OS 10.6.6: security updates and upgrades

i bought an iMac about a year ago, with OS being 10.6.6. I haven't brought it yet on the web ( i use this portable PC ).
Before getting it on the web, i'll obviously will have to
1 - update to 10.6.8   : is this presently the "top" update for 10.6 ?
2  -  from what i read snow leopard is a leap, SECURITY- -wise, behind even 10.7 ( mountain lion ). QUESTION: is an UPDATED snow leopard as web-secure
           as a 10.7,     8   or even    .9    ?

There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

It would be at least partly true to say that the later the version of OS X, the better the security. The downside is: will you existing applications run?
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
iCloud system requirements:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):

  • Virtual ESA appliance update and upgrade using static method

What are the static servers for updates and upgrading if you are using a virtual appliance ?
I know that the if you use a standard appliance they are:
    downloads-static.ironport.com: 208.90.58.105 on port 80
    update-manifests.ironport.com: 208.90.58.5 on port 443
    updates-static.ironport.com: 208.90.58.25 on port 80
But I see that my virtual appliance is trying to go to "update-manifests.sco.cisco.com"   - are there other differences for the virtual appliance ?

Yes, I can confirm through my own experiences over the past week that the Virtual Appliances do not use the same update servers.
Virtual Appliances point to dynamichost update-manifests.sco.cisco.com - 208.90.58.6. I'm not sure about the static update IPs, as the static sub domains do not seem to exist on the sco.cisco.com and it looks like Cisco is using Akamai CDN to distribute updates over port 80. You may need to allow iyour Virtual ESAs out on port 80 any, and 443 seems to be a single host.
Also I found the following article most helpful for Virtual ESA Updates:

  • Security Update and It's A Non Starter =)

    Hey,
Sorry ahead of time in case this makes no sense.
I attempted to upgrade yo the new Security Update, and it was optimizing the disk when it just seemed to stop. I didn't realise for a while but it was just hanging. I restarted the G4 to try and get it going again but all that's happening is the Apple logo and spinning thing! I've left it running, tried rebooting in safe mode. I've no idea where to start! Oh and to throw an extra spanner in the works, I'd a DVD in the drive and I can't get it out if I've to reinstall discs! =) uh oh..... If anyone has any advice, i'd really really appreciate it!
    Thanks
    Sarah
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Great! We are glad to hear that the problem is sorted.
Regarding your question - "What exactly was the problem with the update I dowloaded?" - here are my opinions. Most likely, there was nothing wrong with the download. The conventional wisdom, to which I subsribe, is that there is usually a pre-existing condition on the machine which manifests itself in the way that you experienced. For example, there might be some third party software on the machine which is not compatible with the update. The machine works fine before the update, but after the update, there is a software conflict and you have problems. This is certainly not the only scenario for trouble, but it is one possibility.
Should you use Software Update in the future? My opinion is yes, unless you want the software on your machine to stay at the current level. But, given your recent experience, it would be useful to take a bigger view and think about what happens if you have some other big problem in the future. For instance, a hard drive could go bad and you might have to replace it. Or, you could have another software problem, not necessarily related to an update, and need to reinstall your operating system. In these situations, what happens to your personal files? They probably will be lost unless you have instituted a backup plan. So, if this is something that you are not doing and you really would be upset if you lost a lot of data, you might give this some thought. There are some good discussions of backup strategies at Backup and recovery. You can also enter "backup" into the search box at the upper right and you will find lots of info.
    Cheers,

  • Service Packs, Security Updates and Cumulative Updates

I would like to find a  document that would help me understand and clarify Service Packs, Security Updates and Cumulative Updates versions and relationships.
Things like. Cumulative Updates include old Security Updates. Cumulative Updates do not overwrite applied Security Updates, etc.
    For instance,
    I am upgrading a server from: 10.0.5512 (SQL 2008 SP3, After Security Update MS12-70)  To: 10.0.5861 (SQL 2008 SP3 CU17).
Would the MS12-70 (2754849) I installed still be present after installing CU17? The reason for doubt was that I saw another version of MS12-70 that includes
CU 1 to 7(KB2716435). So makes me wonder about it.
I am probably not able to explain myself right but, the idea is to find a document that can explain how the build information and versioning works.
Some how I have the idea that Cumulative updates would not include Security Updates.
    Thanks beforehand

    Hi,
Below will give you list of Service packs and Cumulative updates for SQL Server
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321185
    http://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.co.uk/
Security updates are for Windows not SQL Server. SQL server releases Cumulative updates after that a comprehensive service pack is released which includes all fixes that were done in Cumulative updates.
Cumulative updates fix only a certain type of problem(for which they are created) and should only be applied if facing issue
Service packs are more through and Inclusive and should be applied and contains many fixes and sometimes introduces few features as well. SP are more thoroughly tested as compared to CU For Cumulative
    update from Microsoft:
We recommend that you test hotfixes before you deploy them in a production environment.
This cumulative package is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems.
This cumulative update contains all the hotfixes and all the updates that were included with the previous SQL Server 2014 update release.
Windows patch has hardly any relation to SQL server SP and CU.

The version of “Adobe Flash Player” on your system does not include the latest security updates and has been blocked. To continue using “Adobe Flash Player”, download an updated version from Adobe’s website.

