OS 9 Classic stalls on start up

I have an iBook, running 10.4.11. I can afford to upgrade to a Pentium processor MacBook, but choose not to do so because of thousands of dollars worth of software I have that works only on OS 9, so I need to keep 10.4, which, on the old Motorola processor, will run both X and 9-Classic.
The problem is that I had a previous iBook and woke up one night to the sound of the hard drive making a grinding sound. Of course I immediately shut it off. I then shipped it to my son, who is also a Mac devotee. He not only picked me up another iBook at a reasonable price, but took the HD out of my old iBook, put it in an external USB hard drive case, and it worked fine, so he sent me both. The iBook worked great, both in X and 9-Classic, so I began transferring (drag & drop) everything over from my old hard drive to the new iBook.
After I finished, I tried to start 9 Classic - the Classic screen would pull up and the progress bar would begin to move, but stall after it had filled in roughly 1/16 of an inch. I could leave it on all night, but it still wouldn't load any further. I noticed I had SoftWare Restore in the Application Support folder of my OS 9 System Folder, and thought restoring my 9 software might make a difference, but discovered 9 has to start up before the restoration app can be used, so I'm back at square one.
I'm usually very knowledgeable with Macs (still have an old LC, as well as 2 Bondi iMacs), but this has me stumped. I'm betting I pulled something over from my old hard drive that I shouldn't have and it's creating a conflict, but I can't imagine what it could have been. I've tried starting up with extensions off, but that doesn't work either. I can't use any of my OS 9 software, and could sure use some recommendations.

Hi BD, good to hear from you again. You might remember I posted this just before T-giving, and was advised to try again after the holiday, as likely many were away celebrating.
As I mentioned above, "I've tried starting up with extensions off, but that doesn't work either." So, nope.
I once did call-in Mac Tech Support, and after "Have you checked to see if it's plugged in?" the second most frequent question I asked was, "Have you tried starting with extensions off?"
Note particularly, in the screen shot below, the tiny area on the left of the progress bar, indicating that it started to load, then stopped.

  • Classic freezes or stalls when started in OS X 10.4.6

    Hello,
The classic environment freezes or stalls when it is started from OS X 10.4.6. In the expanded classic window pane, the smiling mac on the grey background appears, then the "welcome to Mac OS" appears (Mac OS 9.1). The blue progress bar at the top shows only a small sliver of blue on the left, and the progress bar does not advance at all. After many minutes, 10 or 15 so the classic window closes, perhaps a time-out limit, and has not started.
Mac OS X 10.4.6 was just recently installed on our Mac G4 from CD (4 CDs) rather than the OS X DVD, since we only have an internal CD drive. Our Mac is a 733 MHz PowerPC G4 (2.0) with 1 CPU; 512 MB SDRAM, 1 MB L3 cache, and 32 GB of available disk space. Let me know if other details would help with a diagnosis.
I have tried the suggestions given in the other forum articles that talk about the classic envirionment freezing or stalling such as:
blessed the Mac OS 9.1 system folder,
    rebuilt the desk top,
removed the OS 9.1 servers folder,
turned off extensions in the classic options,
    disconnected all external devices,
searched for the DivX folder, but didn't find it.
Are there other things I should try to permit classic to start from OS X?
Other forum articles seem to indicate that starting up classic in OS X allows older software to run in OS X. Is that true, or am I missing something?
By changing the start up disk to OS 9.1 the Mac will boot up directly to OS 9.1 (the previous OS used for many years) without any problem. Our current work around for older applications is to change the start up disk and boot up directly to OS 9.1.
Your advice and help is appreciated. My goal is to be able to start the classic Mac OS from OS X to run old applications like MS Office. Thanks for your help.

    Greg
Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   classic freezes during start up

