OS 10.6.8 idvd version 7.1.2 crash with JVC camcorder GZ-HM30BU
Has anyone had any difficulties with their idvd becoming non-usable?
I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 using idvd 7.1.2 and have a JVC camcorder GZ-HM30BU transferring HD video files using a SDHC card. After importing and editing using imovie, I share using media browser large (960x540). I then create a new dvd using idvd (DVD-R 4.7 GB). After the movie is finished burning the 1st copy ejects and then my macbook asks if I would like to create another dvd. When I insert the new dvd, my macbook pro ejects the blank dvd and states "done" even though the copy was not made. I must then select "cancel". After that, I am no longer able to create dvds using my macbook without replacing the idvd application from my backup disc. Has anyone had any difficulties with their idvd becoming non-usable?
thanks guys; but the problem is that iDVD does not want to burn a disk now from the original movie-project. i see the movie project on teh desktop and can launch it just fine - even play it through the iDVD application - but when i click burn, it asks for a disk (I insert a memorex DVD+RDL 8.5Gb 240 minute dual layer) and it ejects it a few seconds later. the IDVD progress bar still runs as though it is burning just fine - its progress drops from 18 minutes all the way to "less than a minute" and then it hangs. even if i insert a different memorex disk, it still doesn't start actually burning it. it only burned the very first memorex disk i inserted successfully. i have tried disk utility to burn from a .dmg file copy of the original successfully burned disk, but disk utility can't burn onto the memorex disk either. maybe something wrong with the super drive? thanks for your ideas.

DVD Player Version 5.0.1 crashes with Leopard
Good morning
Leopard is working fine on my PB, but when starting a DVD, the DVD Player crashes the whole system. It is so bad, that I have to "force restart" (on/off button) the machine.
Any idea how I can fix the problem. I allready reinstalled Leopard from the bottom up, but it did not help.

Leopard Grafics Update 1.0.
It is a separate file, which can be easily deactivated in the Software Upgrade Window.
Do not install this upgrade on a PB G 4 1.33 machine. If you do a "Archive and Install" to get your DVD back to work, make sure, that you DO NOT install the mentioned upgrade. I you do, "adios" DVD player. Shame, Apple did not tag this upgrade to not be installed on this models. It reminds me a bit of the PC world...

IDVD version 7.0.3 (1110) does not support .mov files???
After the last software update (01.26.09) I can't open my projects made with iDVD 7.0.2 just some days before the update. While opening an old project I receive system message about lost video files. When I try to drag this files manually, I receive message: Unsupported File Type: Broken Reference Movie in: 'name of my .mov file. Meanwhile, the files are on the same place as before.
Is somebody here who have met this problem? What to do? How to come back to previous iDVD version?Yes iDvd does still supports .mov
However, it's a QT Reference movie you are dealing with and anytime you move this file from it's original location you'll confuse iDvd. The solution is to re-establish the link so that it's no longer a broken link.
iDvd should give the option via a dialog box to find that particular asset before it proceeds any futher. Is it not offering you this option? -

Keeping iMovie and iDVD versions?
I am currently editing 4 movies, each of them is 1 hour long. The movies take an enormous amount of space so I am forced to finish one movie, burn it to the DVD, delete it and then continue with the new film.
Do you normally save both iMovie and iDVD version of your movies?
If you also save the iMovie version, do you save it in DV tape of in DVD? Which one has longer duration?
I guess if you do not keep the iMovie version, you need to re-import it if there are any subsequent changes?The only thing that has changed is the file extension (now .mov) and the application assigned to open it (QuickTime).
You can drag it back to the Desktop (best way to view the file in QuickTime Player) or directly into iMovie (to any open Project). You can also open iMovie, start a new Project and "Import" the file.
Don't forget that these are very large file sizes and import (even though no conversion is needed) may take a few minutes.
In theory these files are identical to those you may "export" back to camera (tape). No data is lost and no "conversion" to other formats is applied. -

Version 7.1.2 is. This is the version bundled with the latest iWorks. It has been around since 2011 as Apple has not updated the application.

