OS 10.5 color-wheeling for 10 seconds at a time randomly.

Hello, I'm running a gma950 core 2 duo macbook with 2GB ram. Even as I type this, every app, the dock... everything, will freeze for 6-12 seconds and color-wheel. At such a time, only the mouse and hotcorners work. I can apple-tab through programs but all are non-responsive. These freeze periods seem to come in waves... with about 4 seconds of downtime between each freeze, and 8+ freezes at a time. I have restarted my computer several times, and am wondering how to diagnose and fix this. Could it be a problem with hardware such as my drive? Would erasing my hard drive and installing 10.6 fix it? Nothing too important on here (not that it's unable to be used anyway) but it's obviously annoying. This is the only computer I have available. Thanks.

No, repairing permissions isn't necessary nor does it fix anything. Perhaps you need to reduce the number of applications you have open concurrently. You have the bare minimum of free space on your hard drive. You could replace it with a larger, faster drive.
Did you check out the site reference I provided?
Meanwhile you can do some maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Backuplist
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
iBackup
JaBack
Silver Keeper
MimMac
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
ynchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup

  • Why do I get the Mac spinning color wheel for 40 secs or more?

Vers 7.0.1 completely stops my MacBook Pro and shows the dreaded spinning color wheel. I turned on my Activity Monitor and have traced the "time out" to Firefox. Not a plugin, per se, but to Firefox.
I have NEVER had this problem before this upgrade. I turned OFF the syncing, thinking that could be the problem (I had been notified several times - 10? - that the syncing server wasn't working properly, so I thought of it).
Any suggestions how to stop this. TOTALLY annoying. Happens ever few minutes even when I have the browser open but am working in other programs.
It takes more than 100% of my CPU usage.

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Which Color Wheel, please ?

This matter has been bothering me for many years now. I wonder if and how many Kuler users are actually aware of this, but the Adobe Kuler color wheel is spatially based on some perceptual color theory and harmony, and not the color wheel for technical color systems and settings.
For example the primary colors in the typically and technically triangle of RGB or CMY are not to be found in a perfect 120 degrees angle in the Adobe Kuler color wheel.
This is the RGB theme of 0, 120 and 240 degrees in Hue values, spread across the Adobe Kuler color wheel:
As you can see in the above picture, Adobe gracefully 'bends' the space between the values to accommodate for the Kuler color wheel, which follows color theory and harmony. (No wonder Adobe Kuler is reluctant to reveal the advanced value settings of these colors...)
But it's not even similar to the distribution of colors in the Active Color panel of Illustrator.
The green looks similar to the one in the Kuler wheel, but the blue has shifted once again !
To remind you, below, an indication of the Apple color wheel interpretation of RGB:
Finally, there's even a clearer indication of the mismatch between these color wheels.
You can see the technically 0, 90, 180, 270, and 360 degrees setting for the hue value, but it's not at all the exact cross hair you'd expect:
As you can see, what used to be a quarter (90 degrees) in a technically correct RGB distribution of colors in the Apple color wheel, accounts for almost half of the Kuler wheel, while enormously truncating the differences between red and purple.
Due to the same difference, the so called "harmonious" effect of complimentary colors (which are supposed to be exact opposites), or triads (which are supposed to be spread 120 degrees apart from each other) falls to the ground when the spreading of the colors on the wheel seems purely arbitrary. One can only wonder which wheel is the correct one...
So when picking colors together with other designers, be sure to settle on a unanimous color wheel (Adobe Kuler, Illustrator, or Apple), before you start throwing your mentally creative darts at it...
I wish Kuler (and other Adobe popular applications) would at least warn for these differences, or let you pick a preferred color wheel.

    Hi,
Regarding 3rd party backup software, it is recommended to seek help in their official website for better understanding.
For backup issues, we could use the built-in Windows backup. We could do a date backup or an image backup using Windows Backup and Restore.
Detailed information for the backup and restore in Windows 7, we could check the below link:
    Backup and Restore
And here is a similar thread:
    Which backup software please?

  • Spinning rainbow wheel for long periods on File Open commands in Acrobat and Office 365 programs

    Hardware & Software:
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009)
77GB of free hard disk space
    8GB RAM
Running OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10.2)

I copied messages from Console after a File Open command for each of Adobe Acrobat and Excel (the selected location was Documents), given below:

Can anyone give me an idea of what these messages mean and how I can solve this problem?
If I'm not in the correct Community for this question, could someone kindly tell me where I should re-post?
    Thanks.
    David Walker

Yes; I have previously connected to an iMac at this location using File Sharing.  However, in my attempts to solve this problem last week, I had already unchecked File Sharing in System Preferences.  Tonight, I also deleted the folder from the window in the File Sharing System Preferences page, then rebooted.  The problem still persists.
I try not open files across a server line, i.e., I try always to copy a file to the local computer and open it there.  I may have gotten careless and tried to open a file from the Windows server with either or both Acrobat and Office 365.  Although this was an SMB share, is it possible that these programs are now trying to connect to the Windows server on a File Open?
I had about decided to quit chasing this problem; we spend about two weeks every two months at this Boston location, and I'll be returning to my Florida home this weekend.  So I decided I would see what the situation was when I returned to my native habitat, although I may be chasing this problem again in our trip to the Boston area in April.
The other thing I wondered (I guess I can't quite let it go), is whether there is a command line in Terminal that would kill all AFP shares.
In any case, thanks for your help; you're very knowledgeable.

