OS 10.9.3-CAN WE HAVE "DESKTOP" WIDGETS-NOT ON DASHBOARD?

I've had a Local WeatherBug widget for several yrs. I simply moved my cursor to the lower right corner
and it appeared giving me local weather information. I moved my cursor again and it was gone.
I loved it!! Now, after some repairs necessitating a clean system install and, thus, upgrading to
OS 10.9.3, I've been trying to get it back.......but no such luck.
It seems the only way I can get any weather widget is by putting it on my Dashboard. . . but…
I DON'T NEED OR USE THE DASHBOARD. The Dashboard, for me, is just adding another step.
The few apps I suppose I could use are duplicates. I have Apple's OS apps on my DOCK because I
use them ALL THE TIME. ex: Calendar, Calculator & Dictionary. They're right there!
I don't have to open one thing to get to another....... they're always visible.   The Dashboard only
complicates things and adds another step instead of the app just opening up.
I've been to WeatherBug and it's all very confusing. I downloaded one app that turned-out to be
for Windows only. OK >> trash!
Then I downloaded another for Macs. It put a "Bug" only on my desktop and kept saying the app.
was open-- I couldn't even trash it because "it was open". I ended up shutting down and then
restarting to close the darn thing so I was then able to >>>> trash.
Then I tried the one Apple offers for WeatherBug...but that's for the Dashboard.
No option that I know of, or could find anyway, to put it anywhere else— or once there, to move
anywhere else.
IS THERE SOME WAY, AFTER A WIDGET IS DOWNLOADED TO THE DASHBOARD, WHERE IT CAN BE
MOVED OUT OF THE DASHBOARD AND ONTO THE DESKTOP?
If so, would someone please tell me -- step by step-- how to do this. On the Dashboard, it's worthless
to me. I might as well just click on my favorites bookmark bar for the TV stations weather report.
We all use our Apple products differently. I only have my Mac because that's all I need. I suppose
many of these new applications are for syncing with other Apple products and for people who do many
more things on their products than I do. But...... WHERE ARE THE OPTIONS TO KEEP IT SIMPLE??
Having to open one app to get to another one is NOT SIMPLE!! It's not the “Apple way” but then many
new things aren't the “Apple way” = intuitive, simple-- easy.

From your description, I think you simply have been using Dashboard all along. Open System Preferences -> Mission Control and click on 'Hot Corners'. Click on the lower right menu and select Dashboard.
If Dashboard doesn't show up as a transparent layer for you, also in Mission Control preferences deselect the option 'Show Dashboard as a Space',

I used to be able to open separate windows with Firefox, and the content could be completely different in each window. No matter what I did in any window, no OTHER window open at the time, nor any of the content therein, was affected. This is no longer the case and it is extremely frustrating for me.
I do ''not ''like tabs and do not use them. I prefer multiple windows plus I am so used to using them, for so many years now! But with v9.0.1 I suddenly can no longer do what I've always done with my browser without this aggravating problem constantly reminding me that I can't have what I want in firefox anymore.
Or can I? Does anyone have a solution I don't realize exists?

AppleScriptObjC can use pretty much everything in the Cocoa API, so yes, it is possible.
Note that a view is not the same as a window, and a window can have multiple views. There are also many ways to implement "tabs"; take a look at some of Apple's applications - they use various mixtures of toolbars, checkboxes, and radio buttons, for example. An application such as this will be a lot more involved than what you have done so far though, using custom classes and subclassing existing ones, so be prepared to do a lot of reading and researching.

How can I have my iPad not be linked to my daughter's iPod touch?

