OS 10.4 - Network - OS 9.1: AFP-Protocol incomatible
Hi,
i have a OS 10.4 G5 and a OS 9.1 G4 in my Network. When i try to connect from the G5 to the G4 i get the message that the "AFP protocol" on the G4 is incompatible.
I've searched at google for hours and now i can connect from the G4 to the G5 via TCP/IP. But i need to connect from the G5 to the G4. Is this possible?
I also need to connect to a Windows NT-PC but untill now i haven't tried if this works, i think it wont!?
Greetings from Germany
Yesterday we downloaded a trial version of ShareWay, which worked on the one G4 OS9.2.2 that we tried last night.
http://www2.opendoor.com/shareway/shareway3.html
Our situation prior to trying Shareway:
1) From G5 Tiger, we want to connect to OS9.2.2 installed on two iMacs and one G4.
2) The connection works fine to only one iMac.
3) The other iMac and G4 report the AFP protocol error.
4) All three connection work fine from G5/10.3.9.
This morning I found these rather confusing articles, which we'll try next week. I'd appreciate reading about your experiences.

Can't see shared folders with AFP protocol
Hi,
I have an home network, with 2 iMac and a Netgear (DG834PN) router.
When I try to share a folder with AFP protocol (Preferences > Sharing > Sharing documents),
I can't see it from other computer.Just to dig in deeper with this. I'm having a similar problem (perhaps the same) as described above.
I'm using smbnetfs to mount a folder in my home directory to be my network neighbourhood. When I open it in pcmanfm I can see the work groups, and upon opening a workgroup it'll show nothing more. But in fact, when you open the terminal and do a ls -a you'll notice there are in fact folders corresponding to your computers in that workgroup. Browsing any further works flawlessly.
It's however a minor annoyance that pcmanfm doesn't seem to show them (you can however add a slash to your navigation bar and they'll show up there, rather weird). Has anyone found a way to solve that? -
I have some older macs and I also have G-5's, iMacs, eMac's as well. When we try to go thru the network to get files from another hard drive we get this message. "This file server uses an incomplete version of the AFP protocol. You cannot connect to it".
G-5's are using OS 10.4.10 and the older units are OS 9.
We had no issues prior to upgrading to Tiger. We are also using TCP/IP, and appletalk on the older units. We need to transfer files between computers, and are currently using sneaker net. Any ideas???
Thanks.
KenYou're not missing something... OSX.4.x IS!
OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8, (maybe higher, not sure), machine.
Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...
http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/
Which makes OS9 partially Tiger compatable. (Last I tried it was with 10.4.9,and communication was limited to Reads in either direction, Writes causing crashes on the OS9 machine, errors on the OSX ones). -
Afp protocol incompatible?
I cannot connect to my Beige G3 via ethernet. It is running 9.2.2
I keep getting the message from my G4 (osx 10.4.8) afp protocol incompatible. I am about 2 seconds away from smashing this worthless thing with a Hammer!
It has scsi drives inside so I cannot use a firewire adapter I have for transfering data. It does have a firewire expansion card, but i do not know how to connect thru that.
ThanksTo make way for the upcoming Intel Macs, AppleTalk and TCP/IP drivers for 10.4 were modified.
File Sharing via AppleTalk:
7.5.3 through 10.3 can share their files via AppleTalk.
10.4 cannot share its files via AppleTalk, and cannot mount drives from Macs that only want to share via AppleTalk. (AppleTalk printing in 10.4 is still supported.)
File Sharing via TCP/IP:
OS 9 and later can share its files via TCP/IP.
7.5.3 and later can mount other Mac's files on its desktop via TCP/IP if you use the "Server IP Address" button in the AppleShare Chooser Extension.
This tersely-worded article contains the explanation:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183
I think the sharing you want to do will work, but on the OS 9 system, you have to:
• have the proper extensions loaded,
• have entered a proper network identity and password, and
• have a valid IP address assigned, and
• have waited the several minutes it takes to construct the File Sharing database the first time
before it will work as you expect. -
After a Installation from Windows 8.1/windows 7 everything works fine. For example Install updates and Software. If I connect the first time a remotefx card i can use RDP as well. But if i restart the host I get the mentioned error. What can I do. These
Hosts are not in a domain configuration. I tried it too but there was no difference. I didn't discovered any errors in the eventlog, too. Only an actviex error. But same errors occurs with a succsefull rdp session.
Also strange is if i start the vm without a remotefx card it works fine again. Only session with a Remotefx card aren't possible anymore.
Is there a bug or something. I tried it many times with the same error.
Maybe someone can help me.
kind regards
TobiHi Tobi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
For a workaround, please try to perform the two steps.
1. Do NOT enable RDP 8 on the Windows 7 SP1 VM. You should install RDP 8 and update the ICs though.
2. Change the connection setting on the client from "Automatically detect" to "LAN"
Please check again below thread for information.
a. "The remote session was disconnected
because there were network problems during the licensing protocol" after enabling RemoteFX Windows 8 VM
(Please recheck answer by “dgeddes”)
b. "The remote session
was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol" After Installing RemoteFX
Hope it helps!
Thanks,

