OS 9 Driver for retrofitted DVD drive

Hello,
I have a dual CPU 533 mhz G4 with OS 10.4.10 installed. It will run classic mode and will also boot from OS 9.2.2, which is still on the hard disk.
The machine has been retrofitted with a "Super Drive," possibly made by Pioneer. It reads and writes CDs and DVDs. "About this computer" won't give me the name of a manufacturer.
The DVD drive works fine in OS X. Classic and OS 9 won't recognize it, though, presumably because OS 9 needs a driver for it.
I want to run an application that won't work unless Classic or OS 9 recognizes the drive and finds the CD mounted on the desktop.
What are my chances of finding a driver for the DVD drive and successfully installing it? How would I identify the right driver if I don't know the manufacturer of the drive?
I thought about making a disk image of the CD, in OS X, then using that in place of the CD in OS 9 or classic. I couldn't figure out how to make an image, though. Disk Utility in OS X doesn't seem to have that ability. I might have an OS 9 utility that could do it, but OS 9 can't see the drive.
Is that likely to succeed? If so, how to do?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Hey folks,
Sorry about the late reply. I hope it gets noticed, somehow.
"About this Mac" shows the following information about the drive:
ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16:
Model: ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16
Revision: G7Z9
Serial Number: 99B5C1520144445601SP
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
The markings on the front of the drive drawer are strictly generic. I haven't removed it from the case, yet. That's sort of a hassle.
Does this give any clues about how to ID the drive?
Come to think of it, I don't really remember where this drive came from.
Don Archibald wrote that the following items should appear in the OS 9 system folder.
•Extensions Manager -
Apple CD/DVD Driver
•Extensions folder -
Apple Photo Access
Audio CD Access
Foreign File Access
ISO 9660 File Access
UDF Volume Access
All are absent. I guess that would explain the problem.
I'll try to find these files and install them. I'll get back to you if it doesn't work.
Thanks a bunch.

  • Satellite A200 - Need driver for CD/DVD drive

    Hey folks.
Recently installed WXP Pro on my A200 PSAEC laptop, so I'm now dual booting XP and Vista on my laptop.
Problem is, I've got all the drivers working on XP and everything's running perfect, but when I tried to burn a DVD, Nero says the recorder can't burn DVDs. In "My Computer" the drive shows as a DVD-RW drive, but when I insert a blank DVD, it says CD Drive. The drive shows up as "TCSDcor' CD/DVDW TC-L6#2D" in device manager. I've searched around for a driver, but can't find an exact match for that drive and there's no optical drive drivers on this Toshiba site driver section. The only thing I've found is an executable file for upgrading the firmware, but it throws an error saying it's the wrong drive.
    Anyone got any ideas?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi
Toshiba European driver page provides three different firmware updates for Satellite A200 PSAEC series:
    TO02 for CD/DVD drive TS-L632
    TO02 - for CD/DVD drive TS-L632P
(This firmware solves some problems of the optical disc drive.)
    TO03 - for CD/DVD drive TS-L632H
(This firmware solves some problems of the optical disc drive.)
Im not quite sure what TO0$ means but I think the sign $ is only a free variable parameter (place marker).
If you want to check your current firmware then you could check it using the Nero Info Tool

Turns out there is a firmware update to that drive. Maybe it helps.

You can reinstall the driver by uninstalling it in Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and rebooting.

  • Unable to alternate internal DVD RW drive for external DVD driv

    Hi,
    Please call me Yogie.
    I have a G4 computer issue.
I have a Mac computer (G4-500mhz dual) with a Pioneer super drive. It has failed, to the point where it won't read dvd's. I've purchased an external dvd-cd burner (lacie) and when I want to record photos from Idvd, the Pioneer super drive tray will open for dvd insertion, but doesn't recognize the dvd. I need to override the Pioneer superdrive, so I can use the Lacie dvd rw drive. How can I do that ?
    Thanks

    Hi Yogie:
    Welcome to discussions!
How is that LaCie drive formatted? You must use HFS+ to store iMovie files, not FAT32(DOS) or Unix.
Connect the external drive and then launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). You'll see your external drive in Disk Utility's side bar; select it and then click the Erase tab at the top. From the Volume Format menu select which type of formatting you want (most likely Mac OS Extended-Journaled) and then click the oval Erase button at the lower right.

