OS 9 disks for 2002 dual 1 Ghz MDD Power Mac

Hello.
I own a 2002 MDD Power Mac - the 1 Ghz dual version -, but I don't have the original OS 9 disks. I'm from Romania, so it's quite hard to get hold of them. Is there a way that someone could help me? I'd really like to run OS 9 on the Power Mac, as my 333 Mhz iMac proves to be to slow.
Thank you.

You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered.
However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured. In this case, it should include the OS 9.
Do you want to be able to boot into OS 9.x, or run OS 9.x in classic mode while booted into OS X. If you want to boot, you'll need the CD. However, if you just want to operate in classic (no OS 9.x boot) copy the complete System Folder containing OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 from another Mac. Then copy the folder to your Mac. You should now be able to run in classic mode.

  • Dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (June 2004) referb - booting problem

Hi all - my dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (June 2004) decided to rev its fans and boot no more. When I push the power button in front, the white light comes on while pushing it, then goes off, yet I hear the fans starting, the hard drive spinning etc. The key board isn't getting power (the caps light doesn't go on) and after a few minutes the fans rev like a jet engine...starting slow then gaining speed. I can't open the DVD from the key board (have tried all usb ports). Have also looked through this discussion area and tried many of the solutions provided (reset the PMU, unplug, try different outlets etc.) Any help would be appreciated. I do have Applecare but they are closed for the night.
    Thanks for you help
    Dual G5 2.0 (June 2004) referb from Apple   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Your OS is not loading and the fans default into a speed up mode.
Power up and hold down the mouse button, the cd tray will spit. Insert Tiger/install disk and power boot holding c. (note: use a wired keyboard/mouse directly to the machine and nothing else for now)
In the Installer, select Disk Utility from the menu>Repair disk/permissions. note any errors you see.
If you can't access the drive, it might be dead. I hope you backed up files.
All you need to do is get a new drive and reinstall Tiger etc.
If you can get a 6 pin firewire 400 cable to each Mac and t boot the problem Mac. the hard drive should appear on the other which you can recover files.
If the OS is fried you can do a archive and install too.

  • Can I put a dual processor in my power mac g5 which only has one processor right now

Can I put a g5 dual processor into my power mac g5? I have a power mac G5 but it only has one processor so I wanted to upgrade to the G5 dual processor found in the later version power macs. Would I be able to do this? If i could do this would i need another fan or other parts? I was also thinking of putting more ram in and another hard drive. PLEASE HELP

Exactly what to do with ram and video is hard to say without the model details.  You can go to http://www.everymac.com and click on Power Mac G5 and then find the machine you have.  The detailed info on the machine will show how much and what type of ram you can put in (I always use ram from either OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com) and also gives the installed video card info.  OWC would also be a good source to see what video cards are available that will work with that logic board.

  • Apple branded ROM Seagate 500 GB Hard Disk for G5 1.6 GHz

I've been reading all the threads here regarding adding/replacing the internal HD's in G5's.
I just bought a used Power Mac G5 1.6 GHZ/80 GB/1 GB RAM/Combo Drive (didn't like that surprise... it was a built to order....guess I'll be getting a Pioneer replacement for that too).
This G5 is in my recording studio and I need to add a large drive as the media drive for my digital audio recording projects since audio generates large files like video applications do.
I've been using the Mac since it was first released in 1984. As a result, I remember all the years of Apple's "special" ROM in their hard disks which made it more of a pain to use other HD's from various sources. Since I did have drives from different suppliers, I've used the old Silverlining software from LaCie over the years to deal with drives that Apple Disk utilities couldn't/wouldn't see.
I see that OWC has a special on Apple branded ROM Seagate 500 GB and 750 GB drives.
The text states that the drive will have a one year OWC warranty.
So I guess the two questions are:
    1. Does it matter any more if the ROM on the hard disk is an Apple ROM or will anything pretty much work. Are there any advantages to having a drive with an Apple ROM in it? Would these be a "better' candidate for use as a boot drive beacuse of the Apple ROM?
    2. What's up with the one year warranty? I see the other comparable drives are usually all 5 years.
Should the one year OWC warranty be of any concern? Obviously, 5 years is better than one year.
I'm assuming these are a discontinued item or were bought from Apple as OEM stock?
So should I care more about the longer drive warranty or the Apple ROM on these seagates from OWC?
Thanks for putting up with another G5 internal HD question.
    John

I forgot to put the OWC link in that takes you the Apple ROM 500 GB Seagate I referenced in my original post.

  • Best 1TB hard disk for G5 Dual 2.7

I need to replace the original 230gb drive that came with my Mac, what's a good, fast 1TB hard disk for a G5 Dual 2.7?

