OS 10.5 upgrade and security

Okay I know this isn't really the place for this, but...... I have a 1.6GHz IMac running 10.3.9 and need to upgrade to 10.4 for next years TurboTax. I'm considering going to 10.5 when it comes out and skipping 10.4.
First can this be done?
Second, I'm currently using Norton SystemWorks version 3; any suggestions what similar product will work with 10.5?

Yes

Get rid of it. It's not even compatible with Panther or Tiger according to Symantec. There are no viruses currently active for OS X so virus software is unneeded. If you feel naked without it you can use the free ClamXAV - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Retrospect is not a universal binary and hasn't been updated in years. There's little likelihood that EMC ever will update it. Spring Cleaning is unnecessary.
Basic Backup
You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Look for them at www.versiontracker.com or www.mackupdate.com.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • HT201318 How do I contact Apple support to cancel my Icloud storage upgrade and secure a refund?

Today I thought I had to upgrade my Icloud storage to enable me to upgrade my operating system on my Iphone.  Found out that I could up upgrade by connect to my computer and using ITunes. Don't need the additional Icloud storage.  Cannot find where to contact Apple to secure refund.

Took a while on the phone.  Was disconnected on the first time.  Had to answer security questions.  Offered the Order ID number from receipt but apparently had no way to look it up via that number.  Searched for transaction via Apple ID.  The tech kept going off for some reason and finally said that it would be processed in two to three days.

  • Start up problems after Safari 3.1 and Security update

Updated safari and security update last night.
Safari downloaded and installed but there was an error downloading or installing the security update, I forgot.
After I restarted everything booted up fine, but was stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen.
Did a fsck and zap the pram, still stuck.
Today I tried booting up in safe mode, stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
Then I tried booting up from an external firewire dvd drive. Repaired permissions, repaired the disk, but it is still stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen. Help please...
    Thank you

Ok i had a similar problem, with all the recent updates for Leopard, including the 10.5.2 combo update... the 12" PowerBook G4 kept getting stuck on the grey apple and spinning wheel... if it managed to get past this it would get stuck on the blue screen!!!
The way i got around this, after trying all these other tips was: Archived & Installed 10.5; restarted, waited; downloaded 10.5.2 Combo update, installed; restarted, waited; waited; waited; after getting back to desktop, restarted, waited; then ran Software Update only installing one at a time, and after each install, restarted, waited; when all Software updates completed, proceeded with iLife updates etc... It took a while (still quicker than the 3 days of failed installs and updates) with a lot of waiting on the blue screen (5-20mins) but we got there in the end. Disks where checked with Leopard Disk Utility before and after, permissions where checked before and after completing all installs, also with a DW 4.1 optimization. Also note worthy is the RAM was upgraded from the initial 256Mb (!!!) with an extra Gb.

  • Help with simple OS upgrade and backup questions for a dumb old previous PC user...?

    Ok...have mercy on me, please...
I am not completely dumb, I know typical board etiquette, and I have searched for various answers (and found many)...but I just want to confirm my personal "research" and get all of this clear up before I proceed with this insanity.  I know I could probably search more, but this is taking hours, because of all my various questions, one leads to 10 more...
I have an iMac with Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 (which, though not mentioned anywhere?...is apparently "Leopard", right?  Told you I was dumb...)
Processor:  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
My main goal:  install an app that was in the Mac App store.
However, with Leopard, I can't access the Mac App store with Leopard, apparently.
I click on the Mac App store, and up pops up a Lion advertisement...telling me I should upgrade.  Ok, fine...probably a good idea, anyway...
But how do you upgrade to Lion?  Apparently through the Mac App store!
The web-redirects on the Apple site are amusing...taking me on an endless cycle...purchase Lion in the app store...click..."you need to upgrade to Lion"...OK...click..."you need Lion at the app store"...OK...click..."you need to upgrade to Lion to get to the app store"....etc.
OK...fine...google searches...ahh, I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first, apparently!  Yes?
(Maybe the Apple redirects should detect that I have Leopard, and direct me to a screen that explains that I must upgrade to Snow Leopard...and then Lion!  Do you hear that, Apple?  Thanks.)
    Anyway...so here's my plan:
    1) Upgrade to Snow Leopard
    2) Access the Mac app store
    3) Upgrade to Lion
Question A:  With my iMac (specs above), is it really advisable for me to do this?  Can my computer really handle Lion?  It seems I barely meet the minimum with my intel core 2 Duo and 2 GB ram...yes?  Is this a dumb idea, even if "OK"?  I know that "minimum requirements" on a PC often meant:  "Well, it will work...but it will be slower than a snail and crash if you run 5 programs at the same time" (which I usually do...)  I don't want to upgrade if the "minimum" is really not enough.
Question B:  If the answer to A is "not a good idea", then  do I just need a new computer (i.e. better processor)?  Or do I need more Ram?  And can I add Ram to this computer, and is it relatively easy?  I have added Ram to PCs tons of times, and you always have to determine type of Ram for your board, make sure they "match", or whatever, and then open up the machine and install.  Kind of a pain, but once I have the "right" type of Ram, opening the CPU and installing is within my abilities.  Will it be harder for a Mac?
    = = =
    Next:
When upgrading an OS on a Windows, you pretty much format the harddrive and start all over.  Back in the day I was a PC user, there wasn't really a "great" way to back up programs and files, so this was a nightmare.  You could NOT just back-up software.  You typically had to re-purchase and install it all from scratch.  Is this the same with Macs?  Furthermore, personal files were scattered all over the hard-drive for the individual software...so trying to back all that up to get it back on the new system = nightmare!  I hate PCs.
Anyway...so, my iMac has Time Machine.  I am pretty ignorant about this, and based on my previous PC backup program nightmares, I have a distrust for it...and don't really understand how it works.  But in any event, my external drive crashed a few months ago, and I haven't replaced it, yet.  So, I am replacing it soon and will get Time Machine back up and running...setting it up again, etc...leading to question C...
Question C: When upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion, what is the best way to ensure I keep all my programs and files.  My wife and I both access the computer, so two user accounts.  Does Time Machine really do a good job backing up everything and all things?  Is it just a matter of upgrade to Snow Leopard...then immediately to Lion...and then some sort of "Restore" from Time Machine?  Anything for me to "watch out for"...or to do when I buy a new external hard-drive and setup up Time Machine for the first time on it, in order to make this work well?  Will I have to re-install all the various applications I have installed on this thing?  (like with PCs?)
    Thanks for any sincere help.

