OS 10.9.3 and Radeon HD 5770

My Mac Pro (mid 2010) has developed display problems since I updated to 10.9.3 --- I use 2 NEC 2690WUVi displays.  Also, Tech Tools 7 will not run since the OS update.
Anyone else have display problems with a Mac Pro after the update

What kind of display problems?

Double check your adapters. 10.9.3 may require additional hardware support.

  • Questions about my MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 and my Dell Studio 7100

Ok, I have had this card installed for about a year now. From the beginning Catalyst Control Center had given me error messages, "Catalyst Control Centre: Host application has stopped working. Windows is checking for solutions" every time I start the machine or every time I try to use the Catalyst Control Center. This has not been a problem because I have been using a 2 monitor system using the DVI port from on and the HDMI to Display Port adapter to the second larger monitor (if I went straight HDMI I can't change the settings and I end up with a 1 inch black border around the desktop and the outer edge of the 23" monitor,) so I just worked around with the HDMI to DVI. Well now I am trying to hook up three monitors. One to the Display port through a Displayport to DVI, one to the HDMI through the HDMI to DVI and one to the Display port. No matter what I try to do through the Windows display control panel, I can not get the displayport monitor (which ever is hook to that port) to display. Windows 7 does detect all three monitors, but it will not allow me to "extend the desktop" to the third monitor and I still can't get the Catalyst Control Center to work.
I have uninstalled all files from ATI or AMD that involve the video and reinstalled the latest drivers and software, but the Catalyst Control center still is not running.
If you could help me with this it would be great. I am a graphics designer and web designer/developer and not a hardware or software tech and I have been googling and trying different possible answers since yesterday morning.
    My graphics card is
MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770
    My computer is
Dell Studio XPS 7100, AMD Athlon IIX4 630 Processor 2.80 GHz
    8 gb
    64-bit operating system
I am attempting to hook up a LG W2361 to the HDMI through HDMI to DVI adapter (presently working) at 1920 x 1080
an LG W1952 (at 1440 x 900) through the DVI port to DVI (presently working) and
an old Samsung SyncMaster 170t  to the Displayport through a the adapter (not working) monitor is detected but it will not allow the extend desktop to be applied.
Hope someone can help, thanks in advance for just reading all of this.

Just incase anyone runs into a similar problem. I figured it out.
Somehow in one of either the ATI driver updates or in a Microsoft update, my drivers and software was contaminated. I deleted all software and drivers for the card, which I had already tried several times. But this time I went into safe mode used CCcleaner in safe mode and cleared the register of all entries. I then reloaded and the Catalyst Control center and it works fine now.
The problem with the three monitors seems to be that the one hooked to the displayport, if you are using more than 2 monitors, must be hooked to an active displayport adapter. I was using a passive adapter. So either I need to buy a very expensive adapter or.....maybe a new monitor that uses displayport.
Hopefully this will help someone else having this issue.

  • Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, Photoshop CC won't read the card drivers and says I need to reinstall them and disabled 3D funtions as a result. Anyone else with this issue?

Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, I upgraded to Adobe CC and Photoshop CC disabled some filters and 3D functionality. The preference panel for Performance/Graphics Card in Photoshop CC is greyed out and inaccessible and shows this message -
"Photoshop detected an error in your display driver. Update or reinstall the driver and check Use Graphics Processor to retry."
I still have Photoshop CS6 installed and it still works perfectly. Anyone else with this issue? Is there a driver update for this compatable with my setup?

  • Three Monitors with Mac Pro 1,1 and Radeon 5770

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 3.0GHz with an ATi Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I'm trying to run three Samsung Syncmasters at 1680x1050, one through DVI, the other two through the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter. I can currently get two at full resolution, with the third coming up as a Generic monitor at 600x400.
Any ideas how I can get all at full resolution? Any help is appreciated!