The newer WD Green models don't have the problems, TimeMachine does though. And the G5 is another 'factor.' But many Mac Pro owners use them standard and in software RAID (mirror and stripe too).
Yes Black is more popular and reliable, runs warm 41*C but any enterprise WD or Hitachi would be my picks. I've got a couple dozen WD Black, Green, Raptor, VelociRaptors all going srong for years and years. But would I use WD MyBook etc? never.
A popular setup is a fast boot drive - I'd say the 640GB WD Black but that seems to be EOL'd now - and a 1-2TB drive for media and data.
Some are even venturing into SSD territory though without SATA II that may not make a lot of sense.

  • Upgrades For Dual 1.8GHz G5 Power Mac

    Hi
I have just bought a power mac g5 and i am confused with what some of the other posts are saying about ram. The spec is 1.8 GHz Dual Processor, 1GB Ram (8x128MB Chips), 64MB graphics card. I am looking to upgrade my ram to at least 2 GB. Is the spec i need ddr pc3200 400MHz 184 pin, as this seems to be expensive? i am also looking at upgrading the optical drive so it can read/write dual layer discs, i have found 1 on ebay with lightscribe aswell. should this be ok?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=35 0227215181
i am also after onboard bluetooth and wireless. i already have a d-link bluetooth usb but would prefer the bluetooth card and antenna. is it one combined card? is it possible to get a wireless n card with this model?

If you want you can get some upgrades from OWC In wookstock, Illinois in the usa . I see you are from the uk that maybe to far for you .What do you want yo upgrade first . I would do the graphics card, but I would get the nvidia 6800 gt or better . they go for about 200 dollars in the us , I dont no how much thats in pounds . But www.owc.com is a good place to look and ebay .

  • Can't figure out how many GHz my Power Mac G5 has

    Hi,
I'm in the process of selling my 2004 Power Mac G5 (for repair & parts) and I have no way of knowing how many GHz it has because it is out of order. In 2005 when I bought the unit, I could have sworn I bought a 2.2 GHz model but now I'm not sure if it's 2.0 GHz.
When I open up the aluminum panel on the side, on the bottom part of the computer where it shows you the serial number it says it is 2.0 GHz / 512mb RAM but do all of these units say that to show the specs of the base model? Is there any other way I can find out? possibly call AppleCare and give them the serial number?
    Thanks in advance,
    J

    Hi-
There is no 2.2 GHz model.
I would believe the interior label.
Enter your serial number in the proper field on this page:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
and it should tell you what processor speed you have.

  • Does Photoshop Elements 6 (or 7)  use both processors dual processor on a Power Mac G4?

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm a newbie to the Mac world. My sister is giving me a Quicksilver G4, 733 Mhz w/256 Mb RAM. I want to use it for my photo library, 9000+ jpgs, cr2s (Canon raw format) which I have on PE 4 Windows XP now. I think I want to use Photoshop Elements 6, or 7 on the G4. So....I plan to upgrade Ram to 2Gb, and possibly put in one of those 1.8 Ghz DUAL processors, and upgrade OS as appropriate. Am I wasting my $$ buying a dual processor or would it be worth the $699 their asking for it? Any sage advice would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

It's not clear what you mean to do.. If you mean you think you can put an intel processor into a G4, yes, you are totally wasting your money. If you mean you want to try to give the G4 an extra G4 processor, you are still wasting your money where PSE is concerned.
PSE 6 (there is no PSE 7 for mac) will not run well on a G4. It's not really happy on a G5 even. I'd suggest saving your money towards a more up to date machine, or just getting a mac mini, which, while pretty low end, will still have far better performance than you can coax from the G4.

  • Dual 1.8Ghz G5 Power Mac support?

Apple lists that you need a minimum of Dual G5 2.0Ghz processing power, is that just for performance or will it not even install/run on anything slightly less?

Actually, the last time I looked, unless they have changed the spec, it said "requires 1.9 GHz", which still precludes you and me, unless someone else can verify that 1.8 GHz will still work.

  • My Safari 4 experience on a Dual 2.7 PowerPC Power Mac running Tiger.

Hello. Why is Safari 4 sucking up all of my computer resources? When it is the only program running, the activity monitor shows each of my processors running at about 60%, and maxing-out at 100% if I am watching a video online, or have another app running alongside it. Safari 3 was nowhere close to this kind of performance drain. Can I really not go back to it???
Also, every single time I launch Safari 4, it hangs with the spinning ball (or whatever the cursor is), saying that Safari is "not responding" when I open the Force Quit Applications dialog. Every single time, and this lasts for at least a minute.
    Eventually, the sites load up.
This is pretty bad. I am angry in reading that I cannot uninstall it and go back to Safari 3. Has anyone figured out a way yet? Apple really needs to offer a solution. Thank you for reading.

