OS 10.4 upgrade advisable???

I have an older G3 400Mhz 10G slot loading CRT iMac DV running 10.3.9. I'm giving this Mac to my nieces. I've supplied it with a 80G external hard drive, 7port USB hub and maxed out the memory at 1G.
They will likely use it for internet access (has wireless USB dongle), some writing (loaded Office for Mac) and one niece is discovering photography so I installed Photoshop CS.
Question - I know that to upgrade to OSX 10.4 or higher I have to purchase an install disc - no downloadable upgrades - but my question is, is that advisable? (Te older niece will likely get a new Mac laptop in a few months for high school graduation.)

I also have a 400 MHz G3 iMac DV SE (the smoky-coloured one) and it has 10.3.9. The internal drive also reads DVDs so I could install 10.4 if I wanted, but I haven't bothered, now that 10.5 is current. 10.3 works fine for me. My other machine, a G4, has 10.4 and there isn't really a lot of difference. It depends on the interface requirements of the other applications you use (for example I have to use older versions of Safari and FireFox and iTunes, but they work, so it's fine).

  • SEM / BW upgrade advise required - Please help urgently

    Hi,
We have migrated from a different company (January 2006) where they were using SEM -BPS and BCS. After the migration, we are not using SEM. Our BW version is 3.10. Our SAP R/3 version is 4.6C.
Now, We are planning to implement SEM- BCS. Our existing system component informations are as below.
    SAP_BW - Release 3.10 (Support pack 22)
    SEM_BW -Release 3.50 (Support pack17)
    SAP_BASIS - Release 6.20 (Support pack 54)
    SAP_ABA -Release 6.20 (Support pack 54)
    PI_BASIS - 2004_1_620 (Support pack 10)
    FINBASIS -200 (Support pack18)
    BI_CONT - 330 (Support pack 17)
We have the following questions. Please advise.
    1. Understood that the mainstream maintenance for BW 3.10 has ended on December 2006 ( The same for SAP_SEM: 3.50 also). So, If we upgrade to BW3.5 (Netweaver 2004), whether we will get the SEM 4.00 along with the upgrade so that we will have everything BW 3.5 and SEM 4.0 in a single box?
    2. I am still seeing that the SEM_BW version 3.50 in the system component informations. Does that mean that we still have SEM components within BW 3.10?  If yes, can we upgrade this to SEM 4.00 so that our BW system will get  upgrade to BW 3.5?
    3. Or what is the alternative, you suggest so that we will have SEM4.0
We are confused. Please advise at your earliest.
Please also send some links where we can compare the versions for BW/ SEM.
    Thanks .

    Hi,
With BW 3.5 you'll need to upgrade SEM to SEM 4.0.
With 3.1 you'll have SEM components if you had installed SEM earlier. You can upgrade SEM separately in this case. Check the release notes to make sure that it dosen't require any upgrade or patch upgrades to your existing BW components.
For your BCS implementation, check what functionality you need, because most of the functionality that BCS projects use are available with BW 3.5 and SEM 4.0. So chances are that even f just upgrade SEM to ver 4.0 you might still have to upgrade your BW to ver 3.5 in order to utilize the full functionality.
You can search this forum for links on the upgrade and comparisions. Other good sources will be the release notes for upgrades on the SAP site.
    Cheers,
    Kedar

  • MSI MegaPC 651 upgrade advise needed...

    hi guys, i new here
I'm planning for upgrading my old MegaPC 651 (major reason: no money... )
i'm thinking of adding another 1gb ram and upgrade my graphic card to 7600GS preparing for window vista. but after browsing through the forum i found quite a number of ppl having problem when adding additional ram and graphic card... just like to get more opinion before my upgrade, suggestion any1?
p/s: my PSU is 250w type, but most of the 7600gs i come across suggest atleast 300w psu, will that be a problem?

It is a memory issue.  There is something weird about this motherboard...
I got the system working, and i couldn't figure out what i had done differently.  I then installed windows.
I let it run for a few days until i realized that the RAM that was in there was the DDR 400 ram from my other desktop, instead of the DDR 333 that I had intended to use.
I took the DDR400 out, and put the DDR333 in and again.... BEEEEEEP. (8 seconds)
I put the DDR400 back in and still... BEEEEEEP.  (8 seconds)
I know neither stick of RAM is bad because they have both been used successfully in my other desktop system upon the first try.   Its like the MSI has some sort of connection problem in the memory bank, and I lucked out on one try and got all the connections to line up.
If anyone has any suggestions, please advise, because I'm back to square one again.