The commodity in short supply is the power to run the ACTIVE POWEED adapters. These contain driver circuits that create DVI from the supplied Mini DisplayPort signals.
You must be certain that the extra USB cords are plugged in at the Mac end to get enough power to run the circuitry. If not, one of the displays will remain dark.
At Startup, the display tells the Mac its name and capabilities over a reverse-channel in the interface. That is how the Mac knows what the display_name is and what resolutions are appropriate. Failure in the display, the cabling, or the converter could leave the Mac unable to determine that information.
Debugging should be done in a two-display setup to assure that power is not the issue. Substitute computer ports, converters, cables and displays to determine which component carries the fault with it.

  • Mac Pro 2008 and ATI Radeon HD 5770

According to many other threads in this forum the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card is said to work fine with the Mac Pro 2008 (model no. 3,1) though the Apple Store lists the Mac Pro (Mid 2010) under system requirements. Well, before I’m going to upgrade my Mac against Apple’s will, I’m just curious to know if anyone has found out why Apple restricts the compatibility to Macs from mid 2010 on. Is there an issue that affects only a small number of machines? Or is there a software incompatibility popping up under rare circumstances? What is the reason for this? Why does Apple not grant downward compatibility?

Apple does marketing and doesn't do a bang-up job on writiing technical requirements on hardware upgrades and testing. It doesn't make sense, there is no reason for not just "works with 10.6.5 or later on ALL Mac Pro models."
something nice and clear and so avoids all the questions and discussion.
    Radeon HD 5870 versus 5770
2008 has PCIe 2.0 so no lose of bandwidth.
And I guess you ignored the numerous comment section on the product page? where people said it works.

  • Radeon HD 5770 vs. NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

    I am running a first gen. 1,1 Mac Pro 2 x GHz Dual-Core with 18 GB Ram.
I have two 30"-Cinema Display connected to two NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
Will I recognize more speed by upgrading to a single Radeon HD 5770?
I know that this upgrade would cost me an Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link-DVI-adapter, too.
I am mainly working with Apple Logic Pro.
    Regards
    Philipp

Visit Bare Feats and look for their various GPU benchmarks from when the 5770 was first released. The 5770 will perform better than the 7300, but it will not achieve its maximum capabilities in your model because your Mac Pro only has PCIe 1.0 slots.

  • How good or bad is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 for Photoshopping?

I'm on the verge of upgrading machines for the first time in half a decade. My Opteron 180 is kinda obsolete and, well, falling apart.
I was leaning towards a Dell Studio XPS 9000. More specifically, an Intel Core i7 920 /w 12GB ram.
During the holidays, these machines came with a choice of nvidia or ATI card. For whatever reason, most of the nvidia options -- the 260 in particular -- have been removed from the build customizing options. In fact, with regards to this one deal I'm looking at this week, the only choice is the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
    Here's the link : http://www2.dell.com/ca/en/home/desktops/desktop-studio-xps-9000/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-stu dio-xps-9000&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&~oid=ca~en~70702~studio-xps-9000-en-feat_3~~
Now considering what a great deal that is, and that I won't be gaming with this machine (so I don't much care about 3D performance), is there any reason why I *shouldn't* get this machine?
I keep hearing about nvidia / CUDA benefits. Are they really worth my passing up on this deal? Because other than the card being an ATI, this machine pretty much suits my Photoshopping / DAW (music) editing needs.
Am I making too much of an issue about the video card, considering we're talking about 2D performance here? One benefit I keep hearing about the 5770 over the nvidia GT260 is that the 5770 requires less power and is more silent.
    Opinions?
(PS: Before recommending I pass on this and order from X or Y or Z, please keep in mind I'm in Canada. The choices are different here, and the price you see at that link is CND.)

