
jumpers in place or jumpers in a particular
arrangement, that any other drive with which you
replace it should be jumpered the same way. Jumper
configurations may vary considerably from one drive
    model and manufacturer to another.
If you find that the drive is already correctly
jumpered (with no jumpers in place), then the problem
may be a poor connection .
Yes that was it. In my haste to get the thing going I only connected one row of the pins. Problem solved. It's purring along as I type. For the record it is much quieter than the Travelstar. Thanks for everybody's replies.

It sounds as though the external drive may have failed. There's nothing at all wrong with restarting your computer with the external drive connected -- that's a perfectly reasonable and normal thing to do, done by countless users every day without any ill effects.
