OS 9 classic and Tiger

I really would like to upgrade to Tiger from OS 10.3.9. My problem is I've got some apps that still only run in Classic 9 and do not want to upgrade them for now. Can I run the classic environment along with Tiger? If I buy Tiger and upgrade will all the classic 9 I have currently stay intact?
Any info is appreciated!
iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Yes, you can upgrade to Tiger without affecting your OS 9 installation. Some things to do in advance:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Back up your current system by cloning it to an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • How to uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger?

OS 9 has become unusable, but it works fine in Classic Mode. I tried doing a reinstall and doing a clean install. I thought it would remove the old OS 9 and reinstall a new version. Instead it created a preveous folder of OS 9 and reinstalled another corupted version of OS 9! How do I uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger? Then I want to do another fresh install of OS 9. How is this done?

    Hi, basicaly tou can't.

  • Running Leopard on one partition and Tiger on another partition?

I have recently purchased a family pack of Leopard, and I am reading up on a lot of the posts, here, before I venture the installation on two machines. I intend to install Leopard one machine at a time and give a few weeks between installations.
One machine is a 20" 2.0 Ghz Intel - IMAC Aluminum (August 2007), and the other is a G4 Powerbook 17" 1.67ghz 250GB HD. I will probably install on the IMAC first.
My question concerns the G4 Powerbook 17." I have just purchased a 250gb internal hard drive; however, it has not arrived yet. From time to time, I want to be able to run a few programs in classic....., and to have that available to me in the rare event that I want to look at files formatted for classic programs. Call me old fashion or unable to let go of the past... .in any event, I have some files that may be difficult to convert or some software that I do not want to purchase in OS X because I use those programs so rarely.
Initially, I considered just having an external fire wire drive with Tiger installed on it in which I could boot classic up on the rare occasion.
My new idea has been to partition the internal drive to have 10 gb or so available for Tiger. Has anyone successfully run Leopard on one partition and Tiger on the other partition or do they potentially cause problems for one another? Any suggestions, recommendations or concerns are welcomed.

Works like a champ. I run Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and OS 9 on the G4 w/o problems.
Get a bootable, external HD, partition it into enough volumes to accommodate each machine, and make bootable backups/clones of each machine before upgrading/updating and ensure that each boots that machine and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • Spotlight and cmd-F (find) and Tiger Cache Cleaner

OK it's taken me years, but I finally have a Mac with the "classic" applications selection menu (ASM) on the absolute far right - thanks to "ASM" shareware and Tiger Cache Cleaner to remove Spotlight.
But when I re-activate Spotlight, I see that it now has to spend 4 hours recataloging my HD. OK, not a problem, but I wonder if I use cmd-F "FIND" is this going to be much much slower than a cataloged SPOTLIGHT?
    What about EasyFind 3.9?
And with cmd-F (FIND) (like with Spotlight) is there any way (other than cut and paste) to have the Mac WAIT until I've typed all my search letters BEFORE it starts going crazy and searching? I typed "S" and before I got to type "Steve" I had a zillion files that it had found...
OK and any comments on how safe this is to have used Tiger Cache Cleaner to remove Spotlight... appreciate that!
(now how to get rid of the Apple application menu in words and replace that (just to the right of the APPLE menu) with just the application LOGO to save Menu Bar space. I know a HAXIE does that, but Haxies mess-up and slow down my MacBook Intel core duo 2 ghz just tooooo much.
    Thanks!
    Steve

EasyFind works fine. It's slower than Spotlight because it doesn't use an index, but it can find things Spotlight can't.
To eliminate the "live" search behavior of Spotlight, use a third-party Spotlight front-end (there are several on versiontracker.com).

  • Installing Leopard and Tiger on the same computer ...

