OS 10.9.2 issues on late 2011 13" MacBook Air

Since upgrading to OS 10.9.2, I have lost the ability to print wirelessly with a Hewlett Packard Photosmart e5520 printer. My iOS devices can print wirelessly but I have to use a USB cable if I want to print from my laptop.
Today, by accident, I discovered that I can not use my 3rd Generation Apple TV (6.1.1) to "mirror" my MacBook Air display and in System Preferences, Built-in Display, the AirPlay Display is "greyed out" stating "No Devices Detected." The Apple TV works perfectly with my iOS devices.
What happened with 10.9.2 ? It seems that my 13" MacBook Air (purchased from Apple in late November 2011) has lost its ability to spot other devices, the printer and Apple TV.
These manifestations seem to be commonplace with 10.9.2. For me the printer issue is key as I can live without mirroring onto my Sony TV.
Will this be addressed in 10.9.3 or should I just buy a laptop with Ubuntu on it and desert Apple? In the years I have been an Apple customer, the software updates have increased in both size and frequency and I believe this update, 10.9.2, reflects that it was released with bugs that could and should have been detected before it hit the customer base.
If anyone is aware of a fix being released in 10.9.3, please let me know;
Thanks

Unfortunately, according to the ToU, we are not allowed to speculate on any future releases; people who may know are under an NDA and cannot disclose anything either.

  • Open excel issue in office 2011 for macbook air

    Hi All,
I am trying to open a excel file posted in a website in my macbook air. I have office 2011 for Mac.
I get an error saying "the file you are trying to open is not a valid excel xml spreadsheet".
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. The weird thing is that three weeks ago there was no problem at all. I was able to download every excel file perfectly and now I cant. I thought it was something regarding the Office version however I updated it and the problem is still there. One of my collegues who has a PC was able to open the file from the same website and I have a macbook pro. Unfortunately, I cant post the website link here as it is confidential information. When I download it the file shows as Pallet.xls. All those files are xls and are the ones with problems. Sorry but im just new to all MAC things.

Im looking for all possibilities to close the compatibility gap because computer freezes at boot and was wondering if there was anything i could do to get this 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM to work at 1067MHz or somehow get my computer to run at 1333MHz?...

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.

I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.  This feature seems to be lost in the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Did Apple feel that once Mountain Lion came out that EVERYONE would have Apple TV?  There are no settings in System Preferences/Display like there used to be...only for AirPlay Mirroring.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

  • Looking for 16GB RAM That is Compatible with Late-2011 17" Macbook Pro

    Hi guys,
I am looking to upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive in my late-2011 17" Macbook Pro. I've already found the hard drive I want to use, but I don't know as much about RAM, and I'm not sure which 16GB (2 x 8GB) kit would be both compatible and give me the best bang for my buck. I am in Canada so any suggestions linking to Canada Computers or NewEgg would be the best! I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    First, goto OWC - https://www.macsales.com/
It has a guide for all things Mac & Memory
Second, get an SSD as it will speed up your computer tremendously.
OWC or Crucial are very good Mac-friendly brands.

  • Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?

Hi. My question is pretty much as the heading says :
Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?
As far as I can tell from googling and searching around, it does appear that it is safe to do so.
    Specifically this page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346
But I just wanted to double-check for confirmation that it is indeed safe to use the adapter from such an old mbook pro in a newer one.
    The wattage is the same.
I wish to do so as I prefer the T-connector, and my older adapter has a much longer extension cord on it.
If not I may order another one from ebay.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
    Thanks for your help.

    Yes.
I recommend you buy one directly from Apple. There are many counterfeit power adapters on the market that could damage your MacBook Pro or potentially cause a fire.

Nearly all of them are, even if the seller insists it is "genuine OEM". Legitimate adapters from eBay are likely to be used, not new. There is nothing wrong with used, as long as you know what you're getting.
Identifying a counterfeit is possible only through close examination.

  • Late 2011 17" Macbook Pro upgrade advice needed

Hey everybody, I would like to u[grade my Late 2011 17" Macbook Pro.
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    750GB HDD
    OSX 10.7.4
So after reading on Crucial.com that I could house 16gb ram, despite what apple said, I investigated this and according to people this is tr
So my next question is, will i be able to fit a 512GB SSD from Crucial into my MBP? THe only reason I feel it's a valid question is I had the option of 1 and 2Tb Hdds WITH a 256GB SSD.
    Thanks for reading everybody

The only way that you can use both a SSD in your drive bay and another hard drive is to install the hard drive in your optical bay. If you're willing to give up your optical drive, OWC sells kits to do just that.
Then you could use your external drives for data storage & backups.
    Is this a workable option?

