OS 9 system folder for Mini PowerPC G4

Hi all. I need to use my Mini G4 in classic mode (it's running 10.4.11).  I still have the original install discs that came with the machine when new but although they look OK, furstratingly the CD-ROM drive rejects them - I think I only need the system folder v.9.2(.2).  Can anyone help, please? I've done a lot of looking on here, but no luck.  Thank you.

For use as Classic, you should be able to copy a working OS 9.2.2 install from another machine. This copying can be done by a simple drag-n-drop copy process; a cloning utility is not needed.
It would probably be a good idea to also copy the Utilities folder associated with OS 9.
Note - copying an OS 9 System Folder from an OS 9 install CD will not work; those system folders will work only when booted to from the original medium.

  • No System Folder for Mac OS 9.1

My 2001 iBook was purchased in Japan and all discs that came with it are Japanese. I installed an English language version of OS X back then, and have upgraded my OS twice since then. Now running Tiger (English). The problem I have is that I am unable to use software that needs Classic. When I try to reinstall from the original discs, the message says 9.1 is already installed and I should upgrade to 9.2. But 9.2 won't install because 9.1 is not recognized. I've been going in circles with this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, innovator. OS X is multilingual, but OS 9 is not: you'll need to buy and install a retail English-language version of OS 9 before you can apply English-language updates to it. If you currently have a Japanese OS 9.1 installed, you can download and apply free Japanese updaters for 9.2.1 and 9.2.2, but I have no idea how that (or any Japanese-language Classic applications you need to run) will interact with an OS X installation that is localized for English.

  • Classic will not recognize system folder

I have installed Classic from the cd that came with my computer. The system folder for os9 shows up in root next to the osx folder, but there is no 9 on the folder. When I try to run classic in system preferences, it says os9 is not installed. I've seen other postings saying to "bless" it by dragging the finder from the os9 system folder to the desktop then back again, but this does nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Hello berne04,
Did you try this (from the link that Texas Mac Man posted)? Try it instead of dragging and dropping the Finder.
No "blessed" Mac OS 9 System Folder
If Classic doesn't start, but Mac OS 9 is installed, the System Folder may not be "blessed".
Open System Preferences and choose Classic from the View menu. You may see an alert box with the message:
"No startup volume: There is no volume with a system folder that supports starting Classic. Please install Mac OS 9.1 or later."
It may not be necessary to reinstall Mac OS 9. Try these steps:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View menu, choose Startup Disk. The Startup Disk pane appears.
    3. Note the current Startup Disk selection, which is a Mac OS X volume.
    4. Click the Mac OS 9 System Folder you want to bless.
    5. From the View menu, choose Show All.
    6. From the View menu, choose Startup Disk.
    7. Reselect the volume you noted in Step 3.
    8. From the View menu, choose Show All.
    9. Quit System Preferences.
    Hope This Helps,
    Jeff

  • System folder still here but preference system does not recognize it

    Hi,
I have just installed Tiger on my eMac and now classic won't start. It first tells me that classic preferences cannot save or read the preferences and then, as a second message, that the "system folder" is not available and ask me to use another system folder to run classic.
I tried re-installing Mac Os 9 with the non-bootable software restore CD that came with the computer but the result is exactly the same.
I am losing it. Is there a solution or shall I say goodbye to classic once and for all and put it in the trash?
    Thanks for your help

Hi, Mandianne. The second post by "Tatie" in this thread tells how s/he solved your problem.
Another, much simpler tip you may want to try first, before going to the trouble of an Archive and Install, is this: open the Classic pane of System Preferences and click the Start/Stop tab in that pane. If your OS 9 System Folder appears in the small box under "Select a System Folder for Classic", select it. Then click the "Start"button below it and see whether Classic now starts up properly. I don't know for certain, but it seems possible that when you installed Tiger, this important link between OS X and the System Folder that you want it to use for Classic may not have been carried over successfully from a prior OS X installation, or (if you had no OS X installed before Tiger) it needed to be made for the the first time before you tried to start Classic.