  • Cat6509 Upgrade Advise

    Dear all,
I have a Cat6509 running 12.2(18)SXD4 code to support the WS-X6724-SFP module. We are having connectivity issues, which I think may be related to bug CSCsa85588 (BGP tags not being forwarded). There is a fix in 12.2(18)SXE2. However, I am not sure which feature set to choose as the naming convention appears to have changed. Existing feature set is ENT W/IPV6/SSH/3DES LAN ONLY. The following feature sets are available with 12.2(18)SXE2:
    ADVANCED ENTERPRISE SERVICES SSH
    ADVANCED IP SERVICES SSH
    ENTERPRISE SERVICES SSH
    IP SERVICES SSH LAN ONLY
    IP SERVICES SSH
I have tried using the 'compare image' tool but it does not list 12.2(18)SXE2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Tracey

You can find about new package descriptions on CCO at
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps5460/prod_bulletin0900aecd80281b17.html
So enterprise services SSH might be the image you need to go if you are upgrading to SXE2.
Also, as an FYI, I checked on bug CSCsa85588 and found that the fix was ported to 12.2(18)SXD5 image as well.

  • Hard drive upgrade advise needed

i have four 750GB drives setup as two RAID 1 sets. one is the boot drive and one set it storage. i want to upgrade to four 2TB in the same config.
what's the quickest, painless way to upgrade and transfer data? i dont want to start from scratch, just transfer user account with all data

You really should already have a full backup now on external drive.
If not then add a WD 2TB or maybe 1.5TB ($109).
Like I said, two backup sets as minimum before anything else, and only then venture into mirror RAID - which I don't think is necessary or great idea.
RAID0 for performance, and first cover all bases with backups.
    Backup.
Pull the mirror set and keep off line - SAFE!
Create new RAID (if you must)
Test each drive first by itself.
    Then test the array.
    Then clone/restore from your backup.
You SHOULD have an external drive set, maybe Sonnet E4P and dual drive case.

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Firmtek/SATA2EN2/ (hot swap, tray)

Dual drive, not hot swap, cheap but handles two SATA drives for less:

I'd say you didn't have a good backup plan up until now...
thanks for the tip. i do have a 2tb external as a time machine backup

  • Upgrade advise

    Hello,
I just bought Macbook Pro 17" Quadcore late 2011 model. I want to take it to next level . I'm thinking of upgrading the hard drive to SSD and RAM to its maximum. I've seen Corsair's Vengence RAM 8GB one but it has speed of 1600 instead of 1333Mhz, I'm just wondering is it worth getting that? Will it just under perform at 1333Mhz or is it compatible even? Any suggestions on stable ram and best performace ram?
Secondly I was thinking of getting OCZ Agility 3 or OCZ petrol for macbook pro. They are all 6GB sata. Does macbook pro latest line support that much speed? Also any suggestions on that.
I don't want to break the bank either
    Thanks

    Hi Adnakhan,
I recommend buying memory that is supported for Mac machines. Crucial is a good place to get it: http://www.crucial.com/mac/. The newer Macs can go up to 16GB of RAM.
As far as your SSD goes, it should fit and work just fine with Mac. I personally would leave the SSD as a last upgrade, as it isn't terribly necessary performance wise. It will appear a lot faster, however.

  • Upgrade advisable?

I run on OS X 10.3.9 and want to upgrade to Leopard and the current iLife/iWork suite. Ideal option would be to buy a new Mac, however I'd welcome views on whether I could run these newer products on my old mac which is spec'd as below. Would performance be affected please?
    Machine Model: iMac G5
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 600 MHz

Thanks for the feedback. Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • Hp 550 upgrade of memory and cpu with possible unconventional tweaks. not ideal, but no other choice