No custom buttons in iDVD version 6
Unlike previous iDVD versions, version 6 does not seem to fully support customizeable chapter icons. In older versions I used to be able to drag a small QuickTime clip onto a button, and this would make the button display this short clip rather than the beginning of the chapter. Clicking on the button still started playing the chapter. Now when I drag and drop video clips, they replace respective chapters, and the button plays the short clip only instead of the chapter it is supposed to represent. I can still drag and drop still JPEG images, and they work as they are supposed to. Is there any other way to sustomize chapter buttons and make them appear the way I want?

If the video is one-hour long, the slide will advance by huge increments, and it is impossible to find the exact position you want to be played. On top of that in some cases you may want to add video clip that is different from the contents of the button. It was possible to do in version 5, and this is what manual says it should still to do in version 6. But it does not. This is likely a bug, I wish Apple had a way to communicate bugs to them. Do they read this forum?

JeremyThere is not an obvious link between the version number and the year the version was released. Unless you are a fanatic, you are not likely to know unless the information is provided to you. I have had macs for years and each time I upgrade the old software just gets transfered across. So whether was '08 or earlier, say '07 or '06, well you would have had to be paying attention, or even using the software, which I haven't always done. There is more to life that what is on my computer.

I am trying to make a dvd from a video I shot with a Sony HD avchd camera on a new mac mini running mac os x version 10.7.4
I'm using an up to date Imovie but copied IDVD version 7.1.2 and the support libraryt from an up to date macbook. The video is about 40 minutes long. It looks beautiful all the way from teh camera to playing it on idvd, but when I play the dvd on a player or in a computer it stops momentariily about every ten seconds and the picture is ziggy on diagonal lines.
Also, if I try to save the movie as a .mov file there is no audio.

Jaggy diagonal lines - mostly due to the use of iMovie'08 to 11 as they only deliver every second line in an already limited quality as interlaced SD-Video - taking away 50% doesn't improve a bit
Jumpy movie -. most often due to feeding iDVD wrong frame rate and forceing it to convert - IT DOES this BADLY. I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to do this and it does this even better than pay applications.
iDVD can only deliver 25fps (PAL) or 29.97fps (30fps) (NTSC) - so feeding it
• 24 i or p
• 50p or
• 60p
Will not improve at all.
If iMovie'08 to 11 are only option - Then
• DO NOT - Share to iDVD - as this too degrade the final product
• I do - Share to Media Browser - and as - LARGE - Not HD or other resolution as this too degrades quality

DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.
2. Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)

1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario

• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

How can I use slideshows that I have created in Aperture 3 (complete with captions and music tracks) in my DVD through iDVD version 7.1.2 ? iDVD Manuals that I have read seem to avoid explaining that export process. I'm using Aperture 3, Mac OS X (10.7.5), on a Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Anthony Zasadney, Bolingbrook IL.
Export the slideshow from Aperture as a .mov file and import it into iDVD.

IDVD 6.0.4 always crashes on launch with 10.5.2

I'm looking for clues here. iDVD has always worked on versions of 10.4. With 10.5.2, it always crashes on launch, and is therefore unusable.
I tried deleting its prefs file, but this makes no difference.
Any ideas?