  • How do I install OS9 system folder on an eMac?

I have a brand new eMac. It has OS 10.4.4 installed. I need to install an OS9 system folder in order to run Classic. I have an OS9 CD, but the eMac can't boot to it or run anything from the cd from OSX. The eMac didnt come with a CD that says anything like additional software or Classic Support. I tried booting to the OSX install CD's and doing a customized install. Classic support or OS9 was not an option.
    Any ideas?

No new Macs can boot in OS 9, which is half the reason Classic was invented to emulate 9 while your Mac is booted in X.
The disk set that came with your eMac does contain installers that will give you a System Folder for use with Classic over X, but not on the main disks…
It's probably on one labelled Additional Software and Mac OS 9 but sorry, these things change from time to time and I haven't seen a recent eMac…

  • Start-up issues - system folder

Hey gang, I've got a bondi blue 233mhz G3 iMac. It has 160 mg of ram if I remember right (has 128mb chip in slot). Anyways, I got a hard drive from the guts of another imac we found... in a dumpster, of all places. The motherboard was fried on that one, so I swiped the HD. Seems good. I booted off OS 9.2.1 cd, and installed it on to the HD, after initializing it to clean it off. I restarted, and the thing doesn't see the system folder/hard drive! Yet when I boot off the CD, the HD shows up plain as day. I remembered to select it in the start-up disk extension, but it only boots off the CD.
Another question: the HD doesn't specify what the PIN settings on it are. Any suggestions? I tried looking it up, but can't find 'em. I believe its a Infineon, judging what I see on it. Thanks!

A missing Master configuration needs confirmation somehow before proceding. Although it is at the top of the list of suspects, there is other things to consider.
    — A HD that wasn't partitioned <8GB (7.8GB or slightly less) IF the capacity exceeds 8GB. Of course, any bootable Mac OS must reside on that partition. See this related link
    — Somehow an unblessed System Folder may have been installed. Just look at the System Folder for the 2 tone blue, 2 faced "Mac OS" icon. See this related link.
So far these 2 come into mind.

  • Corrupt OS 9 systems folder?

    Dear Friends,
I am working on my church's computer. The original OS 9.1 is installed on one hard drive and a second hard drive is partitioned with OS10.4.8. The second partition has OS10.0 with fresh install.
The goal is to be able to convert data from a church database application in OS 9 to the new version in OS X. When using classic in the OS 10.4 the system folder used is OS 9.1 from the first disk. I get a message to upgrade that folder to 9.2.2. I have tried to upgrade to 9.2.2 on the OS 9.1 disk but upgrade fails. After many attempts I have been unable to use the conversion program in the church data base application to update data base with new version of application in 10.4. I've tried so many work arounds I am now dizzy. Could you help me get this process organized and successful? The support staff at the database application have told me this is a Mac upgrade issue and that their software is working correctly. I can have the company do the upgrade but I need to have an archive of old church records in the new format.
I think the problem is in the system folder from the old OS 9.1 software, but I cannot seem to get it to work properly. Without that step I cannot do the conversion.
I can give you other info if needed, thanks.
    Church mouse 3

