OS 10.4 , upgrade unsuccessful

My recent attempt to upgrade my iMac G4 from OS 10.1 to OS 10.4. was unsuccessful. I could really use some help figuring out what to try next.
I encountered problems right away, on the CPU Drop In Disc 1. Disk First Aid kicked in to try to fix the problem. I kept seeing a message "incorrect threading records."
Ultimately, a message displayed that Disk First Aid couldn't repair the problem, and the upgrade failed. Not sure if this means there's a problem on my hard drive that prevented a successful install or what. I've never had any issues with this iMac in the five years I've owned it.
The troubleshooting section in the Tiger install guide seems to suggest that using "Erase and Install" is my only remaining option. I really don't want to resort to this if I don't have to.
The upgrade is a pack of five black CDs — the retail version, I believe. I haven't run any disk repair utilities on this computer in quite some time, and wonder if that may be worth a try.
Anyone have any suggestions on things to try that may correct the problem and allow me to do a simple upgrade, instead of an "Erase and Install"? Thanks!

Thanks, Steve.
My iMac is a G4 with 384MB of RAM, so I should be okay to upgrade, right?
You're right that you can't do a simple upgrade. I just tried running the disk repair one more time from CPU Drop in Disk 1. Because I have OS 10.1, I have to choose "Archive" and something like "Previous settings." It appears this option just saves your old system files in a separate folder, then imports your settings to the new system once you upgrade.
I just tried to run the disk repair on my hard drive. It was unsuccessful in three attempts. The problem appears to be "Incorrect number of thread records."
Is there some other disk repair utility out there that may be able to fix this problem? Or something else that may work? Anyone have any ideas?
I've never had any issues with my hard drive before when upgrading or installing software. I'd really like to avoid having to erase my entire hard drive in order to upgrade, but the manual suggests that "Erase and Install" is my only remaining option.
Help! This is frustrating.

Why do you need IAU schema for SOA? What components are you having in your SOA domain?

    Thank you
    Tom

I't not iWeb that got damaged but the domain file. The index.xml file is inside the domain.sites file that's located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Do you have a backup of that file you can revert to?  If so then do it.  Otherwise a long shot but try the following:
    close iWeb.
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

  • I have Win XP on a Dell 9100. I had FF 3.6.10 & tried many times to upgrade to 3.6.11 --- all unsuccessful. The next day, I saw 3.6.12 downloading. I seem to now have 3.6.12 . I don't know about 3.6.11 . How can I check on this?

I have had Mozilla Firefox for years. My computer is a Dell 9100 , and I use Windows XP. I have upgraded to each version of Firefox that was offered to me. Each upgrade was quick and easily done--up to, and including, Firefox 3.6.10 . I tried many times to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.11 , each time with no success. I have something like 21 copies of the downloaded Firefox 3.6.11 package. The next day, I resumed by quest to download & install 3.6.11 and saw, on my monitor, the 3.6.12 version of Firefox downloading. I don't recall how this happened. I know that I was only trying to download and install version 3.6.11 . Now, I seem to have, by looking at "About Mozilla Firefox" under "Help", Firefox 3.6.12 .
Q1. Is there a way I can check to see whether I have a valid download of 3.6.11 and/or 3.6.12 in my Firefox setup?
Q2. How can I know that all is OK, Firefox-wise? The answer to this question probably can help me a lot, in the future.
Q3. Can I delete all, or perhaps all but one, of those 3.6.11 downloads?
Q4. Any idea on why my difficulties occurred?
Q5. How might I avoid these difficulties in the future?
    Thank you for your help.

Firefox 3.6.12 is the current version and it was released only a few days after the release of Firefox 3.6.11 to fix a critical security issue that was discovered. The security fix was prepared and released within 48 hours after discovery.
I do not know what caused your problems in trying to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.11, but the point is moot now. Should you have future problems upgrading, please post back here and someone will assist you.
You can keep one copy of version 3.6.11 if you wish; I usually keep 2 prior versions plus the current version.
You can download the full version(s), not just the small update, from: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

  • Hi.  I have Mac os x 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4.  I always have problems watching video clips due to buffering and I am trying to upgrade my system (unsuccessfully!!). Does anyone know which I should upgrade to as I tried downloading version 10.7. thanks!!

