OS 8.6 won't quit or restart after hard shutdown

While testing a G3 266MHz beige mini tower running OS 8.6, the system hung and refused to shut down even when the power button was pressed and held, so I literally had to pull the plug. The operation it hung on was opening a folder containing a large number of files (several thousand) on a mounted volume from an OS 10.4.8 machine. Disk utility and DiskWarrior reported no damage after restarting the machine, however the machine now seems to have a problem: it refuses to shut down or restart from "Special" menu and still refuses to turn off from the power button. I can change the startup disk to a utility volume and run repairs from it, which I just did even though no damage reported, but when booted from the original disk problem is still there. Any ideas as to what's causing this behavior?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Seems to be working OK after several restarts from utility volume. Maybe "auto restart after power failure" in Energy saver server settings had something to do with it.

How about extensions? Perhaps you have an adblock extension installed.
Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions

  • Safari won't open without restart after installing Yosemite

After I installed Yosemite, safari won't open from sleep mode without me restarting my computer.  Should I or can I uninstall Yosemite and reinstall or is there another fix?  Thank You for any help.

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • Tiger: Won't Restart After Force Shutdown

After a force shutdown (due to a system hang or whatever), my PB 15" Aluminum won't reboot. I just get the gray screen with the revolving curly-que--forever. I have to start up on another volume (I have partioned my HD). Then I usually run Disk Utility (shows no repair necessary). After that I can restart the original volume. This occurred under previous versions of Tiger; it is not peculiar to 10.4.5. Anyone else experience this? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try things in Mac101 (no offense) and Apple doc.#106464 for your
    startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your
startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache
Corruption. His link will help walk you thru
    it.
    Cheers!

Thanks, I was unaware of these materials, but they seem to address issues that would preclude startups on a regular basis, such as persistent incompatiabilities. In my case, once I have rebooted the machine with another volume (the Tiger install disc also works), I have no problem in rebooting in the original volume thereafter again and again (at least until the next system freeze and force shoutdown). I only have the problem after a force shutdown, never at any other time. Still, I will try the things recommended in the references you gave and see if I can identify the problem.

  • Won't Sleep only Restart after 10.6.6 upgrade

Since the upgrade (via Software Update) to 10.6.6 I put my Mac Pro to sleep like normal (Apple icon, select Sleep) and the machine goes into sleep mode, screen goes off and sleep light comes on.
When I click the mouse to wake it again, the machine restarts and I have to log back in. Obviously I've the workspace I had. The sleep light is on all the time prior to my clicking the mouse button to wake it.
Any help with this would be appreciated. Until this update I never had a problem with sleep mode and used it day in, day out. Thanks.

First, use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
Then download the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

  • IMovie won't quit referencing camera after import.

After I import video from my camera and then disconnect the camera, IMovie clips won't finalize. It appears that the video has been imported into the library, and I can use the clips to create a video. However, when I disconnec the video camera, video clips that I had used from the camera are now not visible and the window displays "missing camera" with no video. At one point I was able to share the video to file and it created the video in Theater, but then when I tried to share to YouTube  I get a message that it won't share due to the video still trying to reference the camera. How do I fix this?

Several people have reported this problem.  It seems that occasionally iMovie decides to reference clips on the camera rather than copying them to the imovie library.  I don't know why this is happening but as a workaround you could try first copying your clips and photos from the camera to your hard drive, disconnecting the camera, then importing them into iMovie from the hard drive.
    Geoff.

  • Random restarts after hard drive change!!

Hi guys, I have a Late 2009 15" MacBook Pro (Unibody) A1286 that recently had a hard drive change due to the stock one coming close to failure. After a couple hours of usage, It suddenly freezes (and if i'm playing audio, it sounds like a broken record for a second) and restarts and gets the "Your computer restarted because of a problem" message. • MacBook & OS X 10.5 No Restart after Faulty Shutdown

I don't have my startup DVD with me on this trip. After freezing up, I manually shut down the MacBook by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Now, when I try to restart, all I get is a gray screen. Not even a blue screen or spinning wheel. If I hold the power button down for 10 seconds or so, the pulsing "sleep" light begins to flash, then an alarm sounds "beeeeeeeeeep", then the hard drive fires up like a jet taking off, but still a gray screen.
I have tried to start up in safe mode, but it doesn't work. I have also held down the Option key while starting up, and that shows a logo of a file with a big blinking question mark, and nothing more.
Please help! Can I solve this with out the startup DVD or do I need to find an Apple Store? Thanks

I would begin looking for an Apple Store. You will either need a 10.5 startup disk to run utilities on the internal or you may need to replace the drive.

