OS 8.6 Won't Boot login, etc.

I'm pretty well versed with OS X and Unix, but troubleshooting Mac OS 9 and below leaves me confused at times.
I'm hoping someone knows what this means here.
I've received a Grape iMac G3 (probably a Rev. C) that looks like it boots up fine, and the extensions look like they load up fine at the bottom of the screen. However, as this is happening the cursor, turns into what looks like a floppy disk icon with a memory module on it.
However, upon getting to the point of logging in, starting Finder, etc, I get a frozen watch icon, and while doing CommandOptionEsc, I can Force Quit Finder, but it just crashes the OS, and I must reboot.
Help!
Brian

Open the Preferences folder in the System Folder and move the file AppleShare Prep to the desktop if it exists as well as the contents of the Servers folder inside the System Folder if there are any, and then restart your machine. If neither of these items exists or moving them to the desktop doesn't help, open the Extensions Manager control panel and create a new set. In the new set, turn off half your extensions and restart your machine; if it restarts successfully, turn on half of the remaining extensions. Repeat the process of turning on and off half of the remaining extensions until you've found out which one is causing your problem.

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

  • Ms-6183 won't boot after storm

Following a recent thunderstorm, my ms-6183 system no longer boots.  After powering on, I get the normal single beep, fans, hard drives, etc start up, but screen stays blank (no signal message).  There is no HDD activity, and it won't boot from floppy or CD.  Power light is on.  It's like the BIOS is not being activated, but that single beep confuses me.  I thought that meant that the POST was successful.  I suspect the mainboard has blown, but is it likely to be something more straightforward. I have a surge protector in place for the power, but I think it's been hit through the broadband modem, because that is dead too.  Is it likely that the mainboard has been blown via the USB connection to the modem.  I've tried taking the USB card out but still no good.

    Hi john123
If you make a signature of your hardware (In PROFILE next to where you login) it will help to see what you have when answering questions.
Yes you do it to the board.. You have to take the side off.
Find your manual and have a read, or look it up on line  For best results OR
    Remove the powerlead.
You can clear the cmos by shorting 2-3pin while the system is off. Then return to 1-2 position. You will know if you have done it correctly because the clock and date will be wrong.
The 3pins that you are looking for should be somewhere near the battery. It will be 3pins in a row, 2 of them will be covered with a rectange shaped bit of plastic. ( it will be on pin 1-2 now, so pin 3 is the one that you can see)Make a note of its position and move it to cover 2-3 pin. leave to 20 seconds then put it back as it was.
If in any doubt take a digi photo of your boards layout before you start any work on it then if all else fails you know exactly where the plugs and leads went.
If you cannot find a manual, removing the battery will also do the same job. BUT it is best to reset with the jumper.
If you do not have a anti static wrist band touch the case to remove any static from yourself before touching any parts inside your pc.
    Good luck. Hope this helps.