My daughter has had her iPod for over a year,I just bought an ipad2 and now I realize that they want to act as one as far as content because they are both linked to my apple id. I set her iPod up on my desktop user account thus my iTunes library,except for once I synched it on her user account and now there are a few shows stuck there. My point is that I want her iPod to function on its own,right now it's like I have 2 devices. I am not sure which route to take as I don't want her to lose access to all the shows and music she has bought. Should I just erase/reset her iPod and set it up as if it were new and only synch it to her library and then allow her to share the content of my library. Her apple id has not made a app store or iTunes store purchase nor have I synced the ipad2 to the desktop. I would like to be able to FaceTime to her iPod but don't know how since it is all the same id

How can previously downloaded widgets be removed from the system?
In OS X 10.10.1, clicking the dashboard icon causes active widgets to be displayed. Also displayed are two circles in the bottom left of the screen. One circle contains a plus sign. The other circle contains a minus sign.
Clicking the circle with the plus sign causes the icons of all widgets, including widgets downloaded but not active, to be displayed.
Clicking the circle with the plus sign also causes it to go dim
Clicking the circle with the minus sign causes the icons of all widgets to tremble. Pressing the alt/option key also causes the icons of all widgets to tremble.
Some of the trembling icons display an X in a circle.
Clicking on a trembling icon’s circle with the X has no effect.
What is the meaning and purpose of the circles with the X’s?

Clicking the X-es on the trembling widgets are supposed to remove the widget from the Dashboard. Since this doesn't happen there might be something wrong.
Please see if the following helps:
Open the Finder and find the "go" menu in the top left corner of your computer display (not the Finder window itself) Click: "go > go to folder"
In the field that appears, type, or copy-paste: ~/library/widgets and click [go]
Trash any unwanted widgets you find in this folder.

Upgraded to MAC OS 10.8.3 and now can't change desktop photo (not responding).

I installed the update, rebooted and now can't change my desktop in System Preferrences (spinning wheel of death/ not responding when I try to search for pictures). Anybody else have this issue?

Try deleting the Desktop settings file. First, open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart, so you should be able to change the desktop

Can photos have date, but not time?

Though I've got a digital camera, in many ways I still prefer the "real" camera - however, I've now taken to getting all the films I have developed scanned & would like to merge them into relevant events.
I can generally work out the date that something happened; but less sure about the time! I'm taking it, though, that it has to have the time in there somewhere?

No - just use the data and a standard arbitrary time for unknown time - like midnight for example - or midnight for night photos and noon for daylight photos

Can we have Timesheet widget?

Hi All,
I am from Portal. I have worked on ESS business package. Timesheet, used to book time, forms a main part of ESS package. It is an IAC (Internet Application Component) hosted on ITS (Internet Transaction Server). In Portal created iview for this transaction and show timesheet.
I was just wondering if we can make Timesheet available using widgets. I know we can have RFC call for widget but Timesheet doesnt have any RFC communication. It's an IAC.
Can anybody explain if Timesheet can be done as a widget?

How can I have this widget effect in Eclipse platform?

Well, my project now demands such a widget in user interface with the requirements as follows:
This widget can display both text, icon, and even button. If the text on it is too long to display completely, omission marks should replace the redundant words. It is also selectable which is similar to a cell in the JTable, but it should support displaying icons as I said, and should only be scaled in size horizontally but never vertically.
Fortunately, I find that a component in the dialog shown during build or update process meets my request. Does anybody who is familiar with SWT know

Widgets. You'll need to probably create a subclass of JPanel, which will have a JLabel for the icons, and a JButton.
You'll probably need to call setPreferredSize(..) on the button to obtain the text trailing effect when the text overflows the boundaries.
Also, you could add a mouseListener to the panel to create the selection effect when it is clicked, or when any of its sub components are clicked. (recursion methods help to achieve this).
Scaling in size, now that is tricky. To do this, you'll probably have to calculate the width of the panel manually, by summing up the heights of the components and maintaining a fixed width. No an easy task though.
This is a nice component, so get writing. Here is a little help with the recursion

Can I have a paragraph (not a frame) upside down?

Is it possible to create a paragraph style that makes the text go upside-down? I don't mean a text frame that goes upside-down or mirrored, but just aparagraph in running upside-up text.