  • I need an update for my DVD Drive HP & not rely on Microsoft

I am having a HP DVD problem & i tend to disagree if ya say that my DVD drive (HP DVD RW AD-7586H)  needs replacing. My dvd drive works when it wants to (Has a mind of its own). The latest update for my DVD Drive is 21/06/2006 (7+ year old way out of date driver). Ive uninstalled my DVD Drive & re-installed after bootup & that didnt do nothing & i have used quite a few programs to update my driver (Driverbooster, DriverScanner etc) & there is never, ever an update for my DVD Drive via DriverBooster, DriverScanner or my HP Suppoort Assistant. EVER. If HP can give me a BIOS update, why dont you send me a DVD Drive update via me HP Support Assistant HP????  Well i think its a bout time HP should create an update to fix all DVD problems instead of relying on Microsoft to fix it. If my DVD Drive was Windows well i'd use the microsoft Fixits, but considering its a HP DVD drive , i think HP should fix the problem, not Microsoft.
    This question was solved.

What you see in divice manager is the control driver for the dvd drive, what you are really needing to look at is the firmware version on your dvd drive & see if a newer firmware is available.
Generally a lot of faults even intermitant ones are more hardware than firmware, drives are very cheap though & a 2 minute job to replace if needed plus you can source a better quality drive & spec as desired.
i think KH21 is newest firmware for that dvd drive.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • HT3986 Windows installation asks to insert a driver for CD/DVD

When the installation of Windows 7 starts it asks for a driver for CD/DVD player. Can't find it on the drivers apple provided on my USB stick (downloaded with boot camp). How can I fix this?
    Thanks in advance

I had this problem, and as you have probably found yourself, if you keep trying it eventually works. By 'works', I mean that you get to a window showing the partitions on the disc, but stating that the Bootcamp partition is not correctly formatted (NTFS). On my system (MacOS LIon) this is dealt with by the Bootcamp documentation, and you click on a link to get the option to format the partition ... and then it is (relatively) plain sailing.

    2) Try burning at a slower speed (not the best option, but can often get the job done if the laser is fading).
    3) Remove drive from Device Manager and remove upper/lower filters (see below).
    4) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.
    5) Use PC-Doctor/HP Hardware Diagnostic software to check for a bad drive.

    3) Make sure a bad disc isn't knocking out the drive (an operating system mounts discs as drives and things can get screwed up).
    4) Try reading the disc from a command prompt environment (outside of Windows).
    5) Reinstall drive from Device Manager (if drive is listed). {I'd replace this with bigger process of remove upper/lower filters (see below)}.

    2) Reset Power: Unplug power cord, press Power button for 10 seconds.
    3) Check power and data cables attached to the drive and look in the BIOS for the drive name.
    4) Remove upper/lower filters (see below).

Otherwise, here are the manual steps (overview):
    1) Uninstall the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager and DO NOT RESTART the computer.
    2) Uninstall your CD burning software (make sure you have the installation disc or you can resinstall from Start, Programs, PC Help and Tools, Recovery Manager (or Driver/Application Recovery). If you don't have the installation discs, skip this step - it might still work).
    3) Open the registry editor (Start -> Run -> enter Regedit) ... might want to make a backup of the registry at this point.
    4) Open the following keys:
     + HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
     + SYSTEM
+ CurrentControlSet (or the current control set with lowest number if that is all that is listed)
     + Control
     + Class
    5) Select 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. It has to be this exact key - make sure you can see the last numbers!!!
    6) Delete the UpperFilter and or the LowerFilters value in the right window if either exists.
    7) RESTART the computer - this step is important. Wait for Windows to find and install the CD/DVD drive you removed earlier.
    8) Reinstall your burning software and restart the computer again.