  • Intel Xserve won't boot from 3rd party drive in ADM

Right, I've got a Late 2006 Xserve Dual 2.66 with the normal non-RAID SAS/SATA board, which has been running fine for 2 years with a pair of non-Apple Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB drives (Bay 1 & 2), and an original 80GB ADM in Bay 3 as a spare boot disk.
Bay 1 & 2 are set up using SoftRAID and are partitioned into a boot volume (30GB) and a data volume (200GB), both RAID 1 mirrors. The boot volume is cloned nightly to Bay 3 (single volume, set up using Disk Utility). Data is backed up to a utility machine, so this is arrangement lets me handle any single drive failing.
This arrangement has worked fine for 2 years, and allows me to remotely boot off Bay 3 and run DiskWarrior or other disk maintenance software on the normal boot drive without having to drive across town with a firewire drive. I originally started with Mac OS X Server 10.4, but I'm now on Mac OS X Server 10.6.4.
Where things have come unravelled is, I need to upgrade the two 250GBs to something larger. I didn't realise that the Intel Xserve is pretty fussy with ADM sleds and the model of SATA drive they will work with. I didn't have any issues when I set up the Barracuda ES 250GB so wasn't expecting any problems this time.
I bought a pair of Seagate Constellation ES 500GB drives (well 3 actually, one to keep on the shelf as a spare).
I installed them in the sleds and inserted them in the Xserve. The green power LEDs came on but the drives weren't recognised in Disk Utility or System Profiler. I then added the jumper to set them to 1.5Gb/s and then they mounted. I went through my normal process of cloning the OS to them from a standard disk image I have of a known working OS install, ran Disk Utility to repair disk & repair permissions, Disk Warrior to check everything else (my standard paranoid procedures). Set the startup disk to the new install and rebooted. No joy, just the flashing question mark folder. Reboot with the option key, and the new volume doesn't appear in the list of available boot options.
I installed the drives in a firewire enclosure, and it booted without any problems, so it's not a corrupt install, it's something to do with the ADM sleds.
So to go back to basics, I tried initialising a single drive as a single volume and installed 10.6.4 server fresh from the DVD. Same result, no boot when in installed in ADM sled, boots fine in firewire case.
Erased drive, changed formatting to APM (rather then GPT), cloned OS, etc. Won't boot when in ADM sled, boots fine from firewire case. So that screws the theory that drives have to be GPT to boot on Intel hardware.
So I ordered a set of WD RE3 500GB drives (x 3) and repeated this whole process. Same deal, boots fine in firewire, won't boot when installed in ADM. GPT vs APM doesn't make any difference.
Try #3. Ordered desktop variants rather than server class drives. So armed with a pair of WD Caviar Black 500GB. Same deal, boot fine from firewire, will not boot when installed in ADM. Also required jumpers for 1.5GB/s and also the undocumented pins 7&8 (apparently this might be related to the new Advanced Format they are using)
    Try #4
A pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB. This is where it gets tricky. One of the Barracuda will boot the Xserve when installed in an ADM, and one will not. So 2 Barracuda 7200.12, both same model number (ST3500418AS), both same firmware (CC38), yet they behave differently.
    Try #5
    Barracuda ES.2 250GB (x 3). Won't boot in ADM, will boot firewire.
    Try #6
    WD Caviar SE16 250GB (WD2500KS)
Boots in ADM (Yay!!) and firewire
    Try #7
    WD Caviar SE16 500GB x 2 (WD5000AAKS)
    Boots in ADM and firewire
I've managed to get access to G5 Xserve (2.3DP) so I've repeated all this testing on it as well. The G5 doesn't care about the model of drive and boots from any of them using a 10.5.6 install with APM formatted drives.
I've tried all these drives in 4 different models of ADM sled. One thing I have determined is that the model of sled determines if you need to use the 1.5GB/s jumper. I have 2 sleds from G5's, they require the jumper, a 80GB Intel ADM sled with separate data and power plugs requires the jumper, and an Intel 160GB ADM sled with the ribbon cable and combined data/power plug doesn't require the 1.5GB/s jumper. APM vs GPT formatting again makes no difference.
So on the Intel machine, the drives work in the sleds, appear as normal drives on desktop or in Disk Utility when logged in, and also appear as normal drives when connected via SSH if Auto Login is disabled. So to me they appear to be working drives.
It appears to me that something changed at a low level between the Barracuda ES and ES.2 generations of drives (for WD drives as well since the Caviar SE16 that boots is a similar age to the Barracuda ES)
So then why won't it boot from them? Is there some magic dance I've missed?
And how come one of the 7200.12 will boot, while another identical model won't?
Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer for you, but you deserve thanks for all the useful hardware information you posted from your trial-and-error testing.
My impression has that the XServes need specific kinds of firmware and hardware monitors on their drives in order for everything to function smoothly. My own efforts swapping drives in ADMs has produced "mixed results" to put it mildly. It would be so much easier if we knew what kinds of drives worked properly in what kinds of ADMs and on which Macs/XServes.

  • Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown

Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?

    Hi,
Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.)  Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Brian

  • Mac won't boot properly unless in safe mode

Recently I updated my MacBook Pro to OS  X Yosemite. I then started the process of the data encryption.
I don't know what happened, but maybe the encryption failed, because now every time I turn my mac on, it won't boot properly unless it's in safe mode.
Either it will have a black screen with a visible cursor, or just the desktop with no dock or the bar along the top and no icons, or it does boot up properly, but works extremely slowly. Like if I was to press the apple symbol on the top-right of the screen, it would take 5 minutes to actually open it. Nothing works properly.
And so I opened up my system preferences, and discovered that the Encryption is stuck on half-finished. But I can't stop it. If I try to turn encryption off it says I have to wait till it's finished. But it never does, the progress bar never moves.
If I open System Preferences while in Safe Mode, the progress bar for Encryption is grey, and underneath it says "connect to power to continue encryption". But it IS connected to power.
Have I stuffed my Mac? Is there a way to get it working again?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mac Mini won't boot to Mac after partitioning for Windows 7

    system:
    Mac Mini, late 2009
    Intel
    4 gig ram
500 gig hard drive, brand new
    OSX
Mtn Lion with Mavericks just installed, runs ok
    problem:
Adding 90 gig partition for Windows 7, now won't boot to either Mac or Windows
After a little bit sticky install of Mavericks, I had the thing running fine. I downloaded support sw onto the USB drive as per Bootcamp instructions, and started going through the wizard to install Windows 7.
First try:  "error" while creating the partition. I ran the Disk Utitliy, Verify Disk, found an error, ran Repair, it fixed the error
Second try: it started making the partition again, and then apparently just zipped through the partition making real fast (it finished so fast I could hardly catch it), then shut down in an apparent restart (as it's supposed to?), and from then on it won't reboot all the way. I get about 15 seconds of gray screen, the Win 7 disk jerks a little, then screen goes blank and silence. No hd activity. Tried restarting with all the usual key combinations (Command-R, "X" key, Option key, etc, etc). Nothing will bring the Mac login screen up again.
What gives? It is such b.s. for this stuff to be so flaky. This is all totally current software on the Mac side, running fine for days, and an apparently ok partition created. Fix me, Apple.

Got it. Thanks for the help.  Isn't there any boot disk thing that I can just stick in there that will jerk the OS sideways and give me the Mac login screen, or did the Bootcamp/partition attack just wreck everything?  I don't see why I have to do an entire scrape of my totally updated and formerly working OSX just to retry a routine Bootcamp partition, which the girl at the Mac Store in Seattle here assured me has worked for them all the time.   It really is a crock. Maybe I shouldn't bother trying to put Windows 7 on there at all if all these latest versions are so flimsy. I wouldn't want to have to do it all again. But it looks like I'll have to at least once. And send Apple the bill for my wasted time. I ain't feelin' the glamour.

  • OS Mavericks won't boot without using safe mode

My macbook pro won't boot up when its not in safe mode. It gets to the apple screen and then freezes but I can move the mouse around. Safari also won't open even when it is booted in safe mode.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the suggestion of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only run the test in safe mode, proceed anyway.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important, so don't worry about it.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The script will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window.

  • Satellite m300 won't boot! please help!