OWC makes it easier to see what upgrades, not a real endorsement or that you need to but that would be one stop shop for components and get ideas.
    4 x 1GB RAM or above
10.6.8 preferably - run that for a month
dual boot and put Lion on another drive once you are satisfied
Lion does not have the support or drivers for the OEM 7300GT or do you want the X1900 Radeon, get ATI 5770
A backup drive or three, and start fresh on new system drives. Put the data on its own drive too.
Use Setup Assistant and/or Migration Assistant after the OS is up to date and you are satisfied (and make a disk image or clone the system for backup too).

The most common reason for not being able to connect to the internet after upgrading is your firewall keeping an unrecognized program, including a new version of an existing program, from connecting. Check your firewall. Remove any permissions for Firefox from your firewall programs list, let the firewall re-detect the new Firefox, and give the proper permissions for Firefox to connect.

  • How to recover from no-boot after unsuccessful software upgrade?

I have an Intel Mac Mini running 10.4.6. I did one of the larger software updates (a security update for Intel, I can look up the details at home if necessary) that requires a reboot. The machine crashed during the upgrade. After turning it back on, it no longer boots.
I'm not sure exactly what went wrong during the upgrade. I think the upgrade had completed and was waiting for a reboot. I walked away from the machine, someone else logged in and the system hung for them, forcing them to power cycle.
I have tried various boot-time keypresses; none of them work. The only way I can get the machine to boot is if I connect by firewire to a different machine.
What are various recovery steps I can try? Is there a way to back out of the update? Would disk repair work? Is there anything I can do short of a reinstall of the OS?
The usual Googling hasn't turned up anything specific. Thanks for your help.

I had not tried booting from the install disk.
I tried booting from the install disk while holding down the 'C' key. This allowed me to reinstall the OS and restore my old user settings. My machine is back to the way it was. Thanks.

I'm on 10.5.8 and bought the 10.6.3 disc to upgrade to snow leopard. Inserted the disc and followed instructions. It said it was installing. I walked away and when I returned the login screen was displaying. I logged in but noted that the version number is still on 10.5.8. I see the install data folder with today's date and a log file, etc. Now when I try to reinsert the disc, it ejects. Please assist.

Having a similar problem. I walked away for a few minutes and when I came back the disc had ejected and the computer was restarting. Still says 10.5.8. I inserted the disc again and tried to install, after about ten minutes it said there was an error reading the DVD, remove and clean it. Now, it just ejects the disc when I insert it.

  • Unsuccessful Upgrade to JRE 6u02

I have repeatedly tried to install jre 6u2 and failed using both the online and offline versions.
Each attempt results in the following message:
The software has already been installed on your computer. Would you like to reinstall it? When I click on yes it goes through : Preparing to remove. Then again results in the same message as above. If I click yes it recycles finally stopping. However, the update is not installed. It does not show up in the Add/Remove list in Windows Control panel.
I have also tried removing all references to JRE or Java using regedit and searching all folders on my computer. I am using ZoneAlarm Security Suite, but I have tried installing upgrade 2 with ZA turned off. None of these approaches have succeeded after many attempts.
I am using Windows XP Home Version OS and installing or removing jre 6u1 operates successfully. Because I could not upgrade to JRE 6u02 I did successfully install JRE 1.60.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There was just one reply with suggestions on how to successfully accomplish the upgrade. Unfortunately, after following the suggestions the upgrade still could not be successfully achieved. I still need some assistance in installing the upgrade. I would appreciate any assistance that anybody can offer.

  • I'm running 3.6.10 on a Vista box and for several days, Firefox has been attempting unsuccessfully to install an upgrade to 3.6.12. How can I get this update to either work or stop trying.

The next time it happens, I'll append the error message, and more details, but essentially after downloading something an alert box appears stating that Firefox cannot complete the update because it can't install the update. No reason given or actually even a name for the update.
