OS 10.6 Airport incompatible with Sky routers

Hi guys,
this is my first post and also my first month "going mac" as a PC user I always wanted the new stuff even if it was a major step back in some cases...cough*VISTA*cough
anyway i got snow leopard on its release day pretty much (my mac had been working perfect) and once i upgraded airport was being completely sketchy, i can only assume they have not added the support for some back end routers...eg Sky routers (the ones you get with sky broadband)
in the mean time i downgraded back to OS 10.5, and a word of warning: time machine wont be able to recover any backups you made in 10.6 back to 10.5! so you'll need to archive and install if you want to do it

I am using Sky and had some problems with the wireless, to be clear I always use a wired connection but I like to make sure nothing is broken after upgrades. After the upgrade I switched on the wireless on the router and it would not connect. I tried to connect to a Linksys WAG54GS and although there was no internet (not compatible with Sky) the wireless connected and was solid.
The Sky router is a Sagem, not sure which model but I have had Sky since June (and its been good)
So I dumped the file 'com.apple.airport.preferences.plist' onto the desktop, turned off the auto channel setting on the router and made it ch 6, it now works great, I am using it now. Its using WPA-PSK, the router does not seem to have a WPA2 option.
Don't know if this will help but it is working now for me.

  • Mountain lion incompatible with sky go

Just been informed that mountain lion is incompatible with sky go. every time you use sky go it registers the mac as a new device each time. you are only allowed to register two devices per month so in effect you can only watch sky go twice per month!!! was advised by sky there is no fix in the pipeline. cant think the growing number of new mac purchasers are going to be too happy with this. Any one got same experience or solutions

Could this be approaching resolution? I just had a chat session with Sky and here's a screen grab from the session:

  • Using TImed Access mode on Airport Extreme with other routers in bridge mode. Not working as expected.

I am trying to setup timed access mode on my airport extreme in order to limit the times devices can connect to my network, but I am having some trouble.
My setup is as follows  Cable Modem ---> Airport Extreme ---> Netgear router
The Airport is running DHCP and the Netgear is in bridge mode. The only purpose of the Netgear is to provide a wireless access point for older b/g wifi devices. The Netgear is connected to the Airport by an ethernet cable from one of its LAN ports. All ip addresses are supplied by the Airport.
When I list a device mac number in the Airport extreme's timed access table it does seem to block the device if the device trys to connect to the airport's wireless service, but the device is still able to obtain service through the Netgear wireless service. I want the device to be blocked on both wireless networks. I thought this would work since all DHCP is on the airport. Why is the Airport allowing the device to connect when it comes in through the Netgear?
In this example the device I am trying to block is 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2.
Looking at the log on the airport I see the following entry when the device (when permitted) connects to the airport wireless
    Nov 30 22:43:12
    Severity:5
    Associated with station 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2
If instead the device connects to the Netgear wireless I see the following log entry on the airport (this connection gets through even if the mac address above is listed as blocked on the airport)
    Dec 01 10:46:29
    Severity:5
    Connection accepted from [fe80::223:12ff:fe29:acfe%bridge0]:54774.
It appears that the Netgear router (while bridging the network) is somehow modifying the mac address format in a way that the airport does not recognise it as the device to block.
What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks.

The Netgear wireless server has control over what what devices are allowed to connect.
Unless you tell the Netgear what devices you want to allow to connect, it will allow any wireless device to connect as long as it knows the wireless network password.
IF.... .you were using two AirPort Extremes, and not a Netgear, the two Extremes would communicate to each other....so you would only have to enter Timed Access settings on one router and other AirPort would automatically pick those settings up.
But, even this was not the case until the last year or so when Apple updated firmware.  A few years ago, you might have had 2 Apple AirPort Extremes on the network, but you still had to manually set up Timed Access on both devices separately.
Bottom line, you need to setup the equivalent of Timed Access on the Netgear router.