    Hi Robbie,
Thanks for your reply to my question. I'll try to describe how I start classic in more detail. I have tried starting classic from the top menu bar icon (and from the classic system preferences form), and by trying to directly start an OS 9 application (like Word or Excel).
When I launch classic from the top menu bar icon a new window opens with the "smiling mac" on the grey background followed by the "welcome to Mac OS". At that point nothing else happens for a long time (no progress bar movement, no other forms or windows opening), in excess of 10 to 15 minutes. If the classic form closes after the long wait, the classic system preferences form still has a "start" button, so I presume that classic has not started. OS 9 applications do not start at that point. Should the progress bar move while classic is loading? I'm pretty sure that the blue progress bar in the classic window never moves, even when the classic window closes.
When directly opening an OS 9 application like Word or Excel the classic window opens, but again no change to the progress bar and the classic window stays open for a long time. The OS 9 application does not start.
Does this description help? Let me know if I can provide more details of what happens. I would be glad to try any tests you suggest, and report on the outcome, to help diagnose this problem. I can also try upgrading to OS 9.2.2; can you point me to an easy way for that upgrade? I'll check around the apple web site too.
Since the Mac can be booted up directly to OS 9.1 or OS X (by selecting the startup disk) it seems like there may be something that is interfering with classic being launched from OS X. Perhaps there are other files or preferences that can be disabled or removed in hopes of removing the interference and gettting classic to launch?
Thanks again for your help with this classic start up problem.
    Regards,
    Greg

  • Classic stalls- due to corrupt extensions?

My Classic environment stalls during start up.
I originally followed the advice in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106835
    to no avail.
I had also tried to start up with extensions off, which works, but leaves me without extensions. You may view my previous post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=499926&tstart=0
I have since gone through the entire extensions folder and tried each one by one (starting up Classic after each addition) and found 18 extension files to seemingly be corrupt. I've placed these in the disabled extensions folder and Classic starts up without stalling.
However, I can't open any applications.
When I try to open a classic application it bounces in the dock, stops bouncing and does not go away, the triangle underneath does not appear, the application does not appear, and it won't respond to quit commands.
Also, when I try to open a Classic application without first separately starting up Classic, the Classic start up will stall.
I've tried reinstalling Classic with the Software Install and Restore disk, and repaired disk permissions. After doing this I attempted to reinstall/restore software (photoshop 6) from its disk and the installer application, a Classic application, wouldn't open.
I can't imagine what else could be effecting the start up. If there's anything else I can do, or redo I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.
    Thank you.

Hi, Cabbitsu. I suggest starting up from your Panther installer disk 1, opening Disk Utility from the Installer menu, and running DU's "Repair Disk" routine repeatedly until it reports twice in a row that your disk "appears OK". Then perform another new installation of Classic — a Clean Install if that option is available to you — and test again.
I can't assure you that this will be the solution to your problems, but it is likely that they stem from some corruption of your hard drive directory, and this procedure will reveal and probably repair such corruption.
If DU's "Repair Disk" routine never gives your drive a clean bill of health without reporting that it had to fix something, you will need a stronger disk utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to make the necessary directory repairs.

  • Classic won't start up PLEASE HELP!!!

I am using OS X on a powerbook G4 and classic will not start up. THe status bar comes on but does not move, it remains in the same postion, not freezing.
I have left it for over an hour and still nothing...
Does anyone have advice on why classic is not starting up?

I don't know for sure, but it may be an extensions conflict. Did you change anything in the System Folder lately.
If you go to the Advanced tab in the System Preferences Classic panel, you should see an option to start Classic with extension off. If that works, you'll have to do some detective work to figure out which non-Apple extension is causing the problem.
If you only use Classic under Mac OS X (you don't boot directly into Mac OS 9 anymore) there are ways to optimize Classic System Folder. If you do a Google search on "optimize classic mac" you should see some web sites. The one on LowEndMac.com is here.
    http://www.lowendmac.com/practical/02/0507.html
You can also create a separate "for Classic under Mac OS X only" System Folder (and put it anywhere, even on a disk image), if you want to keep a bootable "fully enabled" System Folder.

  • Classic won't start, can't upgrade, and other problems...