Hi, churchmouse, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Digital Audio PowerMac G4 was originally shipped with OS 9.1 installed, and can boot into that OS if a) the installation of OS 9.1 was performed using the original, model-specific disc that came with the computer, AND b) the installed OS is in good shape.
There is almost no earthly reason to keep a copy of OS X 10.0 installed on any computer. If someone in the church has a grievous sin to expiate, using OS X 10.0 for a week or two would be a fitting penance. 10.0 was a beta version — barely half there, less than half ready, and pure misery to use.
If I were you, I'd erase the partition that contains 10.0, use the original disc(s) that came with the G4 to install OS 9.1 on that partition, and then update that installation to 9.2.2 witht he downloadable OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updaters (you can't skip 9.2.1). Then I'd designate the new OS 9.2.2 System Folder for use as Classic in the Classic pane of OS X 10.4's System Preferences, and put it to the test. OS X may want to update a few Classic-related files before Classic will open, but the updates should go well now. If Classic opens and works, test to make sure you can also start up the G4 from the 9.2.2 partition: you should be able to do that, too.
If all seems to be well, copy any important data files that are currently stored on the OS 9.1 hard drive from it to the new OS 9.2.2 partition. After converting them to the new file format as needed and checking to make sure they open and work as desired, I'd suggest performing a Clean Install of OS 9.1 on the second drive.
Contrary to what Beavis has written above, a Clean Install deletes nothing from the drive it's performed on; it merely creates a new, pristine System Folder on the drive and renames the old one "Previous System Folder," leaving that folder and its contents (and everything else on the drive) intact. The term "clean install" is frequently misunderstood and misused to mean an installation that first erases everything, and I presume that's what Beavis was talking about. That isn't what a real Clean Install does.

  • Classic System Folder Disappeared or Got Trashed By Mistake

I upgraded from OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.10, and from a G3 iMac to a G4 iMac -- all because the G3 died and I have had to put its hard drive into a USB enclosure to access it, and because one of my LaCie backup drives now needs a complete Data Rescue II.
The problem is this: Classic will not run; an error message appears which says "No System 9 Classic Folder installed." When I upgraded to 10.4, I did a clean install which certainly ought to have included the necessary pared down system 9 necessary for Classic. On the G3, I had both 9.2.2 and 10.3.9 installed, and I suppose I might install 9.2.2 from disks if that will give me a system folder with which to run classic. I think a system folder for Classic 9 got lost or trashed, and needs to be reinstalled. Is there any way to do this?
To reconstitute my G3 10.3.9 System to run the now encased former CPU hard drive, should I install a 10.3.9 system directly to that hard drive, boot from it and thereby access all it contained (including whatever made Classic run on that machine)? Should I install 9.2.2 on that same hard drive? Or install 9.2.2 on the new G4iMac running 10.4.10?
It is so easy to make big mistakes mishandling system folders and contents. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.
    Charles

Again much thanks, Kappy. The Classic Folder in the Library in the Previous System is unfortunately empty. This may be because the Archive was created onto an external hard drive(?). My present machine will not permit me to install OS 9.1 - 9.2 because it cannot start Classic (without a Classic Folder already on the machine:- Catch 22.)
Might I be able to use this G4 iMac in Target Mode, firewire connect it to the eMac G4, then try to install from the installer disk mounted on eMac or directly from OS 9 CD startup disk running the eMac? Somehow I have to get some Classic Folder onto the iMac G4 before it will allow me to do anything with the installation disk. It will not even let me install onto an external hard drive. The eMac however has Classic working properly, and will allow all these things; and the eMac and iMac are already connected as an ethernet network for file sharing and printing (if that mode could be used to install onto iMac from eMac.)
I'm sure there is some way to do this; I just can't get past the necessity for Classic to start first on the iMac within System 10.4.10 -- since there is no Classic folder attached to an OS System 9 to allow it.
Do any of my work-around ideas for targeting the iMac from the eMac have merit? If I haven't entirely exhausted your patience, I would deeply appreciate your advice.
Thanks for taking your time to help me.

