OS 10.4.9 bug causes dropped networks with large files?

After updating to OS 10.4.9, I am no longer able to copy large AIFF files from an older Mac G3 running OS 9.x to my G5. (I had no problems with this type of file sharing using 10.4.8.) I have the computers connected via Ethernet and use AppleTalk and OS X file sharing. I do the drag 'n' drop work on the G3 (the only way do move files between an old Mac and a Tiger Mac, now). I can make an initial connection and am able to move small files back and forth, but when I try to drag a large AIFF audio file (25 MB) from the G3 to the G5, the connection immediately fails. An error message appears on the G3:
"G5 [IP address] via TCP/IP... The file server’s connection has unexpectedly closed down"
This has put a serious roadblock in my workflow.
Any advice? (Other than going back to 10.4.8, which is a pain.)
Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2.5 GB RAM | Safari 2.0.4 | QuickTime 7.1.5

As an aside, in my experimintation with the OS9.2.2<->10.4.9 problem, using the old limited version of Shareway IP...
http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/
that came with my PM/6500, I find that I can GET files on either Mac from the Other, but cannot PUT files on the other without OS9 freezing, and OS10.4.9 locking up until the OS9 machine is reset... seems the problem is one way!
Copied 240 MB files from the other machine either way, but trying to copy from the machine in use to the other one just doesn't work... ie. Download fine, Upload no workie in afp, smb, or ftp! :-P

  • DLSR issue causing dropped streams with Helix Server

It appears from my testing, research and confirmation from Real Networks that the QuickTime 7 Player has not followed the RFC for DLSR (Delay Since Last Sender Report) time stamps. I think this is causing movies created with QuickTime 7 Pro and streaming from Real Helix Server (in my test 11.1.1) to be dropped. Below is a post from another QuickTime user experiencing the same thing with some detail regarding the time stamp difference. In my case, I streaming some H.264 QuickTime Movies from Helix server and the streams are being dropped consistently. Real and WMV files are streaming flawlessly.
    My questions are:
Does anyone know if this is indeed a problem with QuickTime?
Has Apple acknowleged this to be a problem?
    Does anyone know a workaround?
What is very strange about the problem is that does not occur every time on some of my test computers. Out of 7 computers tested (both Mac and Windows) 2 have not displayed the problem on first try but I cannot for the life of me figure out what the difference(s) might be and why the time stamp issue would not cause the first stream to drop.
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/streaming-server-dev/2006/Nov/msg00027.html
Thanks to anyone who can help.

    anystreamcarl:
Did you ever sort this out? We have an Axis camera we're testing and trying to get it to stream through our Helix server. The player always stops showing content at 65 seconds but displays no other indications of problems (timer continues, etc). Since RealPlayer is actually calling QuickTime to display this, we have the same problem with using RealPlayer.
The same stream works fine with a VLC media player but I believe it's using a different protocol to talk to the server.
We've worked with the RealMedia support people now for more than a month and they have no clue what's happening.
    rtsp://vm.gaslightmedia.com/rtpencoder/petoskey_pointe.sdp
Does this sound at all similar to your problems? The only difference from what you describe is that it always stops at 65 seconds for any QuickTime player on any system. We have no trouble with any other types of streams and other QuickTime streams run fine.

  • Vexing 10.5.6 file system bugs causing crashes; wose with Server OS 10.5.x

We continue to experience occasional MacOS 10.5.6 data volume instabilities. Just today, the system reported that it could not repair a purely archival data volume at a time when I was not accessing the volume and had not asked the OS to 'repair' it.
Then when manually running a repair on that same data volume in Disk Utility, storage services caused a kernel panic crash.
This problem was more prevalent when I tried the server version of Mac OS 10.5.6, where the OS caused disk volume corruption on the dedicated TimeMachine backup drive, and then started to crash frequently in the face of that self-induced corruption.
There was no disk volume corruption and no crashes before 10.5.6.
I would like to know why there should never be a file system condition on data volumes that would induce the entire OS to crash. I would completely understand a forced dismount of the corrupted volumes perhaps, or continuing in a read-only mode until the impacted volume could be repaird, BUT NOT AN OS CRASH. Even attempting to use the repair function on the unmounted volume would cause a crash.
The reason I know this is a file system bug and not the hardware is that the same system can endlessly zero out the data on the same drives, copy large test files to & from the drives, etc. The only situation where these file system crashes happen is with high file counts as one would encounter on a backup drive or on a data archive drive.