    Hi,
I've got a bit of an issue here.. I have a Satellite m300.. a white one..
and it won't boot... I've had this very issue before but it turned out to be an external USB HDD that stopped it from booting up but now even with everything removed it still won't boot.
And it was fine until yesterday, it just gave up.. I am away from home for work so I have all the work stuff and unfortunately without my recovery cd, but my guess is that it won't even read it..
    So this is what happens..
    turn on..
all light come on.. including power and all the white lights around the keypad..
and then maybe 5 sedconds later caplock and numlock(?) green lights flash..
then it's a dead still.. no HDD activities or sound.. just dead quite..
the screen remains black blank through out..
it seems to get stuck here before reaching the post screen.
i thought the power button usually took more than just a push to turn off? it instantly swithces off with a single push of the power button..
I think this laptop is like on sleep or something and can't seem to wak up.. maybe?
    And it has vista.
Please help.. I have some important work files I need to recover at least before formatting..
and that has to wait till I get home which won't be for a month or so..
which also lets me take it back for warranty as well..
    any help appreciated!!!
    cheers,
    Min

Disconnect all devices from motherboard : AGP/memory/drives/floppy/USB/PCI cards etc. take out the 20pin & 4pin PSU connectors and reset the motherboards

Assemble PSU connectors ,only one DIMM module and graphics card and turn it on and se if you get a post .
Just removed all components. I reset the CMOS. I then reconnected the 20pin and 4pin, 1 stick ram, and the video card (no ide devices, no mouse, keyboard cd drives) and the monitor doesn't show up. I also tried another monitor so it isn't the monitor.
Could it have a bad AGP port?
Any other suggestions? I am thouroughly stumped. Also the power and reset buttons don't work no matter what configuaration I put the front panel connectors in. The Power LED is lit up and it doesn't work and the reset light is off and it doesn't work.
Also noticed one of my fans connected to one of the two other fan pins on the motherboard isn't working.
    What a nightmare.

  • MacPro won't boot-up...I think it's hardware related

Sorry, this is detailed, but I figured I had to explain everything I've done so far and the issues I've had. Thanks much!
My MacPro won't boot up. Initially I thought it was a software problem, and went through this thread looking for help. After a while, I came to think it wasn't the OS but a hardware problem. Here's why:
The initial problem was that I couldn't login to OS X (Lion). It started with the screen flickering, and freezing up. One time I logged in, and there were these uniform dots across my screen, and a black border overlaying the screen. I restarted, and that was when I couldn't login at all. It would go the gray screen with the dark gray Apple logo. The sundial would appear below...and then suddenly freeze. At that point, nothing.
I tried to boot into Safe Mode, but this also didn't work. The same result.
I then decided I'd do a clean install from the Install DVD and overwrite my boot drive (everything is saved onto a RAID Array). However, I couldn't load the OS installer.
I then thought maybe it was the HDD itself (the boot drive), so I bought a new one and tried to format and install. Again, the same thing. The DVD drive would activate, the gray screen would appear, and then it would freeze at the sundial. But this time, the dark gray overlay would come on screen, with the small box that told me to hold down power key (the one in mutliple languages).
So I then began to suspect the problem was deeper. I ran the Apple Hardware Diagnostic test. (I disconnected everything except the keyboard and the display.) The quick version showed everything was fine, but the extended version came back with some varying results.
    First, my specs.
    This is a MacPro 3,1.
24 GB RAM (8GB installed by vendor, 16 GB recently installed by me)
Bay 1 - Unformatted new HDD
Bay 2 - Slice 1 of RAID Array
Bay 3 - Slice 2 of RAID Array
Bay 4 - Formatted HDD for Storage
When I ran the first test, it was as above. Here is the error message I received:
    4MEM/62/40000005: 0x79600ff18
This made me think it was a memory issue. So I took out the new RAM I had recently installed and ran the test again. I got this:
    4MEM/60/40000005: 0x79650d18
So I took the old RAM out and put the new RAM back in. I also put the original, formatted HDD with OS X back into Bay 1. Here's what I got this time:
    4SNS/3/4000000: TMOP-128.000
The new kind of error led me to think the problem was the old HDD and old RAM (after all, when I used only the new RAM, I put the old boot drive back in). When I ran the test, with the unformatted HDD in Bay 1 and the new RAM, I got...no error message!
So I restarted my system, hoping I could load the Install DVD now and install Mac OS X on the new HDD in Bay 1. But...nothing. Same as the original result. Gray screen with a freeze on the sundial, and then gray overlay telling me to shut down. Aaargh!!!
Someone suggested trying to login to Single User mode. I was tried and was able to do that. But, what do I do from there?
So I rebooted, and then tried to login when holding down the option key. It came up with the option to load the Install DVD. I said yes, and of course, same result as before.
So, as a last step, I put my old HDD back in and started the system holding the option key. This disc is a dual boot drive with Windows 7 on another partition. It gave me the following options:
Mac OS X HDD (my Lion install)
    Windows 7
    Recovery HD
    Install Mac OS X (DVD)
For kicks, I chose Windows 7 to see what would happen. It actually logged me in! ... but it was like I was in an old safe mode in this sense: the screen size was the smallest available (that is, all the icons were big).
This makes me think that maybe (again, maybe) the problem is the video card. (Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT) This might explain the flickering and freezing I initially had when I could actually login. But...really, I'm at a loss and don't know if I should take the time and money to get a new video card.
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks!
    Naveen

