OS 10.6 STARTUP FOLDER

Which folder holds the applications that are to run at startup time?  I have something that has really slowed startup on my older Mac Pro.  Also, and maybe related,  is that I noticed a fleeting appearance of an app on the dock as startup finishes that says "MFSButton Monitor", then it is gone.  Could I have keyboard stroke monitor virus in my system.
Thanks for any help,
Ken

Open Accounts preferences, click on Login Items. Remove items by selecting then clicking on the Delete [-] button. See the following for various locations for uninstalling items. I believe the button monitor is part of Minolta camera software.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
AppZapper 2.0.1
AppDelete 3.2.6
Automaton 1.50
Hazel
AppCleaner 2.1.0
CleanApp
iTrash 1.8.2
Amnesia
Uninstaller 1.15.1
Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Hi, there and thanks for the suggestion. Actually, I ran a very thorough 'scan and fix' with my Glary's Utilities and afterwards Firefox now opens properly. I'm not sure what the exact problem was but am just glad it is fixed.

  • How do I add firefox to windows startup folder

Want to add firefox to the windows startup folder so that it starts automatically when I log on

More of a Windows issue, but it does directly relate to use of Firefox.

Click the Start button Picture of the Start button , click All Programs, right-click the Startup folder, and then click Open. <br /> 2. • Put shortcut to app in startup folder as part of installation.

I want to put a shortcut to my LV executable into the All Users Startup folder so that anytime a user logs in, the application will start up. I know this can be done manually very easily, but I would like this to happen automatically as part of the installation. I tried creating the shortcut and adding it as a support file, but this has the problem that once you select the shortcut to add, you get the target added to your list instead of the shortcut. I worked around this by putting the shortcut inside a folder and adding the folder contents. When I installed the app, the shortcut was placed in the right location but was corrupted.
The logical use for choosing the Destination Setting to be "Startup Di
rectory" is for this very purpose. It seems like it should be straightforward...
It also noticed that you cannot play the game of renaming the file with a different extension such as TXT - Windows still knows it is a shortcut. Any ideas?

    Chris,
I don't know how to create the shortcut, but you can just place a key in the registry to get your executable to run automatically at startup.
You need to create a key with the path to the executable in:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion >> Run
Now to do this automatically in your VI will require more programming. You can create an executable that writes that key and set it to run after the installation or you can set an entrie in your INI file that checks if this is the first time the exe runs; if it is just write the Key and clear the flag in the ini file.
I think you could also use Microsoft's Orca utility to edit the msi file and get it to insert that Key for you (orca comes now with
    the windows SDK package).
    I hope this helps.

  • Where do i find the startup folder?

where do i find my startup folder?  Attempts to locate using finder are unsuccessful.

I think you're looking for something found in Windows. If you want something to run at startup, go to System Preferences / Users & Groups. Choose your login name, then login items. Click the + to add one, or choose the item and - to delete it.

  • How to fix Security settings for Startup folder on startup

    Hello.
i am getting the message that the security settings have changed. and due that items in my start up folder has been disabled. ( now that has not stopped me from working but it is annoying in the beginning) Now when I hit the question mark it tells you about it and the solution, it talks about have MacOsX fix it , but it does not show how On other posts it says that i would receive that option on startup but nothing there either. So How can i fix it .

i took all the folders out and restarted and the same message came up that the startupitems folder is insecure and a second message saying that folder DS_Store in the startupitems folder is disabled because of insecure settings. Now I can not see that folder in the startup items folder, any idea
Probably just as it says, DS_Store is corrupt. This stores the settings for a folder.
To see if we can find the invisible folder and remove it open Terminal in your Utilities folder and at the prompt copy and paste defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles True; killall Finder
If you can see the file now just delete it.
Then, switch back to visibles only and create a new folder called Startup Items.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles False; killall Finder
Or, simply creating a new Startup Items folder may be enough.

  • Bridge CS5 - Startup folder ?

