OS 10.8.5 Wi-Fi doesn't find "Preferred Network"

We installed a new modem provided by Comcast that has built in wireless. After naming and establishing the password for the network, I successfully connected via my MacBook Pro, which detected it. Once connected I accessed the "Advanced Settings" screen in the Network control panel.
Under the first "Wi-Fi" tab I dragged the new network to the top of the list of "Preferred Networks." I also confirmed that the "Remember networks this computer has joined" check-box was selected.
Yet each time the computer wakes from sleep or is restarted the Wi-Fi utility scans for networks and doesn't connect to any. When I click on the control bar icon for Wi-Fi the network appears -- usually at the bottom of the list -- and when I click on it the computer connects immediately.
Obviously this defeats the point of remembering preferred networks and is a nagging time-suck at the start of each work session. Has anyone else experienced this problem and discovered a solution?
Thanks!!

  • Clean install on MBA and wireless doesn't find any network..

    Hi,
Helping a friend fix her MBA.
System would not get to the desktop at start up. spinning wheel.
From a bootable flash, Lion drive, repartition the HD and installed.  No errors, no problems.
Made sure the bootable drive was done correctly and redid it.
after a few tries of find a network, including mine. and no luck.  deleted WiFI connection from the network settings and re-added it and nothing.
Made a bootable flash Snow Leopard drive to downgrade.  Again deleted/recreated the partition first and than installed and this time the system wont start from the flash drive. I recreated the bootable flash 3 times and nothing.
Am I missing something ?  why does it start installation from a Lion flash drive and ot a Snow Leopard flash drive ?  and to add to it.. I used the same flash drive.. only had one at the moment and could fit both SL and L at one time.. so I had to recreat it them a few times... LOL. annoying.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks.

Yeah I think the printer's radio has died.  It is not user-serviceable and I have no idea how you would get parts.
To verify the radio status, on the front of the printer go to Setup > Network > WIreless Network Test Report.  This report will self-test the radio.
While maybe not ideal, another option is to plug the printer into your router using an Ethernet cable.  It will function the same as it did on wireless and even wirelessly-connected computers will be able to print to and scan from it.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • "By default, join" drop-down doesn't have "Preferred Networks" option

I use my laptop on two different networks. I would like it to automatically join whichever one is available. The Mac Help has instructions titled "Choosing preferred AirPort networks" with three steps. Step 1 works fine; I can open network preferences and get to the drop-down labelled "By default, join". It says I should then select the option "Preferred networks" from the drop-down. The problem I have is, there is no such option. The drop-down has only one option, labelled "A specific network".
It works identically on a regular user account and an adminstrator account. I have authenticated.
    Tiger 10.4.8, fully updated.

Can't find the TIL again... might have it bookmarked at work though, but that's the problem... Sorry can't remember the fix right now at all.

  • Wifi doesn't find a network. Error 1114 a DLL init routine failed

    My wifi no longer works.
Looks like I have a DLL problem.
When I try to start WLAN AutoConfig Service I get:
Windows could not start the LAN AutoConfig service on Local Computer
Error 2224: A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.
Is there a way to fix this without losing my applications by doing a factory restore?
I've now booted using the Lenova Care button to get to the Rescue and Recovery 4 screen (ThinkVantage Technologies).
Can I use ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows Vista Notebooks to fix the problem.
If so can anyone who has done this advise on their experience please?

I have this problem on a new Pavillion DM4 laptop - it's incredibly irritating. It does not happen on a similarly configured (Win 7) desktop I have. Any idea how to fix it - presumably the HP install is missing a DLL or putting it in the wrong directory (for BOINC)?It's not lised on the Berkely BOINC website so presumably unique to the HP install.Thanks.

  • When I try to extend network, doesn't find my network

Hi, My Airport Extreme is connected to my modem via ethernet. When I use the Airport utility and try to extend my network, it only gives me the option to extend a different network - I'm assuming a wireless one in my neighborhood - but does not give me the option to extend the network for the modem it is connected to.

Apple cannot extend non-apple wireless networks.. you create a wireless network with the same name and security settings if you want a roaming network.
Extend will result in severe network issues and apple may have finally modified the airport utility to stop you doing it which is a good thing.

  • My ipad doesn't find my printer....

How do I make my hp 3510 discoverable to my ipad? The wireless printing works from my laptop which has the same wifi settings, but the ipad cannot find the printer????

    Hi Kiwisteve77,
I understand the Ipad doesn't find the printer.
    Thank you for your reply.
I will be happy to help you with this.
Try turning the wi-fi off and on again on the Ipad.
If that doesn't work turn the Ipad off and on again.
Check to make sure it is connected to the proper network.
Power cycle the router, Ipad and the printer and try it again if you are still having issues.
I have provided a document for How to Use Apple's AirPrint Over a Wireless Network. Go to the section What if a 'No AirPrint Printers Found' message displays on my Apple device?

  • When I launch I photo it wants me to choose a library but it doesn't find one which is impossible, because i still have no storage. before i can clean up i want to back up them. how can i find my library?

When I launch I photo it wants me to choose a library but it doesn't find one which is impossible, because i still have no storage. before i can clean up i want to back up them. how can i find my library?