I have burned around 300 dvds using idvd on this iMac. I have upgraded each time upgrades come along. Currently I have osx.4.11 and idvd 6.0.4. I use complicated menus and submenus but just off the idvd shelf. Submenus often are movies. Recently I downloaded the new QT 7.4.1 upgrade and perhaps a recent idvd upgrade to get me to idvd 6.0.4. I burned a few disks okay since.
Mostly I keep my movies on external drives but the dvd projects on the main hard drive. I have plenty of disk space, but I do not know how much contiguous space is on the drive. I have about 3 terrabytes of external drives. They are beginning to fill up. Less than 60 G available on any one of them. This has been my practice for a couple of years.
A few nights ago I began having problems with idvd. It would just quit working. The error screen said restart your computer by pressing the power button. It was the only option. Everything else was froze up. This situation repeated itself numerous times over the past few nights.
Last night I ran disk warrior everywhere and cleaned all the directories. It did not do much good. But I was able to share a 70 minute iMovie program to idvd and get the menus set up to where it did burn a disk. I inserted a second to burn and it did not complete the action. I got the screen that said idvd quit after shutdown. try again. I tried again, but nothing happened.
I do not expect that anyone here can offer me any help. Why should we all be having this problem without Apple putting some brainpower to getting it fixed. I depend on this equipment every week to build programs, and burn them to dvd. It is a miracle that we can do this at all, but since we can, and since apple is the financial beneficiary, I expect that they should get their technical staff on it and make the problem go away. As users, we should not have to try to figure this out. We do not have the keys to the programming.
An hour ago I tried to download a new iTunes upgrade. It started, but I soon got a message that said Something is corrupted in the original material--I suppose what is already on my computer. It would not complete the down load. I think this corruption is some sort of result of the last couple of downloads, QT and iDVD. Do these observations resonate with anyone? mx -
IDVD 4.0.1 Repeatedly Crashing at Burning Stage--Kern Protection?
Many of us seem to have a similar problem with 4.0.1, and mine has popped up since the latest Apple Tiger update. I go through the entire process of setting up the dvd through iMovie and iDVD, it goes through menus, encoding and multiplexing, but about a minute into the burning stage it crashes. I have done various things to work around this and despite following some of the suggested steps in this forum, I keep crashing, having lost 7 fresh dvds and countless hours waiting for the project to get to this stage.
I'm fairly fluent in iDVD and know to keep other apps turned off, to have enough hard drive space and to basically let it do it's thing overnight. There's obviously messed up in the iDVD software.
How to fix?

FSCK - File System Check
To start up in single-user mode
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.
When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line
Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the “-”)
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."
If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:

A few weeks ago, everything worked very nicely on my desktop computer. Then I succumbed to the nagging and "upgraded" to FF13, as well as the new Flash and Real players. Immediately, FF started crashing. First, it would instantly crash with any tab that had Flash embedded.
OK, I disabled and then finally uninstalled Flash and Real, but that didn't solve the problem; it would still crash 3 or 4 times a day, and with as few as 30 tabs open (the previous version could easily run 100+ tabs). Apart from those 3 "updates", the only other thing I had done was to update my existing plug-ins and add-ons, but I even tried disabling all of my plug-ins and add-ons; FF still kept crashing!
Today, I got fed up and uninstalled FF13 (after using MozBackup), and d/loaded and installed the previous version of FF. Did that solve the problem? Nope. Now, I can't get Tab Mix Plus to work, nor can I find my hundreds of old saved Sessions with Session Manager.
I tried uninstalling Tab Mix Plus and then reinstalling it, but I just get an error message saying it couldn't be installed. In fact, this is the THIRD time I've had to type this post, since the first time, I mistakenly tried to open a new tab to search Tab Mix Plus in Google, but the f{ck1ng tab opened Google right over this page, wiping out my almost finished post, and the second time, I went to Tools-->Options-->Manage Add-Ons-->Tab Mix Plus-->Options, and it froze up FF, requiring restarting it! Indeed, it seems as if the entire Manage Add-Ons menu is now buggy and generally freezes up.
I am *this*far*away* from ditching FF entirely (after 7 years of being loyal to it) and trying Chrome. It really is infuriating how difficult it is to get this straightened out! Any help would be greatly appreciated.Have you tried creating a new Firefox profile and testing whether that will run without crashes? This is a non-destructive test that creates a new settings folder. It picks up plugins from the registry, but otherwise looks like a fresh install.
If you haven't used the Profile Manager before, this article describes how to start up into it and create a new profile: [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]].
You can import your bookmarks by restoring a backup from your previous profile folder. For convenience of access, make a copy of your last bookmarks backup on the desktop. You can find that folder using Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder; navigate up one level to view your last active profile, then into the bookmarkbackups folder. Copy the latest .json file to the desktop. Then in the dialog pictured in the article "[[Back up your bookmarks or move them to another computer]]", use Restore > Choose File to import that file into your new profile.

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.

I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)