This evening OS 10.5.6 reported that Time Machine could not write to its target backup volume on one of the new 1.5TB drives...the nightmare cycle of
    1. OS 10.5.6 causes volume corruption
    2. OS 10.5.6 unable to repair volume corruption, crashing instead
    3. OS 10.5.6 crashes over and over as it tries to auto-mount the volume
    4. hard drive has to be physically ejected and wiped using a WINDOWS system so that it can be used again!
This is a sickening tale of disk corruption woe that started with the OS 10.5.6 update.
As fast as I opened an AppleCare support case on this issue, they were closing it behind my back without resolving the issue.
The kernel panics related to the volume mount problem are simply outragrous:
"jnl: mod block start: buffsize 512 not a multiple of block size 4096\n"
KERNEL PANICS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN DUE TO A VOLUME MOUNT ERROR---EVER.
And yet I see in the support database that this is a recurring theme that has been seen in other OS storage situations, including Xserve storage where the bug would cause much more business damage.
    I want this fixed NOW.

  • Connection drop when transfer large file

We are using a IBM T40 (with 802.11b build-in). We are able to surf web and ping successfully. Once we transfer large file, the connection just drop and the debug log from the AP1200 shows:
Dec 18 10:39:57.095 H: %DOT11-4-MAXRETRIES: Packet to client xxxx.xxxx.xxxx reached max retries, removing the client
Dec 18 10:39:57.095 H: %DOT11-6-DISASSOC: Interface Dot11Radio0, Deauthenticating Station xxxx.xxxx.xxxx Reason: Previous authentication no longer valid
However, when we try using Cisco 350 PCMCIA cards and Orinoco, there is no problem with the large file transfer.
We have upgraded the driver to the latest version.
    Any help. Thks

This type of error is usually because of RF interference. When the AP sends a packet to the client, the client must ACK this packet back to the AP, if the AP receives no ACK from the client, it will resend this packet. It will continue this process for 16 times (default config) before assuming the client is off the network now (person moved out of range or powered off their computer) and will remove the client from its association table. I would verify coverage via a site survey, looking at not only signal strength, but also signal quality

  • Bug report - Finder crashes in Cover Flow mode with large files

I just came back from the Apple store and was told that I have discovered another bug in Leopard. When in Cover Flow view in Finder and trying to browse directories with large ( multiple GB) files, Finder continually crashes and reboots, oftentimes with 2 new FInder windows.
I created a new user on my MBP to remove the effect of any preferences and the problem repeated itself.
Come up Apple... get on top of these bugs and issue some patches...
Not the kind of new OS I expected from a top notch company like Apple.

Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
one thing that still confuses me... an icon file contains icons of all sizes, why does cover flow not select the right size icon to display?
thanks for that info V.K., much obliged.
    regards, Pablo.