Apple has discontinued support for 10.5, it's a plaque of our platform that Apple only supports the last two operating systems in circulation.
Where as on Windows you can run the same OS version for 10 years and get updates free (if not stolen), on a Mac we get one year, two tops now and if you don't upgrade and break all your third party software and hardware drivers in the process, then your denied security updates.
On top of that, the OS X upgrades tend to break your older hardware too, or slow it down so much that it drives you to want to buy newer hardware.
It's funny Apple places the AppStore on your OS X version along with iTunes and Safari updates, but then doens't supply necessary security updates, your machine may be compromised and here you enter vital credit card info, banking  etc. thinking you have a secure machine.
My advice, since that's a 10.5 era Mac, is to upgrade to 10.6.3 via this disk, then use Software Update until clear. You'll get security updates and your present installed 10.5 software will work in 10.6 using Rosetta.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
Rosetta is not avaialble in 10.7 so it could be a lot of your software will no longer function
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
I don't see the sense in you buying all new software for a machine that's at it's end of life stage.
You can buy software in the AppStore with 10.6.
Question A:  With my iMac (specs above), is it really advisable for me to do this?  Can my computer really handle Lion?  It seems I barely meet the minimum with my intel core 2 Duo and 2 GB ram...yes?
You will need to buy 4GB of RAM to run Lion well, the 2GB is just a bare minimum, and your processor is a bit dated.
Lion 10.7 is certainly slower than Snow Leopard 10.6, in fact so many wanted to go back to Snow Leopard and one of the resons was Lion was slow.
So I wrote a User Tip, here, but the Tips were implemented only recently.
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard

RAM is easy, you can buy it at Otherworld Computing or Crucial.com and install it yourself, there is a little door under the monitor.
    Videos online at YouTube.