Network Device Usermode I/O Protocol and ConfigFree error
I have a Toshiba laptop and recently it has not started properly, displaying the following message: "Not found TOSHIBA Network Device Usermode I/O Protocol. Please reinstall ConfigFree. OK".
I am unable to use the laptop and it will not shut down without being forced (though once it did shut down and restarted OK, and then worked fine for three days We left it over Xmas and now it is doing it again). Can anyone let me know what this error message means and how I can deal with it (I know little about the workings of my laptop!).
We have Windows XP and are set up to a wireless broadband connection. I would be wonderfully happy if I could sort this as I have been forced to travel to work rather than work from home today because of it!!!!
Thank you in advance!Hi
The message is clear.
> Please reinstall ConfigFree.
So why didnt you reinstall this utility???
If you didnt create the Tools & Utility CD you can download this utility from the Toshiba driver page.
Then remove the ConfigFree from the Add & remove programs, reboot the unit and install the ConfigFree again. -
The vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'
Hi,
I have the problem that when I start a VM with windows server 2012 on a hyper-v v2 host, it takes very long till the VM get bind the static or dynamic ip adress. I tried both, static and dynamic. In every case I see at the event viewer the following error:
the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'
After a few minutes the VM gets bind the IP an everything works fine. But at the next time I reboot the machine the same failure appear.
Trying to use legacy network adapter results in the same problem. After this I tried to export the vm to a hyper-v v3 host. At first boot time
the problem didn't appear and the vm get's bind the ip adress without problems. Then after upgrading the integration services to hyper-v v3
version the same problem appears but without register it in the event viewer.
Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?
Kind Regards,
MarcusHi,
A MS KB records an issue when you run Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 based Virtual machine in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008R2:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2744129
There is a Microsoft update in this KB, you may install this KB in your Windows Server 2008 R2 and check the result.
While about this issue after you migrate the guest VM to Windows Server 2012 host, will it still has such error message after you remove all network adapters of the guest VM?
Install Windows update for the Hyper-V host, after that upgrade Integration service for the guest VM again to check the result.
For more information please refer to following MS articles:

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'
I have been searching for a fix for this issue for sometime.
The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'
and
The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'
this error have been posting on the host server 2008 R2, with a hyper-V running server 2012 R2, which is the eval version vhd from Microsoft.
I have tried the patch on the server 2008 R2 host and the nic delete and rescan option with varied reboots and such between each step of the process just to try every possible combination.
The error persists. Are there any other suggested solutions for fixing this problem. Also the drivers have all been updated along with the system firmware.
thanks,The hotfix states Server 2012 in the VM. You stated Server 2012 R2 in the VM. MSFT is very precise in this language - Server 2012 != Server 2012 R2.
Two distinctly different releases of Windows Server.
In this case the N = the running release of Hyper-V. In this case your Hyper-V Server at release version 2008 R2.
The +2 = the current version of Windows. In this case that is 2012 R2. Two releases ahead of the version of the hypervisor you are running.
I tossed in the link to Ben Armstrong's blog article as that is the ONLY (and still definitive statement) support statement regarding this configuration. He posted that article at my request after many folks posting in this forum with strange behavior
in this configuration.
"supported" in this context means that if you call CSS, you will be told the following: 'yes, you have errors in the event log. We will not fix that. This is an unsupported configuration. But that does not block the OS in the
VM running. If you want the errors to go away, we suggest you upgrade your Hyper-V Server to 2012 R2. That configuration is supported.'
That said, it can impact other functionality of the VM that rely on Integration Components in the VM and the Services of the hypervisor. There is most likely small things that will not work.