Windows 7 DVD has a decent memtest and you are in Safe Mode probably due to Windows didn't shutdown gracefully.
You can also use chkdsk or WD Lifeguard to certify all the disk sectors are mapped out if they need be.
8800GT: you have heard of the 10 minutes in over for 350*?
But you might want a new card anyway.
Vendors and RAM. Well it was working but buying RAM esp FBDIMMs and my guess is you have some 4GB DIMMs. Also mixing sets or brands can work most of the time, but not always.
RAM probllems result in dirty files and other errrors so fix the problem, make sure you have a good pair and no errors. Or more. And then try clean install.
Windows 7 w/ AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys does not like an Apple array to be present. MacDrive gets around that and allows mounting - and avoiding BSODs.
Cheap as I have found, highest quality though, 667MHz so they run 4% slower is all, if you need one good set:
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
Lion Recovery Disk Repair? you did or didn't?
Lion installer: hopefully you kept the ESD package for later re-install (without having to download and all that bother).
Some people play musical chairs with the Risers and DIMMs and DIMM slots. Or just RMA and get new sets but I would try with just half the 24GB or less, then test with half the 16GB set. To have one set it would be one DIMM in A1 and B1.
And of course reset the SMC - hitting power button 10 seconds while unplugged (and no devices or cables connected).

  • Mac Pro crashes on boot, won't boot from install CD - help!

Hi - I've got a Mac Pro which will only boot in safe mode - it goes to grey screen before login under normal conditions, and has a kernel panic when told to boot from the install DVD. Please help!
For background: I've got a dual-core 2007 Mac Pro and a 2 core 2008 aluminium MacBook, both of which I've been backing up to their own external drives with Time Machine. I've just bought a NetGear ReadyNAS (2TB) to back them both up because I ran out of space on the Mac Pro's two internal 500GB drives - I've put in a new Samsung 1TB drive, which is the only hardware upgrade I've made to either machine. The MacBook backs up fine to the NAS over a wireless network, but the MacPro kept crashing the system while making its first attempts at backing up, both within Time Machine and when just copying the TM backup files across in Finder. It would hang about 10GB into backups of approx 1TB, as here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550 - but the NAS formatting works for the MacBook.
On advice from NetGear I put the following command into Terminal:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
Now the Mac Pro won't boot except in safe mode - it won't boot from the install disc, either the 10.4.9 that came with the machine or the 10.6 disc I bought later. if I let the boot run as normal, it locks up on the grey screen (as here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570). If I boot with the install CD (holding down 'c') I get a kernel panic (as here - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html). If I hold down 'option' I can choose between the HD or the install CD, but each option just takes me to the same places as above. Safe boot works, but that's it.
I've done all the obvious things: I've unplugged all peripherals and network cables. The extended Apple Hardware Test shows no problems. I've repaired disk permissions and done a live verify on the startup drive in Disk Utility. I've reset the PRAM as well, but the behaviour is the same: It doesn't feel like a drive failure as I've managed to back up the startup drive while in safe mode and I don't hear any clicking or worrying drive noises. I don't know how I could wipe the startup drive and reinstall the OS because I can't boot from the install CD - or from a USB drive, as suggested here - http://osxdaily.com/2009/09/02/install-snow-leopard-from-external-firewire-or-us b-hard-drive-or-how-to-upgrade-to-106-without-a-dvd-drive/
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

