OS 9.1 or 9.2 won't start up with new powerlogix dual processor

I've recently upgraded my G4 with a powerlogix processor: AGP [email protected] GH dual with 4mbL3. All things seem to work beautifully in os 10.4.6. The trouble is, I frequently need to restart the machine in OS9 in order to use my scanner, and the machine won't start up at all in OS9. I called tech support at OWC and they weren't very helpful - either that, or I'm just really stupid. That's probably it...
At any rate, they told me that I needed to install an OS9 Patch (mvrm???) from the CD that the processor came with. Darned if I can find it on the cd - dont know what it would be called. He also told me that I'd need to trash the CPU pluing folder from the OS9 system folder; extensions.
Does any of this sound right to you wizards out there? Can you please advise?

Hi, SCShisler. If the upgrade you installed is this one, it is unambiguously guaranteed to be compatible with OS 9.2.2. If that's the OS 9 version that's installed on your Mac, get back on the phone with PowerLogix tech support and insist that they stick with you until you understand what they're telling you and your upgrade is working as advertised. If they won't do that, they don't need your business: return the product and insist on a full refund.
I had my own horror-story experience with PowerLogix tech support several years ago. I hope they've learned something about customer service since then, but if that seems not to be true, I see no reason for you or anyone else to put up with impatience, poor communication skills, or condescension from them. Insist on being treated well and helped effectively, and don't hesitate to demand a refund if PowerLogix can't or won't give you good service.

  • Data transfer from 08 macbook pro that won't start up to new macbook pro?

i have a 2008 macbook pro which won't start up properly, although, it will will start up with the Ctrl+T command which to my knowledge allows it to become like an external hard drive.
my question is, which cable will i need to transfer data to my newer macbook pro that only has thunderbolt connections, and what are the limitations to the files i can move over? basically i need all my document files, iTunes files, and garage band files...

    1. You need a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter.
    2. All of your personal files can be moved over.

  • IMac won't start up with iPod plugged in?

Just bought a new imac, and it's working perfectly. It reads my iPod with no problems, but i've noticed that when I turn my iMac on sometimes, it won't start up. Just kinda stays at the beginning white screen.
It only does it when my iPod is plugged in, however. ( 60GB iPod video ) Anyone think there might be a reason? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me with this, it's somewhat bothersome to have to make sure to eject my iPod before restarting.
    Thanks

Thank you for your support and time, but im afraid my problem still persists. A friend suggested I check what other files I had on the iPod, but none of them seem like they would interfere with the startup.
If anyone else has any suggestions, i'd be happy to try them. Thanks for your time.

  • G4 MDD won't start up after new memory and DVD drive Install

After watching an online video demonstration on how to add RAM and install a new DVD drive in a G4, I decided it was something I could do myself. It all seemed to go well, but after I put it back together and plugged it back in, the light comes on when I press on the power button, but the computer won't start up.
I'm running 10.4.? and I just installed an extra 512 MB RAM and a Samsung DVD+R in the lower drive slot. I also looked at some other posts/threads and decided to reset the PMU button. -No change after that.
I'm trying to get this computer in working order to pass onto my mom when I visit her next week.
    Any suggestions?

I have had some of the same problems that you have experienced. I have a dual 1.25 g PowerMac w/ 2 g of ram, the Superdrive, and 4 separate drives. My main boot drive was a 160 GB WD Caviar. I also had a 160 Maxtor and (2) 120 GB WD caviares (the 120s were raided for video. The 160 WD started giving me some problems so I decided to replace it with a 500 GB WD Caviar Blue. I installed it in the machine and initialized it. I left the jumper on the drive in the cable select position. I tried to backup using Carbon Cloner and kept getting and error on one file. I re-initialed the drive to make sure it was wiped clean. I then started to back up the old drive file by file. I kept getting messages saying the drive was full. THat wasn't true as there wasn't anything on it. After several attempts to move files, I decided to put the machine back together without the new drive.
Now the real fun begins. I had trouble with the machine booting. I zapped the PRAM and did everything I could think of to get it to boot. It wouldn't so I figured it was something I did. I let the machine sit for a day or two to give me some time to calm down. I read some articles in this support section as well as some articles on several sites I could find. The machine would not only not boot but it would not even beep. I opened the machine up and tried to clean out some of the dust in it. hen I removed the battery and let it sit for a few hours. Then I held the PMMU button on the motherboard in for a long 5 seconds. I put the battery back and waited an hour or so. I tried to start the machine and got nothing. It doesn't beep but the monitor lights up as it thinks the machine is on. I've all but given up on the machine.
Now I know this is long but I have another problem. I took out the 160 GB WD boot drive and used one of the external devices called an Ultradock v4 to connect the drive to my G4 Powerbook. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to back my 160 WD boot Drive to an external 750 gb Maxtor drive that is partitioned into 3 drives. I backed up the 160 WD Boot drive to it. I didn't pay attention to how much space was used on one of the partitions. I then backed up the Maxtor to the 500 gb WD Caviar Blue. The original WD 160 gb drive took up about 197 gb on the Maxtor which in turn took about the same space on the new WD 500 gb Caviar blue. I am at a loss as to why more space is taken up by backing up from a 160 gb drive to a roughly 225 gb partition when it was less than 160 used originally.
    Any ideas?