  • Z3 Dual with Sky Go in UK

So despite researching all I could, I was dismayed to find that my Z3 Dual (International Unlocked from Hong Kong I believe) is incompatible with Sky Go in the UK.
I get a message stating something like "The Sky Go Service is not compatible with this device"
I guess the model number or user agent is being sent somehow.
Anyone know any way around this, especially as I am using UK SIMs?

Hard to say for sure but if it works in Z3 and not Z3 dual it may be that the app is not listed as compatible with the model number. I recommend that you contact the developer of this app ([email protected]) for assistance.

  • Third party wireless routers incompatible with PowerBook airport

Hello there. I'm not having success with my problem so I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about incompatible wireless routers. In Mac help under Airport there is a curious statement that some hardware may be incompatible with Airport. As I travel through Chile, I have encountered several public Wi Fi hotspots to which I am unable to connect. I have all the TCP/IP settings entered correctly (IP address, router address, DNS, sub-net mask, everything) yet still unable to connect, including the Wi Fi at my hotel. They have provided me with all the necessary information, entered in the TCP/IP tab in the Network prefs pane, yet still unable to connect. DHCP this is not. I have never encountered this anywhere. I suspect the wireless hardware they use will not communicate with an Apple product. Could this be true? Has anyone run into this?
    Thank you,
    Michael

Thanks for your help. I tried all the encryption methods using the password given to me by the hotel and the coffee shops. Wi Fi appeared to be a complete mystery to them, although they seemed to have enough of a clue to suspect the encryption to be WEP. (Wi Fi has only recently arrived to Punta Arenas). I tried all the WEP and LEAP and any WPA, although some of the WPA methods wouldn't accept the password (the "OK" button was grayed out). It's got me stumped.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Why won't my airport express work with sky router

Im not sure if its possible but i am trying to connect my Airport Express to my Sky (G) router so i have a better wifi signal in the bedroom the other side of my house, will sky routers not actually work with anything not supplied by Sky or is this rubbish? Any help would be great please?

will sky routers not actually work with anything not supplied by Sky or is this rubbish?
A Sky Support Forum could probably best answer that question.
We can say that the AirPort Express can only "extend a wireless network" using wireless only provided that the "main" network is being produced by an Apple router. As far as we know, the Express is not compatible for this purpose with routers from other manufacturers.

    Diane,
I have added very few apps to my G5. The majority of my time is spent editing photos with PhotoshopCS3. I have software updates set to run weekly and have always kept them up to date. I really believe it's a disk permissions issue...but repairing them doesn't help.
*+Upon installation, I used Archive and Install.+* While I agree that Erase and Install may sound like a good idea, it makes me nervous. I do have everything backed up on a bootable CMS drive, but I'm a photographer and was hoping to not have to erase the G5.
Yes, as I mentioned in the original post, I've downloaded and installed the Airport firmware update. And all software is up to date.
All was working just dandy before the upgrade. Unfortunately now it's sounding like I may have to erase my hard drive and install fresh.
If I do that, is it just a matter then of dragging my photos from the backup disk to the G5? And documents? Etc?? The thought of getting all my photos and important information back on the G5 seems a bit staggering.

  • Apple Products no longer AirPrint with new routers

I have a OfficeJet Pro 8500 A910 Series printer and was using a linksys WRT160N V2 router (open without a password protection).  I also have an HP Laptop, a MacBook Pro Retina, two IPhones and an IPad.  All devices were able to print wirelessly on the Office Jet.
I sought to repace the router first with a Linksys AC1200 and then with an Apple Airport Extreme.  With both routers the HP laptop was able to print wirelessly to the printer.  However, the apple products could not.  All equipment is on the same network (password protected).  Sometimes the Apple products can see the printer and I think when first connected they will print.  But within a few minutes will no longer be able to perform an airprint.  If I delete the printer and try to add it - the printer disappears as a nearby printer and sometimes does not show up as a bonjour printer either.
While I can limp along with the older router, I worry that when it finally dies, I will no longer be able to use this printer wirelessly.  I have both new routers in their boxes ready to be returned - but perhaps there is a solution.
I have spent hours on the phone with both Apple and witih Linksys to no avail.  I do think this is an HP problem and so do they.
I have tried limiting the router to a 2.x Ghz - and note that using a 5 Ghs frequency makes the Apple products ever less happy.