There's something not quite right with my Mac, and I can't quite pinpoint it. Because of this, I'm not even certain I'm posting this in the right forum! Here's the situation:
I have a PowerMac G4, upgraded with a an extra hard drive, an ATI Radeon Pro graphics card, a Sonnet Duet G4 Dual 1.8GHz processor, and (as of today, prior to this 10.4.7) am running OSX 10.4.8.
When I got the machine, it came with OS 9.1 installed. I later upgraded to 9.2.2, and then eventually to OSX. My Classic system folder stayed at 9.2.2
About 10 days ago I installed the Sonnet processor upgrade. In order to do so, I had to rejig my system a bit, as the installer for the upgrade only works in 9.2 and not Classic (yeah, bad call on Sonnet's part).
I partitioned my Back-Up drive, and installed 9.2 on it, installed the software for the processor, and then the processor itself. After checking everything worked, I then unpartitioned my Back-Up drive and removed OS9.2.
Although the processor works fine, and has doubled the speed of most tasks, ever since it was installed, I have been prone to crashes. Most often when working with large files in various applications such as Photoshop.
Also, Classic won't start now. I hardly ever use Classic these days, only for one or two tiny programs I could live without, but the fact that it refuses to start is niggling me. I reinstalled OS9.1 from my original disk, and now I can't upgrade to 9.2: all that happens is I get a message saying that I have 9.1 and that it is recommended I upgrade to 9.2! But Classic won't open, so I can't upgrade to 9.2.
The next thing that's started happening is that my broadband connection keeps dropping. This never happened before. This is happening so frequently it's really annoying; the only thing that cures it is a restart, but restarting 10 times a day isn't funny. I'm using an Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL modem. This has worked fine for over a year.
Yesterday I tried setting up a wireless connection with a Belkin router, replacing my USB modem, so my wife can use her Windows laptop to surf from the same broadband connection (my Mac doesn't need to be wireless enabled itself). But this hasn't worked, even though we followed the instruction manual exactly. I suspect that the reason this hasn't worked was because of the underlying problem on my Mac, whatever it is. I've gone back to using the Speedtouch modem to connect to the internet for now.
I've just today done a complete system reinstall of OSX 10.4, and downloaded the upgrade to 10.4.8, in an effort to solve this. Unfortunately, my Mac still seems to be in the same state and it hasn't solved anything. Classic still won't open, the connection still keeps dropping, and I'm almost at the point of kicking the **** thing through a window! Please, has anyone got any bright ideas? I don't know where to start....
    G4 Digital Audio   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi, thanks for responding.
I've made a couple of changes, double-checked everything, and I have to say that now 10.4.8 has been on my machine for a few days, it's a lot more stable. No crashes. Maybe it just needed to "settle in", ha ha. I also got a router and went wireless, something I needed to do so my wife could use her laptop to get online. This seems to have solved the connection dropping.
So the only thing left is not being able to open Classic. I think maybe you're right, and the new processor doesn't like Classic. But, to tell the truth, I hardly ever use Classic anymore, and I can live without it. So I think I'll leave everything as it is for now, unless something major happens. I spent nearly £500 on the processor upgrade, and it has doubled the speed of my Mac: I really don't want to have to take it out:-)

  • Classic Won't Start from OS 10.2.8

    Hello all,
I am having a problem with one of the machines in my office. Classic just won't start. I tried rebuilding the desktop and repairing permission but, to no avail. I can restart the machine from the OS 9 folder wihout a problem but from OS X classic will attempt to start and then hang. No startup screen nothing.
    In a word....HELP.
    Thanks

OK this isn't a permenent fix but it will work so you can open up Classic Applications and Files.
    1. Go into System Preferences.
    2. Under the System Section click the Classic Button.
    3. In this window that comes up click the Advanced Tab at the top.
    4. Inthe drop down select it to "Turn Off Extensions"
    5. Now click "Start Classic"
It should start up fully and now you can go about opening any Classic files or Applications.

  • ILOST MY PHOTOS ON IPOD CLASSIC AFTER I START SYNC THEM ON ITUNNES

ILOST MY PHOTOS ON IPOD CLASSIC AFTER I START SYNC THEM ON ITUNNES AND IT GIVES THIS MASAGE
IT SAYS pHOTOS FOLDER SYNCING HAS BEEN DISABLED FOR T IPOD BECAUSE THE FOLDER " XX" CAN NOT BE FOUND
AND AFTER THAT I DID NOT SEE MY PHOTOS ON IPOD

Is the computer that you allowed the iPod to Sync with the same one that you originally synced with, or a different one?
If it is the same computer, then the photos should still be on the computer. So once again, what happened to the photos folder that was on the computer?
If it is a different computer, then I think iTunes has removed the photos, along with the music.
You can only Sync an iPod with one iTunes Library. If you attempt to Sync with a second computer, iTunes will warn you that everything will be removed from the iPod and only content from the second Library will be on the iPod.

    Hi,
The problem is an alias issue.
It is aliases that are stored in the Classic System Folder > Apple Menu Items folder.
It would be an idea to trash all aliases in this folder, but start with just deleting the Sherlock 2 alias and restarting Classic.
It worked for me. How about you?
    It was driving me MAD!
    Hope it helps you all.