  • My clone external hard drive won't boot - start up?

    Hi,
I am selling my MacPro and need to clone its system drive for the new lap top I will buy soon. So I bought a new external 2TB HDD from OWC. I have found that this external HDD will not boot up, even though it says it is bootable, and appears in the Start Up prefs when I select it. It sppears on the desktop, doesn't make any weird clicking noises as well.
I am using 10.6.8 OS X. The 2TB HDD has two partitions (created with DU), one is bootable (Mac OS X extended journaled), and the other is a regular HDD space for media etc. It is GUID. It has "Ownership" checked in the info box.
I used CCC 3.4.4 and since this is 'hopefully' a one time deal, selected the 'Delete anything that doesn't exist on the source' setting. I cloned my system drive to the bootable space and had no problems with the transfer. Plenty of space to write all the files. I even made sure everything was checked in the 'source' window that a system drive might need. Everything was checked.
I spoke with a representive at the OWC Sales company and checked that this HDD can be used as a bootable drive.
I checked the connections: with external HDD with FW800, and Sata connectors. I have checked it with my Mac Book Pro as well. Same result. No boot.
I really don't understand why this drive won't boot, since everything looks correct.
Does anyone have any thoughts, suggestions, ideas for fixing this issue?
    Thanks
    M

Not sure if you managed to get this issue resolved yet Marcus, but I too have a similar problem:
Currently I'm upgrading from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) on both an iMac and MacBook Pro (both Intel), but before I proceed with the OSX upgrade I wanted to back everything up. Thus far I have partitioned an external firewire drive (G Drive - one that is bootable), and cloned each machine using Carbon Copy Cloner to it's own partition (both GUID). There is plenty of space left over on each partition.
The issue - I can boot the OS X from the external drive on the MacBook Pro but not on the iMac.
When I restart and hold down Option on the iMac the only drive that appears is the HDD, not the other two selectable drives that are visible if I boot up on the MacBook Pro. On the iMac in System Prefs > Startup Disc I can see all 3 drives but when I select it and restart, the machine freezes on the grey loading screen and goes no further.
Not that it should make a difference, but there is a 3rd partition on the external drive that is currently empty (for extra storage).
Any help is greatly appreciated - I can't find any relevant answers elsewhere. Thanks,
    Dan

  • Startup Manager displays Mac HD but won't boot to it

I have a 2008 MacPro (2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) that has been successfully running Bootcamp for a couple years with a Windows XP partition and a Mac 10.5~ partition (actually I can't remember if it was 10.6 or 10.5). We recently made a new partition for Windows 7. (This is in a classroom full of identicle MacPros, but noteably, the problem machine is the teacher's station).
As of today, the MacPro no longer boots into the Mac OS partition. It boots, by default, into Windows XP every time. Holding down option on start up brings up the Startup Manager, and the Mac HD is visible, and you can click on it or tab to select it, but then nothing happens. We tried a bootable external hard drive, but had the same problem with the Startup Manager and an inability to select anything (the keyboard and mouse both seem to work) but nothing happens when you click on your selection.
Once booted into XP, you can see the "Mac HD" option in the Boot Camp Control Panel. You can select it, but then the computer boots back into XP.
I did get the computer to start up off a Mac OS Snow Leopard install CD by holding "C" on start up.  I ran "Repair Disk" using Disk Utility and found no problems. I tried repairing the disk permissions, and although they seemed fine.
I tried zapping the PRAM but there was no effect (booted into XP).
I unplugged the computer for a few minutes to reset the "NVRAM". No effect.
I tried different key combinations to attempt to boo in Safe Mode, Single User Mode, Verbose Mode, and none of those things worked, the computer booted straight into Windows XP every time.
I tried holding "d" for a hardware test, but nothing happened. Do you need to be on the internet for this? Because, I also tried, based on some suggestions I saw online, unplugging all peripherals (like our bootable firewire drive) and ethernet cables and not using a third party mouse. No effect.
Finally, I let the Snow Leopar install CD install, and although it seemed successful this had absouletly no effect. It still boots straight into Windows XP.  Granted, I did not delete everything for a clean install, as I'm not sure the files are backed up anywhere.