I am about in the same spot as you, trying to decide what machine to upgrade my woefully inadequate machine too.  I was considering a XPS 9000 however I have about talked myself into building one because I can get a much better motherboard with all sorts of eSATA3, USB3, dual-network-connection teaming and whatever else if I do that; however, it takes a bit of research to get things right and I am at the beginning of that process, so I may give up and fall back and go the Dell route after all.
If go with Dell, you can get memory for a bit cheaper than Dell will sell it to you so maxing it out at Dell may not be the most cost effective solution.  I mean it might be cheaper to go with the minimum RAM and then sell or trash it and buy your own 2GB chips.  Unfortunately Dell does not have a no-video-card option, but the HD 5770 is good card.
As far as ATI vs nVidia, ATI is the only one with DirectX 11 at the moment, which includes automatic tessellation for textures that have a displacement map.  I doubt Photoshop will care about that although new games will.
Here is the "Heaven" benchmark running on a $700 HD 5970 dual-GPU card, but the tessellation works on the newest cheaper ($150) ATI cards too.  The difference is most noticeable on the walls roof and stone pathways:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEnl8k6BcDs
Unfortunately Adobe has not given us guidance on what CS5 might need or can use as far as GPU support.

  • Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing?

Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing? I'm basing this question based on the current options when configuring a Mac Pro. Currently there are three options
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
Two ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB [Add $250.00]
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB [Add $200.00]
Between the second and third options I am wondering which will provide a better more productive experience for video editing. Such as using FCP or FCPX. I know how many monitors that are in use will affect the answer to this questions. While I'm more focused on which option will deliver a better video editing experience, lets just say for argument sakes that the Mac Pro is running a 30" cinema display and a small generic monitor. About 18". Its an older VGA monitor for web development.
I hope thats enough info to get an answer on this subject.
    Thanks

Ya in my research of this question, I came across this whole issue of Mac not being able to use CrossFire. I didn't thorugly investigate what this CrossFire issue was, but if it makes more sense with the singel 5870 rather than the 2 5770 then thats helpful to know.
If the Mac can't make the most out of two 5770 because it doesn't make use of CrossFire, it seems silly that Apple even bothers to offer it as an option. Plus its cheaper with the singel 5870 versus two 5770. Unless you really needed to run several monitors.
Thanks. This satisfies a long curiousity I have had.

Random unresponsive mouse, keyboard, and software when working in FCP.   The system would freeze and my only remedy was to shut down.   This would only happen when editing video.   I assumed my ATI Radeon 1900xt grapics card was the culrprit.
Ordered and installed the ATI Radeon HD 5770 upgrade from apple.  Trying to open FCP after the install, but FCP was blocked from opening for 3 reasons  1.  “Final Cut Pro requires that your system have 128 MB of VRAM; this system has only 0”   2.  Quartz Extream compatiblity and the minimim pixel height on my display was under under 800 (768)
I restarted the computer and reset PRAM (hold option, command, P & R keys down all together when you restart). Wait until you hear the second chime before releasing the keys.   This didn’t work.
So, I trashed preferences.  That didn’t work.
I opened up Applications, control click on FCP, “Show Package Contents”  Contents/Resources and opened "minsys.plist"  and set the minimum VRAM, Quartz Extream Capable, & Screen resolution all to “warn” instead of “block”.  This allowed FCP to begin it’s launch, BUT FCP  would then hang on the Looksuite Plugin and not open.
So, I then uninstalled LookBuilder & removed the plug in.  FCP would then open. BUT immediately after setting my timeline preferences to Apple ProRes 442 LT  FCP crashed with in seconds.
As a work around I tired creating a new user with admin privileges but to no avail.  FCP still crashes.   with this error “ Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000”
Any direction would be very much appreciated.

    > I purchased my rig with FCP and other programs already installed.  I don't have install disk's for FCP.  When I upgrade to SL, will I need to re-install FCP as well, or (assuming I have no other problems) can I upgrade the OS with out installing FCP again?<
The previous owner is going to be in trouble in the afterlife but you're going to be in big trouble when you attempt to upgrade FCP. You will be able to purchase FCPX, from what we can tell, without your serial numbers.
The general advice around here is to do a scroched earth total erase and install of everything when changing operating systems. In all my years of runing FCP on my Macs, I've never done that. I've alwyas just run the OS Update script and I have never had a problem with this method. I do, of course, make a clone of my system drive before attempting major changes.
If you do an intialization install when you get Snow Leopard, you will need FCP disks. Whoever you bought the rig from stole them from you.