    Hi,
How could I install both system, Leopard and Tiger, on my iMac G5 giving me the possibility to startup from one of them at a time ...
I want this to have this possibility to run occasionally classic (with Tiger) while using mainly Leopard. Is this possible ? What are the drawbacks of this possibility ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your feedback ...
Smokerz's comment was not clear to me. I thought he meant that having 2 «Applications» folders is «complicating» things. I am french canadian and sometimes english way of speaking is not fully understood. That is why I asked for a confirmation.
I thought that since all partitions would be available, that with 1 «Applications» folder, apps could be used in both world. If I have 2 versions of MS Word, witch one will open when double clicking on a Word document. I think that what we have to keep in mind is that apps have to be Tiger «and» Leopard compatible. Maybe I misunderstand, but that is what I see as the potential problem.
If what Smokerz meant is to have 2 independent systems, it is not what I was looking for when beginning this thread. I have been using OS 9 and OS x with the advantage of switching from one environment to the other and loved that possibility. I thought that I could have an environment where all my documents could be available when working either in Tiger or Leopard. If I desired to have OS 9 for my accounting package, I would startup my Imac with Tiger and Classic. Once finished, I would reboot with Leopard.
I know that there is an emulator called «SheepSaver» to run OS 9 on Intel machine, but have not been to confirm the speed of that solution. Maybe it is also possible to run it on PPC machines ... I will look into this possibility.
    Thanks for helping.

  • Is There a Way to Retro-istall Classic onto Tiger?

On installing Tiger onto an empty hard drive, I did not install Jaguar first and then do an archive and install. So I do not have Classic installed next to Tiger. I had mistakenly assumed it came with Tiger, like it did with Jaguar.
But I want to have use of Classic.
    1) Is there a way to install Classic only without disrupting Tiger?
    2) Could I drag/copy files from a hard drive on which I did do an archive and install and still have Classic and have it work?
It took a long time to install Tiger with all the applications, including having to call Adobe for their phone-tree navigating, time consuming, re-authorizing of CS2 (I love Adobe products other than that). And I don't have time to reinstall everything again just to have Classic. But I want use of some of my older programs.
    Is there a way?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Good heavens, I would love to reward points every respondent
It would be nice to be able to do that.
Under the original format of the Discussion forums, you could do that. You could give points to those who were helpful (as many as you had points for - your points allowance accumulated daily), and you could take points from those who were just being rude or obnoxious.
When they instituted the new Forum format a little while back, they did away with that.
The new system allows only the original poster of the question to award points (previously anyone who found it helpful could award points).
Further, the new system only provides for 2 "helpful" points and 1 "Answered" point per discussion.
It is a bit confining. But, that's the method they've chosen.
Many people have complained. But, so far no response has been offered. Hopefully they will find a good compromise some day.
I do appreciate your points though And, I am glad to help when I can.
I'm sure everyone else here appreciates the sentiment in your thank you
We all appreciate it when the original poster says "Thank you".
As for making improvements to the discussions, there is a place to make suggestions:
    Discussion's Feedback:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076
    Hope this helps.
Likewise, I hope that all the suggestions here were helpful in assisting you to find a way to get your system configured the way you want it.
Be sure to let us all know (by posting) if you have other questions.
There's a lot of good people here who will try to help when they can.

  • Need help with Classic and OS 9.

I have searched on this issue and while I found a lot of posts I am still unsure what to do.
I just purchased some software that says it can be used on OS 8, 9 or X.
I have a G5 iMac running 10.4.3 and my wife has a G4 iBook running 10.3.9. Neither of us have ever used anything that has needed Classic before.
When we try to install the software we get a message that says:
"Classic cannot find a Mac OS 9 system folder on the startup disk to use."
I am confued that I get this message since the software package says OS X.
I assume this means that I need to install classic on our machines. Since she has Panther I believe there is Classic on her start-up disks but I have no idea how to use them or where to start. Some of the things I read says that I need to uninstall Panther or Tiger to install Classic.
For me (using Tiger) I don't think I have Classic on my disks. Can I use her disks to load Classic on my machine? Also, in looking at some Apple documents I found something called Software Restore.dmg that I downloaded to my machine but again, I don't know what to do with it. Does this contain Classic?
I have an external drive attached to my network via Ethernet and mounted on our desktops. I can't boot from it but can I load Classic onto that drive and just run it like an application?
Does classic take up a lot of space on the hard drive?
As you may have guessed, I am not that familiar with how to handle this and would appreciate any and all direction. If I have left out any critical information please let me know and I will post additional info. as needed.
    Thanks.
    David