  • [BUG] Performance Issue When Editing Large FIles

Are other people experiencing this on the latest JDevelopers (11.1.1.4.0 and the version before it) ?
People in the office have been experiencing extremely slow performance happening seemingly at random while editing Java files. We have been using JDev for almost 10 years and this has only become an issue for us recently. Typically we only use the Java editing and the database functionality in JDev.
I have always felt that the issue has been related to network traffic created by Clearcase and have never really paid attention, but a few days ago after upgrading to the latest version of JDev, for the first time I started having slowdowns that are affecting my speed of work and decided to look into it,
The main symptom is the editor hanging for an unknown reason in the middle of typing a line (even in a comment) or immediately after hitting the carriage return. All PCs in the office have 2Gig or more RAM and are well within recommended spec.
I've been experimenting for a few days to try and determine what exactly is at the root of the slowness. Among the things I have tried:
o cutting Clearcase out of the equation; not using it for the project filesystem; not connectiing to it in JDev
o Not using any features other than Java editing in JDev (no database connections)
o never using split panes for side by side editing
o downloading the light version of JDev
o Increasing speed of all pop-ups/dynamic helpers to maximum in the options
o disabling as many helpers and automations as possible in the options
None of these have helped. Momentary freezes of 3-5 seconds while editing are common. My basic test case is simply to move the cursor from one line to another and to type a simple one-line comment that takes up most of the line. I get the freeze most usually right after typing the "//" to open the comment - it happens almost 100% of the time.
I have however noticed a link to the file size/complexity.
If I perform my tests on a small/medium sized file of about 1000 lines (20-30 methods) performance is always excellent.
If I perform my test on one of our larger files 10000 lines ( more than 100 methods) the freezes while editing almost always occur.
It looks like there is some processor intensive stuff going on (which cannot be turned off via the options panel) which is taking control of the code editor and not completing in a reasonable amount of time on large Java files. I have a suspicion that it's somehow related to the gutter on the right hand side which show little red and yellow marks for run-time reports of compile errors and warnings and haven't found any way to disable it so I can check.

    Just a small follow-up....
It looks like the problem is happening on only a single Java file in our product! Unfortunately it happens to be the largest and most often updated file in the project.
I'm still poking around to figure out why JDev is choking consistently on this one particular file and not on any of the others. The size/complexity is not much bigger than the next largest which can be edited without problems. The problem file is a little unusual in that it contains a large number of static functions and members.
    Nice little mystery to solve.

  • Home Hub 5 Firewall bug causing dropped DSL connec...

We've had infinity 2 since the start of December (2013) and have had nothing but problems with it.  It frequently (5x a day atm) drops the connection, sometimes it fails to re-obtain the connection so does a full restart.
We had an engineer round who couldn't find anything wrong with our line, swapped us to another cable pair, but after a week of "stabilisation", the problems were still there.  We had a "new" home hub, which had been left using a test bench WiFi Id, so I suspect it was another faulty return they've given us.  It has been better - possibly 1/2 the number of disconnects, but still having problems.  We had another engineer round, who replaced the backplate on the BT socket with a new one, with better rated capacitor for filtering.  A few days later, not much better.
What I have noticed from the logs, is that the loss of connection frequently happens a few minutes (normally 2, sometimes 10) after the hub has blocked bogus (normally Chinese) remote admin attempts.  Is there another attempt they're making that kills it, or is there a potential bug in the firewall that trips the reset?

IN: BLOCK [16] Remote administration (TCP 211.75.112.37:61650->86.134.x.x:80 on ppp3)
It quite often drops the connection just after I have connected using my Android phone (which has no problems with any other device).
The log (before a reset) also includes bogus entries such as:

Again, the firewall kicking in, just before a reset?  Coincidence?

I'll have to give the line a few more days after last week's engineer visit before they'll listen to me again, but I'm considering cancelling my contract on the grounds they're unable to provide me with a stable broadband connection - despite the same line running standard ADSL perfectly well for 4 years
Oh, the HH5 also makes a quiet whining and ticking noise if you stick your ear up to it - is this normal?

You still have the same fault but not with the OR modem. Sounds like the HH5's are faulty

  • Import of mp3 file suddenly causing sync issue with existing files. CC 2014

    Hi all,
I imported an mp3 audio file and dropped it into my comp which contained other Video (422 ProRes) files that contained audio.  When I RAM Previewed the audio for the entire comp slowed down and fell out of sync.  I can't seem to find any way to correct this.  I have tried both Comp Settings and Interpret Footage but I can't seem to find a fix.  Anyone know of (or have experienced) this issue and know of a fix? P.S. I know mp3 files are not optimal for use, but I used it anyway, and have in the past without issue.
    Thanks,
    JB

After rendering out two sequences that had the audio sync/slowing issue, it appears that this is an issue with RAM preview. The renders' audio are in sync and play at the correct speed.  The issue of the RAM preview remains.  It seems like a bug at this point.  I updated to latest (13.2) version of AE CC 2014, reopened project, RAM previewed the comp and the audio was playing correctly.  I RAM previewed again immediately again, and after a spinning beach ball, it plays back out of sync and slow again.