You may very well have damaged your library - or even your system by not having adaquate storage available
And never select all of the pitcture and move them - that will destroy your library - the iPhotolibrary is a SQLite database and must always be kept intact as a single entity -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • ICal search doesn't find anything

when I test this by creating a future event with a particular word in it, then return to today and search for that word in the little "search" box at top right, it doesn't find that word.
    Why not?

I have also had long standing problems of not being able to search for calendar events, either from within iCal or Spotlight or using mdfind.
None of the suggested solutions worked for me (removing Calendar Cache file, adding and removing folders or drives to the privacy section of Spotlight to re-index, or running mdimport ~/Library/Calendars.
One clue was that mdimport -d2 ~/Library/Calendars would not even look at the individual .ics files within any .calendar/Events directory (no output). I suspected that this was due to LaunchServices not associating these files properly with iCal. My system had previously been upgraded all the way from 10.0 through 10.6.
What finally worked for me was the following, using the Terminal, rebuilding completely the LaunchServices database:
    rm /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices*.csstore
    *defaults delete com.apple.LaunchServices*
    *sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister -kill*
*sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServi ces.framework/Support/lsregister -R -domain local -domain system -domain user*
(note the capital -R in the previous line.)
This step will take a few minutes to complete, with a message about I/O throttleing
reboot (not sure if that is necessary)
    *mdimport -d2 ~/Library/Calendars*
This last command should now show the successful indexing of all calendar events.
After this search finally worked again for me!

  • Find palette doesn't find the IPCT category  field

I have all my pictures by categories and suplemental categories. The "find" tool doesn't find anything if for example I type ARC (architecture), no matter if I select containing, containing all, starting or all metadata, all, etc... It seems that it doesn't search in some IPCT fields, at least in the category and suplemental category.

You are right. "find" will find IPTC entries in caption, say, but not in category. I guess it's like EXIF, where it's only make, model, serial number, artist, and software.

  • The "Search" function box doesn't find things that are there! Why?!

The "Search" function box doesn't find things that are there! Why? Eg: It doesnt show all my Sent and Received emails, but it will find an email that I half wrote and deleted. Unsure why or how to explain more fully.
I also don't understand if I type in "James email" or "J" into the search box and all the J / James stuff appears but it doesn't show the emails I know have been sent and I know are somewhere because I rang "James" up to check, but the search box shows random thing I am NOT looking for, even if I type in fully what I am looking for and test it by typing in full titles of things.
It also doesn't store all my sent emails in "Sent" box. Confused! I'm not sure if the "Search" box just isn't up to the job or if it is broken / i'm doing something wrong? Maybe the email address I use isn't set up properly?

This can happen sometimes if the cache is not cleared correctly when items are not deleted from your device.
The only solution to this is to do a restore to clean out the cache file.

  • Satellite L855D doesn't find my CD/DVD drive

    Hello!
I don't know what has happened to my computer but it doesn't find CD/DVD drive anymore.
I guess I may have deleted some necessary drive but not on purpose anyway.
Is there any way to recover it?
I have tried RmvFltrs which I found from some Toshiba's tech support site via Google search but it didn't help.
It stated that it worked but my computer tells me the installation couldn't be done.
I'm not in a desperate need of the drive to work, I'm just wondering whether it is possible to make it work somehow. So if someone could help me with this I'd be more than glad.
    Sincerely,
    Joonas

I mean that it isn't shown in "My Computer" anymore or if I try to install something from a CD it doesn't work since the drive doesn't work.
I can find it from device manager yes but it gives me this "code 52" and says the digital signature cannot be verified. There's this yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it too. Does this help at all?

  • TS3276 The Finder doesn't find ~/Library/Mail, or even "library". I need to do some experimenting to get my mail back and want to back up but can't even find a file with my messages in it.

Trying to save my email prior to a wave of experimentation to get email working again but finder doesn't find "library". Has the library been omitted from Mountain Lion?

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
After that you can drag it to your sidebar for easy access.

  • Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command   S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.

Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.
Problem started when I used Tech Tool Pro 6 to "de-fragment volume". Had to cancel that process before it finished because I ran out of time. Thereafter, when I startup my machine normally, I get the gray Apple logo at first, but it changes to a prohibited symbol (circle with a slash thru it) and hangs.
When I startup holding the Option key, I can see my internal drive, but I get the same results as above.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD, it does not find my internal drive as possible destination.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD and then run Disk Utility, it finds my drive, allows me to "repair" and says everything is fine.
When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping error message "errno = 19" and cannot stop it to do anything else.
When I startup from Disk Warrior v4.4, it does not find my internal drive to do any repairs.
When I startup from Tech Tool Pro 6 and run the "computer check" diagnostics, everything passes but the Volume Structure, which fails at "Volume Extents (B-tree)." When I use TTP's "Tools" option to run "volume repair" it will show my internal drive and allow me to click the GO button, but nothing happens and nothing changes.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive, but for as long as the internal drive doesn't mount, I can't use the backup to restore.

It's a false report and should be ignored.
I would not rely on TT as I've already said earlier even before Grant posted similar advice.
I really think the Rigid Disk Block may be corrupted. This holds the partition map and could prevent a volume from being unmounted. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix that without repartitioning the drive which will remove everything. So, before going down this road I hope you have backups or can make a backup.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.
    5. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
