OS 10 Upgrade for iPod Touch

I am rather computer challenged, so my apologies in advance. I just purchased an iPod Touch. Have a PowerBook G4 using OS 10.2.8. Looks like I need to upgrade my OS. May I go straight to 10.5 or do I need to get everything in between as well? Also, how will this upgrade create issues with my other applications (such as Adobe Elements)?

Welcome To  Discussions mondok9!
Here are the iPod Touch Mac System Requirements.
"Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later
iTunes 7.4 or later"
"...how will this upgrade create issues with my other applications..."
Check the developer websites, of your Third-Party applications, for system requirements compatibility, and updates.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), 10.4.x to 10.4.11 (Pending), and 10.5.x to 10.5.1 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If your Mac meets the System Requirements. Leopard 10.5.x, can also be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Also, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
The disc should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.

If your Mac meets the System Requirements, Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
If Leopard 10.5.x is installed, use the Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

  • I upgraded my iPod Touch 4th Gen yesterday.  Now it won't play music, which is the main thing I use it for.  Over 11,000 songs [it's a 64GB model] -- will I actually have to restore the device and re-add all that music?

I upgraded my iPod Touch 4th Gen yesterday.  Now it won't play music, which is the main thing I use it for.  Over 11,000 songs [it's a 64GB model] -- will I actually have to restore the device and re-add all that music?
[Music files are still there, and I can play them on my computer directly from the iPod [just one track at a time] but not in the usual way, through headphones.]
On the Summary page of iTunes for the iPod, it shows 50-plus gigabytes of "Other" content and no music, which was not previously the case.  I assume this is related to the problem.
I can bring up individual tracks on the iPod and see cover art, but cannot play the music.

iCloud is free, iTunes match is $25 a year.
I had the same problem and when I went to Settings I had 0 songs, even though they were obviously still there since I only had 15GB free on my 64GB device.
I decided to do a complete reset/restore of my 4th gen iPod Touch, Bad move! I've been messing with it for hours, and it simply won't restore--it keeps hanging on a black screen with an Apple logo and a progress bar at about 10%, sometimes it goes completely blank and tries again, with the same result. (I've posted my question/plea for help here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19735862 )
I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.
I thought that once I started using iCloud, I didn't need to sync with iTunes anymore--guess I was wrong.

  • Upgrading to iPhone OS 3.0 for iPod touch

    Hi,
I've read some of the forums about the Wi-Fi problems on iPod touches after upgrading to OS 3.0. I haven't upgraded my iPod touch (2g) yet, but I'm planning to. What is the likelihood that my Wi-Fi will fail? How would I be able to fix the problem?

    How would that be explained?
The entire upgrading process AFTER downloading the 3.0 update took me over one hour! The 'installing and verifying step' took quite a while as did the 'backing up your touch' step. You need to have patience for things to work correctly!!!!
Even with error checking on the download it's possible to get a 'bad' downloaded file. Even with a good downloaded file, there are certainly a number of things you can do during the 'installing and verifying step' to screw things up - like disconnecting your touch or crashing a program running in the background.
My advice is to have nothing else but iTunes (and the installer) running on your computer during the updating process and DON'T panic if it seems to take a long time!!!! Don't foolishly assume the long process means your computer has 'frozen'.

  • How do I upgrade ios 4.2.1 to 5 or later for ipod touch

I'm trying to upgrade my ipod touch from ios 4.2 to 5 or later in the itune. It says ios software upgrade server could not be contacted. I'm certain the internet connection was good. Perhaps ios 4.2 is too old. Any other ways to upgrade it? Thanks.

You have to update via iTunes
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - Try on another computer/network

  • Problem Upgrading to ios 5 for ipod touch 3G (64MB)

I have been trying to upgrade my ipod touch 3G to ios 5 and have been getting strange errors through iTunes.
iTunes tells me that I have an upgrade available to 5.0.1, if I click on that, I get the message, "This device is not eligble for the requested build"
I downloaded several firmwares for my device, and I get different error messages trying to use each one:
    5.0.1 9A405   : "device not eligible"
    5.0.   9A334   : error occurred (3002)
4.2.1 8C148   : "device not eligible"  50%  - it actually does the update the other 50%
I'm completely confused with what is going on.
    My details:
    ipod touch 3G (64MB), serial: 9C003DK76K4
    OSX  10.5.8
    iTunes 10.5.3

This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.
    Above from:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694Apple only aloos you to update to the latest iOS.  You wll get errors if you try to manuall intall other than the latest iOS.

I am from Germany. I have a Question to the iPod nano 1st gen replacement program: Can I upgrade to Ipod touch 8GB? The new Ipod nano Generation is too smal for my hands

Hello! Not a problem, because you will get a Ipod Nano 1st generation as a replacement, not a new / latest generation.

  • Can't install iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch

I am trying to download the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch from http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/whatsnew.html so I can download apps for my new iPod touch. (Although it is pretty bogus that I should have to pay $10 for an upgrade on a brand new device so that I have the privilege to buy apps). I have iTunes 7.7 already installed.
When I click on the link https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLandingPage , I do not get a download, and iTunes does not open. Nothing happens if I open iTunes before trying this link either.
Instead, I get a brief page which says "One Momemt Please". Connecting to the iTunes Store. Loading... If iTunes doen't open, click the iTunes application in your Doc or Windows Task Bar" , then my browser is redirected to http://www.apple.com/itunes/affiliates/download/?itmsUrl=itmss%3A%2F%2Fphobos.ap ple.com%2FWebObjects%2FMZFinance.woa%2Fwa%2FtouchLandingPage%3Fign-mscache%3D1 which tells me to download iTunes... but I already have iTunes installed.
I installed (then uninstalled, reinstalled) the latest iTunes (7.7.0.43) and the problem persists. iTunes works fine for all other uses.
I have the problem with both Firefox (3.0) and Internet Explorer (6)
How can I download and install The iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch directly from iTunes? I cannot find it when I search for it. It is not listed in the App store.
(P.S. The web support form does not work when I tried to fill out a problem report for "Connection" issues. Although I filled in all form fields, it would not send the report, telling me I did not fill in a field.)

The upgrade now appears directly in iTunes, so I do not need to access it from the web page. I see many others are encountering problems installing the upgrade, so I'll see how it goes...
There is no answer to the initial problem that iTunes install does not configure the browsers to handle the itmss:// protocol.
I still think Apple should not charge for this for a brand new iPod purchased just this week.