  • Trying to get System Folder 9 up in OS X

    Hi,
I received my Mother-In-Law's iMac DV as a present for my 5 year old. She had the upgrade version of OS X installed over 9 (i think 9.2.2). She was very particular about deleting her old data that was on the drive, and we tried to delete files, but kept getting stuck. I am vary familiar with Windows, so thought a clean install of the OS would work fine to wipe drive...which it did.
However, she bought some programs that need OS 9 to run. Tried to open them up, but it's asking for system folder for 9. There is nothing in the drive for it. After doing some research, it sounds like I need to transplant a system folder from:
A: the original install or system restore disks (which I've tried, but didn't see anything on them that looked like what the various websites I've visited described).
B: a retail version of OS 9 to reinstall (My Uncle-In-Law gave me a grey OS 9 install disk, vs. the orange system restores that my Mom-In-Law had).
    C: None of the above.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi, WIBoomer1 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
In order to have Classic available on the machine, you will need to install OS 9.1, OS 9.2.1, or OS 9.2.2. OS 9.1 is the minimum version that can be used for Classic; OS 9.2.x provides better compatibility in that mode.
The iMac DV (Slot Loading) models originally came with OS 8.6, so its original Software Install or Software Restore disks will not be suitable.
You will need to use a retail OS 9 Install CD in some version, then update that as needed using download updaters to get to the final version of OS 9 that you want. OS 9 Install CDs can be obtained at places like -
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html
    EBay is another possibility.
Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail OS 9 Install CD. Retail OS 9 Install CDs have a white label with a large gold 9 on them. The retail OS 9 Install CDs have a universal installer; model-specific Install CDs (gray or gray-blue label, with a machine model specified) do not. There is no model-specific OS 9 Install CD (Software Install) that is usable for that model iMac.
I would recommend getting either a retail OS 9.1 Install CD or a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD. If you want to end up at OS 9.2.x, get a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD - this will eliminate the need for one or more download updates.
OS 9 can not be copied from an OS 9 Install CD. It must be installed from it, by running the install app (Mac OS Install) on the CD. This installer will not run in OSX - it will run only when the machie is booted to OS 9. This usually means booting the machine to the CD.
When the machine is booted to the OS 9 Install CD, if the icon for the hard drive does not appear on the desktop, then when the hard drive was erased while installing OSX the option to install OS 9 drivers was probably not selected. If OS 9 drivers are not installed, the drive will not be available when the machine is booted to OS 9.

    Hi,
You can reinstall them from Recovery Manager by clicking on Start=> All Programs.
If you have performed a complete HP Recovery using F11 then all the software should be there. If you have performed a minimized recovery then you can install applications from recovery manager...If none of these works then you'll need USB recovery..

  • Is deleting previous systems folder save when looking for more HD space?

Could I copy it to an external HD just in case?

Your current running system isn't using any part of the Previous Systems folder. All of that folder's contents are just sitting there. If there were no old components you want to keep (most likely command line software you may have installed yourself) it is completely safe to trash that folder.

  • The home folder for user isn't located in the usual place......

    ....or can't be accessed.
Ok so I have trawled the internet and found this to be a known problem, however mine has an extra twist.
Ok, my Mac has a local admin account, lets call it Admin, but the account I use is a network account called PBN.
This network account does not create a home folder path to the server, as such it stores a user folder in Macintosh HD/Users/.
Since buying this mac this has been working fine, no issues, but today when I log onto the machine it gets the error "The home folder for <user> isn't located in the usual place or can't be accessed", whats more is that its created a new folder labelled "~".
    Things I have tried:
    1) repair permissions and repair disk while booted into SL DVD
    2) Right clicking while in System Pref - Users to get to advanced options to check the home drive path (Can't do this because its a network account although the profile is stored locally)
    3) xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo / on problematic machine
Couldn't do this on the PBN account as it has no permissions (although it is a domain admin)
attr file no found error the admin account
    4) xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo /volumes/users/ while booted into another machine with broken machine in target disk mode.
So, I am at a major loss and would really preciate any help

The error messages regarding network homes really don't offer any specific clues as to what's wrong. The error message you're getting means one of several things - you've done something wrong setting up your server, you've done something wrong setting up your clients, your server has hardware/software issues, or your network infrastructure is bad. I'm honestly not trying to give you a bad time here, just going over possibilities.
DNS, which you mentioned, is a good place to start. You mentioned that forward/reverse lookups work, and that's a good sign. But just to be sure, have you run sudo changeip -checkhostname
If that reports back that the names match and there is nothing to change, then it's pretty certain that DNS is not the issue. Just to be sure, your clients are using your OS X Server, or whatever server is hosting DNS records for your setup?
The next step is to double-check permissions on the shares where user homes are located. The clients should also have accurate date&time settings.
The logs on the clients and server can also offer clues, however cryptic they may be, be sure to look at them if you haven't.
Also, has this setup worked before, if not, can you describe how you set everything up? I've been stymied by OS X Server myself, so I get where you're at, but the more details you provide, the better chance that Tony, Mr. Hoffman, or other folks here can offer a few more clues/suggestions.