  • IPhoto has a color wheel immediately upon opening and does not respond. How can I fix?

I recently uploaded photos to iPhoto and after getting a non-stop color wheel for a ~400 pic upload broke it into 2. After the first of the 2 I clicked on the event to open the pics and was greeted with a color wheel and "not responding".
Ever since, whenever I open iPhoto I just get a color wheel immediately when I move the mouse.
How can I fix this without loosing my pics.
    Thank you.

    Back up all data.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
In the Finder, temporarily move the iPhoto library (usually located in the Pictures folder) to the Desktop. Relaunch the application. It should prompt you to select a library. Click the Create New... button. If a new, empty library is created successfully, try adding an image, such as one downloaded from the web.
After the above test, quit iPhoto again and put the original library back where it was, overwriting the test library. Post your results.

  • My imac keeps giving me a spinning color wheel and hangs up the machine for a few seconds and sometimes minutes. What could be the program and how can i get rid of it?

My imac keeps giving me a spinning color wheel when i open and close applications and also when I am typing in programs. It happens and spins and then releases. I have done the following: Run virus software and found no problems, I have reinstalled the operating system, I have reloaded Iworks software, I have checked system prefrerences and still the problem continues. What could the problem be and how can I correct the problem?

  • My browser keeps pausing and giving me the color wheel every few seconds

Whenever I'm using Firefox my browser pauses every few seconds and if I am typing something nothing comes out, or the color wheel comes out (I'm on a Mac), if I'm watching a video it pauses every few seconds... it's sort of maddening. I do have about 20 tabs open at a time, I don't know if that is what causes it. It doesn't seem to happen when I am in Safari.

  • Spinning color wheel whenever computer is used after idle for a few minutes

Whenever I try to use my iMac after it's been idle for a few minutes there is a 3-5 second delay while the color wheel spins. This happens in all programs. I have deleted the plist power settings and all sleep options and processor options have been tried to no avail. The mouse remains responsive and I can move the cursor but whenever I click or try to execute any operations the color wheel appears.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    iMac G5 rev B   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks, but no Norton installed. It gets a little stranger; I reinstalled the system software with an archive and save. Now I still get the delay after the computer is idle for a few minutes, but I no longer get the color wheel. Example, if I start iTunes and then wait about 2-3 minutes when I hit play the play button turns blue but it takes several seconds before the song plays. Before I reinstalled I would have the same delay only I would get the color wheel.

Consider adding more memory. Be sure you have adequate free space on the hard drive - 15 GBs or 10% of the drive's capacity, whichever is greater. Do not run too many applications concurrently. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving the SBBOD.
    Do some maintenance:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • Color wheel pops up for minutes on end when trying to perform simple tasks?

Ever since last night, my Macbook Pro (purchased in September of 2009), has been incredibly slow. I noticed it first while trying to browse the web. Out of nowhere, while doing things, like browsing Facebook, that I could normally do easily and without incident, the color wheel/beach ball/rainbow wheel/etc. would appear for what felt like an eternity, and for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Firefox was the only application I had running, and there was nothing excessive being done. After several more instances in the next few minutes, I tried my luck with Safari. Same result. Then, I realized it wasn't  just confined to web browsing. Even trying to open a Finder window would cause the color wheel to come up. Every simple action that used to take mere milliseconds to complete now can take up to 5 minutes to unfreeze. After I finally managed to get my laptop to recognize the external hard drive I plugged in so that I could try and use Time Machine to back up the more than 200 gigabytes that occupy my dying hard drive, the back up failed after an hour. This may or may not be related, as I noticed that the icon for the external hard drive no longer showed on my desktop. I have scanned my computer using a virus scanner obtained from the App Store a year or two ago. Nothing turned up. Finally, I have tried both restarting and shutting down my computer, yet all that that has shown me is that start-up is now a laborous process as well. For the first time, it showed me a loading bar under the gray Apple logo that remained empty for a few minutes, until it finally disappeared entirely and the operating system booted up. My attempt at entering Safe Mode on startup also failed, leaving me with nothing but a white screen that forced me to manually shut down my computer and give up in desperation. I'm planning on taking my Macbook to the Apple Store to see what can be done before irreparable damage is inflicted to my hard drive, because I value many of the files that have been added since my last back up several months ago. If any of you have had similar problems or have any idea what is going on, please let me know. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Danny

It sounds like either data corruption, malware, bad sectors on the drive (moved it while it's opearating? a no-no) or the drive is possibly failing.
I'll give you a bunch of links and you decide what you want to do.
Apple is just going to charge you to replace the drive and not save your data.
If you want to recover your data and can't fix things yourself, take the machine to a local Mac repair shop as it's rather simple to replace the drive and Apple might not have one for a older SATA using machine aslo they specialize in data recovery efforts also. Apple doesn't.
You also can replace the drive yourself too.

If you're really running iOS 8, you should be posting in the Developer's Forum, as you well know since you signed an NDA when you signed up for the Developer's program.

When I am in e-mail, I sometimes get the spinning color wheel, which lock up everything. when it doesn't go away, I see on the activity monitor, that CPU usage is very high (99%), for a process calles " Safari web content'. When I click on the proccess and quite, the CPUusage goes way down. Problem is that I have to then log back in to e-mail. What can I do to eliminate this proble.  thanks

How much FREE RAM do you have when this occurs. It's easy to tell, when it beach balls open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) click the System Memory tab and note how much FREE RAM is listed. If it's 500MB or less it's time for a RAM upgrade.