  • Trying to get ATI Radeon HD 5770 working in 2006 MacPro 1,1

    Hi, all.
In the last week or so my GeForce 8800GT appears to have died. After the machine's been up for a while I get flickering, black bands, garbled pixels and colors, and eventually a crash of the UI subsystem (although the machine stays up and can be SSH'ed into after the UI goes away). The machine is also likely to hang during boot with the 8800 in place.
Swapping in an old Apple-supplied, GeForce 7300, the machine boots and runs fine.
Seeing a number of threads in which people have managed to get the Apple-supplied Radeon HD 5770 upgrade kit working in 2006 1,1 models of the Mac Pro, I ordered one.
    My system's specifics are:
    MacPro 1,1
    Boot ROM: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC: 17f10
It's running OS X 10.6.4 and the Snow Leopard graphics update is installed.
My problem is this. When I put the 5770 in, and connect its power cable (using either the power cable from the 8800 or the new cable that came with the 5770), and connect my 30-inch Cinema display to the DVI connector on the back of the 5770, the monitor never lights up.
I don't see the gray screen, or the Apple logo. Disk chattering is consistent with a clean boot, and if I whack on the keyboard I can hear the sounds from the login window. I can also remote desktop into the machine. When I do, I find that it has booted successfully and the in System Profiler under "Graphics/Displays" that there is only the message "No information found." There's no mention of the Radeon, or the Cinema display.
The fan on the card does spin, so at least it seems to be getting power.
Any suggestions? It sounds like many folks with configurations about the same as mine have had relatively little trouble getting the 5770 working on their 1,1 machine.
The fact that I never see anything but a black screen makes me wonder if there's more going on here than just software, since I'd guess that the initial gray screen and Apple logo are provided by the boot ROM using lowest common denominator VGA functionality common to all cards, and that no real systems software has loaded or run by that point.
Guesses? Suggestions? Is it likely I got a DOA 5770? Or might my Mac Pro be less up to the task than the other 1,1 machines that have succeeded? Or have I done something wrong, or forgotten to do something?
Any and all pointers are appreciated. If I can't get this 5770 to work my options may be going back to the 7300, or paying Apple $440 for a repair replacement of the 8800, which is a painful sum to fork out for a slow, several year obsolete NVIDIA card that doesn't have a sterling reputation for longevity.

Ah, interesting. Here's what I get when I boot with the old GeForce 7300 plugged in.
System Profiler shows no extensions with "ATI" in the name. I'm not sure if this is to be expected though. Does System Profiler -> Software -> Extensions display the kexts installed on the system, or only those that the kernel decided to load at boot time? If the latter, I guess I wouldn't expect to see them. If the former, then might there be some registration step I need to do to tell the system that the ATI kexts are present and able to be loaded?
As for the presence of the extensions, if I look in /System/Library/Extensions, I find the following files when I do an 'ls -lF | grep ATI'...
    ATI1300Controller.kext
    ATI1600Controller.kext
    ATI1900Controller.kext
    ATI2400Controller.kext
    ATI2600Controller.kext
    ATI3800Controller.kext
    ATI4500Controller.kext
    ATI4600Controller.kext
    ATI4800Controller.kext
    ATI5000Controller.kext
    ATIFramebuffer.kext
    ATIRadeonX1000.kext
    ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin
    ATIRadeonX1000GLDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeonX1000VADriver.bundle
    ATIRadeonX2000.kext
    ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin
    ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle
    ATIRadeonX3000.kext
    ATIRadeonX3000GA.plugin
    ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeonX3000VADriver.bundle
    ATISupport.kext
So lots of ATI-related goodies. The dates are all either Aug 2 or Aug 6, so I'm guessing they came with the Snow Leopard Graphics Update, which I think was released just after those dates.
I'm getting ready to return the card and try another, but will hold off another day or two, since it still seems plausible that there might be a software issue lurking...
    Thanks again for your help,
    Jerry

Installed a ATI Radeon HD 5770, now Final Cut Pro won't even open - says 0mb Vram?  Only dvi port work the two mini's not at all.  Bad card?  Macpro 3,1

I would guess there is a a corrupt media in the project. You could also try to copy a part of it to new project which is shorter and see what happens. 5 Hours is extremely long. Best to divide it to smaller sections.