    Hi,
Based on this link, your machine uses standard bays that means any standard Optical drive should fit. Do you have any plan to add Blue Ray drive on your machine ? If YES, you can go for BD drive now, probably you have to pay around $10 more.

  • I need the front plastic cover for my DVD drive

The DVD drive is from a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4757 (PSAEGU-01100U) and I lost the plastic that goes on the front of the drive. The guys at toshiba say they don't carry spare parts, but I know that the part exists somewhere. I just need to find it :).

Hmm i doubt they are available separately since there is no generic size. Each ODD manufacturer place the LED and button and clips in different places, and may even be different within their own ODD range.
Send the laptop to an ASP and ask for a quote. You might get a quote for the whole DVD drive though.

  • Need Vista driver for CD/DVD SuperMulti Drive PA3761

    Hi there,
    hoping you can help me.
I've just purchased an external CD/DVD drive - PA3761 - the SuperMulti Drive.
When first connected to my PC - running VISTA - the computer searched for drivers to install and then came back with the message - no drivers found please install.
Looking at the Toshiba website I can't seem to find any reference to this product or drivers for it.
    Can anyone please help?
    thanks,

    hi JWestcott,
seems to be that there is no driver for vista available....
go to the device manager and find out which device code (dev_yyy&pid_yyy) is shown maybe you can search for...
there might be a generic driver for the usb chipset....
try the downloadpage for other countries as well....

  • No dev naming for SCSI DVD drive? [solved]

I've been trying for sometime to find the udev conversion for the SCSI CD/DVD drive I have.
    'dvd' doesn't exist
    hdc is taken
sda1 is taken by the root hard drive
sda2 is taken by the swap file
If I put /dev/sd in fstab, then try mount /mnt/cd2 (which is a valid mount point), it says special device 'sd' doesn't exist.
I guess I could always stick to the old name, but then it wouldn't be udev, would it?  It works by the old name.
I haven't tried it yet, but the only thing I found closest was:
    /dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target2/lun0/
except the actual lun is 2 on the DVD drive's controller, but I think the kernel is using target2 as the lun, and lun0 is what the drive is according to it not being chained.  target0 seems to be related to my SCSI hard drive.
    Thanks in advance.

mount: special device /dev/sdb does not exist
sorry about that, I thought about that too, but I didn't mention it because I was browsing the /dev/ directory and noticed it wasn't listed there.
I guess it would help to list my configuration, because there's probably an even more obvious reason for it, but I"m not sure.
Adaptec 29160N PCI card, has 68-pin and 50-pin connector.  The hdd and DVD drive are both connected to this controller card but to their according connector directly to the board.  They both come up in the bios screen with the HDD as LUN0 and DVD drive as LUN2.  The dvd drive works so far only if specified as /dev/cdroms/cdrom1.
I'm sure this is nit-picking, but I'm just concerned it might translate into a problem down the road.  If it's not an issue, just tell me.  LOL.
    update
Latest issue:  I noticed today that my Arch kernel says 2.6.12-ARCH (shouldn't it be X.X.X-SCSI?), and also my /dev path has dumped a ton of useless references, and also added an scd0 reference (which I'm wondering if this might be my SCSI drive?)....*edit again, wait, finally there's dvd and dvd1, I bet dvd is the IDE burner, and dvd1 is the SCSI dvd drive.  Hmmmm...  I'll try changing these in the media file and fstab and report back.
    *edit [still working on it]
Yes, uh, it appears to be scd0.  Where did this come from?   I know it wasn't there before, and neither was dvd or dvd1.  Which, as suspected, dvd1 and scd0 are both linked to the SCSI DVD drive.   :?:
    update:
I tend to think the difference was between using hotplug and lshwd since it was recently I switched to lshwd.  I also optimized pacman (pacman-optimize), but I wouldn't think that has anything to do with it.