You haven't actually asked a question, but as stated you should only download Flash Player directy from Adobe.
Nor have you said what version of OS X and Safari you are running.
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3 or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

Probably the reboot used to log into the Guest account and then your account again fixed the problem.  If often will.

  • Tiger going crazy on iBook G4 with new security update and Safari 3

    I'm running 10.4.11, 1.42GHz PPC G4 with 1.5GB of SDRAM.
So I ran software update where I noticed new Security Update and Safari update.
I tried to run the new Safari - Nothing, it's dead, no action! ( could hear hard drive but no action)
Today I tried running 'Software Update', it's spinning it's wheels, over and over again.
I'm sure Apple is working on sending me an email, as they got the skinny when the program crashed I forwarded the system message.
So a bit frustrated hear, I'm using Safari and getting to know Camino.
The Biggest frustration is that 'Mail' will not boot up so I use my internet to check mail, bummer.
So lets hope we get some info soon.

If you are operating behind a proxy server, maybe this will help.
With regards to crashes from behind a proxy server, I came up with a work around!
I have been using Automatic proxy configuration using a .pac file. That seems to be causing the error.
After inspecting the .pac file, and following the if, ifelse path, at the very bottom is a proxy address and port for unclassified connections. Mine looks like this
    proxy.sun.ac.za Port :####
I have put this into my System Preferences for all connection types, manually. This is found under, System Preferences: Built-in Ethernet: Configure Manually...
Then you need to go through the box on the left and check each box. As you do so, paste the default proxy address and port in the open boxes on the right.
Hope this work around helps. My Quicktime is still not working for my older .avi files.

  • Windows 8. Updates and Upgrade

    Hi.
I am sitting here installing win8. (I got it when it was still 8, upgradeable to 8.1). At the moment it is downloading and installing about 150 updates and there is still the upgrade to 8.1 to come. With possibly more updates.
Is it possible to make an installation disk which has all updates and upgrades incorporated, so if I have to re-install, it will already be upgraded and updated, so the only updates needed would be the updates published after the installation disk was
    made?
    Regards
Ps.  I'm not sure where to publish this, but tools seems a likely choice.  :-)

    Hello Great Dane,
Thank you for posting this query on the TechNet community forums.
From the description I understand you're looking for a way to include updates in your Windows 8.1 installation media, is this correct? Although this is not possible as yet with any official Microsoft tool there are a range of third party options available
to you that allow you to "slipstream" updates, and more, into your Windows 8.1 ISO. You can then burn that customised ISO to disk.
One such tool is WinReducer 8.1:

  • TA21328 I downloaded a security update and now I cannot access my online banking web site.  How do I fix it?

Does anyone have a quick fix for this?  I downloaded the latest security update and now I cannot access  web page for online banking.

It is not asking what part of your country you are in, but what country/region you are in.
Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed.
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

I downloaded QuickTime 7.x security update (recommended by my VP), but I cannot run. I am getting the message 'Unknown Publisher', but when I click run, nothing happens?

    Hello,
Seems someone from Apple corrected the problem.
I just downloaded a new version, again, due to upgrade to a larger HDD, and the new installer does have Apple name identified.
    So try it again.
    Good luck.

  • Slower MBP since 10.5.4 Most Recent Security Update and iTunes 7.7.1(1)

Anyone notice a significant overall slowdown since installing updates to iTunes and the Security Updates that were released recently? My MBP is an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.3GHz with 4GB of memory; it should blaze, and used to, but not anymore. Very noticeable slowdown overall!

After update 10.5.2 there has been performance issues on my MBP as well.
Response performance varies - like your laptop is becoming tired..................
Unfortunately, general freezing of the screen and all control (except power down), happens randomly - I read in another post that this only happens on Battery? - I believe this to be true...........
Longer app loading times and annoyances from spotlight indexing at poor times.
Window memory and size are lost on occasion - having to resize all quite often - crazy.
Dock unhide judder from first mouse activation - I know it's petty, but I think the Dock is worth it.
Sometimes, bootcamp partition desktop icon fails to appear with the other desktop icons, later after spotlight has calmed down.
The last bug is usually a sign to run Onyx maintenance and rebuild spotlight and other preferences.
    Great program.
This usually sorts it out for a week and then the symptoms come back.
Logic Pro seems to take more RAM (I know i need to upgrade - only 3Gb available on my machine - nuts.)
Still a very cool machine though - BF2 and Logic on one laptop.............
Any positive ideas and solutions are welcome.

  • Security Update and then...

I downloaded today's security update on 2 Mac's. My 12" Powerbook went fine...
After installing the security update on my 20" iMac ppc, I am stuck at the grey apple screen with the spinning gear.
    Things I have tried:
    • I unplugged everything external except for the keyboard and mouse.
    • I booted from Leopard DMG and repaired the HD.
    • Reset the PRAM.
    • Tried starting in "Safe Mode".
I am still stuck at the grey Apple screen with spinning gear...
Is the only thing left to re-install OS (archive install, preserve user settings)?
And if so, do I re-download and install the security update?
Please, any help would be appreciated.

Well, you've probably got to do the restore anyway. I think you probably should try the security patch again, only this time download it and then apply instead of using software update. Make sure that all devices except keyboard and mouse are detached from your machine. Repair permissions pre and post if the upgrade works. If you have Disk Warrior or something similar, run it after you restore your machine but before the upgrade.
    Good Luck.
