OS 9 Classic won't work on OS X

I have iMac G5 with OS 10.3.5.
I have Canoscan N656U which requires OS 9.
I have attempted to install OS 9 'Classic' on Hard Disc using the 'Additional Software' CD as supplied with hardware and by following the installation instructions on p.60 of the G5 User Guide.
When selecting 'Start Classic' message displays as follows:
"The system software on the startup disk only functions on the original media, not if copied to another drive."
The 'Restart' option does not resolve the problem.
Please, what am I doing wrong and how do I rectify the problem? Thankyou!
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

Hi, Malcy. The error message you report seeing will normally appear if one has copied the System Folder from an Apple installer CD onto a hard drive and then attempted to start the computer from it. That is not a proper OS 9.x installation procedure and will not work. If you tried that approach before you followed the correct installation instructions, the residue from that improper installation may be prompting the error message now, and the remedy may be removing all traces of OS 9 from your hard drive, then following the correct procedure again.
To remove OS 9 without being obstructed by a message that it is in use, drag the Finder and/or System files out of your OS 9 System Folder onto the desktop, then restart your Mac. Now trash the System Folder and the two files and empty the Trash. Finally, follow the correct OS 9 installation procedure again.

  • Classic won't work on lombard in OS 10.2.

I am currently running OS 10.2.8 on my Lombard and classic won't work. I also have a G5 dual 1.8 with OS 10.4 that also will not run classic...
When I startup on either computer-
    Window appears:
You have Mac OS 9.1 installed. If you want to install Mac OS 9.2... Classic will not startup.
then as classic starts, window appears:
The system software on the startup disc only fuctions on original media, not if copied to another drive.
My problem is I no longer have the OS 9.1 install disk that came with my computer...I assume I need a NEW OS 9.1 or 9.2 install/boot disc. Where can I download a copy of a OS 9.1 or 9.2 install/boot disc so I can run in Classic mode or what can I do to make classic run on these systems?
ALSO I cannot boot from the CD/DVD player on my Lombard. I recently had to go to Mac store and have the System repaired by removing the drive from the Lomard and useing a "sled" to reinstall OS. That was the only way to work it because my Lombard doesnt restart. As a matter of fact I have to "reset" in back of the Lombard evertime or most times just to startup. Could that be part of the problem besides needing a new install/boot disc?
    -Thanks
Doesn't Mac have a site where I can download a copy of a install disc for classic?

    Richard,
It sounds as though the OS 9.1 currently on your HD was drag-copied from the MacOS 9.1 CD; Apple does not permit this and thus the message you receive.
There is no free download of any complete, modern OS except OS 7.5.3, and this will do you no good. Your only solution is to install a fresh OS 9.x from a retail MacOS System CD. This can be a MacOS 9.0/9.0.4/9.1/9.2.1 CD and you can freely update any version of 9.x to 9.2.2.
In addition, if the MacOS 9 HD driver is not installed, you will be unable to boot to OS 9.x but "Classic" will still run when booted to 10.x.
The failure to start without pressing the reset button sounds like a failure of the backside L2 cache, a common issue on the Lombard. If this is the problem, the only fix is a replacement microprocessor card. When your Lombard is running, open the System Profiler and see if it reports either 512K or 1MB of L2 cache in Hardware Overview.

  • Ipod classic won't work at all. Help!

Today, my ipod has stopped working even after being able to use it earlier today. It will turn on only when connected to the wall charger (that is plugged in to an outlet) and won't connect to my mac. It flashes the apple symbol start up screen. I can only reset it when it's plugged into the charger and I can put it mannually into disk mode at that time too, but otherwise it won't work. Any help?

Ok, I ran into this same issue of a brand new iPod Classic resetting itself continuously about once every 30 seconds, and you could hear the hard clicking sound, with each reset cycle. I had to do the following to get it to work ok.
10 Simple Steps To Fix Your iPod That Is Stuck In A Continuous Reset Loop:
    1) While the iPod was resetting itself over and over (continuously resetting itself), press the Play/Pause button and the center select button simultaneously, for about 5 seconds, and it will display that it is now in disk mode.
    2) Start up iTunes on your computer and then connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable.
    3) Click on the iPod in the left pane, select "Restore" to restore it to its original blank state. Follow the prompts to continue.
    4) When the computer completes the Restore update, and it displays a message saying that the iPod will disappear and reappear in iTunes in a minute, immediately disconnect the iPod (unplug it from your USB cable).
    5) On the iPod, you should see the main menu, in a few seconds. Pick a couple of settings to update for example the English language, and Eastern Time Zone (New York or Washington, DC), etc.
    6) Press and hold the Play/Pause button to power the iPod off.
    7) Re-connect the iPod to your comptuer with the USB cable.
    8) Start syncing using iTunes, as normal.
    9) All should be well.
    10) Remember to always click on Eject in iTunes, and waiting for visual confirmation, before disconnecting the iPod.
    The End. Whew!

  • IPod classic won't work

When I turn on my iPod classic it has a big red x on it and it doesn't work. What can I do?
It tells me to go to apple support but I couldn't find anything.

