OS 8.5 Install - Press "c" while booting - ? and Mac face logo

I got this G4 given to me and I'm dying to get it working and play with it. Someone else gave me an OS 8.5 green installation CD and I'm trying to install it the way it says to. I put it in the CD drive and started it while holding the "c" key down. It comes to a grey screen with a folder icon in the middle of it which blinks from a face to a question mark. I don't know where to go from here.
Could someone please help me? I'm totally new to this.

Hi, unckybob -
No G4 can boot using OS 8.5, whether it is a retail disk or a model-specific one. The earliest OS an early G4 desktop can use is OS 8.6, but that works for only a few models.
The specs you show for your G4 state it is an M5183. That family designates either a G4 (AGP Graphics) model or a G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) model.
The G4 (AGP) models originally came with a model-specific version of OS 8.6; later in its model life the G4 (AGP) machines came with some version of OS 9, 9.0 through 9.0.4.
The G4 (GE) models originally came with OS 9.0.4.
Either of those can use a retail OS 9.1 or retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.
In general, no Mac can use an OS earlier than the one originally shipped with it; often that is also a model-specific version, meaning that a retail disk of the same version may not work.

    Hi Pandora,
You can install one single license of a Creative Cloud on upto 2 machines. CC is a platform independent product so you can use it on both Windows & Mac but make sure that you are not using it at the same time.

  • How to remove boot options while booting in mac with the options key

I've just installed windows trough bootcamp, but somethings went little bit wrong,
Everythings works fine, mac works and windows 7 works properly. But when i hold down the option key while booting i dont have the normal 3 options (Mac, Windows, Mac Restore). I now see these options (MAC, Windows, Windows, Windows efi, mac restore).
    MAC -> works fine
1e windows -> (error no operating system installed)
    2e windows -> works fine
3e Efi windows (boots into mac)
    MAc restore -> works fine
So is there an way to clean up these options?
    Thanks

You think someone will use Boot Camp Assistant?
EFI is / was always there. Sometimes it shows up (from using Disk Warrior).
Windows has its own 100MB system reserved as well that is the boot area.
I'd start with Lion Recovery, show hidden features and partitions, and check the health of all, and repair HFS volume.
Also try your Windows DVD and see if it sees a problem.

  • Blank screen when installing Windows 7 with Boot Camp - Mac Mini 2011

I'm new to the Mac scene, having barely any knowledge on the OS.
I've been trying to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp on my new Mac Mini (Latest offering from Apple).
I have an External DVD Drive which I have been using, connected via two USB's to the back of the Mac Mini itself. It's fully functioning, with the Mac recognizing the Drive. I've used it for some CD's and DVD's so far.
I have a full, licensed copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, bought from the Microsoft Store on a DVD. There's both a 64bit and 32bit DVD, of which I have tried both to install Windows 7.
I've been through the Boot Camp Assistant software, un ticking both the "Create a Windows 7 install disk" and "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" because I already have the Windows 7 install disk. I've had troubles downloading the Windows support software from Apple, as it just stops about 1/4 of the download for no apparent reason.
So once I've made the partition, I insert the Windows 7 DVD into the External Disk Drive, and it reboots. At first it looks like the Disk Drive is working, as you can hear the Disk movement and a blue light on the front of the Disk Drive... But then the screen goes blank, and the Disk stops spinning (from what I can tell). Nothing else happens from then on.
Is there any reason as to why this is happening?
    Thanks, Dominic

Yes. Booting from a USB-DVD to install Windows
The MacBook Air has extra drivers. Some people have edited the script preference plist to add their model Not all USB DVD devices may or may not work.
Burning electronic versions like an ISO or in .exe format you will see threads where that is the issue.

  • Cant archive & install OR safe mode boot and finder is screwed

I will try and put this all in one post.
    - Running a G5 dual processor. For some reason the thing has always taken overnight to repair permissions.
    - Lately it only randomly sees DVDs, depending on it's mood.
    - After installing 10.3.9 upgrade the finder is all screwed up. Takes half an hour after logging in to settle down. Web browsing and a couple of applications will work, but if you try and use the finder for anything it will give the spinning beachball forever. Even if you try and "save as" a simple text document that will happen, or if you just click on a file on the desktop to get info the beachball comes. It all seems to center around the finder.
    - This does not happen when i log in on the "guest" account I made for guests at my house. (however, if you log in as a guest and then try to go to the hard drive to save the files on the other users desktop it will give the beachball as soon as it has to start "looking" over there)
    - Tried repairing disk permissions a few times. Tried trashing the finder preferences. Nothing worked.
    - Gave up and thought it would be easier to get Tiger, and simply archive and install, but it refuses to "see" the install disk for Tiger. It just spits it out.
    - Tried starting in "safe mode" but it freezes the computer and then goes into airplane hanger mode and I have to shut down.
    - Tried booting to the Tiger disk by holding down the "C" during boot, and it just spits out the disk.
    - tried resetting pram
    - Finally in desperation I thought I would just do an archive and install from the ORIGINAL powermac G5 disk 10.3, but after it begins to install it says there was an error and after trying again a couple of times the same error comes up.
    - I CANNOT wipe the hard drive as the data is EXTREMELY valuable.
    Any help MUCH appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello all,
    Update:
I have found I have an "Invalid node structure" and when trying to repair the disk it returns "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exite (-9972)
So after reading more, and trying more, it seems I am screwed and am attempting to back everything i have up before wiping the hard drive completely and installing Tiger from the ground up.
Therefore I am changing the subject of this thread and simply asking what i need to do to preserve all my data, preferences, safari bookmarks, iCal dates, etc etc. I have to do this all manually because computer is barely stable at this point, running extremely slow taking hours at a time, and i'm sure cant use a backup program.