Network Load Balancing for AFP Sharing
Dear all,
Anyone can kindly teach me how can I configure network load balancing with 2 xserve?
Currently I success to bond 6 ethernet port with a virtual IP in a single machine and I have a link aggregation setup in my switch. It works fine.
How to configure 2 xserve with 6 ethernet port per each to have a single virtual IP?
my switch do not support link aggregation with a virtual IP to do the load balancing so I just can consider to do it in software level.
Anyone know whether OS Leopard/Snow Leopard can do it? Or any suggestion for 3rd party software can perform this?
Thanks expert!
KarlIt sounds like you need a load balancer. There's nothing built-in to Mac OS X Server that's going to support one virtual IP address shared across multiple physical servers.
Your problem, though, is likely to be one of throughput - I don't know any cheap load balancers that will sustain that kind of throughput, so you may be looking at some serious $$$$s.
There are some software-based load balancers that might be able to handle the load balancing side of things but many of them are designed around HTTP so might not work so well for other protocols.
In addition, the software load balancer is going to suffer the same bottleneck as your AFP server, but doubly so - two servers with 6 x 1gbps links each you have a theoretical limit of 12gbps.
To run that through a load balancer, the load balancer will need double that - 12gbps for the client-side, plus 12gbps for the server side. In reality you're probably looking at needing 10gbps interfaces and switches if you're really pulling that much bandwidth. -
Network Preferences Crashing and AFP Isuues
I have ran into a problem with my User Account on Mac OSX 10.4.11, I can no longer make changes to my Network Preferences, as soon as I hit the Apply button, I get the Beach Ball and I have to force quite System Preferences, If I check he Console I am getting the following message:
Dec 30 08:19:21 MarshallMacbook /Applications/System Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System Preferences: NetInfo timeout connecting to local domain, sleeping
I am also having a problem copying files using AFP from this Account to my iMac, but no problems wih my iMac copying files to my Macbook Pro.
I have re-ran the Combo Update 10.4.11, I have repaired permissions and ran Disk Repair using my Restore CD and the problem is still present.
I created another user account with Administrative Rights and this account works just fine, I can edit Network Preferences and copy files using AFP, does anyone know the solution? I have a feeling t is the Net Info Database, but have no clue how to repair or delete it.Are you out of HD or RAM space?