So you haven't seen this article?
iPod Displays a Red "X" Icon
Note, that this symbol is often a sign that your iPod's Hard Disk is dying in need of a replacement.
Some users have been able to also resolve this issue by slapping the iPod against their thigh with a bit of force, although not too hard.

  • SCSI and Classic won't work

    Hi folks,
I have read through some threads about SCSI but can't find anything I can use for my problem. I don't even know what kind of card I have --I'm technically challenged and don't get the inner working of a computer (this includes the system, I'm afraid).
I have a G4 with a scsi card that my system profiler calls "pci9004,7850".
Connected to it is an old Agfa Scanner (and behind it two unpowered optical drives).
Well, everything works just fine as long as I boot from the old OS9 partition.
But coming from OS10.4, Classic asks me after starting the scan app (a plug-in in PS on OS9 partition) to please connect the scanner etc. I did switch on the scanner first before booting.
Is there a way to make this scanner work from OSX, or should I just continue as I have, using native OS9?
    Thank you.
    Cor

    Hi, Cor.
You wrote: "Is there a way to make this scanner work from OSX..."Assuming your scanner's manufacturer has not released updated, Mac OS X-compatible drivers, you may get your scanner to work using VueScan. Download it and try it for free with your scanner. If it works, buying a registration removes the watermark and quality degradation on test scans.
VueScan's Web site also has a list of supported and unsupported scanners.
If VueScan will not work for your scanner, another option is to look at SilverFast.
If none of these options work for you, and your scanner worked in Mac OS 9, then it may still be possible to use your scanner in Classic mode.
I use VueScan with my UMAX Astra 6450 FireWire scanner under Mac OS X with excellent results.

  • Ipod Classic won't work on old Power PC G4?

I got a 120GB Ipod Classic for Christmas from my whole family. When I tried to hook it up to my Power PC G4 Mac Mini, it told me that I needed iTunes version 8. After downloading it and attempting to it, I was informed that I needed to have OS X 10.4.11 to update to iTunes 8. I looked around and wasn't able to find any way to update to OS X 10.4.11 and wasn't sure if it was even possible with my old power PC. Are there any ways around this, or do I have to get an older Ipod? I tried adding mp3 files from my external hard drive directly to the Ipod, and while the files transferred, the never showed up on the Ipod. I'd rather not go through the hassle of selling it just to buy an older model, but if I did, would 5th gen Ipods work?

Thank you for the help, but I would prefer a solution that does not involve me having to spend more money on an operating system I don't really need. Any other solutions?

  • 160GB iPod Classic Won't Work Properly with speaker systems

My 120GB works fine with my iHome, and a new speaker system I just purchased... because I thought my iHome was broken, because when I used my 160GB in it, it didn't respond to "play/pause" commands with either the remote or the speaker command. When I tried the 160GB on the new system I bought, it didn't respond either. Should the 160GB work fine with those systems if they play the 120GB without a problem? I'm a bit confused on the issue.

    More info would be helpful
What do you see on the iPod screen when you connect to the PC?
Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software version as shown in iTunes summary page, the last time you connect successfully.? Or just, on the iPod, press Settings->About
press the select button 3 times and you will get the software version.

  • Ipod Classic 80gb won´t work with apple universal dock and remote

I own 2 ipods a 5th generation 60gb and an ipod classic 60gb. I've just bought an apple universal dock with remote and the original apple component and composite AV cables. I connected the universal dock to my TV via the composite cable, with my ipod 5th gen I can watch videos on the TV and control the ipod with the apple remote but when I connect my ipod classic to the universal dock it will charge but I can´t get any video out or control the ipod with the remote. It's as if the ipod classic doesn't recognize the universal dock and it keeps showing the connect the video accessory screen, even when i tried using the apple component AV cable. I dont think the problem is with the universal dock because it works fine with my Ipod video 60gb, but with my Ipod Classic 80gb the remote control and video out won't work at all, i can´t even control the playback of audio playlists. Does anyone know why that is happenning? Please help me!

I have the Classic 80gb also...same probem. I retuned the Apple Universal Dock and purchased one that was half the price. Pluged it in and it works perfectly! So my advice would be to save some money and get products that work.

    3. How old is your iPod?
    4. What version is your iPod?
    5. When was the last time your iPod was working?
    6. Are you using a Mac or Windows iTunes?
    7. Which version of iTunes are you using?

  • Menu and Pause buttons won't work on iPod classic.

I've had the iPod for a while, long enough that my warranty is over. My problem with the pause button started a few months ago, it would go in spurts of working fine and working on and off. In the past few weeks the menu button has started to not work as well. As of yesterday they have both completely stopped working. I've tried restoring it to factory settings, syncing it over and over, and resetting it (which I can't do now because my menu button won't work). Does anyone have any suggestions? Or is it time for me to get a new iPod...