  • Mac network with Linux file server

We currently have Windows XP machines networked to a Linux server via Samba. I know if we switch to Mac, I can still use Samba for file sharing, but how do I back up user data? Currently, we use roaming profiles in XP, so users' My Documents, etc get backed up to the server when they log out. Is there some sort of equivalent for Macs?

There is an equivalent, but you need to be running LDAP and your users need to log on using that LDAP identity. (But that may be what you are already doing...)
See http://mattfleming.com/node/190 for details. If you search the web you'll find more information on how to do it. (It can be done with SAMBA for instance). It is complicated. You might also ask in the Mac OS X Server forum.

  • Empty trash with large file causes immediate restart screen

I had a 200+ gig iMovie which I dragged to trash. During the delete, the system "crashed" with a gray screen prompt that tells me to perform a forced hard restart. After rebooting, I look at the file size and it's 70+ gig. So perhaps some bad sectors or something? Anyway, unable to trash what is left of this file as I get the gray restart screen every time?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
How much free space on what sized HD please?
If uyou havent already, start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Networking with XP - Files invisible!

    Hi there,
I work in a small arts charity and have previously been happily using an XP machine as a make-shift server in the office. As we were running out of space we added a second drive to the XP machine - 1.5TB, formated NTFS like the the first drive.
Now although I can mount the XP shared drive on my Mac and see its size, I am unable to see any files on it and cannot create a folder on the drive - I get a message saying  'The operation could not be completed as you do not have enough access privileges'.
I have spent a few hours now reading up on what this could be but am not getting very far. We do have an external IT person but he is still on holiday and is never much use when it comes to Mac's anyway ('Google it' being his stock reply!)
I suspect the issue is that I do not have enough permission on the XP side of things as I can see and mount the drive, just not its contents, so I may be barking up the wrong tree, but should any helpful Mac users out there know of a solution (or the best Windows forum to use!) I would be most grateful as I cannot access any of my files from the Mac which makes things reeeally slow!
    Kind Regards,
    Richard

    Try THIS and THIS also.
Felix and Joel are probably trying to figure out where all their bandwidth is going. I refer people to their excellent pages almost everyday.

  • Best way to set up home network with NAS

I'm pretty novice with networking, but do have some knowledge and know what I am trying to accomplish, but the two just aren't clicking.
Here's what I'd like to do: Have a storage central to our home office, which consists of two iMacs, a MacBook Pro, iPad, two wireless printers, two iPhones. I just purchased a 6TB Lacie 2big NAS and the 6th gen AirPort Extreme. Currently, I am able to access the storage wirelessly just fine, which is great, but I am working with large files (10gb-60gb) and needing to move them a little quicker. Most of the time, these files are being dumped onto the one iMac by way of Compact Flash cards via a highspeed card reader. I need to be able to access those files from (most importantly) the iMacs and (not so importantly) the MBP, which again, I can right now, but the transfer from CF card to iMac to NAS takes way too long wirelessly. So, what are my options? Do I get two more gigabit Ethernet cables and run them from the iMacs directly into the other two ports on the AirPort Extreme or should I purchase a separate gigabit switch then connect that with NAS and two iMacs or is there another option that will give me optimal transfer speeds from either iMac (including external HD's attached to the iMacs) to the NAS?
Thank you so much in advance.

should I have the base station set to run bridge vs route or does that not affecting anything?
If you have the AirPort base station set to "bridge", then the signal will pass through the AirPort and on to your modem/router which will do the actual "routing".
That's OK, as long as the modem/router also has 1,000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet ports.
However.....if the modem/router has slower 10/100 Mpbs ports, the Gigabit signal will slow down by a factor of 10 passing through your router, and file transfers will be much, much slower, as you can imagine.
Another way of saying the same thing is that to get faster Gigabit speeds, everything has to be Gigabit capable.
Unfortunately, Bridge Mode is the correct network setting for the AirPort Extreme if you have a modem/router "upstream" on the network.  Then you may get caught in a Catch 22 situation.
if I opt to use a switch (so I can add another 2big NAS), will that result in slower sports vs going straight through the AirPort Extreme
No, speed will not be affected either way, since it makes no difference how things are set up....so choose the setup that is easiest to implement.
In other words, if it is easier to run a single Ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to the Gigabit switch and plug other devices into the switch, then that is the way to go.  The performance will be the same as if you had run two separate Ethernet cables to the AirPort Extreme.