    Hi @StarvationPoint,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I gather that since changing your router that you are encountering difficulties in using AirPrint from your Apple mobile devices.
I have included a post by @Shirlzz1 on the forums titled Help Determine if your router can support AirPrint with the Bonjour Discovery App. It will walk you through downloading an app that checks to see if the routers support Bonjour (I know the Apple AirPort Extreme does).
I’ve also included the Printing Over a Wireless Network with Apple's AirPrint FAQs document. It has some great trouble shooting steps in the “What if a 'No AirPrint Printers Found' message displays on my Apple device?” section.
Please let me know the outcome.

  • MacBook and MacBook Pro with 10.6:  Wireless Airport Issues with Cisco

Long Story but please bear with me:
Loaded SL on my daughters MacBook and my MacBook Pro. Internet worked flawlessly at our house (WEP encrypted) and on other public wifi. When my daughter went back to her sorority house at college 24 hours later, she could not access the internet using the sorority house network (Cisco Aironet 1800 router and Cisco Airo Access Points).
Her Airport on the MacBook appeared connected at full strength yet no internet. Two calls to Apple support (they were very nice) did not help. All the following were tried:
    1. Reset PRAM
    2. Deleted Airport and Safari plists
    3. Edited locations
    4. Removed Battery
    5. Others I cannot now remember
Still no net. However, she could 'pirate' and hop on line with other identified public wifi adjacent to the sorority house. I drove to the sorority house today and tried to get on the network wirelessly using my MacBook Pro with SL. Same identical results to hers. Another MacBook without SL works great and gets right on the network.
Is this some SL influenced issue with the Airport card and the Cisco system? Weird that both of our laptops work great with several other wifi networks but not the one at the sorority house.
Could much of what we all our seeing with the internet access problem lie not with issues within our software or computers but with the routers and access points not being compatible? I have very little understanding of this stuff (as you all can probably tell) but the Apple Support people acted like it was a old firmware issue with Cisco and not with SL. Not actually what I wanted to hear.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Your description there, particularly the last part, sounds like my problem. At home, we connect using Airport and ADSL which was OK, once SL had sorted out passwords.
At my office, where there are two wifi systems, I could not get on either, although did have IP numbers on both. The link to the outside world is via a proxy which uses a PAC file. Network Diagnostics reported each time (whatever I did) that the link to the server was OK, but the Internet was not.
I created a new Location with identical settings (typing them in and not copying) and the only visible difference is that the new location has no DNS numbers -- I had not noticed that before. The moment I pressed, Apply, the computer was online.
I was guessing that there was a conflict in a .plist file somewhere; but now I wonder if DNS might have been the reason (the DNS number usually used is the one from the router itself).

  • Airport Express with D-Link router?

I bought an Airport Express with the specific purpose of connecting an old 1999 iMac to the internet (D-Link wireless router) via the ethernet port. I also thought I could use it to connect other ethernet devices such as my HD-DVD player.
I tried to configure the Express with my PowerBook to discover later in the instructions that the ethernet port is disabled when configuring the unit as wireless bridge/client. It sounds odd, becuase I can't understand the use of it, then. The range extender configuration which enables ethernet, apparently only works with an Airport base station. I admit I'm not very networking-savvy. Did I do something wrong? Am I understanding the instructions correctly?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few that are known to work are:
o another Airport Express Base Station
o 802.11g Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54

  • Does it work with Sky modem/router?

    Hi folks,
does the airport express base station work with Sky broadband?
I want to connect the base station to my router via ethernet cable (in 2 different rooms) and use it to extend my wireless range, and print wirelessly.
Anybody done this with the standard issue sky modem/router?
    Cheers

    Hi
The 'standard issue' modem/router as provided by Sky used to be the NetGear DG834G IIRC? If it still is this model then yes it works. IMO it's best to attach the AE and use it in Bridge Mode. Depends on what you want to achieve though.