""To update anyone watching this, we tried putting the hard drive in a different machine and still had the same boot issues,""
Are you saying that the questionable HD was put in another computer and THAT computer had the same issue as the Professors?
If so I would just backup and erase the hard drive, reformat and reinstall everything as something buggered up the Boot Manager and your going to take more time figuring it out as to redo everything.
I don't think the HD is going out but you MAY have some bad sectors on the Mac partition, if that's the problem then the bad sector might be in the bootable part and thats why it can't boot. If you want to save the HD have a disk utility do a Surface Scan to make sure.
As far as not being able to boot into Safe mode, etc, if it had a bad sector it won't be able to read the boot part which is why you can still boot into the Install DVD.
You know, looking back at your original post if you can't boot into safe mode while pressing the Shift Key after the bong, can't boot from an external HD or any of the other ways, then I would say it's a hardware problem.
Like I mentioned before, if you can put in another Dual boot HD from another machine into the Professors machine and it still won't boot into both OS's then you have confirmed it's a hardware problem.
    Good luck...

  • Arch won't boot, FS not detected, Kernel Panic.

Ok so here is the situation. I have arch linux installed on sda1, which is a sata drive, samsung. Seems lately I been having problems getting arch to boot because it doesn't know what type filesystem my root device has. It goes on and tells me that I can use the kernel parameter rootfstype= to solve the issue, but yet when I try this, it does nothing. I stop getting the error, about unknown FS type, but arch still won't boot. Init fails...
I have tried everything on these forums to fix the problem and not one thing in general has solved the issue. What seems to be most consistent about this problem, is it takes me at least 20 - 30 times of rebooting before it will finally go through and boot. But, even then this is not foolproof. Last night I tried at least 30+ times of rebooting, powering off and still it would not boot.
So after reading the forums some more I found an article somewhat related to my problem and it was suggested that I add my root FS type as a module and then remove the filesystem hook in mkinitcpio.conf. I tried this approach and at the same time downgraded to 2.6.24.2-1 kernel26 so mkinitcpio would generate the new image. Then I rebooted and arch loaded just fine. So then I rebooted and again, unknown fs type on root device error.
So I retraced my steps and tried the same process again, only this time when I rebooted I got same problem. So as it seems, nothing I did to mkinitcpio.conf did anything to alleviate my problem.
As of right now, I managed to get the fallback image to work(but fallback does not load all the time, just this last time I tried it it worked), but I am scared to death to turn off my machine because I know it's not gonna reboot without a lot of hassle.
So can anyone help me diagnose this problem? What can I do to get the kernel to boot and mount the root device with ext3 and pass init on boot up? I am completely lost when it comes to this...

I had a similar issue (I think, can you post the exact error the kernel panics with to check?) and it seemed grub or the kernel had difficulties with finding my root device which was specified as a device node in /dev. The solution for me was to change the root parameter in my kernel line in grub's menu.lst to root=/dev/disk/by-label/<label>, I'm sure UUID and such will work fine too. After doing that I haven't encountered a single such kernel panic. More info about persistent device naming can be found here.
