OS 9 Machines, MM and a brand new 10.4 Xserve

So I just finished migrating everything over from my old g4 tower with 10.3 to my new 10.4 Xserve, user files, WM Users, all that good stuff. But now I just realized that mac manager is only supported for upgraded 10.4 machines, not for clean installs, and its not even supported on later machines toboot.
What i need to know before I switch to the new server: How can I get my OS9 Machines to be able to login to a Workgroup Manager account, and mount the sharepoints? Or is there any way to get mac manager working on my new machine?

Time machine incredibly slow on brand new macbook pro

Hello everyone,
I bought a new Macbook pro 8Gb Ram dual core 2.8 GHz in late February of this year. Initially, the Time-machine back-ups worked very well and fast but on April 19 (shortly after my last back up), the hard drive of the computer died. I had it changed by Apple Care (for free given the warranty), but when the computer came back, it still could not boot, being always stuck on the welcome screen. The guys at the store made a complete reinstall of Mac OS 10.7 on the new hard drive and since then everything works fine... except that now (on Lion 10.7.4) whenever I try to do a back-up with the time machine, the progression is incredibly slow. It typically progresses Kb per Kb when I have about 86Gb to back-up....
I have check with disk utility that my time-machine external hard drive is fine. Furthermore, this HD is also used as a time machine for other macs and works very well in these cases. Finally, it still has more than 500Gb available on it.
I would like to know what's going on with my macbook pro ? Why is the time machine basically not working and what can I do to change that ? I am a little worried because, as you know, having back ups is essential and right now I simply cannot do a back up my brand new computer.

Yes, after a failed backup, it may appear to be very slow. Let it run.

You must (or it's already spent some time deleting old backlups). Otherwise, it would have failed. Besides, the message you posted earlier said there was 508 GB available.

I am a teacher and have purchased Gradekeeper. My brand new (3 months old) iMac Leopard (or Snow Leopard - I am not certain) does not allow me to open my Gradekeeper Installer. Hence, I am unable to enter into my previous gradings.

To run the installer and the program on Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, you will need to bypass Gatekeeper. Control-click or right-click on the installer or program icon and choose open from the menu that appears. A dialog will appear asking if you're sure you want to open it. Click Open. You will only need to do this the first time you run the program.
That's likely the problem, Gatekeeper has to be bypassed.
If you got the version off the AppStore, it's likely a older version as AppStore software is about 4-8 weeks behind as Apple reviews each and every one, every time.
Also it might be the developer no longer wishes to be part of AppStore ecosystem, the 30% Apple cut might be too much.

My Galaxy 5 freezes and its brand new

My daughter has a brand new galaxy five that is past its 14 days. The phone freezes on her. Anyone had this problem?

daninz23, congratulations to your daughter on her new device. We have a few tips to defrost that phone. Has she downloaded a few 3rd party applications from the Google Play market? If so, some application software can affect the performance of her device. We reccommend that you uninstalls any unwanted applications in Settings>Apps>tap the app & select Uninstall. Power her device off/on to soft reset and let us know if this works for her.

Time Machine restore stalling on brand new 15" MBP (OS 10.10.1)

Hi,
Just bought a new MBP 15" and thought the migration process would be as easy as it's been for me since the intoduction of Time Machine. However for some unkown reason the Time Machine restore in Migration Assistant is stalling about 60% through,,, (saying 26 mins remaining for hours now).
Has anybody encountered this on new computers running Yosemite? I am restoring from a Time Machine Backup via Thunderwire. Previous computer is in service with Apple, but was running the same version of Yosemite and all.

IPod 4th generation will not turn on and its brand new!

I just got my iPod touch. It is a 4th generation. I got it for Christmas of 2012. Now it wont turn on. I had left my iPod touch on the floor, my window was open, and it was very cold. I left it fully charged and I went to sleep and woke up and it wouldnt turn on. I didnt have music playing or the wifi on so that wouldnt be the cause of it not turning on. The coldness may have something to do with my iPod not turning on. It won't show up on the laptop and I'm scared the battery isnt working anymore. I am considering the thought of bringing it to the Apple Store. I dont want to get a new one cause I have a touch screen cover on my iPod. I hope someone comes up with an answer. Please help ASAP!

I have two airports, one quite old and one brand new. Which should be connected to the modem in an extended network?

I just got a new airport express to extend my wireless network. It's 802.11(n). I have an older airport-- I don't know what iteration of the 802.11 standard.
If I connect them with Ethernet, which should be connected to the modem? Does that answer change if I have to connect the two airports wirelessly?

Correct. But, if you do this, the question about which device connects where is then already answered....since the "new" AirPort Express must connect to your modem. So, your best wireless performance will occur in the area near the modem. Hopefully, that is where you need the best performance.
Side note-- the tech specs linked below for the 1st gen, draft-n APE say that it, too, is dual band, although it doesn't actually seem to be.)
It's confusing since a device can be dual band, but not simultaneous dual band.
1st Gen AirPort Express (AX) is dual band because it can provide a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network. But, it cannot provide both at the same time. It is one or the other.
The 2nd Gen AirPort Express is simultaneous dual band because it provides both a 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz signal at the same time.
1) Cable Modem ---> Switch ---> Two APE (all ethernet)
2) Cable Modem ---> 2nd Gen APE ---> 1st Gen APE (all ethernet)
3) Cable Modem ---> one APE ~~~> other APE (wireless between APE)
1) Will not work if you have a simple cable modem....one Ethernet port only.
If your cable "modem" is a modem/router with multiple Ethernet ports, then you could connect both AirPort Express devices back to the modem/router....and you would not need a switch at all unless you need more Ethernet ports for other devices.

3) If you want to make use of the simultaneous dual band capability of the Express, then that device must be connected directly to the modem. The 1st Gen Express will "extend" one band only.....probably the 2.4 GHz band, since it is stronger.
If you use the 1st Gen Express connected to the modem, the "new" Express will not extend two bands. It will only extend the band that it "sees" from the 1st Gen Express, so you lose the simultaneous dual band capability of the "new" Express in this type of setup.
If you "extend"using wireless only, there is typically a bandwidth loss of about 50%, so it is always a compromise in this type of setup.

Volume changes on playback in iTunes - with Vista and a brand new computer

When I playback any song, the volume slowly goes down. I have to manually turn up the volume, and then constantly adjust it up and down. How can I fix this?

Definitely a Windows Vista issue unless it's iTunes specific ...
Try playing a song in another program in Windows and see if the problem repeats itself. If it does, it's unrelated to iTunes completely and is a Windows issue. If it doesn't repeat itself, try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.

If the panic is recurrent, check that all are up to date, and if they are, uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can determine which is at fault. Why does MS Word 14.2.3 run so slow on MacBook Pro and brand new iMac?

Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, MS Word runs very slowly on both my 2007 MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM and a brand new iMac with 16GB RAM.
I have trimmed fonts in the systems and removed font conflicts and duplicates.
Keyboard entries are delayed by seconds and typing a document becomes a nightmare.
Any suggestions?
I have repaired permissions and verified both disks.
Also run Cocktail to clean out junk files. Still no luck.

Word is up to version 14.3.1. Try updating and see if that helps. The newest version may be more ML friendly. I certainly have no complaints about the speed of MS Word.
p.s. Just checked for updates - there is now a 14.3.2 version.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app

    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