  • Simple directions to extend airport extreme with airport express?

I can't believe how complicated this has turned out to be. The apple page directions are totally outdated (looks like Tiger) and every online explanation seems to involve older g routers.
I have the latest airport extreme n (not a time capsule) as my main wireless router, and an airport express n which I just bought from apple to extend the wireless signal in my house.
While my Airport Utility shows both routers and allows me to configure them as a bridged or extended wireless network, none of my apple products (ipad, macbook pro, imac, G5 tower) can detect it on wi-fi.
Can anyone give me a simple step-by-step explanation on how to extend my extreme's wireless signal using the express?
    Thanks in advance!

+Can anyone give me a simple step-by-step explanation on how to extend my extreme's wireless signal using the express?+
Sure, here you go. You can also reference pages 43-44 in the Apple AirPort Networks Guide.
    _On the AirPort Extreme (AEBS)_
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Your Wireless Mode should already be set to “Create a Wireless Network”
Make sure there is a check mark next to “Allow this network to be extended”
    Update to save changes
    _On the AirPort Express (AX)_
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup.
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode…should be set to “Extend a wireless network”. If you don’t see this choice, hold down the option key when you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name…..the name of the main AEBS network should appear as a choice. Click to select it.
Put a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security…...exact same setting as your AEBS
Wireless Password…..exact same setting as your AEBS
Click the Base Station tab to assign a name and device password for the AX
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes if you wish
    Update to save settings.
The real trick is to find the right location for the AX. Start with it positioned approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance between the AEBS and the area you want to cover. Then experiment by moving the AX closer or further away for the best compromise in signal.
Final point. The ethernet port on on AX is active in this configuration, so if you need to connect an ethernet device, just plug it in.

  • HT1731 Help installing Airport Express with Netgear N150 wireless router? I hav

    Hi,
I just purchased the newer Airport Express (new) and am having issues using it in client mode with my Netgear N150 wireless router. All I want to use it for is streaming itunes from my aluminum macbook to my home stereo system, wirelessly.
I have followed the instructions that came with the device. No luck. I have followed the instructions that describe plugging it into an ethernet cable here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731
With the apple instructions linked above it would connect fine to my existing wireless network, using airport utility, with 'excellent' connection, but when I tried to switch in itunes to my device from my computer i get the pinning wheel and an 'unknown error' occurs.
I have setup a new wireless account and password on my router as desribed at this page, but do get confused when it tells me to use the hex key and $. Haven't worked that out yet. Any advice would be appreciated if this would help.
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20041017233832771
At best, after hard resetting the device several times, and following the instructions above at macworld, it now finds the device but only plays one blip second of a song, flashing amber from solid green, sometimes playing a second blip of a song, then pausing the song and switching to a flashing amber. By restarting my computer or opening AirPort utiliy I am able to find it again, but it either only plays one second of a song and drops again or turns green and is not able to be found at all by itunes (the button doesn't show up in the menu).
This is the second airport I have tried in 2 years. I purchased a used one and had nearly the exact same issues with a linksys router. Then it would play an album but reset if a song was paused.I had to hard reset it nearly every time i wanted to stream from itunes to my stereo. I assumed it was broken and sent it back. Figured I 'd give it a new go around with a new unit since i just moved into a new house and am now shocked at how difficult it is to set up. I have never had this many issues with an apple device.
    My questions:
    1) How can I set this up with my existing router? What am I doing wrong?! Why is it so difficult?
    2) If not possible, what routers are compatible? I would gladly get a new router in order to stream music to my stereo from ITunes.
thank you for any assistance. i am pulling my hair out.

Try temporarily disabling the Windows 7 firewall, and then, try accessing the AirPort with the AirPort Utility again.