  • Radeon HD 5770 got too noisy

    Hi All,
I've been using ATI Radeon HD5770 from Apple on my Mac Pro 1.1 and It has been working great until yesterday.
Radeon HD 5770 fan got really loud because it spin very fast. It is lound from start up and stay loud entire time.I tried Command+Option+P+R but it didn't help. Except noise, it is working fine but it is unacceptably noisy. I checked temperature sensor values and everything looks fine.
Is anyone encounter similar problem? Let me know if you have any idea to fix this issue.
    Configuration:
    Mac Pro 1.1, 8GByte Memory - 8x1GByte
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
PCIe Cards:Radeon HD 5770, Areca RAID Card
    Display:Dell U2711
    Hiro.

It sounds like the bearing on the fan may have worn out. You can try adding some light oil, but the real solution would be to replace the fan.
NB: WD-40 is all solvent, and will all eventually evaporate, leaving no oil behind.

  • Is it worth it?  ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit

Hey all. After several frustrating hours scouring the forums for information relating to graphics cards for early 2008 MP's, I thought I would just ask my question. Is it worth buying the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit from the Apple store? What I mean is, is there a new graphics card option coming soon seeing as the 5870 seems to be "Unavailable" for ages.
I have heard rumours that Apple bought up all the ATI 5870's and ATI is re-branding and it's cheaper to buy a PC compatible card and flash it but I don't want to mess around with all that (I would have a windows machine if I did). I've checked newegg and OWC and they both only have the quadra card and there is no way I'm paying that much. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT so any upgrade is good I suppose, I just always seem to buy something right before Apple releases the new version!
    Any suggestions is appreciated thanks.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
    Is the 5770 worth it?
It's not a bad price for a card that runs circles around the 8800:
    http://www.barefeats.com/wst10g6.html
Would be nicer if the 5870 was available.
It is billed as the Top Gun for Macs (currently), but the reported price makes it a dear upgrade.
As for the future, the 67xx and 68xx cards are in the pipeline, but, if as with the 57xx and 58xx, it may be almost a year before we see a Mac version....

  • ATI Radeon HD 5770  Two 30 inch cinema display

    someone help me?
i replaced  card because my old original  crad was dead . and i replaced to this HD 5770 which i thought would work after reading the review but i guess two 30 inche dispaly wont work with original resoultion ... hmmmm

You need a dual link dvi adapter for the mini-displayport.
Single link dvi adapters have a max resolution of 1920 x 1200. Dual link max resolution is 2560 x 1600.
The DVI port on the 5770 is dual link which is why you don't have a problem connecting as 30" to it.
    Examples:
Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
StarTech Mini DisplayPort to DVI Dual-Link Active Adapter – USB Powered
    Kanex C30
    These things aren't cheap!

  • Better replacement for ATI Radeon HD 5770

Hello. I have in my Mid 2010 Mac Pro the ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB. What graphics card is out there that has better graphics and also supports 3 to 4 monitors easily? My budget is in the 300 to 400 range. I've seen the EVGA GeForce GTX 680 for Mac, which is amazing, but out of my budget. I need to get three monitors running soon.

Readers here have found that if you have two Brand-X Powered adapters, aka active adapters, it also works fine. These do not always require another USB. If designed recently, they can pick up a power pin in the Mini DisplayPort interface.
AMD (makers of the 5770 and 5870) lists the qualified POWERED adapters that meet their most stringent requirements. Look down the page and you will find several qualified Active Mini DisplyPort to various others, such as HDMI.