    Hi
There may be corruption in your System/User Caches affecting Safari's operation.
Follow the suggestions outlined in this post. When finished (you'll have to restart the computer), go to your Applications>Utilities folder via the Finder, open Disk Utility and "repair permissions".

  • Dual displays on a Power Mac G5

A friend of mine has a DP 1.8 G5 tower with a dual head DVI card with two ADC 17" cinema displays connected to it using the DVI to ADC adapter. On one of the displays the color is inverted. All of the color settings are set correctly, and the display setting is set to the correct "Black on White" in universal access. It isn't an issue with the display since when you toggle the display setting to "White on Black" it just changes which of the two displays is the inverted one. Other monitors have been plugged into the machine with the same result. Likewise, it isn't an issue with the graphics cars as the card was recently upgraded and the problem with the inverted color persists.
This feels like a problem in software and not in the hardware, but perhaps the computer doesn't like having two displays plugged in with the adapter. Though we have tried other displays they have all been, shockingly, ADC displays. I plan on lugging over my 20" Aluminum soon to see if that works normally. I suspect that it will. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried swapping the adaptors or trying someone elses? If the card has been swapped, that is the remaining hardware to check. Also, if you are not in 10.4.5 I'd try the upgrade, do one thing at a time to see which fixes it - if either. I suspect one adaptor is faulty. Are these the one's from Apple or are they 3rd party?

  • Clean Install G4 Dual 1 GHz-Not enough Disk Space Error? -SLOW USB copies

    HELP puhleeeeze!
This seems to be an issue on various sites with no one being able to figure out what is the cause and a solution. One person stated his problem went away with a fullwipe and clean-reinstall of everything. But this is what I did already.
What is the reason for the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message when both my hard drives have gigs of space available. If I had hair I'd be pulling it out by now!   When trying to copy a file to my 2 internal hard drives that have a lot of space available, but only by the USB port?!!
I have a Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door (MDD) Dual 1 GHz with a clean install of 10.5.8 from the Original Mac OS X Leopard DVD. Both internal hard drives are 60GB and 100GB. The hard drives were wiped clean with Disc Utilities and reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The Power Mac only has the OS and a few music apps installed. Easily over 30 GB of space left on the the main G4 interal hard drive and about 75 GB on the other internal hard drive.
The error seems to only happen when I connect a USB flash drive to the USB port. I tried to copy a 50MB update to the desktop-"Not Enough Disk Space" error message happened.
I know that the G4 MDD Power Macs only have USB 1.0. Is this a USB 2.0 issue? Another issue is that it has very slow USB speed (dramtically slower than normal USB 1.0 copying of files. And this is only when it is successful. Is it a USB format issue? I know I couldn't get an external USB 2.0 drive to mount on the Power Mac at all. Disc Utilities could see it but it still would not mount. I have a friend who has an older G4 single processor Mac that doesn't experience these issues with its USB 1.0 ports.
    Now here's the kicker:
If I put in a CD disc in the DVD/RW drive, it copies with no problems to either hard drive. If I connect to the Power Mac  via the ethernet network, files can copy with no problems. But any USB connection -  I get a the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message. I know this is an old mac... but it's never been problematic until this latest wipe and update to Leopard 10.5.8.
Is there a solution to this? Any and all help, feedback, comments, thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance!!!

    Hello everyone,
Ok, I did the ultimate task. I erased the hard drives, AGAIN. Just to start fresh from scratch. Hard drives were erased. Did a new install of Mac OS 10.5. And all was well. I could copy with no problems. I gave the computer to my friend and all was good for a couple of days and then the issue came back again. He couldn't copy anything to his internal hard drives and we received the "Not enough disk space" error message! I was baffled. A complete hard drive erase 2 times, 2 fresh Mac OS 10.5 installs and it works for a few days and then coping to HD we got the same **** problem again! THEN - I remembered that the PRAM battery was dead on this G4 Mirrored-Door Dual 1GHz PowerMac. I had recommended that he get a new battery, because this computer would always have the incorrect date and time after every restart. So with recalling this, I had him reset the PRAM by holding down the CMD+OPT+P+R keys after a restart (start-up Chime). I had him hold the keys for at least 3 start-up-chimes. Soon as the G4 Power Mac started up everything was fine again. He was able to copy files to his hard drives again with the "Not enough disk space" error message.
So everyone! Try zapping your PRAM (resetting the PRAM) and see if this solves your problem. I told my friend to get a new PRAM battery to replace the old one that is completely dead. I have not heard back from him.  I will ask him again if the problem has come back.
If that fails: My only other solution would be to consider that it is possible that Mac OS 10.5 has a conflict or issue with the G4 Processors and maybe it is safer to install Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4. Because this problem only has occured after installing Mac OS 10.5, the highest version of the Mac OS the Dual 1GHz Mirrored-Door G4 can be installed.
    Cheers,
    B