HI guys, I hope you can help or at least give a point in the right direction.I'm a freelance photographer using much of the Adobe CS6 creative suite. After a disaster of a week I came home to find that the mother board on my editing workstation somehow is fried. I have no idea what happened though i wouldn't put it past my roommates carelessness.
I'm desperate. I need to finish my current job before I am able to afford to buy a replacement. So I am forced to rely on stopgap measures, out of desperation to finish my project, which are less than ideal, but so far are faring better than I'd hoped.
Im a photographer, Capture One, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro are the go to workhorse applications i need to work. without them i have no income. in order to have this machine run these apps,
the machine i have left is an old hp 550 which was gathering dust in the closet. It was built for 32 bit Win XP and in no way is intended to run the power hog adobe products I use, especially Lightroom.
Unfortunately Lightroom PS, and Premiere are 64 bit programs and LR and Premiere are hyper threaded. so I did research, and with the help of the windows 7 upgrade adviser utility's list of instructions I was able to get windows 7 Pro 64 bit to install and run.
I know this isnt the ideal machine or situation but for a few weeks, i need to make it work.
I really just have 2 simple questions. I had first gone to HP tech support. but they were not helpful. since the Laptop's warranty is long gone, they wouldnt even be polite and basically told me to shove off. Then on another forum, I argued back and forth with a know it all who consistently insisted that there was no way no how this pc could run 64 bit win 7, to which i thought what am i seeing things? its been running fine for 3 months. so i decided to come to you. your forums have been helpful on many occassions.
basically I need this machine to be able to run these programs for the next month or so, until i can purchase a new machine.
essentially, what I would like to know is will the motherboard support an upgrade of the processor? and if it will, what would you suggest as a replacement, considering my needs? The Core 2 duo is the barest minimum of what i can limp along with as photo/video rendering times are excessively slow.
next I was talking to the crucial tech support staff about memory upgrades. and possibly tweaking the bios to force it to run 8 gigs of ram. they said they cold find no version of bios that would make that possible, but that by already forcing it to run 64 bit, that already allowed the pc to utilize the full 4 gigs of ram, which had been impossible in the 32 bit format. He then suggested that i buy 2 4 gig modules such as 4GB DDR2 PC2-5300 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.8V 512Meg x 64 which can be seen at http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/memory/ct51264ac667 and try installing the full 8 gigs and see what would happened, saying he had a feeling i could get lucky. his logic being that the 64 bit system already opened up the ram limitations and who knows, you cant make an omelette without cracking some egg shells! he seemed very optimistic. So what do you think? does this seem likely to you because i would love it to work. or do you think the guy was a quack? and this whole endeaver is a waste of time and money?
also any other suggestions about how to weather this month long storm that dont involve suggestions of buying new machines would be appreciated!

    Here is the Manual:

Unfortunately the maximum configuration is a T5670 processor 1.8 ghz and 4 gigs of DDR2-667 memory which you already have. The CPU includes the 64 bit instruction set so it is not surprising it can run 64 bit Windows 7. My best advice is to save your money for when you can get a real working machine. The only other upgrade likely to help at all is a solid state drive, which you could use in the laptop and then also use in the new computer you are going to buy.

  • Acrobat 9 upgrade from OEM Acrobat 6

I've used Acrobat standard in my business since v4.0, and upgraded once to v5.05. I am now migrating to a new WinVistaUltx64 system, and find that Acrobat 5x-8x are not compatible with Vista.
In order to reduce my costs, I am thinking of purchasing an OEM full Acrobat v6 Standard and Acrobat v9 Standard retail Upgrade. I expect to be able to install the v9 upgrade on my Vista system, using the installation CD from v6 as legacy verification for the v9 upgrade. The OEM v6 will not be installed on the Vista system. I have done this previously when I upgraded to a full retail v5 from a full retail v4, but not from an OEM version. Can anyone with more experience with Adobe Acrobat upgrades advise me of problems I might encounter in this scenario?
I know that OEM versions don't come with support options, but I have upgraded OEM OS versions to retail versions before, and support became available with the retail upgrade. Will support be attached to the Acrobat v9 retail upgrade, if I am upgrading from an OEM version?

You have to update to at least AA8.1.2 to use VISTA and 64 bit systems. I think that version will do it. Of course at this time, AA9 is what is available anyway. AA6 does not run on VISTA as far as I know. Be aware, if you do forms you need to upgrade to a PRO version. It is best to think of Std as an economy version. It left a lot out that users of AA4 and AA5 came to expect.
AA6 works fine on XP. Even AA5 works fine on XP, at least it does for me. I use AA8.1.2 on VISTA Business and AA7 on an XP tablet. As for the OEM upgrades I have no clue to help you. As far as I know, the upgrade will be to the full product. I do think that if you upgrade, the previous version that the upgrade was based upon is not supposed to be used any longer. You did not mention that scenario, but just one aspect to consider in case you had been thinking it.