  • [Solved] QJackCtl won't start in with real time.

    Hey all,
I'm having a problem with QJackCtl, I got my version from Extra. The problem is that for some reason Jack won't start in real time mode using QJackCtl. Real Time is checked and marked under the set-up tab, but that little piece of info doesn't seem to make it to jackd. If I start Jack through CLI it works with real time, but not from the GUI.
I figured this out by starting JACK from the command line and then starting QJack. When I would do that it would be running in real time just without the rest of my settings (buffer, periods, sampling rate, etc).  So in my head there's an issue with QJackCtl. I've tried to find a solution, but I can't seem to find one. This isn't the first time I've set JACK up on a system, but this is the first time I've had this problem.
The rest of the system is set up and ready to go. Rt Kernel, limits.conf and all other tuning is done.
Is there something I missed when setting this piece of software up? Any ideas?
    Solved Edit:
Okay, so right after I posted this I got a crazy idea. When you enter setup in qjackctl on the first page there's a box for server path. The path defaults to "jackd". On that line I added "--realtime", so it looked like a basic CLI start-up of JACK and now it works!
So, if anyone else has this problem go to the Setup tab, in the setup window on the line that says Server Path it should look like this:
    jackd --realtime
It worked for me and I hope it helps somebody else out.

Which volume? Assuming you're on the most common usecase (single hw audio device) then whatever command line you use (amixer for example) it'll work fine, it'll control the volume of the device rather than the pulseaudio plugin (so other playing apps get affected as well, which is probably what you want). The 'global' volume so to speak.
For multiple hw audio devices it gets tricky though.

  • Dual G4 Won't start up with ethernet internet connection plugged in

    Hi,
My Dual 533mhz won't start up when the ethernet cord is pluged in. This recently started happening out of the blue (at least, I can't recall doing anything that might cause this). When I leave the ethernet cord in, the computer starts up with a network disk icon flashing and never goes away. When I don't have the ethernet cord plugged in, the computer still blinks with the network disk, but eventually changes to an OS 9 question mark folder, where it blinks some more and finally boots up normally.
The ethernet cord is one from a router.

Open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences, select your hard disk as the startup disk, and quit System Preferences.

  • Power Mac G5 - Won't start up with the beep noise.

    Hi all,
I am wondering if someone can help me with my problem. I've just gone to turn on my G5 after dusting out the inside (i unplugged the power supply and then lightly dusted the inside) and now it won't turn on.
The power light comes on, but there is no beep, and the fans start, but they gradually get louder. The white power light then flashes once in a while
Can anyone offer any help please?
    thanks
    Mark

Well - as long as you have pressed the button firmly once, that should be it.
I did wonder if you had disturbed the RAM while you were rummaging inside - is there a pattern to the flashes of the white power light, as described at the bottom of the page here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527
If not, as the mains power has been disconnected, it's just possible that the internal back-up battery may need replacing

  • G3 Blue/White won't start up with an Icon error on screen

I just booted up my G3 Blue White for the first time since 2 years ago after I brought PB to use. However, since booted up. I can hear the chime noise and then Apple Icon (Dark Grey Apple with light Grey in the background) for a couple of sec before an error Icon on the screen showing as a circle with a single strike (diag) in the circle (same colour as Apple Icon and background) and won't go any further to run. Either batteries is flat or what ever the error is. What should I do.. Leave my mac running until batteries is fully charge but then. What about bios as this will be gone too. Is there a way to recover it?
Help help help. I would like this G3 to act as server.

B&W G3 has non-chargeable 3.6V Lithium battery. A good tutorial concerning batteries is found HERE. Have you zapped PRAM?
The icon you see could also indicate a kernel panic. Have you got your original OS X installation disc?