My iMac drops settings information.  Sounds associated with receiving and sending an email disppear after about a week and return following a shutdown and a restart.  The cycle contunes.  Also, the picture of me that was taken when I bought the iMac more than a year ago and appeared at logon recently disappeared and was replaced by a soccer ball.  I took a new picture, which appeared for about a week at logon, and it has now been replace by a blank picture.

The standard procedure with these types of isues is a PRAM reset.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Xserve won't boot from RAID after a Shutdown

    Hello
I'm running a new Intel Xserve 2x2.0Ghz with Apple Raid Card an 3x250GB Apple Drives in.
Starting from 10.5 Setup DVD and setting up a Raid 5 using the Apple Raid Utilitie works fine an also the installation works great. Raid set is ok, Volume initilized, all up an green.
If I then power down the Xserve (to move in to a rack or so..) an power it up again, the raid setup is gone, no bootdevice. No raid sets nor volumes are available when checking again with the Apple Raid Utilitie from the setup dvd. Backup batterie is charged an I also replaced the raid card one time.
Has anyone an idea whats wrong with this box?
    Best regards,

  • Mac Pro Mid 2010 keeps restarting after installing OSX Mavericks

    Hello,
my Mac Pro Mid 2010 started quitting and restarting after installing the Mavericks OSX. I was thinking about wiping out the drive and reinstalling OS X Mountain Lion but thought I should see if anyone else is experiencing these issues before going that route.
It just intermittently restarts and it tries to restart multiple times before it will actually start up again. It's not issuing a crash report. It just quits out and restarts. It started doing this just at initial startup. It now will quit and restart at any given time and it will take multiple times attempting to start before it actually starts up. I've even had to shut it down because it would going through that startup sequence without starting. No perceivable pattern as to why this is occurring. No specific programs that it occurs in. The only thing I know for certain is that it started happening after installing Mavericks OSX – OSX Mountain Lion was fine. I also made sure to unistall Mountain Lion before installing Mavericks with those potential issues of trying to install one operating system over another. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hello Linc,
I followed your instructions. I have information for the BOOT_TIME and for SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS sections. I've included all within one post with heading separators between the two sections. I wasn't sure if you needed this posted as two separate posts or not. If this isn't correct, please let me know and I'll do again. Hopefully I didn't pull too much content for the BOOT_TIME section. I was trying to search for enough diverse content that would clearly represent what might be occurring. It was also challenging to choose content for the BOOT_TIME section though because there was no time-stamped content close to the time of BOOT_TIME time stamp. The last time I restarted my system was hours before I attempted your exercise. And, I haven't experienced "crashing"  more than it just automatically restarts in the middle of things. I wonder if that's why there were no .crash reports? There was only a list of .panic reports so that's what I provided. Thanks for your help Linc.

  • Hi, my mail won't open from my dock on my mac and it won't quit so I can't restart. Anyone help?

Hi, my mail won't open from my dock on my mac and it won't quit so I can't restart. Anyone help?

    Hello ward886,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like Mail is unresponsive, and you are unable to access it or restart your system.  In a situation like this, I recommend force quitting Mail and restarting your computer.
Use one of the following methods to force Mail to quit:
Using the Force Quit feature of OS X makes an application close, even when it is not responsive.
Important: Normally you should not need to force quit an app to close it. When an app is forced to quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved, so try these methods to normally close the app first:
Choose Quit from the app menu. For example, in Safari, choose Safari > Quit Safari.
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock.
If your app does not close using the steps above, use any of these steps to force the app to quit:
Switch to another app, such as the Finder, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
Hold down the Control and Option keys on your keyboard, and click the icon of the unresponsive app in the Dock. Select Force Quit from the menu that appears.
Open Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder or the Spotlight menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Activity monitor window. Choose Quit Process from the View menu, or click the Force Quit button in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window.
If you cannot switch from the unresponsive app, press Command-Option-Shift-Esc for three seconds to force it to quit. This key combination tells OS X to force quit the frontmost app.
    Find the full article here:

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

You need to press and hold the power button for five seconds and do a "hard" shutdown. Then restart.
Download the "offline installer" here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and run it to update.