Mac'soperaing system is seperate, it can be replaced or upgraded indepentantly of programs or user accounts on the machine.
There are some programs that install a kernel extension file at boot into OS X, those get knocked out, but those can be replaced with a new install of the software.
You should always backup your users files as those can't be repalced.
 Most commonly used backup methods explained
Question C: When upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard to Lion, what is the best way to ensure I keep all my programs and files.
OS X upgrades dont' affect User accounts but they can have a affect on programs installed, which most of your 10.5 programs likely will no longer work in 10.7
However they will (with a slight update) work in 10.6 just like before.
You need to backup regardless, I suggest a manual backup of users files to a storage drive, a 10.5 clone on another drive, the your ready to upgrade to 10.6
10.5 to 10.6 upgrade is rather painless, also 10.6 gives accelerated video drivers, so your machine will appear faster.
However once you install 10.7, you will slow down.
Does Time Machine really do a good job backing up everything and all things?
No, you shouldn't rely upon TM, have a multiple backup stragedy, TM files are hard to access directly.
Is it just a matter of upgrade to Snow Leopard...then immediately to Lion...and then some sort of "Restore" from Time Machine?
No need to restore, OS X upgrades and leaves everything else in place, just some programs (with 10.6) or a lot (with 10.7) when you try to launch them they will fail.
Also when you connect TM it will do a substancial change to reflect the new boot drive.
If you were using TM as a "storage drive" thinking you can use the archived versions later, that wil change upon the new OS X  upgrade.
But in any event, my external drive crashed a few months ago, and I haven't replaced it, yet.  So, I am replacing it soon and will get Time Machine back up and running...setting it up again, etc...leading to question C..
You need not only TM drive, but a bootable clone and user files on a storage drive.
 Most commonly used backup methods explained
Will I have to re-install all the various applications I have installed on this thing?  (like with PCs?)
No, depending upon what OS X version you stop at depends how many programs no longer work.
You will have to buy a lot of new or upgrade versions with 10.7, not so with 10.6 only updates mostly because of Rosetta on 10.6 and not on 10.7
My opinion, since that machine is a bit dated, is to upgrade to 10.6, Software update to 10.6.8, and stay there.
Later on 10.8 is being released after this summer, you may want to consider getting a new machine with 10.8 a few months later to ensure all the bugs are worked out of it.
Your not a comptuer savvy person, you like most Apple users expect your machine to "just work" I think going to 10.7 will be a bad experience for you.
10.6.8 will server your needs until 10.8 is released and on new hardware where Apple will hold your hand for free for three months, 3 years with AppleCare.
Your not a "OS X upgrader type of a person" and Apple needs to get of thier collective assets and pay better attention to it's most common users.

You’ve been infected with the “Flashback” malware. See this Apple support document:
    About Flashback malware
Back up all data, if you haven't already done so.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ Software Update
to install the latest Java update, as well as any other available updates. That should clear the infection in most cases. You must update to the latest version of OS X 10.6 or 10.7 before you can install the Java update.
The removal tool runs automatically in the background and is then deleted. Don’t look for something to click. If the malware is removed, you’ll be notified.

  • Cisco ise upgrading and licences

I nedd to upgrade from version 1.1.2 patch 4 to 1.1.3
the deployment is distributed so the split deployment technique needs to be used:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.1.1/upgrade_guide/upg_dis_dep.html#wp1052969
the guide is quite hard to follow as there are some licensing informations missing that can potentially cause service downs:
in particular my questions reguarding the guide are:
--- OUR licence is registered to the primary PAN node only----
    1) Deregistering primary PSN "D" node : what licence it will use? the inherited (10000 endpoints) or will it lose the licence completely and lock the network authentications?
    2) When node "B" will be deregistered and will become standalone what happens to its licence ? will it be lost? and what will happen to the node "D" when added back to the node "B" ?
    3) when I will switch back node "A" (after upgrade and registration to node "B") to its previous primary PAN state it is stated that the licence needs to be reloaded in it cause it was lost when adding it to node "B".... and in the meanwhile? no node will authenticate cause the primary node is without a licence?
    TY

    Giuliano,
De-registered node will always use it's own license, i.e. it becomes standalone box without knowledge or information of anything around it. Either the evalutaion or whichever license you have supplied it with.
License enforcement is performed by active admin node in cluster, according to its license.
    Have a look at:
    http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCug04405
I don't think license needs to be reloaded, but that may be just my memory not serving me. I'll double-check that one.

  • Unable to Reboot After Latest Apple Updates (SA-2011-06-23-1 and Security Update 2011-004)

    Hi All,
After applying today's updates (06/23/2011) in APPLE-SA-2011-06-23-1 Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Security Update 2011-004, my MacBook will no longer boot. Prior to updating, the MacBook workked perfectly (except for the occasional error entry in the system and kernel log). The MackBook model number is A1278, with a RAM upgrade (4 GB).
When booting in NORMAL mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 50 seconds. The device never shows the blue background or login window. It simply shuts down like the power was pulled.
When booting in SAFE mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 1 minute 30 seconds. The blue background is shown and quickly transitions to the login windows. About 45 seconds after the login window is shown, the machine shuts down like the power was pulled.
On the few occassions I logged in to take advantage of the 45 second safe mode window (before shutdown), I was *not* able to copy off my log files (in /log/var) to a thumb drive because the computer would not mount the USB device.
When I peeked at the system's log file, I caught the tail end of "signature validation failed" for a bunch of hardware - from video to audio. I can only peek because the computer will shutdown before I have an opportunity to study anything in detail. The failed verifications may or may not be related to the shutdown - signature verfication might be disabled in safe mode; I simply don't know.
It seems the world's most advanced operating system [tm] is performing the world's most epic failure. Any ideas to get this brick working again would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's what I've found:
    (1) I cannot run Disk Utility because I don't have my install disk handy
    (2) I cannot run Repair Permissions because Apple does not make a separate ISO available to fix their mistakes
    (3) There does not appear to be a wat to back out updates (ie, no Add/Remove Programs)
I was able to boot into safe mode and perform:
        > sudo bash
        $ chmod -R root /
Amazingly, the command ran to completion. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. As soon as some spare cycles were available (interesting indeed!), the machine shutdown.
+1 to Apple engineers for creating a broken patch
+1 to Apple quality assurance for letting the junk out the door
+1 to Apple, for not offering an ISO to fix a broken installation
+1 to Steve, who has managed to keep his anti-trust lock on the hardware and broken software
    Great job, Apple