  • 1st generation iMac G5 won't start up with LaCie connected

Sorry if this has been asked a zillion times, but I am trying to help a friend (as you can see it is not my iMac):
She has a 1st generation iMac G5, and a LaCie external harddisk connected by firewire. The LaCie has an independent power supply, i.e. not powered by firewire.
Her iMac starts up fine when the LaCie is NOT connected, but refuses to do so when it is. This problem did not always exist.
Does anyone have the answer - better still a cure?!

Is the LaCie on and showing on the desktop when she shuts down? It's always a good idea to eject FW drives before shutting down, and to start up with them unplugged, otherwise data corruption can occur.

  • MacBook Pro won't start after installing new hard drive and me

I changed the hard drive and also upgraded the memory on a mid 2010 13 inch Mac and then used the disks that came with it to reinstall the OS that came on that disk. It worked fine and installed and then the screen came on to transfer from the time machine to the new hard drive so I said yes, and it seems to work fine but then when it finished it asked me for a password. I hadn't put a password on it so that was a surprise. I tried several things but it finally only had the option to restart and when I did that it seemed like it was starting with the apple symbol and the little gear but then it went to a Gray screen with the little gear, and then seems to freeze and then finally goes to the blue screen.  The disk to reinstall is still in the drive but I can't seem to get the install to start again. I've tried holding down the c key and starting, I've tried holding down the command plus the c key and nothing....just goes to the blue screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Any additional drivers you may need can be found Here.

  • Itunes won't update nano with new software version

Since the new software update has become available (which I'm hoping might fix my multiples in cover flow issue) I've tried on multiple occasions over a few days to download and install the update on my new nano 4th Gen.
It goes through the licence agreement bit and says it's downloading and will instal when it's done. However after a few minutes it gives an error message that the connection with the itunes server has timed out. It says check your connections and such but all is fine, even itunes own diagnostic connection test is all fine.
I've even tried the restore option but that just dies on it's attempt to get new software too and doesn't get anywhere.
I'm pretty good with computers but this one's now got me stumped.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Are you using a dial-up or broadband internet connection? If your using a dial-up connection, that might be your problem. If your using a broadband connectin and your getting this problem, you might just want to contact technical support.

  • White screen at reset.  Won't start up with install disk.

White Screen persists on restart. Folder with ? appears after a few minutes. Tried safe start - nothing. Tried RAM reset (option, cmd, p, r) - nothing. Tried to restart with C key to use install disk, C drive powers and spins for awhile - nothing. Thought its was hard drive but, wouldn't install disk by pass that?
    No outside devices plug in.
Son's computer, he plug in iphone and it wouldn't show on desktop so he reset the computer and now this.
    Help!

I have the same issue. I had noticed over previous weeks that the fan seemed to be on quite a lot when the computer was just left idling. Anyway- there is now an odd repetitive intermittent clicking as it tries to start up. Get nothing then the ? folder. I have tried all the tips in the manual. Managed to load utilities disk and there is no recognition of the HD at all. All a bit worrying...
Related questions- (1) are my iPod touch photos saved in full resolution on the iPod (or do you still have to enable the iPod for this?) (2) Can I download them from the iPod to another computer. (3) Can I do the same with iTunes?
If anyone has had a similar experience and been to an engineer / service provider I would love to hear what was found, and whether the HD was recoverable.
    Many thanks all-
    Rob

  • Encore won't save project with new filename

I have just rendered a bluray disc image of a project. Now I want to save a version of the project to tweak it specifically for the DVD image, and preserve the bluray project. On the first failed saved I learned in this forum to run Encore as an administrator. Did that, but now Encore just crashes after copying most of the project files. There's enough room on the volume, as I've already corrected after that failed save.
It is a lenghty but not particularly complexly authored project consisting of a 1 hr 26 mins video timeline from a PrPro timeline exported via Adobe Bridge; a short picture gallery rendered in PrPro as an m2v video file; 2 motion and 2 still menus; and English and Japanese subtitles for the long video timeline. As the project developed I had saved progressive versions with unique filenames so I'd have restore points if a file I was working on got corrupted. No problem then.
But now in the final stages of the project I can no longer make an incremental save, Any ideas?

Yes, just a crash. Here's what Windows reports:
Faulting application name: Adobe Encore.exe, version: 6.0.1.13, time stamp: 0x4fb5057e
Faulting module name: MSVCR100.dll, version: 10.0.40219.1, time stamp: 0x4d5f034a

I have been deleting the older projects and their caches to retain disc capacity. But if the current project previews w/o problem and can output a disc image, it must have all it needs as a complete project file, right?