I want my Bridge CS5 to startup in the same folder each time I launch Bridge. But where in the settings can this be done ?
I have been looking, but just can't find it.

you could put the following script into this folder...
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Startup Scripts CS5\Adobe Bridge
    var bt = new BridgeTalk;
    bt.target = "bridge";
    if( BridgeTalk.isRunning( "bridge" ) )
    bt.body = "app.document.thumbnail =Folder('/c/folderName/folderName').fsName;";
    bt.send();
You will need to amend the folderName to suit, save the script as a .jsx file also I noticed that it likes to be the first script called so start the name with an a  IE: aStartUpFolder.jsx

I have tried multiple times to startup my macbook pro (I am not sure if I have lion or not) and it will only come to a white screen. Sometimes an icon appears that is a folder with a question mark in the middle. I have an external hard drive, but everything is not backed up.

  • Boot from diffrent startup folder without booting up

i tried to copy the mac os x system folder a boot from (pretty stupid huh) so when is obviously didnt work i tried using the system restore disc but my internal disc drives broken so i use a usb iomega disc drive i couldnt boot with that or the discs please help

    What? Your mac win't boot?
    Here's how to fix it:
    1. Boot open firmware( #option+OF)
    2. type setenv boot-device hd:\System\Library\CoreServices\BootX
    3. press return!
    4. type mac-boot
    5. reselect your startup disk using the Startup Disk program.
    Hope this works.
    Can be worth trying twice!
If it doesn't work, hold down option when the mac "dong!"s and click on the X logo. If there is no X logo... insert a Bootable CD (Mac OS X Install Disc 1 is bootable) and click the left button. And Wait. When this comes up, click on it, press return, wait while it boots, choose Installer>Startup Disk, and then click on the Hard Drve icon. Restart.

  • Insecure startup folder detected

the is the error I get and nothing else just started... how do I correct this not sure which folder it is because it doesn't tell me ... when I looked in start up there is nothing in there Help please
(Items in the Startup Items folder (“/Library/StartupItems/”) have not been started because the folder does not have the proper security settings.)

how did you install pro animator? did you use an installer? then you must use the uninstaller to uninstall it. trashing the program is not enough if it was installed with an installer.
also, select the StartupItems folder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup read off the current permissions on that folder. what are they?
and run "repair permissions" in disk utility. if the permissions on this folder are wrong now, they will be corrected.

  • Startup folder with question mark

    What do I do?

Pray that your hard drive is okay..
Usually this means your computer can't see the hard drive which usually means you just lost your...HD
    Try this:
    Resetting PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.
    Good luck
It has worked for me in the past once with the same issue.
It also didn't work for me once

  • Startup folder of Macs, Linux and Unix

Can anyone tell me the startup folders of Macs Linus or Unix?
    Thanks.

Assuming you mean how you run stuff when the machine boots...
For Mac, (OS X) you put the proper entries into /Library/StartupItems
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mac+os+x+startup+/Library/StartupItemsOn linux, it's /etc/rc.local or stuff in /etc/rc.d or something. You should find info if you google.

  • Bless startup folder

I used a the method from
    http://www.bradbergeron.com/20061129/howto-install-and-boot-os-x-on-a-flash-driv e/
in order to install a slimed down version of leopard to my flash drive. However, his method of "blessing" the CoreServices folder does not work (therefor the drive is not seen as bootable). Does anyone know how to "bless" it?

If you are trying to create a bootable version just for your MacBook Pro, you'll want to make sure that Disk Utility formats the Flash drive for GUID partitioning. Otherwise it may not be able to install a MacBook Pro installable version. Remember the version you are going to install on there has to either be the version of Mac OS X that came with the MacBook Pro, or a newer version of Mac OS X purchased retail.

  • Large Temp File in hd:/private/var/.../Cleanup at Startup/ folder, bloating my backup

Everytime Retrospect runs my backup, this large file is there taking up space.  Over time, a months worth of these would be 4GB in size.  How can I stop these temp files?  What are they from?
    Thank you,

Your welcome delbcj, sounds like a plan..
As an aside, I use CarbonCopyCloner for scripted incremental backups, and I found it speeded things up considerably if I excluded all cache folders on my system including Bridge's massive cache files and Safari's large cache.
In my case, both of those are modified every day and represent over 5Gs..
I use Cocktail's Finder mod of "show invisible files" to see- as Chris says-  the normally invisible Photoshop scratch file.