  • DMA options when upgrading on new MCS hardware

    Hi,
Customer has Publisher and a single Subscriber running version 4.1.3 SR1.
Customer requires upgrade to 6.1.2 using new MCS hardware. I want to make sure that I use the correct method for
upgrading to 6.1.2 on the new servers.
This is an overview of how I plan to carry out the upgrade:
    1) Backup existing Publisher database using BARS
    2) Install 4.1.3 SR1 on one of the new MCS servers which will be the Publisher
    3) Install BARS on the new MCS server (using same version of BARS that was used to backup
current Publisher database in step 1)
    4) Use BARS Restore to restore the database of the existing Publisher onto the new one.
    5) Install DMA on the new Publisher MCS server.
    6) Run DMA to export data from new Publisher.
Is the above the correct way to export data from the current Publisher
I'm wondering (that instead of carrying out the above method) if I should export the data directly from the existig Publisher ie by installing DMA on the existing Publisher then running DMA export. This would save me a lot
of time as it means that I don't need to carry out steps 2) to 6). I don't know if this is a feasable option.
Please could anybody who has done this type of upgrade advise me on which method they used for DMA?
Are both methods feasable - I could not find any details on CCO
    Thanks
    Gurmakh

You cannot use BARS for this
    I just did this:
    1) Install DMA on current Publisher - requires reboot
    2) Run DMA on current publisher - Note the publisher cannot do any call processing during this time - Took me about an hour and a half. Note that if there are errors you may have to fix them before you can use the file and rerun DMA. If you get errors I would open a TAC case to see if they need fixing.
    3) Put the DMA output file from step 2 on an FTP server (I think you can also burn it to CD)
    4) Use the 6.1(2) to start the install on the new hardware. During install it will ask you if you want to import old data, say yes and point it at the location of the data
    5) Complete the install
    6) Your done...

  • AccessViolationException after upgrade to 2008

I have just now upgraded from the crystal reports basic version that comes with visual studio 2008 to the full Crystal Reports 2008. On opening a project it came up with the upgrade adviser thing and I ran it through seemed to work and compiled properly on running the reports unfortunately I am getting an AccessViolationException.
    CrystalRepSource.Report.FileName = report2;
                    //CrystalRepSource.ReportDocument.SetDatabaseLogon(Application["user"].ToString(), Application["pass"].ToString(),
                    //    Application["server"].ToString(), Application["db"].ToString(), true);
//section fills the datasource sets the report title
                    FillStudentRegistersDataTable(studentDataTable, reportSource
                                                    , pfItem1, dcItem1
                                                    , pfItem2, dcItem2
                                                    , pfItem3, dcItem3

//tidy up bind dataset refresh report...
                    CrystalRepSource.ReportDocument.SetDataSource((DataTable) studentDataTable);
                    CrystalRepSource.DataBind();
                    CrystalViewer.ReportSource = CrystalRepSource;
                    CrystalViewer.DataBind();
The above is a snippet of the code this is a push report so it first fills a student registers data table. The error comes up on th eline underneath CrystalRepSource.ReportDocument.SetDataSource((DataTable) studentDataTabel).
I thought it might be push reports so I tried another this failed on trying to set logon info:
    TableLogOnInfo logOnInfo = new TableLogOnInfo();
    logOnInfo = CrystalRepSource.ReportDocument.Database.Tables[0].LogOnInfo;
Any ideas what the problem is as the error is a bit generic suggests possible memory corruption but that is definately not it. The reports were definately working pre upgrade and I do have a backup but would like to resolve this ASAP as I want to use some of the powerful new features.
p.s. this has service pack 0 installed

    guys....yet another upgrade question...
    ive got a dv6-1007tx

    PM45 motherboard
so i went to the hp website to check compatible processors and narrowed down my options to....
    QX9300...
    Q9100...
I really need to go quad cause i use video editing/converting programs and with my current processor my cpu is always maxed out at 100%...
im leaning to the Q9100 at the moment...its about half the price ($280 on ebay) of the QX9300 ($520 on ebay)...
does anyone know if there is a significant difference between them, besides the .26GHz?  i have been hearing that some processors are over-clockable and some arent...but as yet i have no real idea about over-clocking...i will have to look into it...
can anyone tell me what the negative aspects are of performing the upgrade that i am suggesting?
    will overheating be a problem?
    life span?
    anything else like that?
any help/advice would be much appreciated...
    regards,
                   kam

You cannot overclock a laptop. The BIOS are locked down so there is no way to adjust ratios, etc.
    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
The fastest processor offered on the dv6t-1000 series is the T9900 at 3.06 Ghz...not a Quad Core. For what you are doing (video), extra cpu cores will not be as useful as raw clock speed. Depending on what software you use, it may or may not even be optimized for 4 processor cores in any event. The T9900 is a beast. If you must upgrade (advise against it) install a processor that HP actually offered on the same machine. Otherwise even though you think the chipset and such should be compatible, HP's BIOS will break your heart.
Here is a T9900 from an HP laptop being offered on ebay for $200:

shelf price from mainline suppliers is about $400.