  • ITunes Causing Vista BSOD with RAID Errors

This thread is here to collate as much information and posts on the problem regarding BSODs occuring in Windows Vista and causing RAID errors to occur.
What Happens: Start iTunes and start performing a hard drive intensive task (Importing, converting etc). iTunes will seem to 'freeze', in some cases up to five minutes, but will regardless cause Windows Vista to BSOD. On restart the RAID array will complain of errors. Most cases are that restarting again and clearing the error will be fine, though there are some reports that people have had to rebuild their array.
Common Elements: Windows Vista, iTunes, Intel RAID Chipsets (ICH6R, ICH7R and ICH8R chipsets reported so far.

I'm running a dual boot with WinXP Pro SP2 as the primary OS, Vista RC1 on separate partition. I had Vista Ultimate (RC1) Release Candidate 1, a pre-release version of Vista up and running with iTunes version 7.1.1. Updating My Library, when system crashed and trashed my array.
I was running 2 400GB WD's when my RAID 1 erred. The array corrupted and after limping through several array rebuilds and Windows repairs, Win XP finally died and was unrecoverable.
I originally suspected an issue with Vista & iTunes, especially since I was running a pre-release version of Vista then I remembered reading a recent WD Support issue about some newer WD SATA Gen 2 drives failing in RAID arrays.
To make a long story short, thank God for my back-up NAS Drives, I lost my array. Traced the problem to a Raid compatibility issue with the WD drives running in full SATA ATA Gen 2 transfer rate mode and the Intel ICHR8 SATA RAID Controller. They don't play nice together when stressed with large file transfers. Replaced WD's with two Seagate 750's in RAID 1, running full SATA Gen 2 mode and have had no problems since.
Check out WD's Support forums, if you have newer WD's I'll bet it's a SATA RAID / Drive issue more than iTunes and Vista.

  • Cant network with windows

I connect to the internet through a wired netgear router. there are a bunch of other computers, all windows, on my network with shared files. when i click network under places i see a "windows network" icon, i click that and see a empty window where all the computers should be.
Not sure if i need samba to get this working since i thought samba is fopr sharing not recieving. either way i have downloaded it and tried to set it up. here is my smb.conf:
    [global]
            workgroup = WORKGROUP
            security = share
            dns proxy = no
            domain master = no

    [Media]
            path = /home/glynn/Media
            browsable = yes
            read only = yes
            guest ok = yes
media is just a folder with a jpg in it so far. thing is, the windows computers cant see the samba server either.
what am i missing? arch doesnt come with some kind of fire wall does it? do i need to open ports on my router? since windows to windows sharing works fine this is kinda wierd, its like i cant connect to anything on the network, but i am on the network since i have internet access
    thanks in advance

  • Browse windows networks with Thunar

    Hi,
I am running xfce on arch linux, everything up to date I believe. I would like to be able to browse windows networks with the file manager (Thunar). I do not need to share files or even access password protected content. I am simply looking to be able to browse public folders. (Without having to mount anything manually)
I found some instructions for installing samba and fusesmb, but then found a note saying fusesmb doesn't work anymore. A search on that showed that most people seem to be using gigolo now, but there is no wiki page for it, and being a noob I am hesitant to try to mess with it on my own.
If someone could give me very precise instructions on how to do this (samba/gigolo or otherwise, I don't care about the method as long as it's not terribly difficult) I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Ok, I installed samba and smbnetfs and everything looks good, the workgroup shows up in the file manager now. However...
None of the windows computers show up.
I installed exactly as the wiki said, using gamin and smbnetfs but not SWAT. I changed the workgroup to the correct name. Some other setting I might have missed that it needs?