@Gerben – rotating individual characters by, say 180°, is possible by scripting. But I would not recommend it, because the result is horrible. InDesign is not able to do a decent kerning at all!
An example:
Suppose you create a Character Style with the name of "CharStyle1" (without the quotation marks!) and use the following JavaScript (ExtendScript) snippet:

var myCharacterStyleName = "CharStyle1";
var myRotationAngle = 180;
d.characterStyles.itemByName(myCharacterStyleName).characterRotation = myRotationAngle;
You'll get a Character Style, that will rotate every single character by the defined amount (in this case 180°):

Ok. It's unfortunate, that the characters are rotated one by one and not the whole selection. We could try to correct that by scripting another property:
The Character Direction.
But the result is also horrible:
Rotating a single character should work for you. But you have somehow to fix the bad kerning.

Can't add new Widgets to Dashboard on main user account

I recently switched to a new MacBook Air and after the initial intstallation used migration assistent to move my old data to the MacBook Air. All works fine except the Dashboard. With the old useraccount (which is my main account) I can't add new widgets to the dashboard. When I download and install a new widget I can see it in the /user/library/widgets section, I can see it in the widget list in the dashboard but when I click on it or drag it up to the dashboard it closes the dashboard again.
I tried adding a new user and in works fine in that new account.
Here's what I did to try and solve it sofar:
1. Repaired permissions
2. Deleted the two .plist's in user/library/preferences
3. Deleted the Cache in user/library/cache
4. Checked the folder permissions in /user/library/widget and compared that with the newuser/library/widget
5. Downloaded the 10.6.6. combo update and reinstalled
This behaviour is with every new widget I tried to install.
I tried to find similar behaviour using google but so far no luck. Any suggestions?

You have hosed preferences in the main user account. Create a new admin user account, log into it, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

Yes. Use separate iTunes libraries(launch iTunes with the Shift(Windows) or Option(Mac OS X) key held down as needed), or different user accounts on the computer.

Can I have two identical iTunes Music Folders for my Laptop and my desktop

I have an iMac Flower Power, 20GB of HD running OSX 10.2.8 as my desktop, 2 users, with an 80GB External HD (Firewire). I also have my new MacBook. Right now all my music and pictures are in my MacBook and I have BUps of everything in my external HD. My problem is that when I'm away, my wife can't listen to our music with the iMac 'cause I have all the files (iTunes is using the Library located at my Laptop). My questions are... Can I have 2 identical iTunes Music Folders, one in the XHD and one in my MacBook? How can I do to have both Folders sycronized so when I add music being away with my Laptop, then when I get back home the "home" Folder gets updated with the new music or viceversa? I have an iPod but I want to have the ability to also change the playlists in my iPod when I'm away. I hope this is not too hard to do.

This is what I did: First, I backed up my iTunes Music Folders. Then, I disconnected my xternal HD from my iMac and connected it to my MacBook where I had my iTunes Music Folder. Then, I copied the whole iTunes Music Folder to my xternal HD. Then I ejected the xHD from my MacBook, and connected back it to my iMac and restart. When the iMac was up I sent to the trash all the content of the iTunes Folders in my iMac, there is one in the root directory /Documents/iTunes and another in /Users/Home/Music/iTunes. Be aware that you need to "clean" the iTunes Folder which includes the iTunes Music Folder. Then I went to the xHD and copied the iTunes Library file (the data file) to /Users/Home/Music/iTunes Folder in my iMac, then open iTunes. After doing that you should be able to open your iTunes program in your desktop without having your laptop conected to your network. The only thing is that, in order to keep both libraries identical, you have to update podcasts in both computers every day, and import CD's in both computers every time you add one to your library, if you want to have the same thing in both computers. There might be another way to keep them both syncronized but I'm still searching for it. Make sure after you have your iTunes running, to go to Preferences/Advance, and set up you iTunes Music Folder Location exactly where you want it. I hope this help you guys. Let me know if you need clarification in any of this.