  • Fans continuously run loud on late 2011 13" MacBook Pro

    Hey All,
I hav a late 2011 13" MacBook Pro and about a week ago the fans began to run loudly and constantly no matter what I'm doing-whether checking email or running a dozen layers in a Photoshop project. Anyone have any clues? Running Lion, 4 GB RAM--bought an 8 GB kit but not yet installed, would that help? is there a firmware update or something?
    Thanks for any assist.

i'm having the same problem too, with my early 2011 mbp 13".  recently downloaded iStat pro, and found out that my fans are usually running about 6000rpm, and my CPU temp is above 90.  i'm using preview, word/excel and listening to music.
not to beat a dead horse (again) but none of this happened when i was on snow leopard.  i upgraded straight from SL to ML, and a host of problems ensued (mostly battery health/life).  is it something that can be tracked again to a faulty piece of hardware in the system that was highlighted after the OS upgrade?

The default setting for the function keys is that they do OS X functions.
To get a regular function hold the fn key and then press the function key.
This action can be reversed in keyboard preferences.

While they certainly don't make it clear, if you actually select the link on CNET, it's only an update file (Office2011-1434UpdateEN.dmg) which is listed on Microsoft's site:

  • 2011 i5 MacBook Air unable to sleep with lid open after upgrading to 10.7.1

    Hi,
After upgrading to 10.7.1 I noticed my 2011 i5 MacBook Air being unresponsive to wake events.  Per instructions I saw from other posts I pointed the Startup Disk to my main partition.  Shortly after (though I'm sure unrelated to Startup Disk) the Energy Saver preferences I noticed were no longer being adhered to.  I can make my machine sleep through
    1.  Apple -> Sleep optoin
    2.  Closing the lid
However, when the lid is up the Energy Saver options are not being adhered to.  I have tried
    1)  Resetting PRAM
    2)  Resetting SMC
    3)  Removing SystemConfiguration folder
    4)  Turning off auto update on all apps running
    5)  Poring through system logs
Interestingly enough, I looked through all system logs via Console and noticed during the time period in which sleep should be triggered NO EVENTS were being written to the system logs.
Currently I am using the PleaseSleep app to get my computer to sleep properly.  Please advise!
    - Frank
P.S.  I did do one thing was put a refridgerator magnet to the computer to "simulate" sleep but I doubt it would cause this broken behavior.

    Uninstall Growl. See:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Can i add storage later on a MacBook Air, and is 128 GB enough storage?

Can i add storage later on a MacBook Air, and is 128 GB enough storage?

Neither the storage nor the RAM on a Macbook Air is designed to be upgradeable - you need to be certain what you want when you buy it. Given that, if you have any doubts at all as to 128GB being enough you should go for 256GB. It depends on what you are going to be doing. If you are going to clutter it up with lots of movies they will eat space very fast; and music will eat space fairly fast.
For what it's worth my iMac with notionally 500GB of storage (actually 463GB) uses 210 GB with a lot of documents and a fair amount of music and other audio recordings (but no movies). The basic System and applications will use a moderate amount; and remember that you shouldn't ever fill the storage right up as this will seriously affect the performance (at least 10% of the storage needs to be left free for system use - swap files and so on).

  • 15 Macbook pro late 2011 - Mountain Lion - Air Play

I have upgraded to mountain lion on my macbook pro 15 late 2011 that i purchased on November of 2011.  i get this error message when I attempt to utilize airplay.  An error occurred (-6722) while connecting to the AirPlay device “Apple TV”.  Any idea why this is happening?

wow..  I think I have solved my own issue....   I was using my apple tv, watching a movie, when I tried the airplay button on the top menu bar of my mac book; however, when i'm not watching a movie the airplay works just fine.
I was worried because in the ratings of the mountian lion app everyone is up in arms about airplay and mountian lion.   maybe my computer is within the range that allows it to work correctly.
i'll leave this post here just in case someone else happens accross that error message.