  • Can I have my registered CS6 software installed on both a windows and mac simultaneously?

How many computers can I have my registered CS6 software simultaneously installed on? If it is just one computer and I wish to install it on another one, I assume I need to uninstall on the original first and simply repeat the installation process?
One more question: Since the software came with two installation discs, (windows and mac), does that mean I can simultaneously use the software on a windows computer and mac computer?
    Thank you.
    -Adobe Newbie

Not sure what you are saying. You can install and activate on 2 systems, but generally standalone installs have platform-specific serials and can only be installed eitehr on Windows or Mac, not both. However, your description seems to indicate a TLP volume license, so that would be possible.

  • When pressing ALT while booting the boot menu does not appear

    Hi,
as described above I cannot get into the boot menu of my imac.
I press ALT as soon as the sound appears but nothing happens. In fact the screen stays white and OS is not booted.
I have tried that with different devices: USB-stick and CD/DVD. Same result. And I have seen the USB-stick working on my MBP.
I have absolutely no idea why this happens. I have already pluged out all network and usb devices but to no avail.
Somebody an idea how to fix this?
Being a Windows-user most of the time I have no idea how to get this done. Appreciate your suggestions.

You need to press the Option key when restarting.

  • Can one install packages (pkgadd) while booted from cd?

Our system ( Sunfire 280R Solaris 8) crashed during a reboot for a cluster installation.

Our system ( Sunfire 280R Solaris 8) crashed during a
    reboot for a cluster installation.
Currently the system will only boot from CD. Can the
pkgadd command be run with the system booted from CD?Yes, it can. You can use the -R flag to specify an alternate root device (the hard disk).
Of course repairing the boot failures may involve more than simply running pkgadd.

  • G5 pauses for 2 minutes while booting, and message appears in console

So my G5 has developed a new habit - pausing for two minutes post grey Apple logo/gear but before blue background appears. Eventually, the boot process ends with a desktop and seems to function normally. I booted onto the Leopard install CD and ran the repair disk and repair permissions utilities. I installed the TechTool Deluxe software from my Applecare package (of course my Apple Care plan expired last month) and ran all the tests and everything passes. I ran the "periodic daily weekly monthly" script in terminal.
I checked in console and found this:
    4/8/08 3:04:23 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.WD.WDDriveServices[946]) posix_spawnp("/usr/bin/WDDrvSvc", ...): No such file or directory
    4/8/08 3:04:23 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.WD.WDDriveServices[946]) Exited with exit code: 1
    4/8/08 3:04:23 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.WD.WDDriveServices) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
this sequence of 3 lines repeats every 10 seconds.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to what this is, why it's happening, how to make it stop and if it has anything to do with the lovely new 2 minute pause at boot?
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, so I unplugged the external WD hard drive, restarted, same thing.
I used OnyX to clear out caches. Restarted, the two minute delay went away. Yay! And the ole G5 seems a bit perkier. But the 3 lines cycling through console are still there.
I went into Terminal (I'm not really a novice) because I found something in console during the boot process referring to a WDNotifier.app. I mvved it into a folder (directory) called oldstartupitems and restarted. Same three things cycle through console.

  • Strange pink squares while booting and then kernel panic

    Hello everybody.
This is my boot screen. It began 2 days ago when I tried to update Mac OS to version 10.6.8 v 1.1. When I start my MBP after 2 minutes it hangs. If I try to boot again the history repeats. When I boot from SnowLeo DVD (version 10.6.3) after 3-4 minutes of waiting (spinning wheel spins) I receive kernel panic message. After it I try to boot again and everything works. I tried to repair my HDD with Disk Utility (seems like it was needed to be repaired) but problem still present. I afraid to switch off my Mac. Any suggestions what could it be?
P.S. Sorry for my bad english, I was too lazy to learn it well.

Boot sequence kernel panics before the appearance of the login screen or desktop are almost always hardware related, unless a specific driver was installed or specific hardware was connected which wasn't before.  That it is coupled with a graphics display issue that often is chip related, says it is hardware related, since the only thing that controls the graphics on the boot screen is the graphics chip itself.

  • Unusual sound while booting up mac

When I boot up my system, it makes an ususual sound just before the screen start displaying. Please tell me whether it is an issue or not, I am not able to figure it out.

If you are worried that something is not right, you can try running an Apple Hardware Test before making an appointment at the Apple Retail Store. Hold D upon startup to run this. Below is the article that will show you how to do this.

  • Late 2012 mac mini display signal drops while booting and monitor goes to sleep

I have a new Late 2012 Mac Mini.  I have had it for a week, what just started happening is that during restart, the video signal drops and my monitor goes to sleep.  I then have to toggle through the input options on the monitor and the video signal is detected again and the monitor wakes up.
Here is what I see - If i shut down and then power back up, I get the grey screen, then the apple logo, then the little status circle spins for a few cycles then stops and then the screen goes black and the monitor says signal lost and then 5 seconds later goes to sleep.
It is possible it is my monitor but, I haven't had any issues with it and i only drops the signal like that during a reboot.

Welcome to the family. Search this forum for the main thread for this problem titled: "mac mini 2012 video blinking out".