  • OS 9 Classic won't start

I'm trying to use Hypercard on OS 10.3.9 slot loading iMacs but Classic OS 9 won't start. All indications are that Classic is starting but the progress bar stalls near the end. There are 7 machines in my lab of 27 having this problem. All of the machines are essentially the same with regards to OS, applications, RAM, storage, etc. All machines have OS 9.2.2 installed with all of the OS 9 updates.

    Thanks for the input.
I removed and replaced the sys 9 folder with one from a functional computer but classic would not recognize the new one. I've been working with Macs for nearly 15 years now and have never had luck attempting to simply replace the system folder.
Disabling the extensions on classic startup did work as a work-around but in the end I re-installed OS 9 and its updates to take care of the problem. I really didn't want to take the time to search out the culprit extension.

  • New iPod Touch 32gb stalls after starting sync, error 54, manual synce gets dumped

I just got this thing at Walmart last Sunday and its been driving me nuts all week! It's the brand new iPod Touch 32gb 4gen. When trying to sync it will start to load music then stall. Sometimes it gives error code 54, sometimes says it cant convert song, cant find song, or just stalls. If I wait anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour it will finally un-freeze and dump everything or say the connection has timed out. I've ran repair on iTunes from control panel, no help. Un-installed iTunes and re-installed it then tried synce, no help. I un-selected everything in the iPod summary so that it wont try to synce when I connect it and selected manual synce. Then I could sync a few songs at a time, but it still stalls after only loading a few songs on iPod. Tried dumping everything out of the ipod and start over, several times, no help. I've been 6 days, all day, every day, and half the nights getting a few songs at a time on this dam thing. I found when it stalls if I turn the iPod off to force it out of iTunes I can then restart iTunes, reconnect the iPod, manually select 15 to 20 songs and drag them to the iPod. A few times I got over a hundred to sync but usually 20 to 30 songs then it stalls. Then I have to do the whole thing over again. I had a little over 1200 songs out of the 1877 songs, 11.28gb, in my music library when the last time it stalled, it dumped everything. 4 or 5 days of manually syncing a few songs at a time, GONE. Just poof, all that work for nothing. The only thing left on it is 92 of the hundred something songs I've bought from iTunes. I'm ready to take a hammer to the dam thing and send it back to Walmart where I got it.
I'm using a Dell Studio 17 inch laptop that's about 4 yrs old running Windows 7 that I installed 2 years ago. I had a iPod nano 2gb that worked fine with this computer & iTunes untill it died last spring.
Why do you have it set up so that one little hickup and the dam thing dumps everything thats on it? I cant even stop it from starting to sync when I connect it because I need to see the settings in the summary for the iPod to change the settings, but I cant see that until I connect it, but as soon as I connect it, it try's to start the sync and stalls feezing everything.
Can anybody help me before this thing drives me completely over the edge!?
    The ColoradoHermit

I have a older Dell Optiplex desktop computer running Windows XP. I copied the iTunes  folder on my laptop to an external drive and plugged that into my desktop computer. Then connected the iPod Touch to the desktop. For some reason or other the computer thought the iPod was a camera and wanted to know which photo program to open with or for it. I never did get iTunes on my desktop computer to "see" the iPod and had to give up that idea.
When going into the My Computer or Windows Explorer - which is the one I like to use for working with my files-  when I connect the iPod to my computer in Windows Explorer it will show the iPod. Open that and it shows Internal Storage, open that and a folder with DCIM shows below it, open that and a folder with 860OKMZO on it shows below that, open that and it has the 40 or 50 photos I saved from Facebook. That's it, there isn't anything else shown in its storage. The iTunes on my old Desktop doesn't see the iPod Touch either.
Even if the iTunes on my old desktop would work with this iPod Touch it wouldn't do me any good. I read in a post that once it is connected to a iTunes Library, if its connected to any other iTunes Library on a different computer it will dump everything that's on it. Which is totally stupid but I think they - iTunes - have it that way so that you cant share your music with somebody elses computer. But that also makes it so I cant manually sync one thing at a time with my own iTunes Library. I tried syncing my music first and after I got some of it on the iPod, in its summary I deselected the music sync and selected the movies or video's so I could manually synce a few to it to see if it would work. Bad move. As soon as I did that it dumped everything that was on it, then said that it could not sync the movies because the files could not be written. HUH? Why a video from YouTube could not be written beats me. But why did it dump all the music?
The last thing I did with it was put all the options in the summary in iTunes back to default, removed everything on the iPod that was left after its last dump, then disconnected it, closed iTunes, and rebooted my laptop and started over from scratch. Started iTunes, connected the iPod, after iTunes found it I opened the iPod summary, made sure everything except sync photo's was selected, then started the sync function. It immediately listed all the songs and the songs info in light gray under music on the iPod. It only got 2 songs copied, then stalled. I just left it alone to see what it would do. I opened the Windows Task Manager to see what it was doing. Even though the iTunes program appered to be stalled it was using 50% of the CPU. After about 15 minutes it showed a popup window saying the song could not be writen then another saying its connection to the iPod had timed out, then iTunes stalled and "not responding" showed in task manager and at the top of the iTunes window. After 30 minutes I had to force it to close with the Task Manager. By then it was after midnight and had been another 12 hours wasted messing with this thing.