  • G42 cpu upgrade

I have a G42 1415dx with the S1 p340 CPU.  i really like the the laptop, and want to get as much as i can out of it.  Most questions about CPU upgrades advise to consult the service manual.  The manual lists several CPUs for AMD processor boards.  Will ANY faster CPU with a comparable voltage work?    Any recommendations?

    Hi,
This is not going to work, the P340 is a 25w chip and the N640 is a 35w chip. You need to use the SAME TDP value to be able to get it up and running.
    Regards.

  • I do updates and then have to reinstall previous versions - time and time again because of the number of unsupported add-ons

4 or 5 times I've updated Firefox only to have to reinstall the previous version due to incompatibility with add-ons / plug-ins / toolbars. I'm not a big user of Toolbars but I have some add on I use daily.
The last 3 times I did a "suggested by Firefox" update I've had to reinstall a previous version from my saved files in order to use Firefox. This problem has caused me to return to IE as my default browser - but unwillingly.
My current setup is Firefox 4.0.1 Beta and I had to reinstall a version 3 in the Firefox folder until addons starting working in this 4.0.1 Beta. However 4.0.1 has always hung up, even opening a tab and ceases to respond; sometimes for minutes.
I run Win XP - SP3 Dell Pentium 4 - 3.0ghz with 4 gigs of DDR2 - GX520. So it's not an equipment problem - (I have 4 PC's on my home LAN - although each serves it's purpose and seldom are 2 used at the same time.
When I installed 4.0.1 and then reinstalled 3.x ... I've been hoping for an update --- I love Firefox - have ever since first use - and then today I saw the update versions had jumped from 4 all the way to 7. I was enthused.
Same issue. On install over the V 3.x it showed 6 items of add-ons that were incompatible. I did not remove the V 7 ... I simple reopened the 4.0.1 beta. I use it for single page browsing as tabs locks it up or slows it to a crawl.
I'm having to continue using IE as my default --- I always keep a backup browser, but I don't care for much of anything that has an MS on it's name.
I've never posted to Mozilla ... but the idea crossed my mind over a year ago when I updated and had to back-up and reinstall. WHY can't a program precede the update to check for compatibility, just as an upgrade adviser from one OS to another?
This was the biggest list of all. NET Framework Assistant, Google Toolbar, Yahoo Toolbar, Roboform ... there were 2 others. I don't use the Yahoo Toolbar. I have Google Toolbar installed but keep it hidden except when I need it (for Page Rank, etc., I work websites).
But I won't use a browser that doesn't support AI Roboform.
I honestly love Firefox. I code webpages - .asp, .html and do SEO ... but I don't know the difficulty of writing even a small application. Would it be too difficult to have a small program that would check for these add-on incompatibilities before installing the updates.
I was impressed with 4.0.1 beta until I realized that opening a new window or tab bogged it down.
I want Firefox back but not with band-aids and work-around bandages. Is there a version between 4.0.1 and v7 which I tried tonight that would support my plug-ins / add-on. My experience with Firefox using versions up to 3.x has been great. But for months and months I open 4.0.1 and open my TV guide at ZapIt and then I've had to use IE 8 for all my web browsing.
My most important add-on is for Roboform and 2nd would be for Google Toolbar - but on a scale of 1-10 Roboform is a 10+ and Google Toolbar a 3.
If this post does not go to the support team at Firefox then how would I go about suggesting an Update Adviser prior to installing an update?
Anyone with a flexible solution - even short term - that would allow me to see Firefox improvements since the v4 I'm using would be more appreciated than I could ever express.
Since I've never posted before I'm not even sure how I'll get a response or be able to see any responses. Something during the registration said I could get an email when a reply was posted.
Thanks again for listening to me whimper and beg for a workable Firefox; I miss it.

this is all I can find, thank you for your time.