  • Mac OS 9 system folder????

when i try to instal some programs, a popup comes up stating the following, "classic cannot find a Mac OS 9 system folder on the startup disk to use. You may need to install Mac OS 9.1 or later (classic support) on your computer. to select a system folder on a nother volume, click Open Classic Preferences." How do i solve this issue?

    Hi Patrick
Firstly let me just say that I almost mistook you for my cousin, until I saw you are in Canada.
Anyway, the problem you are seeing is that the software you want to install requires the older Mac OS 9 system software and it seems that your PowerBook either did not come with Mac OS 9 or it has not been installed.
If your PB did not come with a copy of Mac OS 9 then you will have to purchase a separate retail copy (if it is still available). Otherwise you can install it from your installer discs.

  • Blinking system folder

Hi. I'm a IT tech at a high school and I came across a teacher's computer. The system folder was blinking with a question mark at start up, so I used Diskwarrior 4.0, and managed to repair permissions. I also rebuilt the directory, and the program said directory successfully rebuilt. When I restarted the computer it booted from the cd again. I ejected the cd and restarted, but the blinking system folder with a question mark came up again. I then used a 10.1 install cd's disk utility to repair permissions, and everything seemed ok, until I restarted the computer again, and I get a blinking folder with a question mark. I then used a 10.2 install cd's disk utility to repair permissions, but the repair button was phased out. (I guess it could not see the hard drive) and it gave me an error when I checked the files and folders option. I finally used the Diskwarrior 4.0 again, but when I tried to rebuild the directory for a second time it gave me this error:
'The directory of the disk "unknown disk" cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified. If you report this error, please mention the error code (2155,-57).'
Is there anyway to access the files on this hard drive or is it totally gone?
    Would Diskwarrior 3.0 help?
If anyone can assist me in this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.
Btw, the computer is an imac G3 crt 500mhz indigo slotloading powerpc with a 10.2.8 operating system.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Mac Mini PowerPC: What should I do with it?

I have three Macs and no longer have a need for my PowerPc Mini. Any suggestions on how to use it as a resource when I don't need it any longer?

There were ways to get Front Row onto systems which were at first not compatible (it's not supported by Apple but you may still find instructions if you Google it) but Front Row in Leopard works extremely well with G4 minis, as long as you have at least 512Mb RAM. Of course a copy of Leopard adds to the cost of the project!
However, you don't need Leopard to be able to access the iTunes library on another system at home. As long as that system is connected to the same network, and is set to share it's library, the mini should be able to see that shared library even if it's running an earlier version of MacOS. You might want to have a look over at the iTunes area of Apple Discussions (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=789) for information on how to set it up if you're not familiar with doing so.
In terms of your video problem, if you're getting a usable screen up until the point where the mini is logging itself into your user account, then you have display preferences set to something the TV can't handle. I'm not very knowledgeable on connecting minis to HDTVs, so you might be better posting a new thread asking this question in the 'using displays' section of the Mac mini discussion area (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=761), to increase the chances of one of our resident experts on this area of using these systems seeing your problem and responding. However, if you connect your mini to an ordinary display and reset it to a basic screen resolution, such as 800x600 at 60Hz, it should then work with your TV sufficient that you can get a usable display to start from. You may then need a utility such as switchresX to help set up your display settings to make it work correctly - you'll find a number of threads in the 'using displays' area on this general area of Mac mini use!