  • Mail problems since upgrading to security 2015-002

Since upgrading to security 2015-002 I cannot send or receive emails. I receive an email alert saying the default ports timed out. Prior to the upgrade everything was fine. At present I am deleting all my email setting and reinstalling them but this only works for a short period before timing out again. Does anyone have a solution to this problem

There doesn't appear to be anything there to be causing that problem I have included a snapshot of the security window. Thank you for your help

  • No mapping between account IDs and security was done

I upgraded to Windows 8.1, it blew up my SQL Server Developer installation. So I traveled 400 miles to get my DVD and reinstall SQl Server. I saw on th eforum that several people had similar problems and they said selecting the repair option of the installation
would fix it. So I tried but I can't get past the "No mapping between account names and security IDs was done" error.
I suspected the login to be the issue from the beginning because the *&$%^$ Windows 8.1 update forced me to enter a new password as it didn't find my old one acceptable. Problem is, it didn't update it everywhere and I can't find where to change it for
SQL Server in this worthless version of an operating system.
I can't find the login for SQL Server in the the computer services anymore, it's gone from there. I used to be able to go in and manually start the service and change the password. But that great 8.1 update wiped all of that out and left me sitting high
    and dry.
Does anyone know of a solution? I need to finish this project and my hands are tied at this point.

Unless you used your own Windows user as the service account for SQL Server, the password change should not matter.
You talk about "Computer services". The place where to make changes to the SQL Server services is the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
You say that the SQL Server installation blew up. Is SQL Server not running (you can check this in the Configuration Manager) at all, or is the problem that you cannot log in?
I was considering to update a small netbook that has Windows 8 to 8.1 the other day, but to get the "free" update, I was told to go the Microsoft Store. I did that the other day from my Surface RT and that was highly unpleasant as it hi-jacked
by user id and replaced with a Microsoft account. So I am not making that mistake again. I looked at getting Windows 8.1 from MSDN, but then decided it's not worth it for a machine I only use for vacation trips. (All machines that I use for serious work

  • OSX Upgrade and new software purchases slow down Mac and Battery won't hold charge?

    Any assistance appreciated:
I have recently upgraded my OSX from Snow Leopard, which I was quite happy with, and was ticking over very nicely.
    And, today, I have problems???
I was using Snow Leopard, I purchased Mainstage 2 for my musical work... Nice piece of Kit..
I then notice 'Apple', bring out Mainstage 3 about 10 days later???
I check out the spec, will not run on my OSX...
I then check out Mainstage 3 and find that it would be a better version than 2..
I then decide that the extra stuff in Mainstage 3 is worth the price of an OSX upgrade, and the newer Mainstage 3 version although I had recently purchased Ver 2..
I do the upgrade, seems to have worked fine...
I purchase Mainstage 3, get that installed, and the Xtra's.... What is that all about?
It took me well over 12 hrs to get those...
Any road up, I get everything installed and functioning....
    Now, my Mac is Slllooooow..
The Battery will not hold it's charge... Runs for only 2 hours MAX and then needs recharging???
The MacBook was bought only 18 month ago??? 2011 edition..
I have an IBM ThinkPad 240 and it still holds more charge than my Mac....
    Help appreciated Folks...
For the dosh I have paid to 'Apple', the product and software should operate and function better than this???
And to honest, I aint spending anymore, until 'Apple' give me some answers on my problems.
Peace, Love n Laughter Cap Reg

  • IPhoto 5.0.4 Upgrade and Crash

I tried moving my iphoto library to a new location on my hard drive- followed all the apple directions for doing so.
Got a message that iPhoto couldn't find the library so I followed directions and opened it to where it was. Everything seemed to be working out fine.
Then it said, "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." At that point, I can either upgrade or quit. I try to upgrade and it starts running then gets towards the end with 5 seconds left and just quits. It shuts iPhoto down and I can't get in it to do anything.
I'm running version 5.0.4. I don't know what to do. I've tried to open it many times over the past week and always come up with the same thing.
Here is the long crash report if it helps:

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

    or
    2. Purchase a new Mac, as it will come with the latest version of iPhoto.
These are your only ways to upgrade.
    Regards
    TD