    Joe:
Thanks for the prompt reply. In looking at my install Disc 2 I found that I could install the OS 9 package and I got the software to run. Thanks.
    As it turns out, all the software that I purchased did was install a bunch of Word and Excel templates onto my computer via Classic. I don't actually need the application any longer to use these templates going forward so my next question is;
How do I uninstall OS9 from my computer?
It appears I have several new folders in my Mac HD in Finder. They are:
    Application (Mac OS9)
    Desktop Folder (this is empty)
System Folder (the contents are about Classic and Classic Support etc.)
Would I just drag them to the trash to uninstall OS9? Are there any preference files I should delete?
Or am I best to just leave this in my system for possible future use? Having recently converted from Windows I am still of the mindset that I need to get off anything I don't really need or use.
    Thanks again,
    David

What happens when the iPod is plugged in?  anything?  any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone?  All music should exist on the computer.  Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.

  • Question regarding Classic and Advance table

    Hi,
I have classic and advance table. I am populating with VO that brings 100 record. When i render page i see last record being displayed. How can i show my first record by defult on both tables?

By default the first record will be displayed, if you are seeing the last one instead, you probably did a vo.last() in the code.
    Thanks

I recently rented a movie to add on my ipod classic and it wasn't transferring when I would sync so I manually move it to my ipod but when I go on my ipod it is not there and it is no longer in my purchases on itunes.  help!

Is this on your computer or on iPad/iPhone ? If you are on an iPad or iPhone then it should have downloaded into the Videos app - iTunes on those devices is just the iTunes store, and if you just see the Ts & Cs link on the Downloads tab then that means that there are no outstanding downloads waiting.

  • IPod Classic and Audiobooks (Audible, not MP3)

Just curious...has anyone else noticed (and been annoyed by) the fact that Audible audiobooks are no longer accessible anywhere except the "Audiobook" menu?
This bothers for one rather large reason...I ahve a rather large number of Audible audiobooks, and rather than scroll through Every. Single. One, I enjoyed scanning the authors and titles via the "Genre" menu. This capability, sadly, seems to have vanished from the Classic, and I assume the new Nanos as well.
Other than making specific playlists for certain authors, anyone found a way to force the new interface to play nice with these and not separate them from the rest of your music?

I agree there's a problem and I sure hope that Apple fixes it in the next firmware update for the Classic iPod.
I have used every version of iPod (not nanos or whatever just iPods) and this one has definitely broken audiobook organization. On every previous model I simply went to "artists" and selected the name of the author and then had a nice list of the books (using the "album" attribute for book title) and then I could select the part of the book that I wanted to dive into which I could title using the song title attribute. I never ever found the straight audiobook listing particularly useful.
Now I've got to use the amusing "search" mechanism or spend a bunch of time screwing around with playlists to try and put some order in the chaos that some misguided engineers have introduced.
I can not for the life of me understand how the current audiobook category behavior ever got signed off on by QC and usability studies. The iPod Classic as it stands now is almost exclusively a music box rather than what I used to have which was a library of books. I do have music on my iPod but I rarely ever listen to it; rather, I spend hours each evening and in the early hours listening to various books some in audible.com format some that I've converted myself from CD or cassettes and so on
This is without a doubt the most completely non-user-engineered downgrade to an otherwise sterling product line that I've ever seen.