  • Classic Freezes in start up!!

I am running a 15 inch powerbook, and when i go to play games that used classic, the classic bar comes up that says "classic starting using systems folder" but the status bar just stays on and doesn't advance, it is not frozen, just keeps it there.
I have already turned off extensions under system preferences, so that isn't it. Any other suggestions?????

I just ran that Mac OS 9 support installer on my G5. I noticed that if a System Folder already exists on the target volume, it installs "on top of" the existing System Folder. It does not give a choice to do a "clean" installation. That means that if there was something wrong with it, the problem may have been retained.
So if you want to try it one more time, you can:
Delete the existing System Folder, if there is nothing special about it that you want to keep.
    OR
Make a folder on the volume called anthing you want, like "Old System Folder," and drag the existing System Folder into that folder to keep until you decide to delete it.
Run the Mac OS 9 support installer again and another completely new System Folder should appear at the root (top) level of the target volume. Take a look in Finder to confirm.
Now, go back into System Preferences Classic panel and be sure to select THAT System Folder in the list box, not one that was previously installed. Click Start in that panel and see what happens.
If that still does not work, there is something else happening on the Mac OS X side. Since this is the forum for using Mac OS 9, you may want to go to the Mac OS X Tiger forum and ask the question again, or search for a similar situation to yours there.

  • Classic enviornment not starting

When I try to start classic I get a message that I haven't come across in the troubleshooting section.
It says "Cassic was unable to update it's files in "System Folder"
This problem is very recent, and classic has worked perfectly up till now. Any ideas why it wouldn't be able to update files? My thanks to everyone who can help.

    Hello jsunday,
Your Classic System Folder could be damaged. Test it. Restart your computer then hold down the Option key as it boots. This will show your bootable systems in your hard drive. If you are running 10.3.x and your System 9 system folder is OK, it should show up. If it shows up, select it and click on the right arrow to continue. If it boots in System 9 fine, restart the computer and it should reboot to 10.3.x. Try to launch Classic now.
If System 9 doesn't show or boot completely, then it is possibly corrupted or damaged. Boot from your OS 9 CD, trash the old System 9 System Folder, and do a clean reinstall. Good luck.

  • Classic won't start under Tiger

When I try to start classic, it hangs as soon as the startup "Smiley Mac" screen appears"
My computer will boot from OS9 system folder, but not start classic either from system preferences or automatically if I'm in Tiger.
I've fixed OS9 permissions from Disk Utility, turned off all extensions, rebuilt desktop, checked that there's only one OS9 on drive...what's next?
    Thanks, mavens!

Ok...at this point, we know the system will boot to 9, but not startup 9 from inside of X - rather, it starts, then hangs after the splash screen. I'm back to extensions.
I know you said you had disabled them once; I come back to the same conclusion for a couple of reasons.
If it were a disk error, bad block, or corrupted (os9) system file, then it is most probable that booting the machine to 9 would also fail. Since that works, and we know extensions are the first thing that loads on power on...
Also, I did have this same problem when I first switched to X (about v10.0.4). But it's been so long since I resolved that issue, I cannot recall which one(s) I disabled. I am using the same HD and OS9 system folder I used then (moved the drive to this machine), and have not toyed with the extension settings since resolving the problem.
Rather than use the all/no extension option in the X Classic control pane, I would boot the machine to 9, run extension manager, and select the "all off" option. This does not rely on Xs ability to disable them on the fly, and will disable any extensions that load before extensions manager does (there are a few) and is permanent (until you turn them back on.)
Reboot to X, then try to run Classic.
If it works, then rerun extension manager and select "OS9.2 extensions only" which will not load any 3rd party extensions.