It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's clickwheel, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damage part for a little less.  Google "iPod repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • Ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2

ipod classic won't mount after updating to itunes 11.0.2.
I updated to itunes 11.0.2 today, after delaying it for a looong time (I have it @ work and don't like the new layout).
Since then, none of my ipods will mount/show up/update. I've tried all USB ports, 3 ipods, 3 cords. Wondering if you know of any issues. I've restarted the mac about 15-20 times today since as soon as I hook up an ipod, itunes immediately spins the beach ball and won't let me click out of it.
I've restarted the ipods 10+ times each.
All of the ipods DO show up on my desktop though. Just not in itunes anywhere with 11.0.2.
One more thing: It's not the cables or the ipods: they both mount fine when connected to my laptop (running old *** 10.4.11 and itunes 9.)
Machine is a Mac Pro running 10.6.8.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!

  • HT4527 TRIED, TRIED, and TRIED!  It won't work!

    Now I have tried and
tried and tried to transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to
my new one for over half a year.  The methods described here won't
work.  Neither does the (few) ones I found on other sites.
    I would probably
have taken shorter time to download the music one more time directly
from the 300+ CDs (full format – I do not want compressed) I have
(half with classic music not available at iTunes store, Spotify or
    elsewhere), than trying...
    Some part of some
instructions here (and otherwise) does not seem to be up to date, or
details is wrong regarding Windows 8.1.  Other just don't work.  I
have also tried many other ways that my brain can come up with.  But
always only one of the CD is found by iTunes.
    Maybe Apple want one
to have all in the cloud, but a few 100s of Giggs would probably cost
me a zillion €$£s a month – so it's not an option.  Or that
things like this only can work if one has a Mac (although I have
consider buying a Mac, since Windows 8 is horrible, but I have
programs that only exists in versions that runs under Windows).
    Unfortunately this
also means that I can not sync my iPod and iPad with the new computer
(since everything on the units will be deleted when synced to a new
computer).  And this also prevents me to update to new iOS 8.  (I
have all data except music and larger sized pictures in clouds –
although this is sometimes a problem summertime at my summerhouse in
a low populated area with very bad internet possibilities.)
    So if someone
actually knows how to do this (from hard drive with files from iTune
version half year ago on XP, to latest iTunes on Windows 8.1 –
    PLEACE let me know!
    Apple should really
think about this.  There should just be a simple import function.
Copyright issues might exist, but it will be no difference than the
methods described here (if they work).  [And in Sweden we actually
pay a special tax to copyright holders on storing devices (computers,
hard drives, mobile phones, etc) to compensate for this.]
    [Also: there are
issues with this page.  When typing, it is not possible to go back in
the text and edit.  Also I had to type this one more time when the
web page just “died”.  All of IE (standard – not metro) just
locks itself and have to be aborted with ctrl+alt+del]

    Hi there beryl,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re seeing an “error 7” alert message when launching iTunes. Take a look at the article linked below, it provides more information about that alert and troubleshooting steps that’ll generally resolve the issue.

  • IPod classic won't sync after Sleep until G4 restarted

I've got an *80GB iPod Classic* (sw ver 1.1.2) that *won't sync* with my G4 Quicksilver (10.4.11) *after the computer wakes up from sleep*. If I restart the computer, I can sync with no problem, and I can disconnect the iPod and sync as many times as I like +as long as the computer doesn't go to sleep.+
My iPod is connected via a *Belkin USB 2.0 5-port PCI expansion card*. I can't remember the model number of this card, but I know a similar one would not permit my computer to wake up from sleep when it was installed.
I've consulted http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24639 and know some PCI expansion cards provoke sleep issues with the G4, but there's no specific information on what issues or which cards. The solution offered in the kb article won't work for me, either, as the Quicksilver's built-in USB is 1.0 (i.e. slow).
*Have I diagnosed the problem correctly* -- is the problem with the Belkin USB 2.0 expansion card?
If so, *is there a similar USB 2.0 card out there that doesn't induce sleep problems* (i.e. disk mounting problems after the computer wakes up)?

is itunes open when it goes to sleep? is the ipod plugged in when it sleeps? does unplugging & plugging in again the ipod make a difference?

  • Classic won't open in Tiger 10.4.6

I purchased Tiger 10.4.6 from the Apple Store to fix another problem and installed it over 10.3.9. The first problem was solved, but now I can't open Classic. I've spent 4 days reading other posts related to this new problem with launching Classic, but nothing has worked. Classic does not come on the new single Tiger DVD I purchased. And I don't have access to my original OS disc that came with Dual 500 PowerPC G4. Classic 9.1 opened fine in 10.3.9. I have 9.1 installed on a second hard drive and I used to start 9.1 from there. With Tiger 10.4.6, the Classic window comes up and says Classic is starting, then just hangs. I have tried turning extentions off, rebuilding Classic desktop, but no change. Can I fix this issue without a OS9 disc to reinstall from? I downloaded the 9.2.1 update, but can't install it because Classic won't open. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

This is a similar problem I was having Read This: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=531316&tstart=0
I was upgrading to tiger and just copied the the OS 9 System folder and the applications folder (Mac OS 9) to the new comp and well see for yourself, but read the messege board before trying. Later