Strange network resource display, no AFP but get SMB/FTP access.
On a Mac OS X 10.4.6 system, when the network resources are accessed via the finder or the 'go' menu option, the system seems only able to access SMB or FTP shares, even though the corresponding machine is an Mac OS X 10.4.6 system
and shares AFP volumes with other Mac OS X 10.4.6 systems.
For example:
On the broken machine, I have:
Network->My Network->Big_Machine
Network->My Network->Big_Machine
Network->WinNet->Big_Machine
Network->WinNet->BigJunkWindows
When I access, say the first item in 'My Network', I get a FTP access dialog. When I access the Second item, I get the SMB dialog.
When I access the Big_Machine in the WinNet, I get the SMB dialog.
Needless to say, on a 'working' system accessing 'Big_Machine', I get the AFP
dialog under "My Network", and the SMB dialog under the WinNet.
... and further... 'My Network' is not the name of the WinNet...
Any clues appriciated...
John ClarkIt's not that AFP is messed up. I can access the machine via AFP from other machines. It's the stuff that is in the finder window that seems to be 'really' confused.
I'll have to test this when I get to the machine, but as I recall, if I explicit use the 'go' menu, then explicitly use 'afp://192.168.0.153' to access the remote machine, this works, and gives me the AFP prompt.
The behavior seems to indicate that the finder has recorded some 'path/url' wrongly, and refuses to be refreshed. -
Is there a workaround for afp protocol?
Hi!
We've got an older model large format poster printer that uses afp as the "link" to our computers. I've gotten two Tiger OS computers that won't see this protocol. Has there been something figured out for a fix for this? I know when I first started researching this that Apple was supposed to be working on a way to get this to work. Has this happened yet?Hi Kately,
I have the older AFP files if you would like them.
Contact me off forum for those.
Another option you can try is using SMB.
LIke this:
SMB://ipaddress
You may be able to make an alias for your other system and see if it will follow. -
OS X 10.5.6 server options missing? under afp protocol settings
Hi in setting up afp on a 10.5.6 OS X server, I do not see the selections for "Inherit permissions from parent" or "use standard POSIX behavior" in the protocol options settings window. Have they been removed? Do I assume all inheriting settings are now done via ACL's?
In Server Admin, the File Sharing settings are available when you highlight the server name in the left. There will be an icon for File Sharing on the toolbar and options to list the shares or volumes below that. The tab buttons will be displayed in the bottom portion of the window. Under the Permissions tab you will see two 'headers' displayed, ACL and Posix. Be aware, if you decide to update your server to 10.5.7 (you indicate 10.5.6 here) with the combo updater, a bug fix that was applied for ACL creation was not included in the combo updater. So if you select 'Propagate permissions', the ACL will not be applied. If you plan to update to 10.5.7, use the 'delta' update to avoid this problem.
If you have already applied the 10.5.7 combo updater, you will have to use the command line 'chmod' to apply the ACLs to sharepoints. There is a GUI tool available that will allow you to manipulate ACLs called 'Sandbox' that will do what the CLI 'chmod' command does. It's available here:

Similar problem on a Mac Mini running OS10.9 Mavericks. Note: Several weeks ago I posted a comment about Console displaying error messages when my MBP running 10.9 was connected to the DNS-320, but the 10.8 machine doesn't display those same messages. Might be related.
I had the same problem with a D-link DNS-320.
The following worked for me (Manual back up):
Set Time Machine backups off to allow manual back-up.
Create one alias of your NAS share in the desktop. (I don’t know why, I first had to create the share alias in a external USB drive and then move the alias to the desktop cause mavericks didn’t allow me to create the alias directly in the desktop.)
After using the “back up now” option in the time machine menu, just wait for a couple of seconds and double click your time machine share alias. This will mount the share and time machine back up starts immediately.
It seems as if double click initialize the communication and then the back up works normally.
I hope this helps.

IPhoto 9.6 is stuck at 1% (or sometimes 99%) Repairing
My iphoto library location is on my local network drive mounted with AFP protocol. It is Western Digital My Cloud. All my photo files are located on that drive
(speed is max of 1Gb/s)
iPhoto took a day or two to build the db with about 10k photos, total size is about 15GB only though.
I could never reopen iPhoto successfully yet.
iPhoto is stuck at repairing the db(at 1% or sometimes in between or at 99%)
Here is the complete report sent to Apple.

Regarding the file format it is some proprietary format(may be linux ext...), but it surely did work fine...
Please see below:
The Western Digital units mentioned above use a proprietary file system and cannot be reformatted as FAT32, NTFS, or a Mac File System.
The file system on the WD My Cloud EX2, WD My Cloud EX4, WD My Cloud, WD My Book Live, WD My Book Live Duo, WD ShareSpace, WD ShareSpace, WD TV Live Hub, My Net N900 Central, WD My Book World Edition, WD NetCenter hard drives support access from Windows, Mac and most Linux based computer systems through a SAMBA network sharing connection.
